User questions & answers
Question: | Can this store music and play to a blue tooth headset |
Answer: | No It is a TACTICAL watch, was made for military use. I have it and have used it in Syria, Iraq and several other countries. It is a really good watch and has a great battery life, playing music would kill the battery. |
Question: | Can you download courses created from a 3rd party site as a .gpx or .tcx file? Or do you have to exclusively use Garmin Connect &/or Explore for that |
Answer: | For course creation other than Garmin Connect Garmin devices are compatible with Strava and Map My Run. For more information contact us at [email protected] or visit our Support Center, https://support.garmin.com/en-US/ Thanks Jenny |
Question: | Does this watch have a great compass,a good one, or none at all? I bought it for my son for Christmas the compass is an important feature for him |
Answer: | Good Compass but not great Hold down on one of the buttons and the watch face becomes a compass. It shows the degrees (0-360) and the general direction (SE for example). You would not use this watch to plot a course on a map. For that, you can buy a compass for less than $20 that lie flat on a map, can be adjusted for a magnetic correction, they have lines, etc. |
Question: | I do desert exploring on a polaris rzr. can i track my course while riding and then use it to return home the way i came |
Answer: | Yes, this function is available when set to a GPS activity. You can navigate back to the starting point of your current activity in a straight line or along the path you traveled |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this watch waterproof |
Answer: | It is waterproof. I’ve swam with it in a pool and in the ocean (I was a little nervous about that, but no problems at all). |
Question: | Does this track elevation gain during your run |
Answer: | Yes it does, it also tracks elevation gain while cycling |
Question: | Would this fit a small woman's wrist |
Answer: | I have tiny wrists! The 235 face literally goes past the width of my wrist. The 35 is a nice fit. Bigger than what I'm use to wearing on my wrist in general but still looks good! |
Question: | What advantage does the 235 have over the 35 to justify $100+ more |
Answer: | I am looking at these two watches as well. I just went to my local running store today to talk to them about the 235 vs the 35 and they basically told me that they are the same watch except for thesefew differences.... the 235 has a color screen, longer battery life, and a few more running options like race pace estimating, V02 Max estimator, etc. If you go to the Garmin site and do the compare feature you can get a pretty good look at the differences. I also downloaded the manuals for both. I'm going to go with the 35. The extra features the 235 has are super nice but I don't think they are personally necessary for me. I run 5K's, half-marathons, and full-marathons and the 35 looks like it will be sufficient for me. Also, i'm a 34 year old female and the 234 looked HUGE on my wrist! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with a Garmin warranty |
Answer: | Yes, it does come with the Garmin Warranty. Garmin products are warranted to be free from defects in materials or workmanship for one year* from the original date of purchase. Here is a links for more warranty information: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=bcEvnxKADn2O7A2Tspooe6&productID=568181&searchQuery=Warranty Thanks Jenny |
Question: | Has anyone used this for diving and skiing? need a dive computer, but want to track my runs/top speed when i ski as well |
Answer: | The skiing feature is NOT working well. I have used it many times and was getting various false readings including bogus altitude and impossibly high speeds. Not recommended for skiing. But happy with most of scuba related tracking except few small bugs with the mobile app and the diving related screens. |
Question: | Is it compatible with tank pressure transmitter |
Answer: | It does not have air integration... one of the biggest downsides to using it as a dive computer, Garmin should have incorporated it for sure! |
Question: | Can I download music on the decent like my fenix 5 and use it for running as well |
Answer: | Hi, Thanks for your question. Unffortunately, it can not hold music files. Thanks Divemaster Chris 866-728-2293 Onlinescuba |

Versatile GPS Dive Computer for Your Diving Adventures
Whether you dive with or without tanks, in saltwater or fresh water, breathing nitrox, trimix or holding your breath — Descent Mk1 is the intuitive, do-it-all dive computer you’ve been waiting for. It’s the first watch-sized dive computer to offer surface GPS navigation with full-color onscreen mapping and location reference — so you can easily mark your dive entry and exit points.
