7 best solid states
Solid-state refers to a type of electronic device or material that uses solid-state properties to perform various functions, including data storage, computing, and electronic components. Here's what you should know about solid-state in the context of internal solid-state drives (SSDs), data storage, computer accessories, and electronics:
Solid-State Drives (SSDs): SSDs are a type of data storage device used in computers and electronic devices.Unlike traditional Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) that use spinning disks to store data, SSDs use solid-state NAND flash memory to store data. This design provides several advantages, including faster data access times, improved durability, and lower power consumption.
NAND Flash Memory: NAND flash memory is a key component of SSDs and is a type of non-volatile storage that retains data even when the power is turned off. NAND flash memory cells are made from semiconductors and are organized into a grid. There are different types of NAND flash, including SLC (Single-Level Cell), MLC (Multi-Level Cell), TLC (Triple-Level Cell), and QLC (Quad-Level Cell), with varying levels of data density and performance.
Performance: SSDs offer significantly faster read and write speeds compared to traditional HDDs, making them ideal for tasks that require quick data access, such as booting up the operating system, loading applications, and transferring files.
Durability: SSDs have no moving parts, which makes them more durable and less susceptible to mechanical failure compared to HDDs. They are also less susceptible to shock and vibration.
Capacity: SSDs come in various capacities, ranging from a few gigabytes to multiple terabytes. The choice of capacity depends on the user's storage needs.
Form Factors: SSDs come in different form factors, including 2.5-inch, M.2, and U.2, among others. These form factors determine the physical size and interface compatibility of the SSD, making them suitable for different types of devices.
Endurance: NAND flash memory has a limited number of write/erase cycles. The endurance of an SSD depends on factors like the type of NAND flash used and the quality of the controller. Modern SSDs employ wear-leveling algorithms to distribute write cycles evenly across memory cells, extending the lifespan of the drive.
Trim Support: SSDs may benefit from Trim support, which helps maintain performance by erasing unused data blocks and preparing them for new data storage.
Security: Some SSDs come with built-in encryption features, such as hardware encryption and support for Self-Encrypting Drives (SEDs), to protect data from unauthorized access.
Use Cases: SSDs are used in various applications, including personal computers, laptops, servers, gaming consoles, smartphones, and more. They are particularly beneficial in scenarios where speed and durability are crucial.
In summary, solid-state drives are an integral part of modern data storage and computing systems, offering improved performance, durability, and energy efficiency compared to traditional hard drives. They are widely used in a variety of electronic devices and have revolutionized data storage in the world of computers and electronics.

User questions & answers
Question: | I just bought i want to use with an imac and a pc should i plug it in when i get it to imac first and if i do can i drag pc files to it after |
Answer: | I would do a clean format of it on the imac first, you can choose exFAT (it will work on both PC and mac) or you can choose Mac OS Extended (HFS+) which is more stable than exFAT, but you will need software on your PC to read/write to the drive. If the PC is your main machine I would just choose exFAT. |
Question: | How long is the usb cable |
Answer: | Measured at 16 inches. |
Question: | Should the cable go in smoothly, or does it kind of snap in and need some pull to come out? Just got mine and wondering if that is normal |
Answer: | The first one I got the cable did not fit well and Samsung replaced the drive. The second one has been fine |
Question: | If i use this drive on my 2012 imac with usb 3.0, will the transfer speeds be less than 540mb/s |
Answer: | Your iMac has USB 3.0 which is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1. That has about half the theoretical maximum transfer rate of USB 3.1 Gen 2, which is the interface used by this drive. On the upside, it is still fully compatible with USB 3.0/3.1 Gen 1 and while the transfer rate you’ll experience will be lower than if you had a computer with Gen 2 USB, it really isn’t that much slower in actual use. If you’re moving from any spinning platter drive to an SSD regardless of the interface you were using with the platter drive, you will see a HUGE performance improvement using this external SSD drive. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Received this item today and the "certificate has expired"...what does this mean |
Answer: | Did you download the update? It could be related to the base software on the drive being outdated. |
Question: | Can I use this as an external backup drive? Is there a back up software included |
Answer: | Do not use the Password Protection. If you just installed, you can disable the Password Protection feature on the Settings screen of the Samsung Portable SSD software as follows: Click the "Set" button on the Main screen, switch the "Lock" button from ON to OFF, enter a password, and save it. Otherwise you cannot expect unattended backup's. |
Question: | How should this be formatted and setup to use as a boot drive for macintosh |
Answer: | Even after reformatting as an OSX drive (it comes formatted for Windows), it cannot be used as an external boot drive. However, I used Drive Genius to format it as a "Bootwell" drive, and that seemed to enable it to be used as a boot drive. You will need to clone a current drive to the Samsung T5 if you want it to boot up with all the apps you used to have. |
Question: | What is the tbw |
