13 best powerline ethernet bridges

Powerline Ethernet bridges, also known as Powerline Network Adapters, are devices that allow you to extend your home or office network using existing electrical wiring. They are particularly useful in situations where Wi-Fi signals are weak or unreliable. Here's what you need to know about them:

**1. ** How They Work: Powerline Ethernet bridges work by using the electrical wiring in your home or office to transmit data signals. They come in pairs: one adapter connects to your router/modem and plugs into a power outlet, while the other adapter plugs into a power outlet in the room where you need a network connection. The data is transmitted through the electrical wiring, allowing you to establish a wired network connection without the need for additional Ethernet cables.

**2. ** Data Speeds: Powerline Ethernet adapters offer varying data speeds, usually measured in megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps). The actual speed you experience depends on the quality and length of your electrical wiring, as well as the distance between the adapters. Newer models support higher speeds and are often backward compatible with older, slower adapters.

**3. ** Security: Powerline networks are generally secure, as data transmission is encrypted to prevent unauthorized access. Most Powerline adapters have a button that allows you to quickly set up a secure connection between the paired devices using encryption standards like AES (Advanced Encryption Standard).

**4. ** Compatibility: Powerline adapters are usually compatible with various networking products, including computers, gaming consoles, smart TVs, and other Ethernet-enabled devices. Some adapters also come with additional features like built-in Wi-Fi, allowing you to create a Wi-Fi hotspot in the room where the adapter is installed.

**5. ** Setup and Configuration: Setting up Powerline Ethernet bridges is typically straightforward. You need to plug in the adapters, connect one to your router, and then pair the adapters to establish a network connection. Some adapters also come with software or mobile apps that allow you to monitor the network status and configure settings.

**6. ** Considerations: While Powerline adapters are convenient, the quality of the network connection can be affected by factors such as the age and condition of your electrical wiring, interference from other electronic devices, and the distance between the adapters. It's essential to test the adapters in your specific environment to ensure optimal performance.

Overall, Powerline Ethernet bridges provide a practical solution for extending your network without the hassle of running new Ethernet cables. They are particularly useful in older buildings where wireless signals struggle to penetrate thick walls or in situations where a stable wired connection is preferred.

User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone tried this setup with an extra wireless router at the end
Answer: Yes. I have a Linsys N on mine. You have to disable the DHCP on the slave router. Also you need to assign a static IP on the router. Use something like 192.168.1.250. Then only plug into the ports with the line from the wall unit and not into the internet/supply port. If you have a 4 port router with 1 internet port, you have to use one of the ports for the service so you can hook up 3 other direct connects. You then have to rename the wireless on the "slave" router to exactly match any other wireless providing service same with password. You need to make it a duplicate router. Good luck
Question: How secure this is? I assume it is not just limited to your house's internal circuit. Could it be accessed from outside the internal house circuit
Answer: These systems are hackable, but it takes a lot of work by a good hacker. Here's an excellent treatise on this subject: bentasker dot co dot uk/documentation/security/282-infiltrating-a-network-via-powerline-homeplugav-adapters As this treatise says at the end, TP-Link has released a firmware update to fix this issue, and that new items leaving the factory would not be affected. Users with affected devices can download the firmware update from tp-link dot com/en/.
Question: Can you add additional powerline devices to network
Answer: Of course you can but remember the speed its divided in the number of devices conected. your maximin badwith will allways be 500 mbps in the powerline network
Question: So this is a wifi repeater and it turns your electrical system into ethernet cable too
Answer: The TL-WPA4220 KIT allows you to expand your home's Ethernet connectivity using the existing electrical wiring within your walls, while also providing Wi-Fi signal broadcast at the Powerline Wi-Fi Adapter (TL-WPA4220) location. Simply plug the TL-PA4010 (smaller unit) into a wall outlet near your router and connect it to the router via Ethernet, then plug the TL-WPA4220 unit into a wall outlet at the desired location. Power line products in general, transmit data through the power line of your house. The power line rate is mainly decided by the quality of power line environment it’s operating in. When your power line rate is low, you may try the steps below to improve the quality of service.

Step 1:

Please check whether your powerline adapters are plugged directly into a wall outlet. If not, please move the adapters to an outlet on the wall.