Once underwater, the proven Bühlmann ZHL-16c algorithm makes sure you’re staying within your dive limits. Selectable tone and vibration alerts help keep you informed while you’re submerged. Returning topside, Descent Mk1 also functions as a robust training companion, offering the best features of our fēnix 5X ultimate multisport GPS watch, including smart notifications³ to help you stay in touch on the go. What’s more, the Descent Mk1 design is so sleek, comfortable and elegantly crafted, you’ll want to wear it as your everyday timepiece.
Charge It Up, Change It Up
Between charges, you can count on up to 40 hours of battery life in dive mode, up to 19 days in watch mode, up to 10 days in smartwatch mode and up to 20 hours in GPS mode (all depending on settings). QuickFit bands let you tailor your wrist-worn style for any daily activity or special occasion — no tools required. And for diving, longer QuickFit straps are included for use over thick wetsuits or dry suits.
Breathe Easier, Dive Better
Providing easy-to-access features for a range of diving activities — including the ability to plan dives on the device for recreational, technical and free diving — Descent Mk1 provides all the key, real-time data you need for a confident dive. The computer is automatically activated when you hit the water, showing your current depth, dive time, water temperature, ascent/descent rate, no-deco time, decompression stop information, battery life and more on the unit’s crisp 1.2” color display.
You can set the audible tone and vibration alarms to provide reminders at critical points in your dive. And up to 6 different gas mixes are supported, including nitrox and trimix (up to 100% oxygen). Configurable conservatism settings let you adjust your personal safety limits.
Multiple Navigation Sensors
In addition to its high-sensitivity GPS and GLONASS satellite tracking for map-based surface navigation, Descent Mk1 also provides a full array of ABC (altimeter, barometer and compass) sensor capabilities for topside navigation. And the easy-to-read compass display is available for underwater use as well. The built-in altimeter provides elevation data, while the tilt-compensated 3-axis electronic compass keeps your bearing — whether you’re moving or not. For quick access to the compass display, a handy “tap to compass” feature lets you simply double-tap the screen instead of pushing the function buttons.
Wrist-based Heart Rate
The Descent Mk1 dive computer uses Garmin Elevate wrist-based heart rate technology to optically scan your pulse (when worn in contact with your skin, not over a wetsuit or dry suit). The dive computer tracks your exertion levels and uploads your heart rate data automatically to your Garmin Connect online account for post-dive review and analysis.
Advanced Multisport Watch Features
Beyond its full range of dive computer functions, Descent Mk1 also offers a complete feature set of sports/training, fitness and outdoor navigation tools, leveraged from our popular fēnix line of high-end multisport watches. You can tap into an array of physiological metrics, running dynamics, fitness tracking features and more — to monitor your workout stats, measure your progress and help avoid injury. Special preloaded activity profiles are provided for swimming, running, biking, hiking, skiing, rowing, paddle boarding and more. Various timekeeping, lap counts and map tracking functions are easily accessible. Plus, for added motivation, you can even download advanced workouts and training plans to your device from Garmin Connect.
Smart Connectivity
When paired with your compatible smartphone, Descent Mk1 makes it easy to receive text messages, emails and smart notifications right on your watch face. It also gives you access to automatic uploads with Garmin Connect, audio prompts, music controls and more. While you’re topside, friends and family members can follow your location and adventures online, in real time, using the LiveTrack feature. Or you can use GroupTrack and your map display to keep tabs on your activity-sharing buddies as you go.
