14 best headphones studios
Headphones designed for studio use are essential tools for professionals in the music and audio production industry. They are engineered to provide accurate and detailed sound reproduction, allowing engineers, musicians, and producers to make precise adjustments to their audio recordings. Here are some key features and considerations for studio headphones:
Closed-Back Design: Studio headphones often have a closed-back design, which helps to isolate the audio being played in the headphones from external sounds. This isolation is crucial for critical listening and recording, as it minimizes sound leakage.
Accuracy and Transparency: Studio headphones are known for their ability to reproduce sound accurately and transparently. This means that they aim to deliver a flat frequency response, ensuring that what you hear through the headphones is a faithful representation of the audio being recorded or mixed.
Comfort: Since studio professionals may wear headphones for extended periods, comfort is essential. Look for headphones with cushioned ear cups, an adjustable headband, and lightweight materials to minimize fatigue.
Durability: Studio headphones should be robust and built to withstand the rigors of a professional studio environment. Durable materials and construction are vital to ensure longevity.
Detachable Cables: Many studio headphones come with detachable cables. This feature allows for easy cable replacement in case of damage and makes storage more convenient.
Impedance: Studio headphones come in various impedance ratings.Lower impedance headphones (e.g., 32 ohms) are suitable for portable devices, while higher impedance headphones (e.g., 250 ohms) may require a headphone amplifier for optimal performance.
Sensitivity: Sensitivity is another important specification to consider. Higher sensitivity headphones may produce louder sound levels with the same input, which can be beneficial in a studio setting.
Closed-Back vs. Open-Back: While closed-back headphones provide better isolation, open-back headphones can offer a more natural soundstage and are sometimes preferred for mixing and mastering in quieter environments.
Price Range: Studio headphones are available in various price ranges, from budget-friendly options to high-end, professional-grade models. Your choice should align with your specific needs and budget.
Brand Reputation: Consider purchasing from well-known and reputable brands in the audio industry known for their accurate and high-quality studio headphones.
Compatibility: Ensure that the headphones are compatible with the equipment you intend to use in your studio, such as audio interfaces, mixers, and headphone amplifiers.
Studio headphones play a crucial role in the production and recording process, helping professionals make critical decisions about audio quality. When selecting studio headphones, it's essential to prioritize accuracy, comfort, and durability to ensure the best possible results in your audio work.

User questions & answers
Question: | Anyone know where these are made? Are they made in China like many competitor's models |
Answer: | These are made at Beyerdynamic factory in Germany. All of Beyerdynamics large on-ear headphones are made in Germany. Some of the companies in-ears are made in China but 90% of their products are made in Germany. |
Question: | Given the prices $180 for 32 ohms, $278 for 80 ohms, and $170 for 250 ohms, which one should I buy for 98% amp-less listening |
Answer: | For an amp-less setup the 32 Ohm are the way to go. Yes you can use the 80 Ohms non-amp'd (the 250s are not recommended for this), but your listening levels are going to be limited (how many dB you get out of them). Beyerdynamic created a set of low-impedance for a reason - and if your laptop / phone / or PC with no external amp/dac or amp'd internal card are your primary use...then you have your answer. |
Question: | Does the 30 ohms have the same bass output if it is connected to an amp compare with the 250 ohms |
Answer: | I am looking at this 250 ohm headphone because it has a high impedance. I build a vacuum tube amplifier with a nominal impedance of 600 ohms. Although it seems to drive 32 ohm headphones, it will work better with headphones closer to 600. The high voltage changes needed to drive high impedance headphones do not carry a lot of current, but they do carry much detail. I tend to believe that high impedance headphones will be more responsive and defined than lower impedance headphones, but their hardware requirements are different. Small mobile devices don't have high voltages in them to generate signals for high impedance headphones, which is why low impedance is standardized, and even then, many devices lack the power to drive the bass on them. A dedicated amp is the extra hardware to fill out a quality signal. So even poor quality headphones can sound better when driven by the appropriate source. In the end, your headphones will not improve the sound significantly if you do not have an amplifier to back them up, though I still think higher impedance phones will result in a better sound. |
Question: | How does this compare to the Audio Technica M50x |