Step 2:

Please check if there are electrical devices, which have a motor inside them, around the powerline adapters. Such equipment can be air-conditioners, washing-machines, electric-fans etc.. Please move such equipment to another location if possible, or move powerline adapters away from such equipment. You may also buy a surge protector and plug such equipments to its outlets to avoid any interference they may cause.

Step 3:

Please check if there are AC power adapters, such as those used for mobile phones, laptops or something else around the adapters. If the quality of AC power adapter is not good, it may cause noise on the power line circuit. Please move it to another place away from the powerline adapters.

Step 4:

Please check if the distance between the adapters is too long. In theory, the maximum distance is 300 meters. However, with interference and line quality, it will be hard to reach the full 300 meters.

User questions & answers

Question: If I buy two of these kits will I have 1 sender and three receivers or 2 pairs
Answer: Yes, It should improve your speed because connecting direct to the router that device will have bandwidth priority over any wireless device. That device is also connected to the source and isn't transfering the signal through wireless transmitter and receiver.
Question: Can someone tell me what this does
Answer: No. It is a Thunderbolt adapter (like the DisplayPort on a laptop or desktop) rather than a Lightning adapter (like an iPhone, iPad, etc.).
Question: Does this come with 2 units
Answer: 2013 MacBook Air models use Thunderbolt 1. Thunderbolt 1 and Thunderbolt 2 ports and plugs look the same (the second generation has more data throughput) and Thunderbolt 3 looks identical to USB-C. This adapter is Thunderbolt 2 — so it'll work with a Mac that has Thunderbolt 1 or 2, but not 3. Devices with Thunderbolt 1 ports cannot use the full speed of this adapter (it may or may not work at Gigabit speeds, I'm not sure) but the plug will fit and it should work just fine on the 2013 MacBook Air.
Question: Do you end up with a new network name or does it mirror your existing wi fi network (so you don't have to have devices switch networks
Answer: Yes. Thunderbolt 2 has a data throughput of 20 Gbps (Gigabits per second) and USB 3.0 has a data throughput of 5 Gbps. Thunderbolt 2 can transfer data up to four times faster — with slow Internet connections you won't notice, but this is a Gigabit ethernet adapter... so if you're using a Gigabit-speed network or close to it, there will be a difference in speed between this and a comparable product that uses USB 3.0 instead of Thunderbolt 2.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this compatible with 802.3af POE
Answer: Different technologies. Powerline works over you buildings electrical wires to transfer data. PoE uses your ethernet cable to transfer power to the device. Useful in places where there are no power outlets. With the these in mind, Comtrend runs with G.hn, which allows it to work with devices that run on electrical wire, coaxial cables, and POE. They do make PG-9172POE that is a bridge between powerline and POE
Question: Has anyone used this unit in a home built 70 to 100 years old
Answer: My house was built in 1951...not quite at the 70 year mark as you asked, but it works like a charm for me. Be sure you plug all units directly into the wall and not through a surge protector to get the best performance.
Question: Do these have to work in pairs? If I used three of these for devices, and the last connected to my switch, will that work
Answer: Two or more will work together.
Question: Do you have to be attached with a cat5 cable to the second unit or can it run through wifi
Answer: The initial setup has to have two Comtrend units. One is plugged into a household electrical outlet and a PC by Ethernet cabler, the second plugged into an electrical outlet and to the router or switch by ethernet cable. So the answer is yes.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I have to connect second device through ethernet cable? Or can it be used as signal booster for all other wifi devices in that area
Answer: Keep in mind, the video on a product page misleads customers! You can't buy WiFi PL extender PLW1010 as they say in Video. If you buy two kits, you'll have - one powerline LAN distributor (non-wifi) - two WiFi extenders (each: PL receiver + Wifi broadcasting + 1 Ethernet Port) - one powerline receiver (non-wifi) you can plug to the power outlet and use as single Ethernet port
Question: Can the newer bv-5100 work with existing connections that use the bv-210 and bv
