14 best network switches
Network switches are fundamental networking devices used to connect multiple devices within a local area network (LAN). They play a crucial role in data communication by efficiently forwarding data between devices. Here's what you need to know about network switches:
Functionality: Network switches operate at Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) or Layer 3 (Network Layer) of the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model. They examine data frames and make forwarding decisions based on the destination MAC (Media Access Control) address (Layer 2) or IP address (Layer 3).
Device Connectivity: Switches connect various network devices, including computers, servers, printers, access points, and other switches. They create a wired network infrastructure that allows these devices to communicate with each other.
Port Count: Network switches come in various configurations, offering a different number of ports to accommodate different network sizes. Common configurations include 8, 16, 24, 48, and even higher port counts.
Managed vs. Unmanaged: Switches can be either managed or unmanaged. Unmanaged switches are plug-and-play devices that require no configuration, making them easy to set up. Managed switches provide advanced features like VLAN support, Quality of Service (QoS) settings, and remote management.
VLAN Support: Many managed switches support Virtual LANs (VLANs), which enable network segmentation for improved security, traffic management, and resource allocation.
QoS (Quality of Service): Managed switches often include QoS settings, allowing administrators to prioritize specific types of network traffic, such as VoIP or video streaming, to ensure consistent performance.
STP (Spanning Tree Protocol): STP is a network protocol used by switches to prevent network loops and ensure redundancy. It's particularly important in larger network configurations.
PoE (Power over Ethernet): Some switches offer PoE functionality, which allows them to provide power to connected devices like IP cameras, phones, and access points over the Ethernet cable. This eliminates the need for separate power sources.
Stacking: In larger networks, multiple switches can be stacked together to create a single logical unit. Stacking simplifies management and enhances performance.
Redundancy: High-quality network switches often include features for redundancy, such as dual power supplies and hot-swappable components, to ensure network uptime.
Security: Switches can play a role in network security by supporting features like MAC address filtering, port security, and access control lists (ACLs) to control which devices can access the network.
Monitoring and Management: Managed switches offer remote monitoring and management capabilities through a web-based interface or command-line interface (CLI). This allows administrators to configure and monitor switch performance.
Network switches are a foundational component of modern computer networks, enabling efficient data transmission and connectivity. When selecting a switch, consider factors like the number of devices to be connected, the need for advanced features, and the scalability requirements of your network. Properly configured switches contribute to a stable and high-performance network infrastructure.

User questions & answers
Question: | I am using cat 8 cables. Will this product work? If not what other switch do i need |
Answer: | I think it sounds most like an MI Audio crunch distortion, which it is supposedly a clone of. The Crunch Distortion is supposedly based on the Rat. I've never played a rat, so I don't want to make the comparison. I will say for like $30 the joyo sounds really good, and after about six months of playing its had no issues. hope I helped a little |
Question: | Should this connect to arris tg1672g without any configuration on either side? the arris combines "..a 4-port gigabit router.." not working for me |
Answer: | Mono output , and why wud u use headphones??? |
Question: | Do i have to have 1gig internet speed to have this or no |
Answer: | Yes, i have used it for bassPretty cool, very agressive ...noisyBut if you dig that for bass it will work.If you're into gutter punk its perfect |
Question: | how to get plug and play to work? 14 ports not putting out IP, have modem and wifi router connected, but cant get other ports to work |
Answer: | Go for it. My son uses one with a small Crate ss practice amp, and it sounds phenomenal. He has to keep the volume on the pedal very low though - set above 9 o'clock it was not pleasant. Set around 8 o'clock sounded great. I tried it through a JC-120 and I thought it sounded as good as my George Dennis Wizard Rock, which is normally my favorite distortion pedal for JC. But again, finding the sweet spot in the pedal's output level was important. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What port would you plug the lan cable coming from the router into on the 24 port gigaswitch |
Answer: | It should work fine. Keep in mind this is a gigabit switch and cat8 would more typically be used for 10gb networking but its all compatible. |
Question: | Is this model wall-mountable? Does it have the little "screw-guides" to hang it on the wall |
Answer: | Your configuration should look like this: (Internet) Cable -> ARRIS TG1672G -> Port 1, 2, 3, or 4 -> Netgear 8-Port Switch Your Cable Modem provides 4 Gigabit Ethernet Ports and when you connect the Netgear 8-Port switch you lose 2 ports (one on the cable modem & one on the Netgear and end up with 10 Gigabit Ethernet Ports instead of 4. No configuration is needed. If one of the devices you're adding is a Wi-Fi router, then your configuration will look like this: (Internet) Cable -> ARRIS TG1672G -> Port 1 -> Wi-Fi Router -> Netgear 8-Port Switch. If you want all devices to be able to see each other, then you can have up to 7 of them plugged into the Netgear Router. |
Question: | what is the difference between the smart switch and the unmanaged switch |