Answer: | For me, the 2 sound very different from each other. The soundstage of the M50x is pretty narrow while the soundstage of the DT 770 (I’ve only heard the 250 ohm) is very wide for a closed-back. The sound signature of the DT 770 is actually more neutral than the M50x. The M50x is commonly attributed with a V shaped signature, but it’s a pretty wide/flattened V (more like a smile or reverse check mark). The DT 770 (250 ohm) has one of the more neutral signatures out of headphones in this price range/class (you can look up the sound graphs for it to see it’s pretty neutral). I like the velour pads of the DT 770 way more than the pleather pads of the M50x (I will say it’s a big improvement over the M50 pads). The M50x folds up quite well while the DT 770 doesn’t fold up at all. If you plan on packing it, the M50x will take up less space even if you used a case for it. The detachable cable of the M50x also allows it to be stored without risking damage to the cable. Of course, if you’re getting the 250 ohm DT 770, you’re going to need an amplifier while the M50x can be run without one (though it does sound better with one). I’d honestly recommend that you pick out between 5-10 tracks from your library that you know really well and listen to how both headphones reproduce the audio because 1) your ears are unique to you, 2) your preferences for certain specific details are unique to you, and 3) the more headphones you try the more you’ll be able to pick out the sound that you like the most. I modified my M50x with the hybrid Brainwavs Pads and added 2 small vents in the cups to cut the low and high down and make it more neutral as well as open up the soundstage to have better separation (and velour-leather hybrid provides benefits from both worlds regarding comfort-to-leakage). I power the DT 770 with a Phil Jones Big Head DAC/amp. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these headphones come with a carrying case |
Answer: | No, they don't come, but I suggest to buy a case just in case. If you don't want to, buy it without a case, those are durable headphones, but you never know if you'll need the case to carry them in a bag, back pack, carry on. |
Question: | How does this compare to the ATH-M30? And how comfortable is it for extended hours of use |
Answer: | I can only respond to the 2nd part of your question as I have not tried the ATH-M30, but the ATH M20X was (for me) extremely uncomfortable even after using for only a short period of time. This was due to the, IMO, excessive heat build-up which literally caused pools of sweat to collect inside the earpieces. I returned the headset after a few days. |
Question: | are these good for big heads? i have trouble finding headphones that fit comfortably over my big head. also i wear glasses if that helps |
Answer: | They are pretty tight on the head, and they go over the ear, so if you're wearing glasses the soft part will push on your frames. I can't wear my glasses with them because I find it too uncomfortable. It might be better to look at on ear, rather than around ear headphones. That said, I've been able to loosen the headphones a lot by bending the the metal headband. If you're not afraid to do that with $50 then you might be able to get them to a comfortable "clamp" amount, haha. |
Question: | Are these noise-canceling enough to wear on a plane and not hear the plane noise |
Answer: | They do NOT have electronic noise canceling. They are over the ear. The cups absorb outside sound but not enough that would be considered "noise cancelling". They're mainly for DJ's, home, and professional studio producers who use them because electronic "Noise Cancelling" tech interferes with recordings. |

Question: | How many stages of height adjustment is available on each side of the speakers ? (Is it symmetrical on both sides |
Answer: | Amazon seems to be cross post this on different aftershokz products. The aftershokz aeroplex definitely will not fit a large head. My head is 7 1/4 and the bone conduction part wants to rest in the ear canal where an earbud would go instead of in front of the ear on the cheekbone where its supposed to be. |

Question: | If I pair these with a 19.95 Sony Walkman tape player from ebay will that be ironic enough to get me in with the hipsters |
Answer: | There is no way for and end user to change the beep volume. Supposedly, Aftershockz is aware of this. Their "R & D department is "working on this" and a "product of lower beep sound" will be "introduced to the production line" and "the volume of the sound will drop by 3dB". (Source: A contact us / support request email exchange with Aftershockz in JAN 2021. No indication of which model or when this improvement will be introduced, but I am hoping soon and that they tell us when it happens). If I remember correctly, the beeps on my older Trekz Titanium were a lot quieter. The loudness of beeps on my recently purchased (Jan 2021) Aeropex Mini is very jarring and almost painful if I am wearing ear plugs or in a quiet environment. I find that loud beeps aren't as bad if I am not wearing ear plugs, but definitely annoying and a bit uncomfortable. In my opinion, this is a SERIOUSLY BAD DESIGN decision by Aftershockz. This has CHANGED my view of the Aeropex / Aeropex Mini from a really AMAZING, NEARLY PERFECT product, to something that I am SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING RETURNING. (Since language settings can be changed by the end user, I think Aftershockz should seriously consider a programming a setting where you can mute these beeps for those sensitive to loud or abrupt sounds.) (NOTE: I tried lowering & muting my ring tone and adjusting max volume settings on my phone per other commenter's suggestions, but this has not had any effect on the loudness of the headset button beeps. I am not using an iPhone though.) |

The Exploration of Sound
The HD 800 S demonstrates over seven decades of audio expertise, redefining the critical listening experience. Sennheiser's goal was to provide acoustics so immersive that you the lines between playback and reality were erased. The signature sound of the HD 800 S is possible because of the synergy of every world-class component.

