10 best hard discs
Hard disks, often referred to as hard drives or HDDs (Hard Disk Drives), are a type of data storage device commonly used in computers and other electronic devices. They are an integral part of computing, offering a means to store and access data. Here is an overview of hard disks:
Data Storage: Hard disks are used to store digital data such as documents, applications, media files, and the operating system of a computer or other electronic devices.
Physical Components: A typical hard disk drive consists of one or more metal platters coated with a magnetic material, read/write heads, an actuator arm, and a motor. The platters spin at high speeds, and data is read from or written to the platters by the read/write heads.
Capacity: Hard disks come in a wide range of capacities, from a few hundred gigabytes to multiple terabytes. Larger capacity drives are suitable for storing vast amounts of data, including multimedia content.
Types: There are two primary types of hard disks: internal and external. Internal hard disks are installed inside a computer or device, while external hard drives are standalone devices connected to a computer via USB, Thunderbolt, or other interfaces.
Speed: Hard disk drives are known for providing good storage capacity, but they are relatively slower compared to solid-state drives (SSDs). Data access speeds are affected by the rotational speed of the platters, typically measured in revolutions per minute (RPM).
Reliability: Hard disks are mechanical devices, and as such, they are susceptible to wear and tear. Over time, moving parts can fail, leading to data loss. To mitigate this risk, regular backups are crucial.
Use Cases: Hard disks are commonly used for data backup, archiving, and mass storage. External hard drives, in particular, are portable and make it easy to back up or transfer data.
Interface: Hard disks connect to computers and other devices through various interfaces, such as USB, SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment), Thunderbolt, or eSATA, depending on whether they are internal or external drives.
Power Source: External hard drives often require an external power source, while some portable models can draw power from the host device via the data connection.
Noise and Heat: Hard disk drives can generate noise and heat due to the spinning platters and moving components. This can be a consideration when choosing a hard disk for a specific use case.
Price: Hard disks are typically more affordable than solid-state drives when considering the cost per gigabyte of storage.
Evolving Technology: While hard disks remain relevant for bulk storage, solid-state drives have gained popularity for their speed and reliability. Many modern laptops and desktops use a combination of both HDDs for storage and SSDs for faster data access.
In summary, hard disks are essential storage devices used in computers and other electronics to store data. They come in various capacities and types, with both internal and external options available. While they offer ample storage capacity, they are slower and have moving parts, which can affect their longevity and reliability. As technology advances, solid-state drives (SSDs) are becoming increasingly popular for their speed and durability, especially for operating systems and frequently accessed data.

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the rotational speed of this hard drive? I'm asking because I don't see it listed here |
Answer: | It's 7200 |
Question: | What is the warranty |
Answer: | As other reviewers have mentioned, all Seagate drives sold on the Amazon Seagate page have no warranty of any kind. DO NOT BUY THESE DRIVES. |
Question: | This drive was made for datacenters. Can it be used in a regular pc as a separate drive besides the main drive containing the operating system |
Answer: | As long as you have a modern PC. It's typical SATA III interface. The only issue is with older PCs because you need a BIOS that can deal with GPT partitions. But really, if you have something that came out after around 2010 - 2012, the BIOS should be more modern. BIOS, being software/hardware = firmware that's involved with the basic functionality of the hardware that's part of the PC, which is what brings the PC up to the state of being able to load an operating system, such as Windows or Linux. |
Question: | Are these retail or oem? seagate won't warranty oem drives |
Answer: | I emailed them this question about the 8TB Seagate Exos 8TB Internal Hard drive, and at least they were honest. (saberPC). I chose not to waste my money on a 'questionable' 5 YEAR warranty from a company that may very well not be around in 5 years, and even if they are, a company with a 10% 'unsatisfied' customer raises some serious red flags. Better to spend an extra 50 bucks and get a real warranty from Seagate. 5 years is a LONG time. 'The Seagate hard drives that we are selling are OEM drives which are all brand new and sealed from the factory. The warranty is from us that we offer an industry standard 5-year warranty on all hard drives and we have been in business for over 12 years. So once the device is not working under the warranty, all you need to do is to email or call us, and provide us the serial no, and that is it. Please let us know if you still have questions! Best, SabrePC' |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I boot from this drive on a mac? In other words, is it bootable |