Answer: Depends on which version you refer to. The PLW1010 has WiFi capability, the PL1010 does not. They both have an ethernet port. The base unit is located near your router - use ethernet to connect the base unit to your router to get the best throughput from your router and into the house wiring. Plug it into an Electrical outlet and it sends your LAN signal through your house wiring to be picked up by the remote unit(s) plugged into wiring elsewhere in the house. The remote unit has an Ethernet port, so you can attach a Smart TV, BluRay, Game Console, whatever, to the ethernet and get pretty good network response (probably not gigabit, but pretty good anyway). With the Wifi Version (the PLW1010) the remote unit ALSO transmits WiFi signal. I have not purchased this WiFi product yet, I have a ethernet only version right now and looking at this to expand my iPhone/tablet Wifi signal in remote parts of the house). As such, I have an older house and the electrical wiring is sketchy and is rather noisy and fluctuates, but this technology seems to work nonetheless even on the other side of the house, I even have had the base unit plugged into an extension cord and it still works. So bottom line, this will extend your LAN signal to another room of the house via ethernet, and the WiFi version also creates a WiFi Access Point in that remote room. From what others say here, that Wifi is an extension of your router WiFi in SSID/pw. I hope this answers your question.
Question: I have several brite-view units both bvp-5100 and bv-210 bridges. can't connect now that i bought a new router. can not reach them for help
Answer: Comes with 2 units. I was able to get a POE switch to work as well (get an unmanaged one for less complicated setup), and I added in multiple POE Cameras to it. Works great!
Question: Can they be connected to an extension cable that has multiple outlets? Do they have to be connected directly to a wall outlet
Answer: Most of the answers here are giving you bits and pieces. Here's the scoop from a long time network engineer and administrator. (BTW, I'm here because I'm buying another one for another client.) 1. The wired devices in this listing act as if you had a long Ethernet cable. It's transparent. Its a work of art. Much better than any mesh system 2. As far as the wireless, there are two options - The thing to remember is most devices (computers phones, tablets are fairly single minded when it comes to finding a better signal so if they can see the current access point at all they will hang on for dear life. You can turn off the wifi on the device and turn it back on and that will help it to reanalyze the situation. Business systems which have many of these monitor where devices are and will automatically kick a device off of one, forcing it to reanalyze the situation. a. Use the default setup - some people like this because then they can tell which antenna (access point) their device is connected. b. Duplicate the existing wifi network - This can be done using the WPS setup or manually. I like doing it manually so I can configure the whole setup (channel, channel width, security level, etc.) For the most part the handoff should work seamlessly however there may be times where certain devices (usually older ones) will refuse to change or take a while to make the switch. For most of my clients when I have to setup one of these, I duplicate the existing network to make it easier on them. I have yet to hear of any complaints. Two more details. For best performance of any of these devices 1. It MUST be plugged into the wall outlet, no power taps or surge protectors. They have filters which choke the communication 2. These normally wont work across a meter - in other words, you probably cant use it to share internet with your next door neighbor. There are a few instances where it works but they are few.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with 5G
Answer: Ethernet is the fastest data transmission you can get. If you are really getting 5G transmission speeds it should work just fine. The limit is more a function of your modems Ethernet conversion speed and you house/apartment wiring. I get 49.2Mbps in a 40 year old house with Comcast (per Speed Test Spectrum). Your 5G connection should work just fine. Almost all cable WiFi’s are horrible so you almost can’t go wrong.
Question: If you have multiple devices in a room do you need more than one of these to be wired directly to each device? Or just one devices will pick up signal
Answer: No depending on what type pass-through you have I might have to ethernet plugs on the bottom and you can and whatever you can get off at two ethernet plugs you can plug it into a box into a splitter and dip it out that way how you get quite a bit out of to two plugs
Question: Is this listing for a single unit or a package of two
Answer: Generally it's a 2 package set
Question: will this work with older 2 wire house wiring
Answer: I have used it in a 3-to-2-prong adapter and the signal does get transmitted. I noticed no reduction in speed. However, with the models that have a pass-through electrical plug, allowing you to plug a device into the unit so, its ground plug will not, of course, be grounded, so be aware of that.

