14 best western digital western digital western digital external raid enclosures
RAID, which stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks, is a technology that combines multiple disk drives into a single unit for the purpose of data redundancy, performance improvement, or both.
These enclosures typically house multiple hard drives and provide various RAID configurations, allowing users to choose the level of redundancy or performance that suits their requirements. Some key features and aspects of WD external RAID enclosures include:
Capacities can range from a few terabytes to multiple petabytes.
Each RAID level offers a different balance between performance and data protection.
In the event of a drive failure, data can often be reconstructed from the remaining drives.
This feature enhances the ease of maintenance and minimizes downtime.
These drives are specifically designed for use in NAS (Network Attached Storage) systems and RAID environments, offering reliability and performance.

User questions & answers
Question: | How many RPM |
Answer: | I am 100% certain that the drive inside is 5400 RPM. The 4TB is a ASIN:B013HNYV8I WD Blue WD40EZRZ 5400rpm.See my review: https://www.amazon.com/review/R388G5P0ACHROS |
Question: | I did not realize this has a a/c power cord. does it require a/c power to work or will the usb power it |
Answer: | A desktop hard drive requires both 12 volts and 5 volts for power while a USB port only supplies 5 volt power. A laptop hard drive does not require 12V power which is why portable drives based on such drives can be powered by the USB port. |
Question: | What is the hd speed for this storage device? do they spin at 7500 rpm |
Answer: | We'll need to clarify "speed" vs. rpm to answer the spirit of your question. First, to answer one of the above commenters,- Having RAID doesn't alter the disk spin rate of each drive, and for the original poster the hard drive rpm speed is not necessarily directly tied to the ultimate "speed" you're thinking of, for general questions of speed you should be looking at the Data Read/Write speeds. This unit does have RAID 0 setup out of the box with two 4TB WD Red 5400 rpm drives. But the fact that it's 5400 rpm isn't because it's "cheapo" as mentioned above, it's a very deliberate decision on behalf of the product manufacturers, for very good reason. Most "NAS Certified" spinning hard drives, as the WD Red series is, are 5400 rpm, this is because NAS devices are generally always left on, so that any PC on the network can access the device when needed. Using 5400 rpm drives in this way saves power consumption for each drive; it also keeps the radiant heat down coming off each and every drive in the NAS unit (this unit only has two hard drives but they can have any number of drives: 2, 4, 5, 8, 12, even more in high end units), so if you keep a unit like this on in your room or office it keeps the temperature of the room cooler; it also extends the life of each of the drives, slower spinning disks are proven to be less likely to run into issues than their faster spinning counterparts, and a longer life is CRITICALLY important given the use case of these drives as RAID enabled backup/storage destinations- If RAID 1 is being used, the higher the drive failure rate, the more often you need to be reacting quickly to replace the failed drive, because the second a drive dies in a RAID array you're up against a clock of unknown time-limit counting down to the loss of your data, because if another drive dies before you replace the first and rebuild the array, you will lose all the data on the NAS (in most cases); If RAID 0 is being used as is setup by default, you lose ALL the data the moment EITHER drive dies. So drive longevity is very important. Beyond all those benefits, there's one very important reason to note regarding why it doesn't really negatively impact speed very noticeably when 5400 rpm drives are used- Drives used in a RAID array work as a team, and generally speaking the more drives in a RAID array the faster the read speed, because reads for each file are distributed across all of the spinning disks, meaning the 2 discs in RAID 0 only need to spin up to retrieve half the file each. 3 Discs? 1/3 the seek time (i'm oversimplifying but that's generally a good way to look at it). Given these massive speed increases while working in parallel, any speed bottlenecks you may run into are just as likely to be due to any number of other interface areas. TL;DR- 5400 rpm is GOOD for NAS devices! Increasing to 7200 rpm provides negligible data access speed increases, and could cause various long-term issues. If you need a drive speed increase nowadays you simply pay-up for SSD drives and live in luxury. |
Question: | Does somebody know which hdd is inside the new wd my book 8 tb ? maybe a helium hitachi or a red wd |
Answer: | Previously in the case of the 8TB model WD80EZAZ. As of Jan 2021 (and probably earlier) they use WD80EDAZ, mine was manufactured late Sept. 2020. These new ones don't appear to be helium sealed and run quite a bit hotter. Previously the EZAZ drew 400/500mA while these newer EDAZ draw 700/900mA from the +5/12V rails so that probably accounts for the extra heat. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do the rear usb ports support data? meaning, can you also plug in an extra usb thumb flash drive for transfers, etc. i see that they are blue color |