Luxuriously soft earpads rest around the ear for long-term comfort.

Wired
Comes with cables for connecting to singled ended 1/4-inch (6.3mm) and balanced 4.4mm Pentaconn outputs such as headphone amplifiers, A/V receivers, audio interfaces and more.
It Has A Ring To It
The heart of the HD 800 S and its striking sound is the 56mm Ring Radiator transducer. It leverages the air displacement of a large speaker diaphragm without losing the rigidity of a smaller one. The result is hyper fast response for superb detail across the entire frequency range. The headphone’s vibration damping chassis and inert headband ensure that what you put into the HD 800 S is precisely what you will get out of it, too.
Each transducer is manufactured, tested, and measured to the tightest tolerance for the most dependable performance out of the box. Even the 40mm voice coil is wound in-house to ensure the shape and consistency is held to the highest standard. Each HD 800 S includes the frequency response plot unique to those perfectly matched transducers, sparing no resource to help you retrieve the most critical details from every corner of your music collection.
Behind the Mask
Achieving acoustics that are true to the source also requires management of compounding frequency clusters that produce undesirable masking effects. Sennheiser integrated a patented frequency absorber to reduce resonances that hide extraordinary musical details in plain sight. Further, the transducer system is mounted in a vibration damping chassis using aerospace-grade materials. As a result the problematic energy peaks of lower frequencies are controlled to unveil the purity your hi-fi setup is capable of.
Let’s take a look at the specifications...

User questions & answers
Question: | Can anyone please recommend a usb adapter for this to plug into a PC? Thanks |
Answer: | A small, cheap usb DAC adapter probably won't work well for these. They need a bit of power to drive them properly. Power supplied solely from a PC USB port probably won't be enough (500mA max for USB 2.0 and 900mA max for USB 3.0). You will get much better results from an external audio interface and/or a headphone amp. |
Question: | comfort |
Answer: | They are very comfortable for the first hour or so. I sometimes wear my glasses rather than my contact lenses while using these headphones, and have found that with glasses the comfortable period is much shorter due to pressure on the wire earpieces. The The coiled cable is fairly long, and if you move around in a chair while using these with a laptop, the cable will eventually snare you. The cable connects to the left earphone, and if your earphone connector is on the right side of your computer, receiver, TV or whatever, that means the cable has to be draped across the front of your body. You could reverse the phones on your head, but that would put the left channel into your right ear and vice versa. There's probably a way to reverse channels to correct this. |
Question: | How is noise leakage out of these headphones? I am interested in using them for vocal recording so mix leaking out is a no-no |
Answer: | Even with loud volumes, the leakage is generally non-existent. The volume needs to be uncomfortably loud for me to start hearing a very slight sound leak. |
Question: | Are these a good choice for listening to music at home? I work from home, and I need music to concentrate |
Answer: | I love these headphones for listening to music as well as TV. I had a pair of MDR-V6 phones I bought from Tower Records in Nashville years and years ago in the early 90s that just died after almost 30 years of service, and these are very very similar. These don't have quite the bass that the V6s did, and the highs are a little brighter, but that will be in my best interest if they last me 20+ years like the V6s did! There's a reason the MDR7506s became an industry standard soon after they were released by Sony in 1991 and it's not because they're bad to listen to. If you want to listen to your music the way the engineers and artists probably heard it in production, grab a pair of these. Hit YouTube and watch the in-studio recordings of Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales songs and look at the headphones everybody is wearing. Everybody. Mix of both MDR-V6 and MDR7506, the MDR-V6s having been released six years earlier in 1986. All the way up to current times like the video for "Times Like These" with Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Ellie Goulding and all those other artists that was released a few weeks ago had a couple of people wearing them. That's longevity. I found that they are more comfortable with the aftermarket lambskin leather earpads that you can find for around $20. They aren't super easy to put on, but are very comfortable. I love the headphones for listening to music as well as television when I don't want to keep people up at night. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a wide head, so will these break by opening them enough to put them on |
Answer: | These have great width room and actually fit a bit loose on me. |
Question: | does this work with an iPad |
Answer: | Of course. iPad can drive these to a sufficiently loud level. But note that these headphones do not have microphones built in. These are headphones only. |
Question: | Will these headphones plug into a digital piano? in other words do they have a large enough input and not just a small one like for earbuds |
Answer: | The headphones have a normal plug, but came with an adapter attached that was a very large pin that I assumed was for musical instruments. I don't know the correct terminology, though, sorry. |
Question: | Is this on-ear or over the ear |
