It depends on the sound card that you have and how it provides connections for audio and if it provides a connection for the mic. There isn't a single answer for this question because sound cards vary. If you were to go to the front panel of a PC that has a plug for the mic and a plug for a headset (sound), then you would use a splitter with this cable to split the mic away from the audio, so that you would be plugging jacks into both the mic and the headset input, and the sound would be stereo. There is no way to get surround sound using the 3.5mm jack. That only comes with the USB connection.