Answer: | No. It's top speed is Gigabit (1000 Mbps), but it will work with 10/100 Mbps devices well. It's not just limited to Internet but any devices that wish to communicate with each other i.e. computer to Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, etc ... and usually those devices have gigabit Ethernet ports so they can communicate with each other at the gigabit speeds. |
Question: | Does this have a web GUI or do I have to use the TP-Link software for configuration |
Answer: | Make your flow as follows: Modem -> Wi-Fi Router -> Netgear 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch. All your devices (up to 15 of them) will get their IP address from the Wi-Fi Router. You may also want to consider labeling your cables. I have two 16-port switches, one Unmanaged (for Internet) and one Managed (for private network), and all the cables are both color-coded and labeled. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is link aggregation supported |
Answer: | One hundred meters (aka 328 feet) from plug to plug is the specification of cat 5 and cat 5e cable between "active" devices such as a computer and a switch (such as this TP-Link device). Note that hubs are (almost always) not active devices. |
Question: | If this is used on a desktop wouldn't it be better to have the ethernet connections (cables) on the rear along with the power source |
Answer: | Yep! That's exactly what this thing is made to do. Just plug a cable from the wall into any of the ports on the back, then plug the two cables from the computer and Xbox into two ports on the back of the switch. Should work like a charm! |
Question: | Looking at the picture, and at my current switch, I don't see a "uplink" port that would connect to the router. Why is that |
Answer: | Short answer...yes. Long answer... because it is a switch and not a hub, all of the ports are capable of being uplink (to a router or another switch) or device port. As stated in the instructions that came with the TL-SG1005D I ordered, "The switch is plug-and-play. In addition, the Auto-MDI/MDIX cable detection on all ports eliminates the demand of crossover cable or Uplink port." I hope that answers your question. |
Question: | Any idea how this compares to the SE2500, which is more popular? Other than looks |
Answer: | People confuse routers and switches all the time. A router has brains, it logs in to your service provider and gives you access to their internet and controls your home network IP's. (DHCP Server which actually routes traffic for your home network) Most Routers have a built in 4 port switch, so thus people associate that is a router. it really isn't...it's a switch built into your router. ...This device you are looking at is simply a switch, and will work automatically with your router to assign IP addresses to each port/device. It will NOT slow down your throughput, but remember, you can only get a dedicated amount of speed from your service provider. So if you have a 100mb internet connection, that is all you can download at anyone time...so if you have two devices downloading constantly at the same time, they will both only get 50mbs each essentially. That said, most of the time, the internet traffic you are using does not conflict with each other and you will not notice any difference. On thing to remember, for the full speed of this switch, or any router/switch, to be utilized, you need cat5e or cat6 Ethernet cables. Cat5e is just as fast as cat6 but for shorter distances. If you have to go a long way, use the 6, but that is overkill for most home networks. Still I would go with 6 to save yourself the need for future cable upgrades if they are hard to get to, and with this day and age of HD TV, and sharing video, I would over build rather than under-build. |

Answer: | No. The connection of the cables is made in front to see the connectivity link or if you have any problem with the cable. |
Question: | Can this be powered by USB |
Answer: | Most switches these days no longer have a dedicated "uplink" port but instead can use any of it's ports as an uplink port. http://www.linksys.com/us/support-article?articleNum=139602 According to the article "Newer models of Linksys switches (such as the SE1500, SE2500, and SE2800 models) do not have Uplink ports. Instead, they have auto-sensing ports that are capable of detecting either straight-through or crossover cables." On my switches I use port 1. |
Question: | Can you use the port simultaneously |
Answer: | According to Linksys support: "...they have the same functionalities. Their difference is that the SE3005 is made of metal, while the SE2500 is made of hard plastic." |

Question: | Is this switch ieee 802.3af/at/bt-compliant |
Answer: | Yes, but be aware that your upstream port (which connects to your router/modem/etc) can only run at 1000mbps -- which means that if you have four devices plugged in, they'll have to share that single 1000mbps uplink. |
Question: | Can you plug a switch into this switch |
Answer: | 8-port model also doesn't have wall-mount options. I'll probably return it since the nicer metal one is only $1 more and has key-hole mounts. |
Question: | What port does the wifi router plug into? Does it matter |
Answer: | The F (for fast) S 205 is 10/100 speed, the G (for gigabit) S 105 is 10/100/1000. |
Question: | What does the v s switchmean |
Answer: | The GS205 is Gigabit meaning that it can provide more bandwidth to each system connected than the FS205 can provide. Either should work, just the GS model will be faster providing your internet speed service can take advantage. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the 8port 150w switch silent? tech spec says 35 dba but fanless. is it silent from a few feet away |
Answer: | Yes, 48v 802.3af devices will work |
Question: | Can i use this product to run two uap-ac-pro-us wap |
Answer: | Yes, you can connect 2 switches together with a cable. |
Question: | How come o can get the same switch for 199.00 from ubiquiti |
Answer: | It doesn't matter. I have my wifi router in port 1, just for simplicity sake. It works great. Very happy with the switch, only comment is the fan is slightly louder than most switches I have used. But being a POE switch allows me to use a IP phone with no adapter. |
