12 best gigabit modems

Gigabit modems, also known as Gigabit Cable Modems or DOCSIS 3.1 modems, are networking devices used to connect your home or business to the internet via cable broadband. They are designed to provide high-speed internet access, typically with data transfer rates of up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps). Here's what you need to know about them:

  1. High-Speed Internet: Gigabit modems are capable of delivering internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps, which is significantly faster than older modem models. This makes them ideal for households or businesses with heavy internet usage, including online gaming, streaming 4K or 8K content, and multiple users or devices.

  2. DOCSIS 3.1 Standard: Most gigabit modems adhere to the DOCSIS 3.1 (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) standard. DOCSIS 3.1 is a set of specifications that allow cable providers to offer faster internet speeds over their existing infrastructure.

  3. Compatibility: To use a gigabit modem, you need to ensure that your internet service provider (ISP) supports DOCSIS 3.1 and offers gigabit internet plans. Additionally, make sure that the modem is compatible with your specific ISP, as different providers may have specific modem requirements.

  4. Router Integration: Gigabit modems typically do not have built-in Wi-Fi capabilities. To create a complete home network, you will need to connect the modem to a compatible router or a Wi-Fi access point. This router will handle Wi-Fi distribution and network management.

  5. Ethernet Ports: Gigabit modems usually come with one or more Gigabit Ethernet ports. These ports can be used to directly connect wired devices such as computers, gaming consoles, or smart TVs for the best possible performance.

  6. DOCSIS 3.1 vs. DOCSIS 3.0: It's important to note that DOCSIS 3.1 modems are backward compatible with the previous DOCSIS 3.0 standard. However, if you want to maximize the benefits of gigabit internet, it's recommended to use a DOCSIS 3.1 modem with a compatible DOCSIS 3.1 router.

  7. ISP Rental vs. Buying: Many ISPs offer modem rental services, but buying your own gigabit modem can often be a cost-effective option in the long run. It can save you on monthly rental fees, and you have more control over your networking equipment.

  8. Security and Firmware Updates: Like any networking device, it's essential to keep your gigabit modem's firmware up to date to ensure it remains secure and performs optimally.Check for firmware updates regularly and follow your modem manufacturer's instructions for updates.

  9. Customer Support: If you experience any issues with your gigabit modem or need assistance with setup, contact your ISP's customer support or the modem manufacturer's support team for guidance and troubleshooting.

Gigabit modems play a crucial role in providing high-speed internet access to homes and businesses. When choosing one, consider your specific internet needs, compatibility with your ISP, and whether you also need a router to create a complete home network.

User questions & answers

Question: How is this model different than the arris surfboard sb
Answer: The sb6121 only has speeds of 172 Mbps download and up to 131 Mbps upload. This model has up to 343 Mbps download and 131 Mbps upload.
Question: Going with the cable modem option what’s the best router to pair this with for spectrum
Answer: It depends on your needs. Needs are based on the number of devices connected and the size of area you are trying to cover. I would highly recommend a mesh network unless your home is 1200sqft or smaller. A centrally located router could cover that. The biggest problem is getting the 5ghz frequency to reach throughout the home. The 5ghz gives you speeds over 30mbps on wireless devices. 5ghz will reach roughly 40ft in all directions from your access point (ap). A mesh system gives you multiple ap and thus more area covered by the 5ghz.
Question: How many devices can connect at once? Is that that the 8x refers to
Answer: The 8x doesn't refer to the number of devices you can connect to it. You only want to connect one device and that's your WiFi router. You wireless router determines how many devices can be connect based on the available number of ip addresses on the wireless device. The 8x refers to the speed of Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). Its informing you on the speed of DOCSIS 2.0 vs the newer DOCSIS 3.0. Ultimately your speed will be determined by how much you want to pay your internet provider. And you can determine how many devices you want to connect by the router you choose.
Question: Do I also have to buy a router for the modem? And to make sure it obviously speeds up internet connection right
Answer: If you only need to have one computer hooked up to the internet you do not need a router. If you want to hook up more than one computer or if you want a wireless network, you will need to buy the appropriate router. My internet speed went from 20mb to 100mb(the speed I pay extra for). TWC has also stopped charging me $8.00 a month for the use of their inadequate equipment.

