Answer:	The DSM software come with a number of features to prevent malicious attacks. One of my units was hit with a ransomware attack. Nothing import on the unit as it was used for security camera video storage. I believe I was hit with what is called man in the middle hack. My credentials were taken when I periodically logged in to view the camera images. I was not taking the security seriously. Now I have turned on HTTPS and 2FA (two factor authentication). Point is that the features are there to secure you NAS but you have to make use of them. Hope this helps.

Answer:	Technically you can but not recommended. You will likely get terrible performance because the CPU and memory is not designed for this use case. 512MB RAM is very low for a datastore. This model is really geared towards traditional file sharing and media streaming. You want something with higher CPU and read/wrtie caching like the DS218/DS218+.
Question:	Is the memory upgradable
Answer:	No, the DS220j only supports 512MB
Question:	what physical size harddrives can be used
Answer:	Carlos is correct. 16tb is the limit of the ds218j or 8tb in raid configuration and the DS220j is 2ea 12 Tb for a total of 24Tb or 12Tb, in used in a raid situation.
Question:	If single drive is installed initially, then 2nd drive is added later. does raid 1 get configured? or does both drive need to be installed together
Answer:	I installed one drive initially, and then added a second drive later. The second drive was automatically added as a Raid 1 drive.

Answer:	I'm not sure about the newer model, but my TS3400 came with Seagate drives rated for *desktop* usage, i.e. 8 hours/day, 5 days/week. With them running 24x7 (it's NAS, not a dekstop!) I had to replace all 4 drives before the 3 year warranty expired. I would suggest checking with Buffalo directly about this if you are seriously considering a purchase of the product.

They are so much cheaper then networked attached storage anyway, less electronics to fail...just better all the way around unless you are dealing with someone who can't cope with connecting and disconnecting stuff, it's far better. Answer:	This is a network attached storage device. In order to use this with Windows 10 you'll need to map it as a network drive. Yes, the contents can be encrypted. No, it's not a USB device, it's a network device.

Answer:	To clarify, this can absolutely be used as storage for the media you host on a plex server but you will need to run the plex server on another device. Kind of Similar to DC Mike's setup; I have a an old AMD PC that hosts my plex server (Athlon x2 4400+, 8gb DDR2, and Radeon HD 6870 *can't remember if video card helps with plex decoding at all, but it's there anyway and has no other use to me) I do have a couple TB worth of media on HDDs in that box but the majority of my data is on similar NAS devices like this buffalo Linkstation. Literally any USB external or NAS drive can host media for a Plex server with extremely little chance of limited performance. The limiting factor in Plex performance comes with the capability of the computer hosting the server to decode and encode media to play on the device you're trying to stream to (for instance, accessing your plex server from another pc takes much fewer resources than on your ipad would require because the server pc has to reencode the media to a format that iOS can utilize) and, in the case of remote streaming, your internet connection. The 10+ year old pc I described can stream multiple 1080p video remotely with no visible lag and I've tried as much as 7 local network 1080p streams and had not issue there.tl;dr - This can host all of your music, video, pictures for a plex server to access but not run the plex server itself.

1. While connected to a computer, the wireless function is turned off;

Installation and Operation Tips

1. Please download and install the SSKCloud App on "Apple store" or "Google Play" for mobile devices;

2. The software for PC/Mac is on the drive itself. Just use it as an external drive to copy the binaries onto your system and install the ''app''. Or you can check our website to see if have the newer version.

3 . For computer, You can also MAP the SSK HDD and / or a USB device connected to the Host Port to Windows Explorer on a PC or to a Mac using the Samba Protocol. SSKCloud software has addressed to access Samba. Please Click : " Samba Management", it will switch to Samba interface automatically, so you don't need to enter the IP address and password manually.

4. Once mapped on a PC or Mac you will find a series of folders already setup under \share_sda1. The device comes with a bunch of "default" folders that you can't delete (they are all "system folders"). These must be left on the device as they are but you may freely add additional folders here and as sub folders under the already setup folders. You also can use your PC or Mac to read /write / delete files in these folders that will be accessible on the PC or Mac as well as from a phone or tablet connected to the SSK locally or remotely.