Answer: | This over the ear. Thanks |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use it with guitar amp |
Answer: | Comfort wise these do NOT compare, AT labels them as over the ear but that only applies to kids and midgets. These press your ears against your head and will quickly cause discomfort. And in my opinion the 50X version sound very shrill, have very recessed mids, and have soundstage comparable to earbuds, overall unpleasant. Not worth the $100+ price tag. The senheisers are neutral and relaxed, some might desire more treble or bass but their purpose is balance. The sennheisers really shine in the mid-range, vocals really feel natural. The soundstage can very on models but overall great considering they are open back, instrument separation is very good. Overall they are worlds apart and can't really be compared as their purposes are very different. Consider other closed back headphones imo. |
Question: | Is it compatable with aeroplane plugs |
Answer: | Yes. I bought these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075M4TRWR/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 last December and they are in fact superior to the OEM pads. Wish I'd purchased them sooner. They turned my A-T headphones into true noise cancelling headphones! The pads are that tight sonicaly to my ears, without causing discomfort or excess ear sweating. Love these pads, and especially my A-T headphones! |
Question: | is there an adapter availlable for a PC |
Answer: | Headphones don't drain batteries. They just talked the juice from the headphone amp. I think with the agent of so many consumer grade headphones with noise cancellation or built in amplifiers we have a slew of people completely confused and misinformed with the basics of audio gear. These are the same. people that would have to call a computer tech to plug in computer monitor to a computer. These are the same people that will give a bad review to ga reat product simply because that don't understand the products intended use. |
Question: | how comfortable is it on top of head |
Answer: | Not sure about the Inspiration Actives but I have the regular Monster Inspiration over-ear headphones and they are just as capable and impressive as my ath-m50x. The people who are commenting saying the 50x is so much better than the Inspirations are showing true ignorance. The sound stage is actually slightly better on the Inspirations. Monster makes a wide range of headphones not all of which are just Beats clones. For people who own headphones like the Inspirations, the HD558's, JBL S500's... you will be disappointed if you think the ath-m50x will blow you away. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do these headphones do with classical/acoustic music? Is the sound natural and sufficiently good |
Answer: | These headphones are tuned very flat, which is ideal for classical and acoustic music. I am very much a fan of acoustic guitar, and acoustic jazz. In my opinion, they are superb for that purpose. As with anything, the recording mix is beyond the listener's control, but if the recording has not had too much artificial enhancing done, you will be very pleased with the performance of these headphones. Highly recommend. |
Question: | What about "noise pollution"? Will other people on the bus be able to identify the music i'm hearing, what is the critical volume these hp will out |
Answer: | As with all things, moderation is appropriate. If you want to throb your head and damage your hearing later in life, then things are different. Normal sound levels, with the ear pads cupped together, you cannot hear music, coming from the head phones, inches away from your ears. While on your head, you will hear the full range of music. Pay attention, you will feel the music, crisp and sharp, highs and lows, with good L/R separation. So unless your head is swiss cheese, even if it was, I think no one will hear anything coming from them, but you. I am speaking from experience, rural Sunday morning bedroom with the window open, light breeze through the trees, birds are content. I guess mating season is over.On the bus, with head splitting music? I think you are safe listening to top secret national defense briefings, in addition to any other music you can think of. That is, the bus is expected to be diesel/gas, in first or second gear, going 25+ MPH, and there are at least 10 people on board keeping to themselves. The headphones have good noise isolation, so your sound levels, depending on environment, will vary. You cannot hold a conversation, as that would be both difficult and rude, while wearing. All that to say NO, you are safe. The notion of critical volume is subjective. Since the object is to not damage hearing, critical volume is beyond the scope anyone should be using them. With that said, at 75% max volume on an iPhone in a relatively quite room, you will be able to identify the music for sure, with the ear pads cupped. Between 60% to 70% volume, you will not comprehend what is being listened too. At 50% you will hear no sound at all. On the bus, I suspect 75% to 90% is safe, while 100% volume could be heard quite clearly by the person sitting next to you. You could share your music with the ear cups opened out flat around you neck, without damaging anything. |
Question: | I have a big head. Will the ATH-M40x work for me |
Answer: | I have an abnormally large head, probably top 5% of the population. The ATH-M40x at maximum extension are a tiny bit snug. It's actually a really good fit. If you have a "big" head, you're fine. If you regularly find you can't wear other brands of headphones, the M40s aren't especially roomy. Try them and be prepared for a return if necessary. |
Question: | How does this compare to the M |