Answer: | Mounting the drive is easy on a Mac, unless it is NTFS or another format. Booting is not (realistically) possible. It's a backup drive and would be terrible and break fast anyway. Trust me, usb bootable drives are the wrong way to go. Get a thunderbolt 3 drive to boot from, those work significantly better. |
Question: | What cable will I need to get to connect this to a usb3 port |
Answer: | It comes with cable for either 2 or 3 |
Question: | is this drive's usb interface support usb |
Answer: | USB 3.0/3.1/3.2 is backward compatible with USB 2.0. USB 2.0 supports a lower power output, which may be insufficient for this drive, so if WD says a 3.0 port is required...it likely is. |
Question: | How is it different from other WD drives sold for |
Answer: | The 99 dollar models transfer on my computer at around 90 MB sec, bought this USB-c model without realizing it was different, only transfers at 35 MB sec on same computer, considerably slower for more money, stay away. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the 2tb (st2000dm008) internal hard drive cmr or smr |
Answer: | The 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB drives are all SMR, which means they are slow for random writes and not suitable as boot drives. (Google "Why SMR drives are sub-optimal for write-intensive workloads".) |
Question: | Is this really 7200rpm? the model number suggests otherwise |
Answer: | I got the ST4000DM004 which claims 7200 rpm on amazon and my computer is reporting it has a media rotation rate of 5425 rpm |
Question: | Is a sata cable included in the package |
Answer: | Cables not included. You can buy a SATA data cable and likely the appropriate power cable for your computer right here on Amazon. Depending on your power supply, the power cable may already be connected to it in your computer -- some have that and some do not. |
Question: | Is this 7200 or 5400rpm |
Answer: | Only the 1 TB (#ST1000DM010) and 2 TB (#ST2000DM008) models are 7200, all the larger models are 5400. Both the llisted speed and model number change in the product description as you pick different disk size options. This is consistent with Seagate's website -- From the home page, drill down through (or search for) Internal / Hard Drives / BarraCuda - Learn More, and then click the 3.5 inch models tab (NOT the 3.5 inch PRO models tab). Then click on the data sheet next to any model to get a PDF with a table containing all of the models along with their drive speeds and other specs.. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why is my 10tb drive saying it only has 8.73 tb of useable space? it should be roughly 9.3 tb |
Answer: | Yes I have this issue as well. When running a raid it will set up to A safe cache to a largers size due to all the drives. How many drives are you using? Check out the Manufacturer website. This is how I found why I was getting this as well. I'm running 5 drives in a Z2 config. |
Question: | What's the difference between st10000vn0008 and st10000vnz008/n |
Answer: | don't know... looks like someone had ambiguous or conflicting information |
Question: | Will it work for a MacBook Pro |
Answer: | I am not sure. These drives (RED label)work for NAS devices for a specific need. They good for video; photos and music storage. They are a bit more expensive. I honestly do not know why you want them for a macbook. Since you have the cash, buy an SSD drive instead. |
Question: | Why are the prices constantly changing |
Answer: | Stock and Demand for Materials change the price. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work with older macbook air models. i have an early 2014 mojave |
Answer: | This LaCie Drive works best with select MacBook models 2015-current. The operating system required to use this drive must be OS X v10.5 or later. We hope this helps answer any compatibility questions you may have. |
Question: | Can I use a usbc to usb |
Answer: | A USB 3.0 cable is included with the drive, and that can be connected to a USB 2.0 port on the computer, but that will of course greatly reduce performance if you choose to do so. |
Question: | can i have a new macbook pro. can i get either the thunderbolt usb-c or the usb-c |
Answer: | A USB-C hard drive is compatible with Thunderbolt 3 ports on a Mac, so this will work. Also works of course with USB-C ports, and older USB 3.0 ports using supplied cable. |
Question: | How does usbc differ from the thunderbolt usb-c option? i see thunderbolt usbc is more expensive |
Answer: | USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 share the same physical connection type (USB-C). USB-C devices can be connected to Thunderbolt 3 ports, as TB3 supports USB-C devices. However, TB3 drives cannot be connected to USB-C ports on computer. So, this USB-C drive will connect to USB-C ports, Thunderbolt 3 ports, or using included cable, USB 3.0/2.0 ports. |
