User questions & answers
Question: | How warm does this modem run? Some of the more recent SB modems ran too hot, leading to early failure |
Answer: | Handling of heat was definitely considered in the MB7420 design. All cable modems generate heat, the good designs get rid of the heat efficiently. The MB7420 is very well ventilated on both sides and on the top, and has robust heat sinks on the circuit board to dissipate the heat. The vertical design also helps air circulation. The two year warranty is the longest in the industry and speaks to the durability of the product. With that said, definitely do not operate the MB7420 on its side. The MB7420 is intended to be in a vertical position. |
Question: | Are the leds insanely bright like on other motorola modems |
Answer: | Whether the LEDs have the right amount of brightness is an opinion. The MB7420 LED brightness was reduced in response to user reviews on earlier modem designs. Definitely attention was paid to the output level and the electronic design throttled back the brightness. You will probably find it a good, but can't say for sure. Your opinion would be welcome. |
Question: | Can the stabilizing foot be removed so the modem can lay on its side? Is it screwed/clipped on |
Answer: | The foot is attached with 2 screws under the label. It is designed to stand up on the foot to allow for adequate cooling for the modem at high speeds. It is not designed to lay flat on its side with one panel blocked. It is recommended that both side panels and the top not be blocked. Laying it on its side and blocking the ventilation could produce improper operation and unit failure. |
Question: | Is this part of the arris motorola surfboard line up of modems |
Answer: | No, it is not. This is a much newer design. The MB7420 has a Full Band Capture Digital Tuner, upgraded power handling to protect against lightning and power surges, robust heat sinks to handle a broad temperature range. And the MB7420 looks a lot better than the Arris SB6141. |

Footnotes
*100/250 Mbps represent the advertised throughput you can achieve with the Internet plan provided by your cable service provider. Actual throughput may be lower than 100/250 Mbps, as this throughput is dependent on your contract with your cable service provider.
**960 Mbps based on DOCSIS 3.0 throughput. Maximum speed varies depending on the service provided by the cable operator. IPv6 availability is dependent upon your ISP or service provider providing IPv6 capability.
Speed references are provided, marketed, and sold by your broadband service provider and not Linksys. Actual performance, including network speed and data throughput rate, may vary. Performance depends upon many factors, conditions, and variables, including products used, number of users accessing the Internet, type of traffic generated by each user (interactive browsing versus video streaming), interference, and other adverse conditions. Actual data throughput will be lower than that indicated and may depend on the mix of products used and external factors.

The Zoom Model 5345 is a 343 Mbps cable modem certified for money-saving own-your-own cable modem programs by Comcast XFINITY, Time Warner Cable, and other leading cable service providers. Charter Spectrum approved. Owning a certified own-your-own modem eliminates modem rental charges that are typically $8 to $10 dollars per month. The Model 5345 Gigabit (10-100-1000 Mbps) Ethernet port connects to your Windows or Macintosh computer, router, wireless access point, HomePlug adapter, or other Ethernet-enabled device. When used with a router, the high speed Internet service can be shared with multiple devices. The number of channels supported by a cable modem is the primary indicator of a modem's top speed. This modem is 8x4, which supports eight channels for downloads, and four channels for uploads. Eight channels for data downloads make this modem up to twice as fast as competing modems that support only four channels. Because this 8x4 modem uses the cable network more efficiently, average download speeds can be faster, even for service speeds below the modem's top speed of 343 Mbps. A Full-Band Capture Digital Tuner lets service providers deliver faster, more reliable Internet. The 5345 is certified by CableLabs to support the latest DOCSIS 3.0 standard plus DOCSIS 2.0 and 1.1 for use with older cable systems. IPv6 and IPv4 are supported for powerful, flexible network addressing. With its easy installation, high speed, compact size, and extensively tested compatibility, the Model 5345 is the perfect choice for almost any cable modem user. The Model 5345 has been tested and certified by CableLabs to work with nearly all U.S. cable services. The Zoom 5345 is covered by a two year warranty and quality technical support by Zoom Telephonics, a Boston based company founded in 1977.