Answer: | It depends on your application. First, the M50 is now the M50x, which includes improved ear cups as well as three interchangeable cables (short, long, coiled). The M50's have a bit better isolation than the M40's. Sonically, the M50's has the flatter response on provides less coloration to the music than the M40. I.e., the M50 is very, very precise. You will hear the source faithfully and any coloration and soundstage needs to come from there because these cans, by design, will not provide it. The M40 is a bit more musical and will be more forgiving with consumer grade gear. In studio or for technical/critical listening, I'd go with the M50x. For a live stage or personal listening, I'd seriously consider the M40x. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How LONG in feet is the detachable cord |
Answer: | 9-10 Feet. |
Question: | Is this an original brand? or It is made in China |
Answer: | The inside sticker on a pair of these purchased in 2020 shows that it is "Made in China". The production country doesn't always indicate the quality as many name-brands have been outsourced to China. |
Question: | These being 55 ohm models, can you really get by without a headphone amp? I'm coming from Grado SR80s which sound fine without an amp, imho. This is for personal use, no mixing or DJing. Probably using a laptop or my Cowon MP3 player usually |
Answer: | Note : I'm hard of hearing (severe to profound, with more loss in the higher frequency) Comparing these to a Sennheiser HD 280 Pro that I am replacing (the right side died from a bad wire after just a year), using my desktop computer and my Samsung Galaxy J7 Star phone as a reference (using Google Music). On my desktop PC, which is basically your typical RealTek type of integrated sound card, they are a bit on the quiet side, but possibly audible enough for most people with a normal hearing range, but I am able to hear the vocals and bass, just more quietly than I like. The HD280Pro above was a louder by default (but has a higher impedance oddly enough). On my mobile phone, it's louder and while it may not be cranking it out, it's definitely loud enough for me to enjoy without a problem. When paired with my Tascam DR60Mk2 4-channel audio recorder, using the computer output into CH1/CH2 XLR inputs at a 'LOW' gain setting, and headphones plugged into the Phone monitoring 3.5mm jack with an output volume around 6~8 depending, it is much louder and closer to what I prefer. Also with the amplication provided on the tascam (Which is overkill for computer purpose, and meant more as a field recorder) with a Low gain setting is a very clean signal to the headphones and definitely loud enough for someone who is close to deaf as I am. Nutshell : even with me being hard of hearing, using the headphones with a mobile phone or computer directly, it's loud enough for me to hear it, even if it's not like "jamming". Sidenote : Compared to the Sennheiser, these are semi-open backs (versus a closed back), which means not only do the K240 exhibit sounds that other people in the room will be able to hear what you're listening to easily, it also means that as I'm typing on a mechanical keyboard with 'red' switches, I can hear my clacking typing while music is playing on the headphones. |
Question: | What is better for recording and mixing guitar, vocals (for metal). And mixing them. AKG 240 or Audio-Technica ATH-M50? Why |
Answer: | I can't comment on the ATH-M50, as I haven't used one yet. The AKG 240 however is a very good set, but I wouldn't use headphones to mix final masters. Especially not when you have to listen to screaming guitars. For tracking vocals you should be carefull as a sensitive mic would "listen" to the headphones too. Not always welcome when recording soft passages. Hope this helps |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these suppress engine noise |
Answer: | They suppress all noise by virtue of the seal around the ear, but they won't block it out because they're not technically noise canceling (no active noise suppression). They also do better with high frequency noise and aren't as good in low frequency where much engine noise lies, which is true of all things that only passively block noise eg ear plugs. So the answer is yes to a limited degree, but it won't be a complete suppression by any means and more in the high frequencies. I've found the combo of these with earplugs to be very effective for airplane noise. |
Question: | Is the cord detachable? The description says it is detachable, answers here say otherwise |
Answer: | The cord is not detachable but it is replaceable. If you're handy with a soldering iron you can however easily add a 3.5mm headphone jack to use a removable cable. |
Question: | How is the sound leakage? l need portable headphones to use in the bus, library, and such. I don't want to bother people around me |
Answer: | There is "sound leakage". At the moment, I have them hooked up to my computer. No special amplification, just on-board Realtek. At 75-100% volume, I can slightly hear them over ambient noise (such as my heater, which is kind of loud) while standing about ten feet away. I don't know if everyone else that answered this question listens to their music at low volume, or if their headphones have some insulation that mine doesn't but in my experience, there is plenty of "sound leakage". Also, you could actually use these as speakers while you're not wearing them. They wouldn't be loud enough to entertain anyone, but you could still listen to something while they sit on your desk. |
Question: | How durable are they in cold weather |
Answer: | I’m a professional location sound mixer in Alaska. I’ve had these headphones out in -50 F weather for 12 hour shoots. These headphones can withstand the cold |
