12 best poe switches

A Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch is a network switch that provides power and data transmission to networked devices over a single Ethernet cable. This technology simplifies the deployment and management of networked devices such as IP cameras, access points, and VoIP phones. Here are some key points about PoE switches:

  1. Power over Ethernet (PoE) Technology: PoE technology enables the transfer of electrical power alongside data through Ethernet cables. It eliminates the need for separate power cables and outlets for devices, reducing installation complexity and costs.

  2. PoE Standards: There are several PoE standards, with the most common being IEEE 802.3af (PoE) and IEEE 802.3at (PoE+). PoE provides up to 15.4 watts of power per port, while PoE+ can deliver up to 30 watts per port. Higher power variants like 60W and 90W are also available for power-hungry devices.

  3. Device Compatibility: PoE switches are commonly used to power and connect devices like IP cameras, wireless access points, IP phones, networked lighting systems, and even some IoT devices. However, not all devices are PoE-compatible, so it's essential to check device specifications.

  4. Managed vs.Unmanaged PoE Switches: PoE switches come in both managed and unmanaged variants. Managed switches offer advanced features like VLAN support, QoS (Quality of Service), and remote monitoring and management. Unmanaged switches are more straightforward and plug-and-play.

  5. Power Budget: The power budget of a PoE switch determines how much power it can provide to connected devices simultaneously. It's crucial to consider the total power requirements of your devices and ensure the switch can deliver enough power.

  6. Installation and Safety: When installing PoE switches, it's important to follow safety guidelines to prevent electrical hazards. Ensure proper cable management and cable ratings to avoid overheating and power loss.

  7. PoE Injector vs. PoE Switch: In cases where you have a non-PoE switch, you can use a PoE injector to add PoE capabilities to individual ports. However, PoE switches are more efficient and scalable for powering multiple devices.

  8. Cost Considerations: PoE switches can be more expensive than standard switches due to their added power delivery capabilities. The cost varies based on the number of PoE ports and power capacity.

  9. Future-Proofing: When selecting a PoE switch, consider your future needs. Newer PoE standards are emerging, such as 802.3bt, which can deliver even more power. Investing in a switch with support for these standards can help future-proof your network.

  10. Network Planning: Careful planning is crucial when deploying PoE switches. Consider factors like the location of devices, cable lengths, and power requirements to ensure a reliable and efficient network.

In summary, PoE switches are essential components in modern networking environments, enabling the efficient and streamlined deployment of powered network devices. When choosing a PoE switch, it's important to consider factors like power requirements, device compatibility, managed vs. unmanaged options, and future needs to make the right selection for your network.

User questions & answers

Question: v? or 220v? Auto-volt
Answer: If bought in USA 110v
Question: Does this support 10gbe
Answer: No it is just a gigabit switch, 1 gps. Also, there are no uplink ports on this switch, some switches (mostly managed high end) have uplink ports that will do 10gbe.
Question: If i have true poe cameras, do i still need a poe injector, or will this switch allow me to connect 4 camera feeds to one output to the nvr receiver
Answer: Provided your cameras adhere to the 48V POE standard adopted by cisco, polycom, yealink, grandstream and others, then all is fine - but some consumer targeted devices cheat and use 12V power injectors with their own creative pseudo-POE putting 12V wall warts wired onto pairs of the Ethernet cable with their own (cheap) "power injectors" which are not compatible with the Ieee POE definition. I have yet to find a POE inserter that used 48V and was not compliant, so usually the voltage of the wall wart that ships with the product will guide you down the right path.
Question: Will this switch do 24v passive? The description is insanely vague
Answer: No. This provides 802.3af and 802.3at. The common 24v PoE used in this arena is a non-standard form favored by Mikrotik and Ubiquiti. For that, you are looking for an Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch/ToughSwitch. There may be others. It is safe to say that if a device supports 24v Passive PoE it will say so. 24v Passive is not a standard but is very common in WISP equipment. Devices which only say they support 'PoE' are indicating that they support 802.3af.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it matter which port you plug the cable from the router into the back of the switcher
Answer: Some switch boxes have a dedicated port (usually far right port or far left port) to plug the cable from the router into the switch box. If it is not labeled or stated so, then it does not matter. The signal will find its way back to the router.
Question: Is this switch 802.3af compliant
Answer: The TP_Link T1500-PCT - Copied from TP-Link website the following. "Supports 24 802.3at/af-compliant PoE+ ports with a total power supply of 180W" thanks for the question. Have a great day
Question: What voltage output PoE does this switch provide 24v or 48v? I have a 48 volt phone and a 24 volt camera and a 24 volt access point that I need power
Answer: 48V active POE only. This won't work with a 24v Ubiquiti device (it received. 1 star review because of this) unless said Ubiquiti device also supports 48v, in which case you usually have to set the device manually (currently AP-AC-Pro and AP-AC-HD)
Question: I want to set up 4 poe ip security camera network with this switch, blue iris and a laptop computer. Do i need a NVR or other hardware
Answer: The switch seems to handle the three POE ip cams i have installed just fine. "foscams" Which cameras are you going to use? I also have Blue IRIS insalled on a PC. Blue Iris does a decent job at managing the cameras, but i have noticed that performce is weak when trying to do continues recording from 3 cameras. Some of that may be the pc im using but i am unwilling to invest in a new computer for just the purpose of running the cameras. There is not a lot of documentation with the software and its not very intuitive. I have 4 total and it will work with a wide verity of cameras. I dont have any experience with NVR's. I have looked into them but they seem pretty pricy. If you have not bought any cameras or equipment yet, I would strongly point you in the direction of CCTV systems. You can easily get a system for the same cost of buying 4 POE cameras. I wish someone had told me this before i got started. You will still be required to pull the cable to cameras either way. I think the upside with CCTV would be that the dVR is doing all the recording continusly. They do a great "Superior" job at what they are designed to do. PC based systems are kind of shakey at this price point. In most cases you can record up to two weeks worth at a time, with several cameras with a DVR system and have alerts sent and motion triggers. I have seen the difference in between my setup and two different CCTV systems. One of them "lorex" and the second "swan" If I had it to do all over again i would go with CCTV. Id buy a 4 camera set with a dVR with room to expand up to 8 cameras. I started with one camera and now have four. Its good to have room to grow. Just FYI I have seen a 4 camera setup with 4, 700 lines of resolution cameras for less or close then what your going to spend on POE. One last note you will also be able to remote monitor with your smart phone or web browser just like using POE and Blue Iris. More info then you wanted I know, but just my 2 cents!