Premium Materials, Elegant Style
Crafted of premium grade materials, the Descent Mk1 dive computer is available in 2 distinctive styles: a stainless steel bezel with treated silicone watch band or a deluxe titanium bezel version with brushed DLC titanium bracelet. Both models offer advanced GPS and GLONASS satellite reception, via an EXO omnidirectional antenna in the bezel, for better reception in challenging environments (versus GPS alone). A bright, high-resolution, full-color Garmin Chroma Display with LED backlighting assures great readability in all lighting conditions, above or below the water. And for added scratch resistance, both models incorporate a high-strength domed sapphire lens.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this have voice prompts? Specifically want to use it for Tabata training. i.e. with app that counts down work/rest intervals |
Answer: | It does not have speaker, so unfortunately no. |
Question: | Does this watch automatically track exercise activity like Fitbit, or do you have to manually start an activity (e.g. a run) from the watch |
Answer: | The Garmin keeps track of everything a Fitbit does, steps ,heart rate, calories, etc. That said, if youre doing something "special", like a long run, by pushing 1 button (top rt.) and touching the watch screen once, it will connect with gps and after you're run, will show you a map of youre route with that run's stats. You can do this for all types of activities, not just running or walking. It even has a treadmill, or cycling setting. I love this watch, i think you will too. Its VERY easy to learn, most activities are done with 1 or 2 touches! |
Question: | Do I need to have a cell phone provider connect service to the watch |
Answer: | No you don’t |
Question: | Does this watch pair with iphone and android phones |
Answer: | Yes, as long as the phone meets our 'Bluetooth' requirements. Please go to support.garmin.com where you'll find FAQ's on the 'Bluetooth' requirements. Debbie with Garmin |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the Garmin Venu´s display stay permanently on |
Answer: | Certain watch faces seem to have more trouble staying on than others. Also, the image does not stay permanently on, just the time. |
Question: | Is the display always on like on the other Garmin watches |
Answer: | Yes you can turn on always on display. |
Question: | How does the always on mode affect the battery life? Can you still get to ~5 days on a charge |
Answer: | No, I don’t think so, probably more like 3. |
Question: | How is this watch different from Vivoactive 4 besides the display |
Answer: | I got the Venu over the Vivoactive 4 simply because of the display. I personally didnt see any notable differences between the two models. if you are looking for detailed differences you should compare the specs between the two. The only thing i can see a difference in is the battery life/display. Based on over a month of usage, on average i get a solid 6-7 days of regular usage. |

User questions & answers
Question: | When in "normal" non-exercise mode, can i set the watch face just to display time, day & date |
Answer: | Yes, I wear it as a watch that normally displays time, date and battery life. Then I can toggle thru other displays when I want to see heart rate, steps, weather, calendar, workout, or any of the other features. |
Question: | Does the GPS work if it's covered by a jacket or long sleeved shirt |
Answer: | I purchased this for my wife so I do not use it however I am a surveyor so I do have vast experience with GPS. GPS signals will not be hindered by thin materials such as cloth. Inside buildings with wood and shingle roofs will throw the location of a bit reducing the accuracy. GPS signals simply do not penetrate metal objects. That being said you should not experience any loss of signal or accuracy using typical clothing items. You may experience some issues if the device was covered with something metallic such as those solar blankets. Perhaps a good experiment to ease your mind is use your cell phone's GPS tucked into your sleeve as the technology is nearly identical in all small consumer products. |
Question: | Is it water resistant |
Answer: | Yes, it is...I looked at the manual and the water rating is actually 5 ATM (atmospheres), not 5 meters. 5 ATM actually equates to about 50 meters deep, so technically you could swim or shower with this watch just fine. Just be aware that this model doesn't currently have any swim tracking features built in so there's not much of a point to swimming with it anyway (although you can install apps from Garmin Connect IQ, so perhaps there is a swim tracking app on there).Source: http://www.garmin.com/en-US/legal/waterrating(the "Swim" section of the table on that page has a footnote which references devices rated at 5ATM) |
Question: | Does this watch have continuous heart rate monitoring like the fitbit surge |
Answer: | I am not familiar with the fitbit however this garmin 235 monitors your heart rate constantly as long as you are wearing it. I wear mine even while I am sleeping. It is neat to see my resting heartbeat. Love it! |

It’s easy to transfer music from your computer and then queue up your favorite playlist for easy listening through Bluetooth headphones. You can even sync your carefully crafted playlists from select music streaming services to your watch for more ad-free listening. Paying Made Easy
Always on the run? Feel free to leave your phone and wallet behind. Forerunner 645 Music features Garmin Pay contactless payment solution, which lets you pay for purchases with your watch. Use it just about anywhere you can tap your card to pay. A bottle of water here, a bite to eat there — just pay, and keep on moving.