Answer: | USB ports are charging only. Not a hub. |
Question: | Xbox one X my 12tb drive is only downloading in 40mb when its rated to go as high as 250mb. This is not normal right |
Answer: | I have two WD Mybook 10TB HDDs and they act oddly, too. They vary between 130MB/s to 30MB/s for no known reason on a dedicated USB3.1 port. NO other drives are in use other than the NVe 128GB internal drive on Win10home 64bit system. Either HDD can start at 130MB/s and within seconds be bogged down at 30MB/s for 5 minutes at a time...briefly go back to 110MB/s, then right back down to 30MB/s. This is while transferring files from the internal NVe drive to the MyBook HDD. It may be cache management that is perhaps screwing around with the drive I/O. Either that or there is some "wear management" going on in the HDDs and it is alternating between PHYSICAL inner and outer tracks on the drive. Typically as you fill-up more of a standard HDD, the MB/s decreases and it can be significant...but this happens even when these MyBook HDDs are brand new, with no new added data as yet. My lower capacity WD HDDs (1TB and 2TB) attached via a Wavlink HDD USB3.0 docking station do NOT act like these higher capacity drives. They have consistent and as expected I/O speeds typically exceeding 120MB/s. |
Question: | Can this drive be removed from case and used as an internal sata drive |
Answer: | It was not as easy to remove as most usb cases, because there are 4 odd screws that hold the case together, which none of my tools fit. So, I took a small coping type saw and just cut diagonally on each corner just inside the screws so they wouldn't hold the top half. After that, it was just a simple screwdriver to pop all the internal clips around the seam of the case. Then inside, the drive was secured to the case with 2 pins on the long sides of the drive, where I pried the sides outward with pliers to free it from the case. The usb board unscrewed from the drive easily. The drive is actually a WD Ultrastar Data Center DC HC320, dated Nov 30 2019, which is just awesome. My understanding is that the drive may not power up if installed internally because of pin 3. The workaround I'm going to try for that is to just connect an older type 4 pin power connector to sata adapter, which is supposed to prevent the problem with pin 3, 3.3V power. Other workarounds include covering pin 3 with some type of electrical tape. |
Question: | Is this drive compatible with PC's to be used as a standard external drive or is it for gaming consoles only |
Answer: | This disk can be used not only with consoles but also PC and TV (if it supports large disks). |

Question: | what if the NAS device fails? Can you remove the drives and put in another device to recover data or are they hardware layer encrypted |
Answer: | Yes. A long story short, my WD My Cloud Mirror suffered a "blown out" ethernet port due to a lightening strike. I purchased the EX2 Ultra (diskless) and placed my old WD Red drives, that were in the My Cloud Mirror, and it worked flawlessly. It didn't skip a beat. I was up and running like nothing happened. I was so relieved that the content on the drives were unaffected! |
Question: | Is the 8tb option include 1 drive at 8tbs or 2-4tb hdds |
Answer: | 2 4TB drives wich can then be run in a raid configuration. |
Question: | Im assuming any advertised capacity would be half using raid |
Answer: | Well, this is an old question, so nobody will see my glorious contribution; but here goes anyway! In order to use RAID 1, the two drives in use for that must be of the same size. They should be identical --- well nearly so. But, if one of the drives is slower than the other, the slower drive controls the speed (obviously). Two 6 TB drives in RAID 1, however, does not give you exactly 6 TB. There is a small part of the discs that gets assigned overhead duty to keep track of the status of the mirroring and to manage the mirroring. You could assume a high percentage --- maybe even more than 99%. I can't find any real figures for it, but since a 6 TB drive doesn't hold 6 TB anyway, you might just assume something like 5.98 TB for two nominal 6 TB drives in RAID 1. Keep in mind that RAID isn't free!! Not only is the capacity of the RAID array less than the combined capacity of the drives, there is also a performance hit because everything has to be written more than once and depending on which RAID (n) you choose, it may be split across several drives. Another consideration which I had not previously considered is the age of the drives. If you start with two identical drives, four years from now each of those drives will have been in service for, guess what, four years. If one of them fails, the other may not be long behind. Some folks (what we usually refer to as "THEY") would suggest a mix of drive ages. Your mileage may vary, as "they" say. :-) |
Question: | Has anyone used this nas with plex |