User questions & answers

Question: How many are full POE ports
Answer: I don't have this switch, but according to the description 24 of the ports are POE, but you need to make sure the power supply in the switch will support that also.
Question: Vlan support for untagged ports that are not on default vlan
Answer: It seems crazy that they would not support untagging ports to vlans other that the default vlan1. Have you ran into switches that do not support this? Seems safe enough to order then, test immediately then return if you can't make it work. How about a call to their tech support or pre-sales support.
Question: does it have dhcp configuration capability
Answer: No. It does not.
Question: Is it safe to use this for non poe devices
Answer: Yes. It detects if the device is POE. If not, it functions like a normal switch.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the rated operating temperature range
Answer: Operating temperature range: -10° to 55°C
Question: No power to cameras. All the indicators lights are blinking. Removed power and all cameras from unit. Plugged power back in, same issues
Answer: Try connecting one camera at a time. Are you sure you're not exceeding the max power? If it does the same thing - the switch may be defective.
Question: Are these active poe or passive switches ?? can not connect non poe devices into the switch without a splitter = passive = non ieee compliant
Answer: It is an active POE switch, and the access device needs to be an active POE device. If your device is a passive POE device, please confirm whether your device contains a DC 12V access hole. If it contains a DC 12V access hole, please use our switch with an active POE splitter. If your passive POE device does not have a DC 12V access hole, then our switch is not suitable for your device. It is recommended to confirm that your device is a passive POE device that supports what voltage, and then consider choosing a passive POE switch or a POE power supply
Question: Rlc-520 installing reolink poe camera but does not boot? any tips
Answer: Dear customer May I ask if your camera is a poe camera that supports the international standard IEEE802.3AF/AT protocol (because there are two types of poe: one supports the IEEE802.3AF/AT protocol, the other does not support the IEEE802.3AF/AT protocol ), our switch is a standard poe switch that supports the IEEE802.3AF/AT protocol, so if you connect a poe device that does not support the IEEE802.3AF/AT protocol, it will not work. If you can’t tell whether the camera supports IEEE802. 3AF/AT agreement, you can send me the product introduction or parameters of your camera to see, I will judge what is the reason, and provide you with a solution

