12 best print servers
A print server is a device or software application that manages the printing process on a network. Its main purpose is to facilitate the sharing of printers among multiple users and computers in a networked environment. Here are some key points about print servers:
Print Server Types:
- Hardware-based Print Servers: These are standalone devices that connect to a network and have one or more USB or parallel ports for connecting printers directly. They often include management software for configuration.
- Software-based Print Servers: These are applications or programs that run on a computer and perform the functions of a print server. The computer must remain on for other devices to print.
Print Server Functions:
- Spooling: Print servers manage the print queue and spooling process. Spooling allows multiple print jobs to be stored in a queue and sent to the printer in the order they were received.
- Job Scheduling: Print servers can prioritize and schedule print jobs based on user-defined criteria or priority settings.
- Status Monitoring: They often provide status information about the printer, such as ink or toner levels, paper jams, and other error messages.
Printer Compatibility:
- Print servers can support a wide range of printer types, including inkjet, laser, dot matrix, and multifunction printers, as long as the printer has a compatible interface (e.g., USB, parallel, Ethernet).
Network Protocols:
- Print servers use various network protocols such as TCP/IP, NetBEUI, and AppleTalk to communicate with printers and client devices.
Ease of Installation and Configuration:
- Hardware-based print servers are typically easy to set up and configure using a web-based interface. Software-based solutions may require more manual configuration.
Benefits:
- Resource Sharing: Print servers allow multiple users to share a single printer, reducing the need for individual printers at each workstation.
- Centralized Management: They provide a centralized point for managing print jobs, which can lead to more efficient use of printer resources.
- Cost Savings: Sharing printers through a print server can be more cost-effective than purchasing and maintaining multiple printers.
Security:
- Print servers often include security features, such as access control, to ensure that only authorized users can print to specific printers.
Operating System Compatibility:
- Print servers are designed to work with various operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Linux, and others.
Wireless Print Servers:
- Some print servers are designed specifically for wireless networks, allowing wireless devices to print to wired printers.
Vendor-specific Solutions:
- Different manufacturers offer their own print server solutions, and the features and capabilities may vary between models and brands.
Overall, print servers play a crucial role in networked environments by streamlining the printing process, improving resource utilization, and enhancing overall print management.

Question: | Is it compatible with DYMO label printers |
Answer: | Yes, I believe this will work for you. I got my ruler out & measured it & it measures 11 & 14/16ths. Just 2 ruler tick marks (my ruler is in 16ths) before 12". I hope this helps! |
Question: | has anyone had any trouble connecting to a router, and does it work great from router or does your router fry |
Answer: | I haven't run into that problem but my best guess would be that it does keep ants out. The 2 snaps hold the rim of the cover securely in a groove around the bottom & will hold even the heaviest cake, but it isn't air tight so I couldn't guarantee that the ants can't get in (but they'd have to be very tiny). |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this allow me to connect my windows10 desktop to my old hp laserjet |
Answer: | I'm using this on a network with Macs and PCs running Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6 and Windows 7 pro and Windows 10. All work fine, but getting the print server configured with a static IP address was a pain on the Macs, only due to the poor documentation, therefore some tips below. TIPS FOR CONFIGURING (MACS AND PCS) Note for the instructions below, the print server should be connected to your network and powered on. The user manual doesn’t go into enough detail on how to properly configure. The print server uses DHCP (from your router or cable modem) to assign it a network IP address. The problem with this is, that address is not fixed and can change, and then your printing stops working. So you need to configure the server to have a static (fixed) IP address. To determine what address to set it to, once you have the print server connected to your network and powered on, your router or cable modem will assign it a random IP address. You can then check your router or modem configuration to find the assigned address; somewhere in the config settings you’ll find the IP address. (If this is too technical for you, get a techie to do this.) You can change the print server config to make that IP address fixed. On a PC this is fairly easy, you just follow the instructions for setting a fixed IP address during installation, an enter the device’s current IP address. On Macs, there is no IOGear installer, so you must first configure the static IP address of the device in a browser by entering the device’s current IP address that you got from the router or modem config into a browser. That will bring up the print server’s config page. Click on the “TCP/IP” link and change the TCP/IP setting from “Automatic” to “Manual:” then you can then enter the fixed IP address. The subnet mask and gateway address should already be there, but if not, you can get it from your router or Mac OS network control panel (Apple Menu>System Preferences>Network). Click the Save button at the bottom of the screen to save the settings. Once you have the print server IP address set to fixed, you can then add the device as you would any printer via the Mac OS Printers & Scanners control panel. Go to Apple Menu>System Preferences>Printers & Scanners. Follow the instructions in the IOGear install instructions and enter the server’s fixed IP address in the “Address:” field as directed in the IOGear instructions. If you have a VPN router or modem, you may need to set port forwarding (port 631 and 9100 for this printer) to allow the printer’s data packets to travel across your network. If you have a router and don’t know what this means, get a techie to do so IF your printer doesn’t work after all other setup has been done. |
Question: | Can I run a laser off of this |
Answer: | I have these on networks with a Netgear FVS 336G router and a Cisco RV345P and they work fine. The IoGear manual is obsolete an so the instructions are fairly useless, so see my answers to other questions here for details on configuring. |