5. For Mac OS, it doesn't support Time Machine backup wirelessly, only can work on USB mode. But the SSKCloud App supports Real-time synchronous update and backup of designated folders on both Mac and Windows Computer.

6. The hard drive have private area and public area to protect private data, but it doesn't support encrypting every folder.

Answer:	This is only a wired NAS. But as long as you have it on the same network, your wireless devices will access it. But the NAS will only get the network from a wired switch/router.

Answer:	It is difficult to answer this completely since we are not familiar with your particular environment. Our products do not have native support for Kodi or Plex, but the TeraStation 1200 does have a built in DLNA server that may suit your needs. If you already have a media server in place you may be able to use the TeraStation as additional network storage for that server.

Answer:	It sounds like you're asking if it transcodes the video files (like a dedicated SOHO/Pro NAS). If that's what you're asking then the answer is an emphatic "no". You'll be able to play the files, but you are going to be downloading the entire file, not a scaled down version for your device (if the file is a 4K video that's 10 GB, the entire 10 GB will be streamed to your device). Transcoding (especially on the fly) is something that requires a fair amount of processing power and RAM to accomplish. There's just no way to include that kind of hardware at this price point. If you want to use your bandwidth efficiently, buy a dedicated NAS. If you're the only one utilizing said bandwidth, this should work for you.

Answer:	Yes. A long story short, my WD My Cloud Mirror suffered a "blown out" ethernet port due to a lightening strike. I purchased the EX2 Ultra (diskless) and placed my old WD Red drives, that were in the My Cloud Mirror, and it worked flawlessly. It didn't skip a beat. I was up and running like nothing happened. I was so relieved that the content on the drives were unaffected!

Answer:	2 4TB drives wich can then be run in a raid configuration.

Answer:	Well, this is an old question, so nobody will see my glorious contribution; but here goes anyway! In order to use RAID 1, the two drives in use for that must be of the same size. They should be identical --- well nearly so. But, if one of the drives is slower than the other, the slower drive controls the speed (obviously). Two 6 TB drives in RAID 1, however, does not give you exactly 6 TB. There is a small part of the discs that gets assigned overhead duty to keep track of the status of the mirroring and to manage the mirroring. You could assume a high percentage --- maybe even more than 99%. I can't find any real figures for it, but since a 6 TB drive doesn't hold 6 TB anyway, you might just assume something like 5.98 TB for two nominal 6 TB drives in RAID 1. Keep in mind that RAID isn't free!! Not only is the capacity of the RAID array less than the combined capacity of the drives, there is also a performance hit because everything has to be written more than once and depending on which RAID (n) you choose, it may be split across several drives. Another consideration which I had not previously considered is the age of the drives. If you start with two identical drives, four years from now each of those drives will have been in service for, guess what, four years. If one of them fails, the other may not be long behind. Some folks (what we usually refer to as "THEY") would suggest a mix of drive ages. Your mileage may vary, as "they" say. :-)

Answer:	If it’s on the same network you can just transfer the information. But it’ll cause a serious lag issue on your network. To avoid that you can use a crossover cable to connect both directly and transfer that way. The first is extremely easy but will cause some lag on your network while transferring and the other way would require some technical knowledge. Sorry that there wasn’t a perfect solution but hopefully this will help point you in the direction best for your situation. Answer:	You can run THEIR surveillance station, which looks pretty good, but you must pay per seat (camera) and is pricey in my opinion. I’m using my computer with BlueIris with a reasonable one time license fee. And of course I’m using the NAS for storage and an AI person detection setup to save hard drive space.

Answer:	Also please note I run 5 ST1000NM0016 7200RPM 10TB drives in a RAID 5 config with 16GB ram, 258GB SSD cache, with a 10Gbps LAN back bone and get about 200MBps or 2000Gbps sustained xfer rate. The NAS has no issue but we are talking about a $6,000 setup at lest. With a 1Gbps LAN you will never get that kind of xfer rate because of LAN overhead.