User questions & answers

Question: Why does it say 4x ethernet ports in your description where there is only one
Answer: Because Amazon hasn't corrected their product subscription. I submitted one two weeks ago and has yet to be done. If you need more than 1 ethernet port, then this one is not for you. This has only (1) 2.5 Multi-Gig port.
Question: Does netgear cm500-1aznas work with tds provider
Answer: Yes. But you need to call the TDS customer service and provide your CMAC or SN to register your device. These numbers are on the box and the unit
Question: Can you use a phone to ethernet splitter for voice to work
Answer: I have never heard of a phone to internet splitter, at least not expressed in those terms. However, for VOIP (which means Voice Over Internet Protocall), you must have at least one phone jack in a modem, or a modem-router combination. Some modems have two such jacks, which could provide two different "lines." Most importantly, you must have your internet service provider's PERMISSION to install and use such a modem, or modem-router combination! My own ISP (Wow, aka Wowway.com) REFUSED to give such permission because that would cut into their profits, since they would no longer receive a monthly FEE to RENT their age-old junk, much of which are at least five years old, which is like a millenia in this day of super-fast-paced electronic offerings. I had to send back every VOIP-capable modem I bought from Amazon and other places because my ISP REFUSED to enable them to work with their so-called service(s). Talk about anti-competitive business practices ... U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), are you paying any attention?
Question: I understand that this modem says it will only work with xfinity. but has anyone tried this with spectrum? (aka time warner cable
Answer: Hello. I am writing this Dec 2, 2020 and just activated this modem 2 days ago with Spectrum. It is not on the list of approved modems, but oddly enough the CM400 is. I just told the tech support who activated it that it was compatible and it's worked fine with no problems. I went from 100-120 mbs on my 100 mb plan to 250 to 450 mbs, still on the 100 mb plan. This modem is not on the list of approved models but it seems to work fine so far without periodic latency/drops like the Arris model from Spectrum had.

User questions & answers

Question: Confirming that only one device can be connected to the modem, despite additional lan ports? you can't connect, say your pc and a router at same time
Answer: The MB8600 will allow for one device. You can connect your PC to the MB8600, or connect a router to the MB8600.If, in the very unusual situation, you are paying for and receiving more than one IP address from your provider, then you can directly connect up to 4 devices to the MB8600.
Question: I also need wifi, what do you recommend
Answer: The MB8600 modem will work with any WiFi router. Given the speed of the MB8600, you should be using at least an AC1900 router and given the other devices in your network, you might be able to take advantage of a wireless speed even faster than AC1900.The Ethernet port on the MB8600 simply plugs into the WiFi router of your choice. The router should be current enough to have a Gigabit WAN port (10/100/1000 Ethernet port), since you will need that for the speeds that the MB8600 can deliver. And for now, 1 Gbps service is the fastest cable service Comcast is providing in the US. When Comcast or other cable Internet service providers begin providing service speeds over 1Gbps, the MB8600 has the bonded Ethernet ports which will allow the MB8600 to deliver speeds above 1 Gbps. We are not aware of a consumer-home/small office router that does Ethernet port bonding today, but they are coming. Ethernet port bonding is available on Enterprise level routers (routers used in large organizations), but we can't recommend that class of product for a consumer at this point. They are more complicated than you need and more expensive. Bonded Ethernet ports for consumers will appear by the time Comcast is ready to begin delivering speeds above 1Gbps and the MB8600 will be ready to deliver those speeds. In summary: Use at least an AC1900 wireless router Be sure the router you choose has a Gigabit Ethernet WAN port.
Question: Does this use the now-notorious Intel Puma 6 chipset
Answer: Model MB8600 and all Motorola products use Broadcom chipsets and do not have the problem associated with the Puma 6 chipset.
Question: Do all four Ethernet ports on this modem output the same amount of bandwidth or are there only certain ports that operate at maximum capacity
Answer: The reason for four ports on a modem requires some explanation. It is important to understand the MB8600 does not do routing. The MB8600 is a modem only. A router can be connected to any of the MB8600 GigE ports. The link between the router and the modem is then capable of using the full rate of the one Gbps service Comcast currently can provide with their new DOCSIS 3.1 service. In the future, Comcast and other cable services are expected to offer services faster than on 1 Gbps. When those faster services are offered, the additional ports in the MB8600 will be needed. Ports 1 and 2 can be bonded to allow up to 2 Gbps to be delivered by the MB8600. The other two ports on the MB8600 are there to allow additional port bonding for speeds over 2 Gbps. When Comcast has service speeds over 1 Gbps, the router connected to the MB8600 also needs to do port bonding to take advantage of the port bonding in the MB8600. Routers used by consumers today do not support port bonding. Some routers used in corporate networks do support port bonding. In the future, routers used in homes and small businesses will be sold that support port bonding so they can take advantage of future service speeds that will be faster than 1Gbps. In summary, the four ports on the MB8600 are there to allow the MB8600 to deliver service speeds above 1 Gbps WHEN THOSE SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE. That is good design. Think twice before you buy a modem that pretends to offer speeds above 1Gbps and does not have multiple ports that can be bonded. You can not get a speed above 1 Gbps unless you have a way to get the fast speed out of the modem. The MB8600 is designed to allow speeds above 1 Gbps to be delivered to a router with bonded GigE ports. Other modems are not as well designed.