User questions & answers

Question: I already have moca built in, can I use each of these in other rooms to bring high speed data to them instead of using one to connect the router
Answer: MoCA acts like an ethernet bridge, meaning it "converts" Ethernet to coax and back again, so that devices connected appear to do so over Ethernet (except for delay differences). If you have MoCA in your house, and it uses the LAN channels (not WAN), and uses no privacy, then this device can connect to that and appear to be part of the same network. For example, for those with Verizon FiOS, they have two MoCA channels; one WAN (C4 - ONT to the router) and one LAN channel (D-channel). The WAN channel has privacy enabled, and most commercially-available devices won't communicate on that WAN channel. However, the LAN channel has privacy disabled, and most commercially-available devices will communicate on that channel. The router actually has two MoCA transfceivers (one for WAN, one for LAN). If you have a MoCA device that already communicates over LAN (i.e., Tivo box), then it can connect to the router, and likewise, you can use one of these devices (Actiontec) to join to the MoCA network to provide Ethernet to another room. The limit for MoCA 1.1 is 16 devices, AFAIK, but this is a MoCA 2.0 device and I can't recall that device limit, but it has to be at least 16 devices. Note that the router serves as a device, and is most likely the NC (Network Coordinator), depending on your coax topology and best signal device.
Question: Do any of these adapters allow input via Ethernet? All diagrams appear that input is via Coax only. My modem and current wiring is ethernet only
Answer: I guess it depends on how you're defining "input". The idea is that you're converting RJ-45 to Coax, connecting via Coax then converting back to RJ-45. So if your Modem is Ethernet (RJ-45) and you connect that to the Actiontec and connect the Actiontec to Coax then at some other point in your Coax wiring, you connect the other Actiontec and connect its RJ-45 to something (let's say a network switch with a couple of computers on it) then those devices can talk Ethernet to your modem via the Coax wiring by virtue of the Actiontec converting RJ-45 to Coax back to RJ-45. Does that help?
Question: What comes in the box
Answer: Two Ethernet to coax adapter boxes, two Ethernet cables, two short coax cables with female connectors and a coax splitter.
Question: What does "requires that your router support bonded moca 2.0" mean? can't i just use ethernet to ethernet via coax and get full speed bridging
Answer: That statement was not in my review but I will answer it for you. These devices can be used two ways. If your router has a COAX port for HPNA MoCA 2.0 rated you connect that to your CATV cable and use them for an Ethernet connection for devices at the other end. Or use one to connect to your router at an Ethernet LAN port or use the WAN port if available and connect to your CATV COAX. Then use the other off the COAX at the other end for Ethernet to a device such as a PC, Router, Switch, etc. Or if you have a MoCA 2.0 enabled network range extender like the Actiontec ECB6200 Bonded MoCA 2.0 Network Adapter, it will connect direct off the COAX cable. So yes if you use two as you suggest you will get full speed bridging. MoCA 2.0 offers 400 Mb/sec to 800 Mb/sec actual depending on whether they use channel bonding. I got 640 Mb/sec actual and stable on mine over the CATV COAX. My CATV setup in my house is in the home run configuration. Make sure all your splitters in your home are MoCA 2.0 rated for 5-1675 MHz frequency for best results and include an MPOE filter at the CATV providers input to keep your network signal from exiting your home. I hope this helps you.

  • MoCA 2.5 can offer extremely high bandwidth of 2.5 Gbps. This bandwidth are shared by all the devices. That’s enough to allow streaming 4K/8K videos at the same time, while still playing an online game and transferring pictures from a computer or a mobile device to a television for viewing.
  • Please buy at least two devices to enjoy the high speed MoCA 2.5. They can be connected to a variety of devices in the home. Maximum 16 devices in every home network.
  • Since the wiring is already in existence, the only thing that is required is to attach MoCA devices at either end. Plug and Play.
  • Unlike Wi-Fi, MoCA is based on coaxial cable, a shielded metal wire. That can minimize the external interference. Also the attenuation of the cable is very small, less than 8dB per 100 feet. Even with a 60dB path loss, you still can get a full-speed connection. It is almost comparable to Ethernet.
  • Improve online gaming by lower latency. Latency is the quality of your network, it is the term used to indicate any kind of delay that happens in data communication over a network. When play games online, latency is critical. The lower latency, the better gaming experience. MoCA 2.5 can achieve 3ms delay. For Wi-Fi, the value is variable, from milliseconds to tens of milliseconds.