Tune up Your Training
We’re making it easier to get the data you need to improve your form. Let Forerunner 645 Music measure crucial running metrics that you can use to analyze your performance. Biomechanical measurements, such as cadence, stride length, ground contact time and balance, vertical oscillation and vertical ratio, are the key to understanding your form so you can bring your best on race day. These metrics are available with the addition of a compatible heart rate strap or the compact Running Dynamics Pod, which clips right onto your waistband. Also, take advantage of feature sets to help with cycling and even swim training. In the pool, Forerunner 645 will track your distance, pace, stroke count and more.
Monitor Your Performance
Just how effective is your current training plan? Forerunner 645 Music will help you monitor your training and recovery so you can better prepare for a race or training cycle. Training status is a performance monitoring tool that automatically evaluates your recent exercise history and performance indicators to let you know if you’re training productively, peaking or overreaching. The anaerobic training effect metric opens a window of insight to a critical dimension of training, telling you how your training is improving your ability to push the limits. You can even view your overall training load, which measures your exercise volume from the last 7 days and compares it to the optimal range for your fitness and recent training history.
More Ways to Customize
Check out the Connect IQ store, where you can add personality to Forerunner 645 Music by downloading apps, widgets, watch faces and more. It’s easy and — even better — it’s free. New apps are added every day, so you can keep tabs on when your Uber is arriving, turn on your lights at home with the SmartThings app, and even use the AccuWeather MinuteCast app to find out when the rain will start. With the Face It watch face app, choose any image from your photo library, make some tweaks, and set it as your watch’s face.
Stay Connected on the Run
Forerunner 645 Music makes it easy to run without leaving important smart features behind. Once paired with your compatible smartphone, you’ll be able to receive and even respond to text messages and see social media updates, emails and more right on your wrist. Find your phone, access music controls, and let friends LiveTrack your runs. Syncing your activities to Garmin Connect is for more than just storing your data. Garmin Connect is a thriving online community where people on the go can connect and compete by joining challenges, encourage each other’s successes and even share their triumphs via social media. Garmin Connect is free and available on the web or on your smartphone with the Garmin Connect Mobile app.

User questions & answers
Question: | is this touch screen |
Answer: | Touch screen is garbage for exercise. Sweat + touch screen = no good. |
Question: | How do you tell it is Asian version |
Answer: | Primarily by its part number: APAC: Garmin part 010-01746-16 ROW: Garmin part 010-01746-00 APAC is the Asian version, and ROW is "Rest Of World". Functionally, there isnt much of a difference that you would know about. The APAC (Asian version) lags behind a month to several months for software version updates, but it does catch up eventually. The primary difference according to forums on the subject is language availability. That being said, I have not yet read where anyone having an Asian model could not do everything functionally that everyone else could do, including uploading data to Garmin Connect and usage of the site. This link will show you the picture differences in the packaging -note the part number difference: https://imgur.com/gallery/shzkPSh |
Question: | If it has the wrist heart rate monitor why do we need to buy the heart rate straps |
Answer: | The wrist monitor doesn't work in the water, which is why you'd want the SWIM band. Also, it isn't quite as accurate as a strap, which is what the regular TRI band is for. It also gives you running metrics that just the watch doesn't give you - that said, if you don't want a strap and want the metrics, there is a RD pod product from Garmin you can just clip onto your shorts. Personally, just the watch and the built in monitor are fine for me, as I use this watch primarily for running and biking. |
Question: | Is this the apac (asia pacific) version or the row (rest of world) version |
Answer: | I received mine on 25 March and it's the ROW version. I went with the default "fulfilled by Amazon" via one-day prime delivery. Not sure who the original seller was. |

Forerunner 935
Monitor Your Performance, Training and Recovery
Just how effective is your current training plan? Forerunner 935 will help you monitor your training and recovery so you can better prepare for a race or training cycle. Training status is a new performance monitoring tool that automatically evaluates your recent exercise history and performance indicators to let you know if you’re training productively, peaking or overreaching. The new anaerobic training effect metric opens a window of insight to a critical dimension of training.
Analyze Your Technique
We’re making it easier to get the data you need to improve your form. Let Forerunner 935 measure crucial running metrics that you can use to analyze your performance. Biomechanical measurements such as cadence, stride length, ground contact time and balance, vertical oscillation and vertical ratio are the key to understanding your form so you can bring your best on race day. These metrics are available with the addition of a compatible heart rate strap or the compact Running Dynamics Pod, which clips right onto your waistband.