Answer: This device is not listed on Suddenlink's website as an approved device with its service. Please call them to verify the compatibility
Question: Does this router allow for remote managment

Question: Currently we have a dpc3941t modem, and we are having problems watching got without system pausing. will or could this higher speed device help
Answer: Yes would help, but possibly you need to upgrade your internet speed. This is a modem/router combo so takes up less space and will handle up to 1000mbps so plenty of room to grow if you decide to upgrade internet speed. With Comcast/Xfinity this works great.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this modem come with all the paperwork telling me how to change the password and name of the wifi
Answer: This modem does not have WIFI capabilities. You must purchase a router with WiFi and connect it to this modem. This is just a modem, not a modem router combo.
Question: Does it have a battery backup
Answer: Battery backup for most cable modem situations is worthless because, if your power is out, it's also likely that the amplifiers on the telephone poles for the cable are out as well, so no signal would get to the modem if it was still powered.
Question: How to set it up
Answer: Step 1 open box Step 2 unplug any modem and router you have if any Step 3 connect coaxial cable from wall to this modem Step 4 connect power to modem Step 5 turn on power Step 6 call your internet service provider and tell them you habe a new modem then give them mac and/or serial # of modem (this info is on bottom of modem on stand) Step 7 let them setup and update modem Step 8 plug cat cable from modem to laptop to test internet Step 9 if using router, plug in power to router and connect to modem. If router is still powered on (you skipped step 2), turn off router and wait 1 min, don't turn on yet. This resets the modem info in the router. Step 10 connect cat cable from modem to router Step 11 wait for router to startup, if internet is not online after 5 minutes, cycle power on both modem and router at the same time to refresh
Question: Is the delivery timely
Answer: Yes

User questions & answers

Question: Will this support xfinity extreme 1200mbps ? it's not on the supported device list
Answer: The Arris S33 is a DOCIS 3.1 capable device 32 x 8 rated for speeds up to 2.5 Gb. While the modem is indeed on Xfinity supported device list (check detailed discussions on dslreports.com), what matters is your router. Ensure you have a router capable of 1+Gb speeds.
Question: Is there a way to mount this device to a wall
Answer: We recommend placing the device on a tabletop in an open space to avoid any interference
Question: Is this modem compatible with suddenlink
Answer: It will work at the lower speeds since it is capable of up to 2.5Gb but runs just fine as low as 100mbps/5mbps (down/up) with 32x8 channels. Suddenlink allows ARRIS SB6190 and the S33 is a superior upgrade.
Question: Can you use both ethernet ports at the exact same time
Answer: Update...... I have picked mine up from BestBuy and YES you can use both Ports at the same time. I have the 2.5 to my PC and the other port to my Asus Ax11000 router. Hope this helps.

