3TB and 2TB | 7200 RPM
SATA 6Gb/s & SAS 6Gb/s
Increasing Capacity Density by 50%
Recent measures such as data de-duplication and thin provisioning have not been able to stem the explosive petabyte (PB) growth requirements in cloud storage and data centers. Pervasive Internet computing with remotely stored email, pictures and social media, all being accessed from light-weight tablet and notebook computers, is changing consumer expectations. Ongoing worldwide government data retention regulations and security requirements are also driving up data center and private cloud storage needs. At the same time, tile space and megawatts remain at a premium, while in some highly built-out metropolitan areas both are at an absolute "no-growth" state. To meet these demands, the Ultrastar 7K3000 delivers 50% more capacity in the same footprint and does so at a 32% reduction in watts/GB versus our prior generation Ultrastar A7K2000 product. It is now possible to achieve a colossal 1.8 PB in the footprint of a standard 19-inch enterprise storage rack by stacking ten 4U, 60-bay enclosures.
Offering Choices of Interface and Encryption
The HGST Ultrastar 7K3000 is the first HGST 7200 RPM drive available in both 6Gb/s SATA and 6Gb/s SAS interfaces and also available in two encryption options. The Ultrastar 7K3000 SATA model integrates easily with legacy SATA and Fibre Channel to SATA environments. The Ultrastar 7K3000 SATA model is available with a bulk data encryption (BDE) option. The Ultrastar 7K3000 dual-port SAS model is targeted at emerging 6Gb/s SAS enterprise infrastructure and is available with industry standard TCG Enterprise_A encryption. When enabled, both of these hardware-based implementations encrypt all data on the drive using a private security key as it is written to the disk, and then decrypt it with the key as it is retrieved, giving users an extreme level of data protection. These security options not only protect sensitive data but also reduce the time and effort involved in re-deploying hard drives since without the key, the data is unrecoverable.
Combining 7200 RPM Performance and Granular Power Control
Operating at 7200 RPM, the HGST Ultrastar 7K3000 offers better overall performance than slower RPM capacity-oriented drives, and does so at impressively low power consumption rates. When compared to HGST's previous generation Ultrastar A7K2000, the 7K3000 is up to 3 times faster in sustained data transfer rates. The Ultrastar 7K3000 can help data centers achieve lower AC power and HVAC requirements. With five Advanced Power Management modes, the Ultrastar 7K3000 achieves a 59% reduction in watts during low RPM idle mode, and uses less than 1W during standby/sleep modes, freeing up precious headroom for growing enterprise needs.
Innovating for a More Sustainable Environment
The Ultrastar 7K3000 demonstrates HGST ecological leadership with its halogen-free design and power-efficient operation. Both these features serve to qualify the drive for the HGST EcoTrac classification, which identifies products that minimize environmental impact in the areas of product design, manufacturing, operation and disposal.
HGST Quality and Service
HGST's Ultrastar 7K3000 extends the company's long-standing tradition of performance and capacity leadership. The proven drive design enables high reliability and availability to customer data. Ultrastar quality, performance and world class technical support and service provides customers with a lower total cost of ownership over previous generations. HGST drives are backed by an array of technical support and services, which may include customer and integration assistance. HGST is dedicated to providing a complete portfolio of HDD/SSD solutions to satisfy today's monumental computing needs.