Answer: | I am going to buy the 4 bay version. If I can stream from Plex using 2 old Lenovo IX4-300D's than I am sure the ARMADA 388 1.6ghz chip will be fine for steaming from Plex. The Lenovo only has a 1.2ghz chip and ARMADA XP chip in it. |

Question: | Can I insert existing two hard drives from my old enclosure without formatting and loosing all the data on them |
Answer: | yes. if you selected the JBOD setting. |
Question: | If the "main" port is thunderbolt 3 compatible, does that mean if will give you tb3 speeds when connected to a tb3 device or just usb3.1 speeds |
Answer: | Hi, speeds are up to 10G. Keep in mind, the speed is limited by the hard drives. A spinning hard drive will not be able to reach TB3 speeds. Peak speed in RAID 0 will peak around 500 MB/sec. Thanks! Oyen Digital |

User questions & answers
Question: | Please purchase mounting hardware and cables separately if necessary. What do I need |
Answer: | You will need a mounting rail for the drive (with screws) to secure it in the computer, similar to http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Universal-Mounting-Bracket-BRACKET/dp/B0001UZQWG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791368&sr=1-2&keywords=hard+drive+mounting+rail+kita SATA cable to connect to your motherboard if you do not have an extra available, such as: http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-18-Inch-Locking-90-Degree-108783/dp/B009GUXU52/ref=pd_sim_pc_23?ie=UTF8&refRID=1039H3T1A80RRZ6K7P7H,and an available power plug or Y-cable (the white 4 pin or 6-pin) depending on what power cables your computer has, again depending on whether your computer has an extra alreadyhttp://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-PYO2SATA-Power-Splitter-Adapter/dp/B002N2EHVQ/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791237&sr=1-4&keywords=computer+power+y+cableorhttp://www.amazon.com/Computer-Molex-Power-Supply-Splitter/dp/B001PI9AAC/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791237&sr=1-3&keywords=computer+power+y+cableYour computer may already have a full width cable internally, in which case it will provide both power and communication |
Question: | Is everything I need to install this drive in my desktop included in the package |
Answer: | It only includes the drive. You have to make sure you have a SATA cable available. You also need screws, but it depends on your PC. Many new PC's do not use screws anymore. Instead they you reataining clips and brackets. On the otherhand, if you are replacing a bad drive, then you can just swap this one in its place. |
Question: | Why is this particular model about one-half the price of the following model |
Answer: | Buyer's beware! The Western Digital website blog is full of complaints on the current 1TB Black Drive . People with the software to test them have found that the new 1TB WD Black is a restickered WD Blue: a single platter with the performance and latency of the 1TB WD Blue. The 2TB, 3TB and 4TB WD Blacks have 3, 4 and 5 platters, not just one and look nothing like the 1TB Black which looks like a WD Blue clone. WD's blog manager is arguing that it "meets the specification" which has conveniently been neglected by WD and their vendors to list (but not on NewEgg which has the throughput of the1TB WD Black listed on a WD round up of the Black Series. Customers are saying they do NOT meet their expectation and that the extended warranty is not a comfort since what they wanted was a "high-performance" drive, not a reduced performance drive with better endurance.I would want to see a drive that looked like its family, not like another product line. Read the comments before you buy, then decide what you want to do. |
Question: | So many of these reviews say the drives are old (pass their 5 year warranty). Is this true |
Answer: | You Get A warranty for 5 years no matter what as far as the age of these drives i have no idea but that does not matter since you get a 5 year warranty no matter what and they are great drives they offer great performance definitely worth the price get this drive for your laptop you wont be disappointed |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this drive smr if so i don't want it |
Answer: | No, it’s not. All Ironwolf and Itonwolf pro drives are SMR free, according to Seagate |
Question: | Does any one know a case where 3 could fit inside |
Answer: | I have 3 of these in a Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS918+ works great! |
Question: | I purchased (2) 12-tb: anyone knows why i get 10.91-tb for each? why are we short |
Answer: | manufacturer considers 1 Megabyte to be 1000 Kilobytes, 1 Gigabyte to be 1000 Megabytes, 1 Terabyte to be 1000 Gigabytes and so on. This is correct considering that kilo means 1000 and mega means 1000000 (10^6). However, computers calculate on base 2 and to them, 1 MB is actually 1024 kilobytes, 1GB is 1024MB and 1 TB is 1024GB. This difference in the method of computation is responsible for this "missing space." Let's take an example of a 500 GB hard disk. From a manufacturer's point of view, the 500GB will have 500*1000*1000*1000 = 500000000000 bytes. From a computer's point of view, 500GB is actually 500*1024*1024*1024 = 536870912000 bytes. So, a hard drive that promises to have 500 GB storage space will actually display 465.66GB, 536870912000-500000000000 = 36870912000 bytes (34.34GB) less storage space when connected to a computer. This is true of every drive you buy |