Motorola MG7550 16x4 Cable Modem Plus AC1900 Dual Band WiFi Gigabit Router with Power Boost and DFS, 686 Mbps Maximum DOCSIS 3.0 - Approved by Comcast Xfinity, Cox, Charter Spectrum, More (Black)

Motorola

Based on 4 reviews Check latest price
  • 16x4 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem plus a built-in AC1900 Dual Band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) WiFi Gigabit Router with four Gigabit (GigE) Ethernet ports, a firewall DFS, Power Boost, and more. This product is recommended for actual cable Internet service speeds up to 375 Mbps. A Broadcom cable modem chipset provides security from Denial of Service attacks. WiFi performance is exceptionally good, even in multi-dwelling units with lots of WiFi noise from neighbors. DFS and Power Boost are key
  • Requires cable Internet service. Approved by and for use with Comcast Xfinity and Xfinity X1, Cox, Charter Spectrum, Time Warner Cable, Suddenlink, WOW., CableOne and other cable service providers. Eliminate cable modem rental fees up to 156 dollars per year. (Savings are shown for Xfinity and vary by cable service provider. No cable modem is compatible with fiber optic, DSL, or satellite services from Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, Frontier, and others. Model MG7550 has no phone jack.)
  • Built-in high-speed Wi-Fi router with AC1900 Wi-Fi, and Power Boost, and DFS provides Internet access for Wi-Fi devices including smartphones, notebooks, tablets, game stations, HDTVs, Amazon Echo, Google Home, Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and AppleTV. Four 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports provide wired connections to Windows and Mac computers, HDTVs, game stations, streaming TV devices, and other Ethernet-capable devices.
  • Wireless Power Boost adds high-performance WiFi power amplifiers to boost the wireless signals to the legal limit, giving a significant boost in speed and range. The router can work on WiFi DFS frequencies, unlike most routers, so it is much less vulnerable to WiFi interference from neighbors. In addition, AnyBeam beamforming at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies focuses the signal on wireless clients to further enhance performance and range.
  • Integrating the cable modem and router creates a reliable connection that reduces unwieldy wiring and power adapter clutter while conserving desk space. The vertical design minimizes shelf space and improves cooling while looking great in any home or office. A two-year warranty plus rugged lightning and power surge circuits protect your investment. Includes phone and web support by friendly, professional USA-based technical support specialists. Phone support is provided in English and Spanish.

User questions & answers

Question: How easy is set up on this device? Would I have to call my provider (Comcast
Answer: It is super easy to set-up, however you usually have to contact comcast with any new device because they have to put it on their system. I basically plugged it in and called comcast, they found the device on the network and I was up and running. The only other step you need is to go into the device setup (the ip address is on the label) and login and set up your username and password for your accounts. There are other settings you can set, but for a basic setup that is all you need to do.
Question: What is the difference between this one and the $89.99 that you also offer
Answer: The MG7550 is both a 16X4 modem and an AC1900 router integrated into a single unit. The MB7420 is a 16X4 modem, but does not include an integrated wireless router. The $89.99 MB7420 would typically be used with a wireless router. The MG7550 has a very powerful router built in.
Question: Is this a 32 band modem
Answer: The MG7550 supports the 250 Mbps and 300 Mbps services which are the fastest offered by the major service providers using DOCSIS 3.0. The MG7550 does not support 32 channels down, but as a caution, 32 channels is not likely to buy you anything more. The next major cable modem speed increase will use a technology called DOCSIS 3.1. That new technology is at least a year away for most people and will be a premium-priced service. The major cable service providers are very unlikely to use more than 16 channels for DOCSIS 3.0 because that would not be an efficient use of their networks. So buying a DOCSIS 3.0 device with more than a 16 channels down is not likely to buy you anything.
Question: Sellers keep saying the range is excellent. what exactly is the range for this router? numbers please. i need facts before i invest
Answer: The range you will get is highly dependent upon what kind of building you are in and how many other wireless signals are in the area. The range you will get in an apartment with concrete walls is much different from the range you will get in a suburban house with drywall interior walls. Results are also highly dependent upon what client (notebook, tablet, phone etc.) you are using. There is an independent study by Netperian that compares the speeds and range of competing AC1900 cable modem gateways. Various building types are used in the test and speed ratings were taken in each room of the buildings. The results were that the Motorola MG7550 is MUCH better than Arris and significantly better than Netgear. The report is over 40 pages long, so you will readily see a few numbers for range are only partial information. With all of that said, in an open field the MG7550 averaged 214 Mbps download speeds at 1000 feet and 475 Mbps at 100 feet. Those were much better data rates than Netgear or Arris with identical conditions.