Answer: | Samsung website: * 5 years or TBW (250 GB: 75 TBW; 500 GB/1 TB: 150 TBW, 2/4 TB: 300 TBW), whichever comes first. So, for the 500 GB SSD, 150 terabytes can be written before there is an increased likelihood of failure. This depends on many factors, but mostly on how full the drive is. If the drive is nearly full, remaining free cells may be subjected to excessive writes. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this one have the option of Transferring files or photos from phone directly onto drive or is computer needed |
Answer: | Yes you do. The SSD is formatted for the PC/windows. I formatted the drive on my Mac using disk utilities to the exFAT file format, so I can use It on both my PC and my Mac. If you are only going to use it on a Mac, you should consider it formatting to Apple’s newest file system APFS. But however you decided to format the ADATA, it only takes a few minutes, the SSD drive is VERY fast. |
Question: | The posted dimensions do not seem correct when looking at user photos (4.34 inches x 2.24 inches x 1.68 inches). Is it really 1.68" high |
Answer: | mine came in NTFS - but formatting this drive takes maybe a minute or so. No big deal at all. |
Question: | Can I transfer smaller files |
Answer: | 2.9 x 1.8 x 0.4 inch |
Question: | Can this be used to provide cctv video storage (constantly reading/writing............forever |
Answer: | Fyi, difficult to whether files will be compatible with MacOS since that depends on what those files are. Further, the drive would need to be configured for MacOS (newest Mac format - APFS, MacOS Extended [Journaled], Ex-FAT which is compatible with both MacOS and Windows). Given that this drive will be formatted for MacOS, files are data files vs. Windows or Windows compatible applications, you should be able to use this drive to transfer those files (again, data vs. Windows apps). Conversely, MacOS is far more capable of reading even some Windows and Windows compatible applications than Microsoft is in reading MacOS installed applications. Again, it's difficult to tell from your scant detail, what those files are and if they will be compatible with MacOS. Additionally, your Windows system will not "see", recognize or access a drive that is formatted in a MacOS protocol (APFS, MacOS Extended [Journaled]). For Window to access your new drive, that drive will need to be formatted as Ex-FAT to be read by Microsoft and MacOS. |
Question: | Does this need to be formatted for mac before using. os high sierra |
Question: | Is this drive preformatted in exfat or ntfs? info on amazon and elsewhere seems contradictory. i'm hoping to plug and play with an ipad pro |
Answer: | Measured at 16 inches. |
Question: | What are external dimensions of the SE800, for case sizing purposes |
Answer: | The first one I got the cable did not fit well and Samsung replaced the drive. The second one has been fine |
Question: | I’m switching from pc to a macbook pro. would this be a good device to help me transfer all my files |
User questions & answers
Question: | I want to add this as a 2nd drive. Does it come with cables |
Answer: | I routinely use it with my S9. No additional hardware needed. Samsung designed it to work well with Samsung devices. |
Question: | Does it comes with cloning the old drive software like samsung evo |
Answer: | Yes. You might need to Google how to use an external drive, but the read/write speeds on this are exceptional (1GB/s), and the USB-C to USB-C cable it comes with is top-notch (as is the USB-C to USB-A cable). Obviously, you're going to want to be vary careful not to move the cables when in-use. |
Question: | Besides the price point, what is the difference between this and the samsung 1tb |
Answer: | Yes, you should be able to use this as an external drive for the PS5 and get full speed on it as long as you plug it into one of the USB 3.2 ports. However, you will still not be able to play PS5 games off of it. You can play PS4 games off of it with improved load times. Per Daniel Bastian's answer regarding the Xbox Series X. You can use the T7 on Series X, but you will not get the full speed. Series X uses USB 3.1 gen 1 ports, which are slower than this SSD. For Series X, you would be better off buying the T5 SSD. |
Question: | Never heard of this brand are their products Reliable? Do they have good customer service and return policies |
Answer: | Reformatting this external SSD will not do anything to its cache. In any case, the cache is used only during read/write operations, you can’t directly address it as a user and don’t have to think about it at all. You can reformat in APFS for best Mac performance or use any other scheme you need, including multiple partitions each formatted differently. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this ssd be converted to be used as an external drive? if you have done it then how did you do it |
Answer: | LaCie hard drives do come formatted for Mac, but not being a Mac user, I don't know the specifics, or if there is more than one way to format a Mac drive. You can certainly reformat to your liking before use and that would only take a few minutes. |
Question: | Does anyone know how long a typical SSD can last in years |
Answer: | It is a single product with 6 10 TB hard drive... |
Question: | How is this different from the EVO |
Answer: | I'm a computer programmer, and RAID is *never* a backup. You can, however, greatly increase your data security by setting it to RAID 6, with an identical 2nd machine as the "backup". If you only want one device, you can set it to RAID 1, which mirrors each drive. That will likely achieve your goal of the data intact if the motherboard fails. Keep in mind any data corruption, viruses, malware, power surges, etc., will also be mirrored. To simplify RAID 6, if any drive fails, it will ideally rebuild itself assuming additional drives do not fail or have impacted bad sectors. I would stay away from RAID 5 at great capacities. |
Question: | what is the main difference between the qvo and evo models |
Answer: | GAZ, could you define "used"? Thank you - BLT |