Run, Sprint, Swim, Bike, Tri
Your routine is anything but routine. Forerunner 935 lets you change things up with ease thanks to built-in activity profiles for running (indoor/outdoor), cycling (indoor/outdoor), swimming (pool/open water), cross-country skiing, paddle sports, trail running, hiking, strength training and many more. For brick workouts and du/triathlon races, the auto multisport feature lets you switch sports with just one button press. The 935 is compatible with advanced workouts for running, cycling — and even pool swimming.

When paired with your compatible smartphone, Forerunner 935 also gives you access to automatic uploads to Garmin Connect, audio prompts, music controls and more. Let your loved ones follow your runs and rides in real time with LiveTrack — or use GroupTrack, which lets you keep tabs on your riding buddies as you go. For getting your data to and from the cloud, if you like the quick connection Wi-Fi provides, 935 can do that, too.
Follow Your Heart
Wrist-based heart rate might be an easy choice when you want to move without restrictions on race day, but Forerunner 935 gives you the option to tap into much more data with the addition of a compatible heart rate strap. A chest strap heart rate monitor (like HRM-Run or HRM-Tri) unlocks advanced features such as lactate threshold and the HRV (heart rate variability) stress test.

Performance That Puts the X in Excellence
Your Roadmap to Success
Whether you’re in the city or on the trail, your fēnix sport watch’s mapping and navigation features help keep you oriented and on course. Full-color TOPO mapping comes preloaded, with map data optimized for at-a-glance navigation and location tracking. The maps feature Trendline popularity routing, which uses billions of miles of Garmin Connect data to help you find and follow the best trails and routes. Especially helpful when you’re away from your home turf, this feature lets you quickly see the most-used, locally validated pathways.
Do Better Going Higher
When the terrain gets steeper and you have some serious climbing ahead, your fēnix 5X Plus has special ascent features that can really help. The ClimbPro page provides real-time information on current and upcoming climbs. See the climb gradient, distance and elevation gain for each ascent segment as well as a progress marker that shows how much farther you have to go. On strenuous climbs, the watch’s Pulse Ox Acclimation sensor provides additional information. This sensor uses light beams to gauge the absorption of hemoglobin in your bloodstream, so you can assess how well your body’s oxygen levels are adjusting to the thinner air at higher altitudes.
Multinetwork Navigation
Every fēnix 5 Plus Series watch features multinetwork (GPS, GLONASS and Galileo) satellite reception to track in more challenging environments than GPS alone. In addition to map-based guidance, each watch also provides a set of ABC (altimeter, barometer and compass) sensor capabilities for outdoor navigation. The built-in altimeter provides elevation data to accurately monitor ascent and descent for activities such as hiking, while the tilt-compensated three-axis electronic compass keeps your bearing — whether you’re moving or not.
Advanced Performance Metrics
All fēnix 5 Plus Series watches are packed with sophisticated training features to help monitor your form and performance. Tap into physiological metrics, running dynamics and more to track your workout stats, measure your progress and fine-tune your form. Training status automatically evaluates your recent exercise history and performance indicators to let you know if you’re overtraining, maintaining or peaking. An anaerobic training effect metric helps you see how your training is improving your ability to push the limits. You can also view your overall training load, which measures your exercise volume from the last 7 days and compares it to the optimal range for your fitness and recent training history. Special preloaded activity profiles are provided for swimming, running, biking, hiking, skiing, rowing, paddle boarding and more. For added motivation, download advanced workouts and training plans from Garmin Connect.
Wrist-based Heart Rate
On another upbeat note, Elevate wrist heart rate technology lets you monitor your estimated heart rate without wearing a chest strap. In addition to counting steps and monitoring sleep, the watch uses heart rate to provide calories burned information and quantify the intensity of your fitness activities. It also measures your heart rate variability to calculate a stress score that helps you assess what level of activity your body is ready for.