Question: | Would this work to power ubiquiti networks unifi 802.11ac dual-radio pro access point (uap-ac-pro-us)? need 48v vs 24v in switch description |
Answer: | That is the "vlan" switch. It isn't a true vlan capability, but it blocks broadcast packets, so you can have (for example...) a DHCP server on the LAN side that doesnt interfere with a DHCP server on the upstream port. Most users will probably want to leave it on the "S" side unless you have a very good reason not to. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I put this into a cabinet safely? (e.g., should I be worried that it will overheat |
Answer: | The 5 and 8 ports are fanless, 16 and above have fans. Just make sure you keep space all around the fanless ones for proper airflow. |
Question: | can this be used to boost an ethernet sinal over 300ft of cable |
Answer: | Yes, it has 8 POE+ ports. I noticed that for the AC LITE I had to manually change the port setting to 24V Passive instead of POE+ but the AP AC lit right up with the POE+ active. |
Question: | This would be what I need for Google wifi mesh, since it only has one ethernet port |
Answer: | The switch your looking at is the US-24 which is a non-poe switch. This is the US-24-250W ERP of $399. |
Question: | can you plug this directly into your modem and then connect (wired) to router and pc etc |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it work with a Cisco cablemodem (Cox |
Answer: | As long as the cabinet has some air space you should be fine. I have not noticed a heat issue while using this switch. |
Question: | Does anyone know if it has holes on the bottom for wall mounting |
Answer: | All switches act as repeaters or "boosters" to utilize your term. Cat-5 is limited to 100 meters which is about 330' . In the past I have placed switches at about 200' distance in large factory warehouses to run long distances. They recompile the wave length as attenuation starts around the 300' mark. |
Question: | what does it do |
Answer: | Yes, this is my exact setup. You can not only plug these into the Google Wifi puck that is acting as your main router, but also into any of the pucks you're using to create a stronger Wifi signal elsewhere. The small form factor actually makes these ideal for this scenario. |
Question: | Which port do I connect my router to |
Answer: | Odd that both answers managed to give a completely wrong answer (or, rather, an answer that ignores the reality of the situation). Yes, you can do that, in the sense that the switch doesn't have a dedicated input, so you can connect an Ethernet cable from your modem's output to a port on the switch, then another cable from another port on the switch to the input on the router, then a third cable from the router's output to a third port on the switch, and it should function the same as if you connected the router's input directly to the modem's output, assuming you don't actually plug anything else into it. However, and this is where the other 2 somehow managed to get the answer completely wrong, neither the switch, nor a modem that isn't also a router, is going to function as a DHCP server. As far as consumer devices go, that will require a router. So the above, which is a total waste of 2 of the 5 ports (as well as requiring an otherwise unnecessary cable), is the only sense in which the answer to your question is "yes". In every other sense, including, presumably, the way you actually meant it, the answer is "no", because something needs to act as a DHCP server for all of the devices connected to the switch. And, in your case, that thing is going to be a router. Put another way, your modem, if not acting as a router, is capable of assigning 1, and only 1, IP address. That's why a modem that's not acting as a router has 1, and only 1, active Ethernet port. A router functions as a DHCP server, which means that it's capable of assigning IP addresses to other devices that connect to it. Put even more simply, only 1 device can get to the Internet via a modem that isn't functioning as a router. Multiple devices can get to the Internet via a router. Therefore, logic dictates that you make the router the 1 device that can access the Internet via the modem and then connect everything else to the Internet through that. A switch like this isn't going to remove that limitation. So the router needs to be the only thing connected to the modem's output, so it unquestionably receives the single opportunity to access the Internet. Then a switch like this can be used to connect other devices to the router's output, since, unlike the modem, it's capable of granting multiple devices connected to it access to the Internet. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am looking at the 5 port version of this and only see "unmanaged" as options for buying. The title says "managed." So, which is it |
Answer: | I don't know this modem, but if the output from the modem is an Ethernet 100 it should work fine. |
Question: | The pics show 2.5&5Gb devices connected to main ports but description says only 2 ports support upto 10g is this correct |
Answer: | Just bought two of the TL-SG1005D 5 port units, and yes they both have holes on the bottom for screw mounting to the wall. |
Question: | Fan or Fan-less |
Answer: | It lets you plug more things into your router. This does not replace your router.I use this switch at my entertainment center. My Blu-ray player, Xbox 360 and an external hard drive plugged into the switch. I then have a cable running from this switch to my router. I believe the wired connection is faster and more dependable. It took me longer to type this reply then it did to hook it up. You plug in your devices, and plug in the power cord. Done. |
Question: | I'm looking for a switch for my house. Which is better, the unmanaged plus or the unmanaged |
Answer: | When I connected the router to port #1 I got about 10 mbit speed to any device that was plugged into any other port. when I plugged the router in #5 as the instructions illustrate, I got 100 mbit. verified with speedtest.net. |