User questions & answers
Question: | can i track individual device' data usage? i bought it for this reason but i dont see that option in the app or webpage |
Answer: | You can, you have to log into the 192.168.1.1 and sign in. It is under WiFi usage. |
Question: | How do we set this up to use instead of the Comcast modem rental? The Comcast customer service rep said he doesn't believe it's compatible |
Answer: | You will need the MAC address for the device ready to go before you call your cable provider. After you plug it in and hook it up to your internet feed from your provider and power it on, call their help desk and tell them you have a new cable modem and need this device (MAC) it to be set up under your account. You provide them the MAC address and they should be able to see your device on their network. Once they get it set up, you can connect your WIFI router to the cable modem and they should be able to see the WIFI router connected to your new cable modem. Enjoy saving $ by not renting a cable modem from the provider. |
Question: | if i already have a modem installed, would i just have to unplug that modem and plug this one in to work or would i have to contact my ISP |
Answer: | It is a simple swap, however you do have to contact your ISP to activate it. It's actually one of the easiest things to do with my cable company and you might actually be able to do it online from a smartphone via the ISP's website. |
Question: | Can this router handle gigabyte internet service |
Answer: | No. NO. Nooooooooooo! I will try to submit a picture with speed trials but in short- it is a complete lie and false advertising to state openly or even imply that this can handle 1 Gig speeds. Directly connected with a 6ft Ethernet cable I cap out at around 576 Mbps (roughly half of a Gig service) but when I swap to Wifi it drops by an order of magnitude to ~ 50 Mbps or 1/20th of a Gig service. Xfinity technicians came out 3 separate times and verified that we are getting 1 Gig speeds but I was told that you need DOCSIS 3.1 to handle 1 Gig service. Really regretting paying so much for this junk. It looks sharp, I will say that but for two people trying to teach via Zoom this device can't handle it. Loses connection and/or poor service DAILY! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I connect it to my computer for Ethernet connection |
Answer: | yes. It can if you have Internet service as part of your cable package |
Question: | Does this work with RCN cable/internet service |
Answer: | Only RCN can answer that question. I can say that this modem will handle at lease 110 Mbps because that was what I had. It did not handle 300Mbps. The modem worked perfectly and was very reliable. |
Question: | What kind of router is best to use with this modem |
Answer: | That is a very hard question to answer in a limited amount of space. First, think about getting the Model MG7310, which incorporates an N300 wireless router. You will probably save some money and you will reduce cable clutter, increase reliability (wiring connections are a frequent source of trouble) and save desk space by incorporating both modem and router in a single device. If the MG7310 won't work for you, here are some very general rules, but the choice of a router is definitely an individual decision that has to factor in price and performance. If you are in a dense setting like a high rise building or a dense condo or apartment complex, get a dual band wireless that has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHZ frequency support. But that assumes your connecting devices like phones and computers support 5 GHz. If you live in a very large house, or a house with masonry walls rather than sheetrock, you will want WDS support in case you need to use a range extender. With that said, if you have a 50 Mbps cable service or slower, an N300 router will probably meet your needs and save you some money. Much more could be written on this topic, a search of the Internet should provide additional information. |
Question: | Do I need to contact my cable provider that I am changing my previse cable modem for this one, or will it work out of the box |
Answer: | Short version: Use your provider's self registration website, or whichever of their customer service methods work best for you. Long version: The cable modem will go online once powered and connected to a coaxial cable with good signal parameters. You still need service authorization from the cable modem termination system. Some cable internet service providers have self registration websites. Connect the coaxial cable to the modem, an ethernet cable to a computer, and connect the power cord to an outlet. This may also work over a wireless router and with wireless devices, but just using a computer can help isolate any setup issues. When your modem first goes online, the CMTS may recognize a foreign modem and direct your web browser to the registration website. If not, the registration website can be manually searched for, which is where a secondary internet connection of some sort can come in handy. If you have your account information already, the only other thing you may need to add is the CMAC, or Cable modem Media Access Control address. Some registration systems can detect this automatically. This is the number that distinguishes your modem from all of the others, and should be on the modem if not also on a label in the box. At the end of the process, the modem will probably restart on command of the CMTS. Once it is back online, test your internet connection. You may need to power cycle the modem (unplug it and plug it back in) or reset it (hold the reset button for long enough) before using it with other equipment, most commonly a wireless router. This particular product is just a modem, so if you previously used the wireless network coming out of the cable company's equipment, you would also need your own wireless router or other networking equipment. This whole process can often be done ahead of time and the new modem plugged in later, but be advised that the previous modem (if it is still online) will lose its service. Also be aware that if the wiring leading to an old modem has issues, changing modems will not fix the real issue and is not likely to make the service any better. |