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of cable, and controller card will i need to use this drive? Can you list so i can get this to work for an internal setup |
Answer: | I had to extend 2 sets of wires. One was a video plug like what you have on a dvd player. I'm sure you can just buy a cable from the store and plug it in to make it longer. I didn't feel like going to store so I just cut the cable and spliced in wires. If you buy one make sure it has three wires in it if you can. They are very small wires maybe 10 or even 5 amp so somewhere around 18gauge. Same thing with the power wires for the mirror to go to the battery. Had to extend those too. There is a little red wire that is attached to both ends of the video cable that only a few inches long. I have no clue what it is and it works without having to use it so I just taped it off. |
Question: | Can I use this as a primary drive for a regular PC |
Answer: | Depends on Vehicle and how you run the cable. My run was from rear bumper through body frame, into cab and up to the rear view mirror. Long enough. 2000 Chevy Silverado. Should be more than adequate for most applications. |
Question: | Does this work with Gen 3 1950 Dell Poweredge server with a Perc 5i Raid Controller |
Answer: | They are not needed...First disconnect your battery negative wire first. Then positive...what i did was the mirror monitor power wire i tapped into my fuse box under dash to a 20amp spot that turns on when ignition is engaged , then grounded the negative to chase of car....ran the video wire thru car under carpet ...i mounted the camera on lic plate the drilled hole behind bumper into wheel well cause i have a subi impreza wrx turbo all wheel drive..i connected the video connections together n power...then the positive n negative from camera i grounded to under chasis n power wire u gota take one of ur tail lights out that has a reverse light n u got have a power tester tool to find out which wire that goes into ur reverse bulb is the positive, splice into it and connect the positive wire to it n use a good onnecter..then hook ir battery back up and test it...when u start your car and put it in reverse your mirror monitor will appear ,,,its awesome hope i helped let me know if you have anymore wuestions or problems...btw there is a 2nd video connection as u can see its if you wanted to hook a second monitor up,,,i love mine its awesome...good luck..email me at [email protected] if u need to.. |
Question: | does this item come with the full 5 year warranty or is it a factory replacement one with shorter warranty |
Answer: | That’s what this was. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the 2tb (st2000dm008) internal hard drive cmr or smr |
Answer: | The 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB drives are all SMR, which means they are slow for random writes and not suitable as boot drives. (Google "Why SMR drives are sub-optimal for write-intensive workloads".) |
Question: | Is this really 7200rpm? the model number suggests otherwise |
Answer: | I got the ST4000DM004 which claims 7200 rpm on amazon and my computer is reporting it has a media rotation rate of 5425 rpm |
Question: | Is a sata cable included in the package |
Answer: | Cables not included. You can buy a SATA data cable and likely the appropriate power cable for your computer right here on Amazon. Depending on your power supply, the power cable may already be connected to it in your computer -- some have that and some do not. |
Question: | Is this 7200 or 5400rpm |
Answer: | Only the 1 TB (#ST1000DM010) and 2 TB (#ST2000DM008) models are 7200, all the larger models are 5400. Both the llisted speed and model number change in the product description as you pick different disk size options. This is consistent with Seagate's website -- From the home page, drill down through (or search for) Internal / Hard Drives / BarraCuda - Learn More, and then click the 3.5 inch models tab (NOT the 3.5 inch PRO models tab). Then click on the data sheet next to any model to get a PDF with a table containing all of the models along with their drive speeds and other specs.. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this drive smr if so i don't want it |
Answer: | No, it’s not. All Ironwolf and Itonwolf pro drives are SMR free, according to Seagate |
Question: | Does any one know a case where 3 could fit inside |
Answer: | I have 3 of these in a Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS918+ works great! |
Question: | I purchased (2) 12-tb: anyone knows why i get 10.91-tb for each? why are we short |
Answer: | manufacturer considers 1 Megabyte to be 1000 Kilobytes, 1 Gigabyte to be 1000 Megabytes, 1 Terabyte to be 1000 Gigabytes and so on. This is correct considering that kilo means 1000 and mega means 1000000 (10^6). However, computers calculate on base 2 and to them, 1 MB is actually 1024 kilobytes, 1GB is 1024MB and 1 TB is 1024GB. This difference in the method of computation is responsible for this "missing space." Let's take an example of a 500 GB hard disk. From a manufacturer's point of view, the 500GB will have 500*1000*1000*1000 = 500000000000 bytes. From a computer's point of view, 500GB is actually 500*1024*1024*1024 = 536870912000 bytes. So, a hard drive that promises to have 500 GB storage space will actually display 465.66GB, 536870912000-500000000000 = 36870912000 bytes (34.34GB) less storage space when connected to a computer. This is true of every drive you buy |
Question: | Can this be used as a normal hdd storage drive for a desktop pc |
Answer: | I have two NAS drives in my computer, and they work great. I bought two easystore external hard drives and removed the hard hard drives from the case. The hard drives are 5400 rpm drives. I only archive things on those drives, and they work great. The 7200 rpm drives are better for gaming but more expensive. The easystores only costed me $150. They also have a 256mb cache. |