User questions & answers

Question: What's the maximum length this product can transmit over coaxial? Trying to push an internet signal about 500 ft and have around 50/mbps speed
Answer: This device has nothing to do with wifi. This uses your home's electrical wiring to provide a wired Ethernet connection to somewhere else in your home.
Question: Does the ethernet port support Power over Ethernet
Answer: I am not familiar with the BV-210 and BV-254, but they are both powerline ethernet adapter, so I guess the BV5100 should work the same as 210 and 254.
Question: Would this be compatible in an existing coaxial network using actiontec ecb6200k02 adapters
Answer: They operate independently of the router. I would try re-pairing the devices, but it's more likely an issue with the end device not talking to the router. I would check your network settings to make sure you're using the right gateway.
Question: Can you just connect the adapter's ethernet port to an existing router and use a standalone coax cable to extend the connection to another room
Answer: It is highly recommended that all power network adapters be plugged directly into the wall. If I was to try an extension cord with this I would use a heavy duty one (like you use outside) with only the power network adapter on it.

MoCA 2.5

MoCA is an open industry standards consortium. Products with MoCA technology are so popular, including MoCA adapter, home gateway with built-in MoCA, MoCA + WiFi extender, STB with MoCA and so on.

MoCA technology provides the bandwidth reliability for in-home backbones and multi-room content sharing. Every house with coax becomes a connected home and the foundation for a better wireless experience.

MoCA technology provides the high performance, low latency and security necessary for a reliable home network and using the existing coaxial cabling.

MoCA 2.5 is capable of 2.5 Gbps actual data rates and is the ideal backbone for Wi-Fi connectivity.

EASY SETUP

Since the wiring is already in existence, the only thing that is required is to attach MoCA devices at either end. Plug and Play. These devices normally are sold in pairs, so that they can be connected to a variety of devices in the home. Maximum 16 devices in every home network.

ULTRA FAST

MoCA 2.5 can offer extremely high bandwidth of 2.5 Gbps. This bandwidth are shared by all the devices. That’s enough to allow streaming 4K/8K videos at the same time, while still playing an online game and transferring pictures from a computer or a mobile device to a television for viewing.

HIGH RELIABILITY

Unlike Wi-Fi, MoCA is based on coaxial cable, a shielded metal wire. That can minimize the external interference. Also the attenuation of the cable is very small, less than 8dB per 100 feet. Even with a 60dB path loss, you still can get a full-speed connection. It is almost comparable to Ethernet

Cable ISP, the upper frequency of cable modem is 1002MHz.

We know many customers are using cable ISP, such as Comcast, Spectrum, Cox and others. Because the cable Internet(DOCSIS3.0 or DOCSIS3.1) will share the same coaxial network with MoCA, so the most important part, please double check the upper frequency of your cable modem. Make sure the upper frequency is 1002MHz. MoCA is using 1125-1675MHz. They can work together.

For the cable modem/router that has upper frequency 1218MHz, you need to install two PoE filters.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a gbox in my room have a problem with distance, gbox keep buffering will this fix that problem
Answer: What kind of coaxial cable are you using? Is there a splitter between the two MoCA adapters? The suggested attenuation between our device is less than 55 dB. For RG-6 cable, the attenuation of 500 ft should be about 40 dB, our device should can work normally.
Question: Is it okey/compatible to use 4 (2 downstairs and 2 upstairs setup) ZyXEL 600 Mbps Mini Powerline AV
Answer: No.
Question: my concern is will this adapter work on all the wires in the home even when my bedroom and living room are on different circuit breakers
Answer: MoCa has multiple channels. So while this adapter will run 2.5 to any other 2.5 device, if you hook an older 2.0 device on the other end, you will only get 2.0 speeds to that device behind the 2.0 adapter. So lets say for example, you plug this 2.5 adapter into your router, port 4, then into the coax. Then in another room, you plug in a 2.0 adapter into the wall, which then goes to your PC. You will only get 2.0 speeds. IF you have multiple devices, each devices gets its rated speed. For example, if you have the 2.5 adapter at the router, room A has a 2.5 adapter and room B has a 2.0 adapter, the PC in room A will get the full 2.5 speeds, while room B will be stuck on 2.0 speeds. MIND YOU, speeds are rated as max throughput. which is why version 2.5 is such a huge deal. I currently run 2.0 bonded, which is rated for 1000mbps.... but I don't ever get that. Technically 1000 for up/down would see something like 500/500 max speeds. moca 2.0 NOT bonded, is rated 500, which equates to about 250/250 max speeds. Now if you are not doing up/down at the same time, you might see max speeds. I have yet to on bonded 2.0, which Is why soon I will be buying these 2.5 adapters, as I have 1000/1000 verizon fios internet. Don't let people say that the main moca box will downlink to the slowest adapter connector. This is incorrect, if this were true I would only get moca 1.1 speeds because of the Verizon set top boxes which utilize MoCa for on demand and tv guide, and yet I get 600/600 via 2.0 bonded adapters (motorola) on my PC in the living room.... MoCa has multiple lanes, and each link will get its own speed via its own lane, and since all newer verzions of moca are backwards compatible, each lane can run its rated speeds.
Question: What is pass through meaning ? Not sure i need to buy pass through or non-pass through product
Answer: Sure. This is the standard way to use MoCA. You can connected the MoCA adapter to your router with ethernet cable. Then connect it to the RF outlet on the wall. In another room, you can connect another MoCA adapter to the RF outlet on the wall, and connect the adapter to PC/Wi-Fi AP/STB and so on.