Question: | Does this device serve as a MoCA adapter and/or MoCA router? I assume I purchase additional MoCA adapters for other areas of the home |
Answer: | No it will not work with Comcast Triple play with phone, for that I would recommend ARRIS DOCSIS 3.0 Residential Gateway with 802.11n/ 4 GigaPort Router/ 2-Voice Lines for Comcast (TG862G-CT). But one thing is that it is only a n wireless. Now you could get Arris Tm722g Cable Modem Docsis 3.0 and add a wireless AC router. I did try Arris SBG6782-ac, but I had issue with moca connection and returned it. Now I have an ARRIS SURFboard SB6183 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem with a Cisco wireless ac router and hooked up my TIVO mini via Ethernet. Works great and I would recommend TIVO over Comcast X1 DVR. I love the option to be able to skip commercials on most recorded shows. Also love the 4 tuner and access to apps like Netflix, Amazon video, Hulu, YouTube, Comcast Ondemand. Also with TIVO I can created a season pass including both live TV recording and streaming via apps. |
Question: | Does this 6782 have a stronger wifi signal than the |
Answer: | Comcast uses ARRIS modems. the SBG6782 is 100% better then the one you get from Comcast. Now they say new customers get this model. |
Question: | Does this work with xfinity triple play package? Comcast says I can't buy one if I have the package |

Question: | Why would I spend the money on this newer model Motorola Surfboard Gateway over the SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 model? Reading the specs, it seems similar |
Answer: | No - the TC-W7960 is an Internet Cable Modem Router unit, and is not designed for landline phone connectivity. The ports in the back of the TC-W7960 are for Ethernet only. Regards, TP-Link Support |

User questions & answers
Question: | Tried to register this with cox (the linksys cm3024) and it would not work. could not be seen on their end with serial# and mac. any suggestions |
Answer: | I'm not familiar with how that "phone" works BUT as per the product description, this is a cable modem for data. There is no port for voice or telephone. |
Question: | Can I connect a phone to this modem |
Answer: | Hi, jacob h. We'd like to have our Level 2 team look into this. Please send us an email at [email protected] and we'll take it from there. |
Question: | Is this at&t compatible |
Answer: | Yes it works with COX, but not very well. As mentioned else where, the modem gets very hot and is not reliable. I have seen my upstream range from 26 dBmV to 57 dBmV. If there is a FSRA50-12 on your line you can probably rest assure you will max out power wise and the modem will reset. I do not recommend this modem. |
Question: | does it run at up to 960mbps or 300 mbps because the title says 960 but the details say |
Answer: | I don't believe the issues you brought up are resolved. I just purchased this cable modem a few weeks ago and yes it is very hot and I have to keep powering it on/off daily to get the connection to re-establish. Comcast confirmed the signal was strong and consistent so I believe the modem is the problem. I'll be replacing it soon. I definitely wouldn't recommend it. |