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a safety feature where it won't provide the power to the ethernet cable if the device is too large? like a pc
Answer: Yes. It will not have POE unless it is required by the device. It will not push power to a laptop or computer if not needed.
Question: U say "daisy-chain",can I have 1 switch my Garage with cat6 from that 1 to another switch in house and cat6 from the House switch to my router
Answer: Yes. You can pretty much do that with any switch but this one does have up links.
Question: Does not seem to support "passive" poe. is this correct? please mention this in the description
Answer: You don't understand the term "passive PoE" Check Wiki. Passive PoE is simply ANY power scheme that does not use standard PoE or PoE+ (802.3af or 802.3at). Generally, it is used when you use your own (or a manufactures) power injectors - in which case it will work with all switches. So there is no such thing as a switch that PROVIDES passive PoE because there is not standard for Passive PoE. Passive PoE could be 12 volts, 24 volts, or even 48 volts or whatever with varying amperages. Some manufactures support their own products and in that sense you could say that that switch supports their propitiatory implementation of "passive poe" - like some Ubiquity switches, which are designed to give 24 VDC to their access points. But don't expect the manufacturing to list something that does NOT contain a feature that is not a standard, and no one in the IT field would expect to see.
Question: It says poe+ (24w) but 60w total / 4 = only 15w per port so is this not full poe+ to all ports
Answer: I'm confused by some of the answers to this particular question. The description clearly says "Hi-PoE at port 1, PoE+ at port 2-4" ... yet several people who have answered this question claim that there is only one POE+ port, and the other 3 are regular POE ports. The bottom line here is simple: If the description is correct, then these people who are claiming that there is only one POE+ port are clearly wrong. I tend to believe the description, not all the people who answered this question, because it only stands to reason that the manufacturer knows more about these switches than the folks who volunteer to answer these questions. On the other hand, manufacturers have been known to make false claims, or simple mistakes, in their product descriptions ... so I would love for the manufacturer to clear up this issue once and for all.

Unique Design PoE+ Switch

The POE-SW502 is a high performance PoE switch with unique functions, making it an ideal choice to set up a reliable wired network in your home or office. Features include:

Extension of Power and Data - Up to 250 meters (820 feet)

Extend mode increases the maximum transmission distance from 100 meters to 250 meters on all four PoE ports. Choose between 'Default' and 'Extend' mode based on your specific needs.

- Default Mode: Up to 100 meters transmission distance at 10/100Mbps data speed.

- Extend Mode: Up to 250 meters transmission distance at 10Mbps data speed.

4 PoE Ports - Max Total PoE Power of 60W

Port 1: up to 60W / Port 2-4: up to 30W each

Note: Total power of all 4 ports cannot exceed 60W.

Assign a total of 60W PoE power across all ports based on the device connected. If connecting four cameras requiring 15W each, 60W power will be split equally to four ports. If a device requiring 40W power is plugged at port 1, there will be 20W left for the rest of the ports, and so forth.

High Power PoE Port on Port 1 - Up to 60W on a Single Port

The POE-SW502 features a special design with Hi-PoE on port 1, allowing up to 60W of PoE power on a single port - ideal for high power devices such like IP PTZ cameras.

Note: Total power of all 4 ports cannot exceed 60W.

2 Uplink Ports

Unlike most PoE switches with only 1 uplink port, POE-SW502 has an extra uplink port, making network setups easier and more convenient. With one uplink port connected to the router, the other uplink can be connected to another PoE switch (to daisy-chain connections), a NVR, or any non-PoE equipment (ex. a laptop), allowing you to save a port on your main router / switch.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this include the part to mount to a rack
Answer: The 16/24/48 can be rack mounted but not the smaller ones that are also on this product page.
Question: is the 24-port a fanless switch
Answer: The TL-SG1024 is fanless.
Question: I don't see any ports labeled uplink for connection to my other switch does this mean it no capable of being connected as an expansion switch
Answer: The question is vague. Everyone else has answered the base question, but what might be implied is that a high end server-rack quality switch will have a port that is generally the next step up from the other ports, so in this case there would be a 10Gb port for the "uplink" so as to not bottleneck the other devices trying to make full use of the 1 Gb ports. The REALLY high end switches has a Fiber "uplink" port to completely eliminate such bottlenecks, but again, that is the realm of rack quality switches. But yes, as everyone else stated, any port can be the uplink, usually it is the one closest to where that uplink goes. At work, I have an 8 port Gb switch. Port 8 is closest to the wall so I use that for the uplink and I use 1-7 for all my re-imaging tasks or users that need to connect to sort out a problem. For non-rack switches, you will always give up one port to the machine-gods and the rest to connect as you wish, so when shopping, always keep in mind your total ports needed equals "# of devices +1 (uplink)".
Question: What is the difference between the easy smart and unmanaged models and is it worth the extra cost for the easy smart
Answer: Unmanaged switches are plug and play - connect one of the ports to your existing LAN via Ethernet to receive additional physical Ethernet port connectivity via the switch. The Easy Smart variation offers some basic management features such as QoS for a Lag-Free Experience, IGMP Snooping for Multicast Optimization, and VLAN for Security.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this power my cisco 7960 and 7960G phones
Answer: Dear customer, Upon doing some research, it seems the Cisco phones mentioned are pre-IEEE standard and would require a specific card within a Cisco Catalyst switch to be powered - any other switch (including ours) will not be able to be power the phones. Thank you, Taylor PoE Depot
Question: Can this take the heat if i place in the attic? What is the operating temp range on this device
Answer: Not sure what the operating temp range is however if you are using it for cameras or up phones it will generate a bit of heat. It’s never a good idea to put a switch anywhere where there is little air flow or where the ambient temperatures go above 80 or below 40. I know, not much help.
Question: Will this work with Amcrest PoE cameras
Answer: Dear customer,As long as the cameras you are using are IEEE 802.3af or 802.3at compatible, then it is very likely this POE switch will work to power them.Thank you,TaylorPoE Depot
Question: Will work with aps ubiquiti lr 24v
Answer: Dear customer,Unfortunately BV-Tech PoE switches (including this one) do not support 24V / passive PoE as it is not a standard implementation; you would need a 24V injector from Ubiquiti or another 24V-compatible switch.Thank you,TaylorPoE Depot