Question: | Will this work on a pixma ts |
Answer: | Providing the ipad has an appropriate app as well as the drivers for your specific printer. The IOGEAR works great, you can set a static ip address. see the following link for some additional information: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18930908#18930908 |
Question: | Will this work with a vonets wifi bridge repeater |
Answer: | Hi, This is the best print server i have seen to date. Its very easy to install and has worked non-stop for me in multiple offices for years. I can't tell you 100% that it will work as the printer you have is a new model and its not listed in the "list of verified compatible printers". I am quite sure it will work irregardless of that as the list isn't a finite list - there could be 100s of other newer printers that are not listed that work. As a comparable datum, I use it on a new Oki laser-jet printer as well as on a large Canon photo copier. Both printers weren't listed but work. I would recommend this print server. good luck. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work with chromium |
Answer: | Yes, it even works with my 20 - year old HP Officejet Pro 8600 (a larger printer for 11 x 17) and my 12 - year old Richo Afico SP C430 DN, with the transfer speed of 1 - GB/sec over Ethernet rather than by wireless which at best you might get 100 Mb/sec. However, if you do not have emergency battery backup, you may need to reinstall these (just reload the software on the server), if you have a power outage. It tends to be much more reliable with a direct Ethernet connection for print server, especially if you give all printers, desktops, laptops, etc., dedicated IP addresses. (if the DHCP connection is interrupted by a power outage, the server can lose its connection to the printer unless you reload the software, because this tells the server what this device is connected to. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work with an HP Laserjet |
Answer: | Four of the five previous responses ambiguously say “connect” without clear indication of which kind they mean (wired or wireless). So, I'll try to answer in more explicit terms. This is not a wireless device. (That is, your PC does not link to it directly via WiFi or Bluetooth.) It must be physically attached to your home or office network with an ethernet cable. Thus, it requires a local-area network (LAN). Unless you access the internet via a mobile-phone connection (or by tethering your PC to one), you probably already have such a network. Your network router (which might be built into your cable/DSL/fiber modem), or an ethernet hub connected to it, should have an available (i.e., unoccupied) ethernet port (for a "RJ-45"-style modular connector...it looks like a wide phone jack). If you have a WiFi-only router that has no ports for a wired LAN, you cannot use this print server. The connections are as follows: PC or mobile device >--WiFi (or ethernet cable)--> Network router >--ethernet cable--> Print Server >--USB cable--> LabelWriter (the label printer) The claim of providing “wireless printing” is only true if your PC or mobile already has wireless access to your network. |
Question: | Does this work with Apple computers |
Answer: | With what program did you expect to print Dymo labels from your iPhone? I'd be most interested since I've never found a way to do that to date. This print server works ONLY for the Dymo printers - and frankly, not too very well. In a small office, we wound up getting a second Dymo simply due to the unreliability and complexity of using this. |
Question: | Will this work with zebra z4mplus |

Question: | Is this compatible with Roland hybrid printers |

Answer: | Yes, as long as there is a parallel port on the printer this will work. |
Question: | I have an ml-1640 samsung printer and two windows 10 os on different laptops , is the server compatibale to work with ithis set up |
Answer: | After a quick look at the Roland website the only “hybrid” printer I see is the VersaUV LEJ-640. That printer is connected to a computer via Ethernet cable, not via parallel port. If that is the printer you are asking about, then, no this Ethernet parallel print server will not work for you. This print server is used to connect a printer with a parallel port output to a network via an ethernet cable. |

Question: | Does it work with hp smart-tank plus 651 wireless all-in-one ink-tank printer o any other multifunction printer?(can it be used for network scanning |
Answer: | Google Cloud Print service is run from a PC that has the Chrome Browser installed and has the cloud print option checked in options. I use it all the time, it will work. The service runs through your gmail account associated with a computer that is left on so that the Chrome Browser will send the print job to your printer queue. The browser does not need to be open for this service to work but you do have to have the option to run in the background checked in the browser options. |
Question: | Would this work with a dymo 4xl and a mac |
Answer: | This device plugs into an ethernet port on your router and your usb printer plugs into it. As long as the router it's plugged into is wireless also, all wired and wireless devices can locate and print from it. It works great for us. |
Question: | Does the ethernet port support the gigabit (1000mbit/s) protocol or the old 100mbit/s |
Answer: | Was not tried on the HP Laser jet 5. But for sure it wont work on the Datamax i class |
Question: | Can you plug a standard usb memory stick into it and use a network storage |
Answer: | It should, as it is a TCP/IP based interface, and it is driver independent, so you will need to setup your parallel printer with the local drivers (if needed) on your Mac, and just set the ip required for the print server to work. |

Answer: | I think you may be confused here. The Ethernet connection can hook to a Gigabit system (switch) with no issues (as that is my configuration - currently. It can also be attached to a 10/100Mb switch. However, this is a USB printer port; so I don't know why you are concerned. |
Question: | Does this support WPA2 wireless security |
Answer: | I don't know why you would want to use a Print Server as a NAS, but let me know if it works. |
Question: | Will this D-Link work on windows |
Answer: | There is no userid/password setting within the TP-Link firmware that will control printer access, If this type of control is required, then I would suggest that one consider a work group type printer that contains the appropriate access control functions, in addition to being a print server. |
Question: | can this work to connect usb drives to network |
Answer: | I am using it with Win 7 & 10 just fine. Don’t know the printer, but if it is USB it should work fine. |