Question: | Can I take the hard drive out and use it as a regular desktop hard drive |
Answer: | I’ve done this with about 30+ 2tb, 4tb, and 8tb drives over the years- converting an external to an internal- and they are all still running fine to this day. Usually $30-40 cheaper than the internal and you get a free usb cable to boot. Just make sure you don’t hurt your hands while doing it. Twisting a flathead screw driver in the seams seemed like the way to go if I recall. They don’t make the cases easy to open. For someone below: Don’t use these for RAID. NAS rated drives are different because they handle higher heat, able to run 24/7 with cross checks, etc. read more about what makes the iron version a NAS approved drive compared to the standard barracuda. |
Question: | will it work with a mac for time machine |
Answer: | Just reformatted the external hard drive using Disk Utility. Works for Mac :) Im not a tech savvy person, so I found this website to be useful when selecting what option to select when erasing the hard drive. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4276140?start=0&tstart=0I chose to use Journaled as I am using this for a Time Machine back up, like Matthew Chellew suggests in the first answer. |
Question: | Does it work well with an Xbox One |
Answer: | Like a charm, exactly what I purchased it for. Plug into any of the three ports (all 3 of the original XBox One ports are 3.0) and give it a minute. The XBox will recognize it and you have to choose for storage or media. Choose storage for games and you are up and running. Do be aware that this HDD does require its own power supply. I was transferring games within 5 minutes. FWIW within half an hour there was a power outage in the middle of a transfer and the external drive, the XBox One and the data are were ok when power came back on. If a data transfer is interrupted for any reason simply delete the failed portion on the destination drive and start the process over. |
Question: | What is the diference between Seagate 5TB usb 3 model numbers STEB5000100, STBV5000100 and STDT |
Answer: | The STBV is the older "Expansion" model with a lightly textured plastic case and slightly sloped front bezel. Sold only in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific with a 1-year, 2-year, or 3-year warranty, respectively. The STEB is the replacement "Expansion" model for the above with a more interesting texture and feet on one edge to stand vertically. It is sold in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific with a 1-year, 2-year, or 3-year warranty, respectively. The STDT is the "Backup Plus" model that looks like the STBV except with no sloped front and comes with backup software (on the disk) for both Windows and Mac OS, and includes 200GB of cloud storage with OneDrive for 2 years. It is sold in North America only with a 2-year warranty. The STDT comes in capacities of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8TB. The STEB and STBV go up to 5TB.They all use the same SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface. I suspect the internal drives have small differences and firmware, but I can find no information about that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used for hd or 4k streaming as a nas when connected to a good router like asus 87u or 5300? has anybody tried playing 4k movies off it |
Answer: | It is certain fast enough when connected to a USB 3.0 device. It take only a few second per gigabyte. Unlike the other Wong Sze Cheong 's claims mine is not noisy at all since it has NO fan. The must be using another HD next to this one. Streaming is LOW HD use. A few MB, not 100+ MB like the drive isd capable of doing. I would IGNORE Wong Sze Cheong's evaluation. I have no idea how a fanless HS can be noisy. I have a SSHD in a fan case and it IS noisy unlike this one. My laptop is MUCH noisier when it does run it fan. |
Question: | Can i hook up 2 different windows machines and can they both (for back up) accessed? as in running 2 different backups at different times |
Answer: | +derkalakader. This unit plugs into a USB port on your computer. The two ports on the front of the unit gives you back that port you used, plus one extra. Very handy on a laptop that only has one or two to start with. But to use it on two different computers, you need to do it on the network or just unplug it from one and plug it into the other. Or others. 4TB is a lot of room. I have 4 different laptops backed up on one 500 GIG. drive. But then I have another one that is used for Karaoke, and it uses a 500Gig. drive for back up all by itself. So it depends on what you are backing up. |
Question: | Any idea what is the power rating of this external drive? and also the power adaptor |
Answer: | It doesn't get enough power, I'll say that. This drive grinded to a halt on me after 7 months. Sold and shipped brand new from Amazon. |
Question: | can I use it as extra space on a airport |
Answer: | Yes, you should be able to connect this to your Apple Airport Base Station to give you extra network attached storage. |