User questions & answers

Question: What is the actual dimension of the 16-port switch? The dimension in production information is the size of shipping box
Answer: 11.3 × 4.4 × 1.0 in as found on the manufacturer's site https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/16-port-switch/tl-sg116/
Question: Do i still need to use a poe injector to each camera if i have this switch
Answer: As the other answers point out, you can use the 4 POE ports for a camera. Some cheap injectors are dangerous for your equipment. Be sure the injector implements the IEEE 802.3af or 802.3at standard, and then you'll be safe.
Question: what do i need to daisy chain three of these with fiber
Answer: without knowing the distance between switches, you would need to research if you need single mode SFPs, or if multi-mode, either short or long range will do. Depending on the SFPs, you would then need the proper cable as each has it's own requirement. multi-mode I would recommend OM3. Single mode requires it's own single mode duplex type cable.
Question: is this a managed switch
Answer: No, it is what TP-Link calls a SMART switch. There is L2/L3 managed Switch, Smart Switch, Easy Smart Switch and Unmanaged Switch in TP-Link official website, this article will give a brief account about the features and application scenarios of the respective switch. Unmanaged SwitchYou are not able to configure the unmanaged switch because it doesn’t support any configuration interface or options. It is plug-and-play, so you only need to connect your computer or other network devices to the unmanaged switch directly. Therefore, if you do not need any L2 features, but only need to extend the number of Ethernet ports, unmanaged switch is the right switch for you. Easy Smart SwitchYou can use Utility or Web interface (Web only for TL-SG1016DE and TL-SG1024DE) to manage easy smart switch and configure basic settings, such as VLAN, QoS and a few L2 features like LAG, IGMP Snooping and Port Mirroring. If there are no advanced applications needed, easy smart switch should be the best choice for you. Normally, easy smart switch will be found in the home, SOHO or small business. Smart SwitchSmart switch can be managed by Web interface, Telnet, SSH and SNMP. It supports far more L2 features and better QoS than easy smart switch, additionally, smart switch supports more advanced functions like ACL and Spanning Tree protocol, if you want to support a solution for one small company or colleague with a lower price, the Smart switch is the indispensable device. L2 Managed SwitchL2 managed switch has a console port for CLI (Command Line Interface), it has all the managing ways and advanced features that smart switch has, besides, L2 managed switch has abundant VLAN and Multicast features as well as cluster for logical stacking and Network Security features including 802.1X and IP-MAC binding. So you can use L2 managed switch to build a resiliency and availability network or even build up a small ISP Access Network. L3 Managed SwitchL2 switch could only work in Layer 2--Data Link Layer of OSI model. But Layer 3 switch has some L3 functions just like a traditional router--static routing, routing protocol like OSPF and ECMP, multicast routing protocol and DHCP relay.Compared with a traditional router, L3 switch has lower cost but better performance in packet routing speed because the layer 3 switch routes packets by its hardware--ASIC instead of CPU, once it learned the IP address, it will forward packets by switching performance. It is mainly used in the core layer of a middle sized business network, providing better hardware switching performance in routing.

Product features

Power over Ethernet

4 of the 8 Auto-Negotiation RJ45 ports of the switch support power over ethernet (PoE) function. These PoE ports support power up to 55W and they can automatically detect and supply power with those IEEE 802.3af compliant powered devices(PDs).

Power Overload Protection

When total power consumption exceeds 55W, the intelligent power management will cut the lower priority port power off to ensure the high priority port's power supply and protect the device from power overload operation.