Question: | Can this be used as a normal hdd storage drive for a desktop pc |
Answer: | I have two NAS drives in my computer, and they work great. I bought two easystore external hard drives and removed the hard hard drives from the case. The hard drives are 5400 rpm drives. I only archive things on those drives, and they work great. The 7200 rpm drives are better for gaming but more expensive. The easystores only costed me $150. They also have a 256mb cache. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with the power adapter |
Answer: | Yes ma'am that is exactly why I bought this cable to transfer from hard drive to hard drive (20gb to 150gb) for the same Xbox 360. this is exactly what you are looking for :) merry Christmas |
Question: | Is this compatabible with the ps |
Answer: | Sure, you have to connect the new drive to the Xbox 360, then you turn on the console, and the assitant appears after login, then the assistant itself guides you in this operation is very easy. One thing the process erases the content of the old disk. |
Question: | Will this work with a system that only has USB2.0 ports |
Answer: | usualy the PG read out should be between 100ms and 500ms. the PG being 70 means that the power good signal is being broadcast every 70ms if all the voltages are good the PSU should in theory still be suitable for use. the PG delay tells the computer that the power supply is still functioning properly at certain intervals and helps the emergency shutoff circuitry that is built in to motherboards to know when the powersupply has gone bad. |
Question: | which one is better? elements 8tb or my book 8tb |
Answer: | In other words, it does NOT support testing Watts. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am considering this enclosure to set up two 6 tb hard drives on raid 1. which would you recommend: western digital black, blue or red drives |
Answer: | All versions should work paired in the enclosure, but are rated for different applications. Black is the higher performance drive: Video work and higher access speeds at 7200rpm. Red is for long life in constant "trickle" streaming as in security, or for building a NAS, at 5400rpm. Blue is for general "consumer" storage applications at 5400rpm. There is also a Purple that is specified for security video use, but I usually use Reds for that application due to availability. |
Question: | If one drive fails, is it as easy as just pulling the failed drive and adding a new one if configured in Raid |
Answer: | Yes - though pulling involves powering the unit down and disassembling it, especially if the failed drive is in bay #1. It no longer matters which bay the new drive is in - the unit will rebuild to the empty drive. This is a huge improvement from their older RAID units where the good drive had to be in bay 1 because it copied from bay 1 to bay 2 no matter regardless of which was the empty drive. |
Question: | In raid 1, if one drive fail and after the failed drive is replaced, can this enclosure rebuild its raid 1 without being connected to the pc |
Answer: | Hello. This enclosure would need to be connected to a computer in order to properly power on and rebuild the RAID after a failure. |
Question: | Does this enclosure work with ssd (solid state drives |
Answer: | Hello! Yes this enclosure will work with SSD's. However they will not fit in the drive bays without the use of a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter Bracket. We recommend the Newertech Adaptadrive (found here: http://a.co/8beqOas) for situations like this. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use this HDD for desktop |
Answer: | does not cover ankles |
Question: | Can wd ultrastar be used in thinkstation. i heard hgst enterprise drive is incompatible for home desktop, and need to fix the 3.3v pin problem |
Answer: | I have no idea how to report problems with shipments. I'd like to know myself. The AMAZON carriers run hot and cold (mostly cold), leaving packages closer to the street than my front door and don't even bother to ring the door bell. Lazy arses. |
Question: | Does the 14tb drive have the power disable feature |
Answer: | My husband is 6'2" and weighs 250. 3X is very big and long. He likes it that way. I hope that helps. Have no idea what size a 44 would be. Sorry. Shirt is nice weight as well. |
Question: | Is the ultrstar 8tb drive warrantied by western digital and for how long |
Answer: | No, they run true to sizes listed. These shirts are the absolute best a shirt can be. I love them, and have been wearing them for at least 12 years. I now own at least 30 of them, and they are the only shirt I wear unless my wife says I need something different for some occasion. I have the long sleeve Henley’s for our Wisconsin winters and the short sleeves for our summers. In my opinion they are an 11 out of 10! Enjoy yours! |