A Little Traveling Music
Got a power song that gets you pumped up for a race or tough workout? Now with fēnix 5X Plus, you can enjoy phone-free listening on the go, with up to 500 songs stored right on your watch. It’s easy to download music and queue up your favorites so you can enjoy them anywhere, anytime through wirelessly connected Bluetooth headphones (sold separately). You can even sync your carefully crafted playlists from select music streaming services (may require premium subscription by a third-party music provider) to your watch for more ad-free listening. So leave your phone behind when you head out for a run or a ride, because the music that keeps you moving is right there on your wrist.
Pay with a Wave of Your Hand
To help keep pace with your active lifestyle, fēnix 5X Plus features our Garmin Pay contactless payment solution. Use it to pay for purchases so you can breeze through checkout lines while leaving your cash and cards at home. Try it anywhere there’s a scanner for contactless payments.
Stay Smartly Connected
All fēnix 5 Plus Series models support smart notifications when paired with a compatible device. Receive emails, texts and alerts right on your watch — whether you're on the trail, on the golf course or simply away from your desk. Other connected features include automatic uploads to our Garmin Connect online fitness community, live tracking, GroupTrack and social media sharing.
Premium Materials, Robust Performance
Crafted of premium-grade materials, the fēnix 5 Plus Series is available in a variety of finish choices, including PVD-coated stainless steel bezel with treated silicone watch band, or — for those who want the comfort of a lighter weight metal that’s 30% stronger than steel, and — there’s a deluxe titanium bezel version with brushed titanium bracelet. On either version, a bright, high-resolution, full-color Garmin Chroma Display with LED backlighting assures great readability in all ambient conditions. And transflective technology that reflects and transmits light at the same time enables the watch face to become even more readable under intense sunlight. For added scratch resistance, all fēnix 5X Plus series models incorporate a high-strength domed sapphire lens.
Custom Apps, Watch Faces and Bands
You can customize any fēnix 5 Plus Series watch with free downloads from our Connect IQ store. Change your watch face, add data fields or get apps and widgets for information at a glance. There’s also a wide selection of QuickFit bands in your choice of premium leather, metal or silicone — so it’s easy to mix and match styles to go with any sport or activity. No tools are required to make the transformation. Just swap, click and go. With Garmin, you can add personality to your watch that’s uniquely you.
Running Power
Add power data to your training by downloading our Running Power app from the Connect IQ store onto your compatible watch. Developed by Garmin Labs, the Running Power app taps into metrics — such as pace, vertical oscillation, grade and even local wind conditions — to determine the amount of power you’re applying at the ground as you run. When you know how much power you’re expending from minute to minute and mile to mile, you’re better able to pace yourself, which can help keep you from tiring out too quickly. The best news? If you already own the right Garmin devices, adding power to your run is free. All you need is a fēnix 5 and one of these accessories: HRM-Run, HRM-Tri or the Running Dynamics Pod. Learn more.

User questions & answers
Question: | To get the advanced running data and analysis, i know i need a chest strap. does the strap need to be hrm run, or can it be hrm tri |
Answer: | I have the HRM Tri and I can get all advanced running data and analysis. The only difference between them is that the Tri version has a memory inside, so it stores data from the swimming portion. Other than that, they are the same. |
Question: | How is the durability of this watch |
Answer: | My worked great for 18 months. I loved it. Wore it daily. 2 full ironman races 3 halves and several other smaller races. Then I used it for 2 Xterra races. It quit halfway through Worlds on Maui. Bummer. Near as I can tell one of the buttons is frozen. I guess mountain biking is too much for it. I'm ordering a second watch but this time I will save it for training and races only. Get a cheapo Timex for daily wear and no more Xterra races with the Garmin just to be safe. |
Question: | Can the watch be charged while running |
Answer: | All the functions seem to work with the charging clip attached, but the clip would be incredibly uncomfortable if attached to the watch while being worn. The clip attaches to the watch at the "3 o'clock" position and is fairly bulky. It would likely interfere with the function of the on-board heart rate monitor since it clips to the bottom and top of the watch. |
Question: | Will this sync with my Commodore |
Answer: | What a funny thread. Hey, I had a Commodore 64 and a tape recorder for storage! And before that TR99 4A. It was too expensive to expand. Nice piece of early 80s computer history. |
