User questions & answers
Question: | What am i missing, when i plug it in, nothing happens - my computer doesn't show it at all. do i need to download something |
Answer: | I have two of these and am about to get a third. No, you don't need to download anything (at least on windows and linux computers). I reformat mine to NTFS because I switch between OS's. One thing to note the usb "A" adapter is "notched" and will only fit on one way completely, you probably got a bad one, it happens, send it back if no luck. |
Question: | Can I use this to backup my PC AND also save files from my macbook? Id like to save files from both on one HD?!?! (2012 macbook & HP Desktop |
Answer: | Basically, my home setup is an all-Mac setup. What I did immediately after I got it out of the box was to format it and partition it 200 GB HFS+ and 800 GB APFS. The HFS+ partition is used for Time Machine, and the APFS partition has four volumes (capacity is allocated dynamically between volumes within the APFS partition). How I would use this in a mixed environment: one HFS+ partition for Time Machine (you can't use APFS partitions for Time Machine); one APFS partition for the files that will be used only with a Mac; and one ExFAT partition for instances where you need to be able to access the file in Windows and on a Mac. Also, make sure you keep that USB-C to USB-A connector that comes with the drive; it comes with about a 6-inch cable with USB-C connectors at both ends. |
Question: | Is this drive good for running an OS from |
Answer: | YES! I have 2 that I use for this, be aware you may have to change your system setup to use, On mine I have to change SATA controller mode to AHCI from RAID and UEFI to Legacy support and boot priority to Legacy first (Lenovo). Once you have those setting fixed you will be amazed how fast it will run. I run fedora on a 1TB for storage and Fedora Securrity Spin on a 500 GB drive to use to recover data and fix customers machines. I have also run CentOS and Linux Mint with no issues. |
Question: | Can you please tell me if this storage is in Solid state or is it a spinning disc? Thank you |
Answer: | The name of this item is: "Sandisk Portable SSD (SOLID STATE Drive)"......... That clearly means it's NOT SOLID STATE. No they're/I am just joking. In all serious-ness though: it is indeed a "Solid State drive" with no moving/spinning disks. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I just bought i want to use with an imac and a pc should i plug it in when i get it to imac first and if i do can i drag pc files to it after |
Answer: | I would do a clean format of it on the imac first, you can choose exFAT (it will work on both PC and mac) or you can choose Mac OS Extended (HFS+) which is more stable than exFAT, but you will need software on your PC to read/write to the drive. If the PC is your main machine I would just choose exFAT. |
Question: | How long is the usb cable |
Answer: | Measured at 16 inches. |
Question: | Should the cable go in smoothly, or does it kind of snap in and need some pull to come out? Just got mine and wondering if that is normal |
Answer: | The first one I got the cable did not fit well and Samsung replaced the drive. The second one has been fine |
Question: | If i use this drive on my 2012 imac with usb 3.0, will the transfer speeds be less than 540mb/s |
Answer: | Your iMac has USB 3.0 which is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1. That has about half the theoretical maximum transfer rate of USB 3.1 Gen 2, which is the interface used by this drive. On the upside, it is still fully compatible with USB 3.0/3.1 Gen 1 and while the transfer rate you’ll experience will be lower than if you had a computer with Gen 2 USB, it really isn’t that much slower in actual use. If you’re moving from any spinning platter drive to an SSD regardless of the interface you were using with the platter drive, you will see a HUGE performance improvement using this external SSD drive. |

Utilizing SSD inside, CipherShield 4-Bay RAID 256-bit AES Hardware Encrypted SSD drive supports large capacity, USB 3.0/eSATA interface, and prevents unauthorized access to your digital data. It supports Intelligent RAID function: RAID 0, RAID 3, RAID 5, RAID 10, or Large. Removable HDD trays support hot-plug replacement of drives (only for RAID with redundancy mode). HDD intelligent sleep function is supported. CipherShield design features a chip embedded in the access key which matches the AES encryption module on the controller board. The drive will automatically lock down its content once the key is unplugged, or power is shut off. And without the access key, data will not be seen or accessed in the event of theft or loss of the external drive. Data stored on the hard drive are safeguarded by hardware-based National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) certified industrial strength AES (Advanced Encryption standard) cryptographic engine. The advantage of hardware encryption over software encryption is that you need not be concerned about Trojans/viruses or software upgrades, which results in a decrease of total cost of ownership. Since CipherShield encrypts data independent of the operating system; removing the drive and connecting it directly to the SATA BUS will not defeat the encryption. Unit is bundled with two keys and registration is required for key duplication. User questions & answers
Question: | Does this one have the option of Transferring files or photos from phone directly onto drive or is computer needed |
Answer: | Yes you do. The SSD is formatted for the PC/windows. I formatted the drive on my Mac using disk utilities to the exFAT file format, so I can use It on both my PC and my Mac. If you are only going to use it on a Mac, you should consider it formatting to Apple’s newest file system APFS. But however you decided to format the ADATA, it only takes a few minutes, the SSD drive is VERY fast. |
Question: | The posted dimensions do not seem correct when looking at user photos (4.34 inches x 2.24 inches x 1.68 inches). Is it really 1.68" high |
Answer: | mine came in NTFS - but formatting this drive takes maybe a minute or so. No big deal at all. |
Question: | Can I transfer smaller files |
Answer: | 2.9 x 1.8 x 0.4 inch |
Question: | Can this be used to provide cctv video storage (constantly reading/writing............forever |
Answer: | Fyi, difficult to whether files will be compatible with MacOS since that depends on what those files are. Further, the drive would need to be configured for MacOS (newest Mac format - APFS, MacOS Extended [Journaled], Ex-FAT which is compatible with both MacOS and Windows). Given that this drive will be formatted for MacOS, files are data files vs. Windows or Windows compatible applications, you should be able to use this drive to transfer those files (again, data vs. Windows apps). Conversely, MacOS is far more capable of reading even some Windows and Windows compatible applications than Microsoft is in reading MacOS installed applications. Again, it's difficult to tell from your scant detail, what those files are and if they will be compatible with MacOS. Additionally, your Windows system will not "see", recognize or access a drive that is formatted in a MacOS protocol (APFS, MacOS Extended [Journaled]). For Window to access your new drive, that drive will need to be formatted as Ex-FAT to be read by Microsoft and MacOS. |
Question: | Does this need to be formatted for mac before using. os high sierra |
Question: | Is this drive preformatted in exfat or ntfs? info on amazon and elsewhere seems contradictory. i'm hoping to plug and play with an ipad pro |
Answer: | Measured at 16 inches. |
Question: | What are external dimensions of the SE800, for case sizing purposes |
Answer: | The first one I got the cable did not fit well and Samsung replaced the drive. The second one has been fine |
Question: | I’m switching from pc to a macbook pro. would this be a good device to help me transfer all my files |