User questions & answers

Question: What extra things do I need for this to work in my home? Ethernet cable
Answer: Probably. I had the same problem with Netflix and this corrected it. No more lag because you're hard wired to your Internet signal verses WiFi.
Question: Do these only work in pairs or can you purchase a 3rd gpl-2000wac for another location and have it use the main adapter
Answer: Yes of course, but having said that. Its not upstairs & downstairs, the signal is superimposed on the 120v line in your home. There are 2 120v lines coming in your house to make 220v for some appliances, if you have to cross from 1 120v side to the other 120v side you occasionally have problems.
Question: Does the smaller one have to remain connected to the router or can I move it to another room after initial set up
Answer: It is not about circuit breakers but about phases. They will not work across phases. If you house has only 1 phase, then no issue. If you have 2 phases, they need to be on the same phase. If you have a 220v outlet (e.g dryer) then you have 2 phases.
Question: The headline says this is a 2-unit kit, but the description says it is only one unit and you need a kit. Which is correct
Answer: the Pass through option gives you the outlet plug on the product. It's completely up to you but, i would recommend it because it uses one outlet and partially blocks the other one (my surge protector couldn't fit so i have it plugged into the powerline adapter)

User questions & answers

Question: hi. Does this include 1 device or 2 ? Do they come in pairs
Answer: Yes, but it comes with one supplied, though it might be too short (4 feet).
Question: Can I use this to connect my router to a printer located in another room
Answer: Yes, you can connect several as long as they are all connected to the same electric circuit.
Question: How do you pair these units? I plugged one unit in the wall and connected it to the modem and plugged another unit in a different outlet but nothing
Answer: There are two units which are about the same size. The "base" is the 4 light one, slightly smaller, and yes, it does need to remain connected to the router. That's how the G.hn Powerline works - the router connects to that base via a regular ethernet cable and then the base communicates with the wireless bridge (or any other G.hn unit) via your AC electrical system. The wireless bridge can be moved around. Hope this helps.
Question: do I have to unplug all surge protectors in house
Answer: This is the kit with two units.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a 2nd electric service in my garage/shop 35' from house where my router is plugged in, would I have to run a wire/extension cord to my garage
Answer: If both panels are serviced by the same electric supply on your side of the transformer, they're all connected and the limiting factor will be any distance limitations. This is why HomePlug is not recommended for apartments because the separate meters are serviced from the same transformer.
Question: Can I use the Ethernet cable on the second device to plug a wireless access point into
Answer: The second device IS a wireless access point... no need to plug in an addition wireless access point!
Question: I have 2 different electric panel boxes, one for each end of the house, how can I make this work
Answer: Mine was same way. I used one in the house and one in the garage w a different panel box and it worked perfectly. I had my doubts but it has great signal.
Question: I have a chromebook and an android phone. how do i connect it to my netgear router
Answer: Just as you would connect to the existing router.
