A TV card for a computer, also known as a TV tuner card or capture card, is a hardware component that allows a computer to receive, decode, and display television signals. These cards have various applications and features, making them useful for a range of tasks related to TV and video content. Here's what you should know about TV cards for computers:

  1. Types of TV Cards:

    • Internal TV Tuner Cards: These cards are installed inside a computer's case and connect to the motherboard. They often come with a coaxial input to connect to a cable or antenna source.
    • External Capture Cards: External TV tuner or capture cards connect to a computer via USB, Thunderbolt, or another external port. They are suitable for laptops and desktops that lack internal expansion slots.
  2. TV Reception: TV tuner cards can receive various types of TV signals, including analog (older systems), digital terrestrial (over-the-air broadcasts), and digital cable or satellite signals. The type of reception depends on the card's capabilities and your location.

  3. Recording and Time-Shifting: TV tuner cards often come with recording capabilities, allowing you to record TV shows, movies, or other broadcasts directly to your computer's hard drive. Time-shifting features let you pause, rewind, and fast-forward live TV.

  4. Software: These cards are typically bundled with software that provides a user-friendly interface for viewing and recording TV content. Some software also includes features like electronic program guides (EPGs).

  5. Video Capture: TV tuner cards can be used to capture video from other sources, such as VCRs, camcorders, and gaming consoles, making them versatile tools for content creation and editing.

  6. Digital TV Standards: In regions where digital TV broadcasting is prevalent, TV tuner cards often support standards like ATSC (North America), DVB-T/T2 (Europe), or ISDB-T (Japan).

  7. Analog Support: Older TV tuner cards may still support analog signals (NTSC, PAL), although analog TV broadcasting is becoming less common.

  8. HD and 4K Support: Many modern TV tuner cards support high-definition (HD) and even 4K resolution, providing excellent picture quality.

  9. Connectivity: TV tuner cards may include additional inputs and outputs, such as HDMI, composite, S-video, and component connections, to accommodate a variety of audio and video sources.

  10. Compatibility: When purchasing a TV tuner card, it's important to ensure compatibility with your computer's operating system and hardware specifications.

  11. Antenna and Cable Connections: You'll need an appropriate antenna or cable connection to receive TV signals. The type of antenna or cable service you have may affect the channels you can access.

In summary, TV cards for computers are hardware components that enable a computer to receive, record, and display TV signals. They come in various types, offer different features, and support various TV standards. These cards are useful for watching, recording, and editing TV content on your computer, as well as capturing video from other sources.

User questions & answers

Question: All i want is to plug an antenna into my pc and watch the local network affiliates on it. is this what i need to do that
Answer: It should work with any USB connection. I've used mine on my custom built tower which has USB 3.0 ports and my Sony Vaio laptop in both the 2.0 and 3.0 ports.
Question: How many integrated tuners
Answer: The length of the cable is 8" from the end of the hub to the end of the usb plug. I think some of the confusion comes from the multiple device listings on the same page. I believe the one I bought had a promo code and was the base model. That one comes as the hub alone. If you look closely, the other ones are listed with a 3 foot USB extension cable. It all depends what you are looking for. In my case I didn't need the extra 3' of cable laying on my desk. It worked fine for my older laptop with one USB 3.0 plug. Mine did not lose connection however as another customer had experienced. Hope this helps you out there and sorry for the delay in answering.
Question: windows media player was no longer supported by microsoft for the program guide... does hauppauge have software that provides the guide
Answer: The previous shorter cable version has run out of stock already and we really regret to inform you that it won't be restocked in our Amazon store temporarily. Best regards, UNITEK Customer Service
Question: When you record TV show with Win Media Center it saves the file as type .wtv. What file type Hauppauge software save the TV show in
Answer: Sorry. No I don't. However, as the tiny light is used primarily to indicate that there is power to the Unitek and you are still able to use your USB ports, I wouldn't worry about the loss of the light.

User questions & answers

Question: can you plug this straight into a cable line coming into your house
Answer: Only if it is attached to an antenna. If it is a line with "cable" service this is the wrong tuner card for you. You need one that has a tuner for "cable" channels, not just ATSC over the air channels. Hauppauge has cards with both. The part number usually has an "H" in them and you'll see two F-connectors on the card, one for an antenna for ATSC over the air channels, one for cable channels. An old card, that had this was WINTV-HVR1600. It is so old it is ISA, not PCI.
Question: If i do not have cable, what more do i need to buy to access local stations (abc, nbc, cbs
Answer: an antenna, big enough to receive your local stations (depending on your distance from their transmission point, obstacles in the way, and height that you can mount antenna (22 -24 feet is preferred)), probably will need in line amplifier depending on the distance between your antenna and your computer (if greater than 25-50 feet), and you should already have Windows Media Center installed. When you upgrade to Windows 10, you can use the Hauppauge WinTV8 software instead of WMC.
Question: Are there Linux drivers
Answer: It is my understanding that Hauppauge drivers are included with many Linux versions (distros). I am curently running Linux Mint 19.3 with Hauppauge 2250 pci internal card. If you run dmesg in your terminal window you should see something similar to: [ 13.684556] saa7164 0000:06:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002) [ 13.684691] CORE saa7164[0]: subsystem: 0070:8851, board: Hauppauge WinTV-HVR2250 [card=7,autodetected] [ 13.684694] saa7164[0]/0: found at 0000:06:00.0, rev: 129, irq: 18, latency: 0, mmio: 0xfd800000 [ 13.881484] saa7164_downloadfirmware() no first image [ 13.881496] saa7164_downloadfirmware() Waiting for firmware upload (NXP7164-2010-03-10.1.fw) [ 14.049710] saa7164_downloadfirmware() firmware read 4019072 bytes. Question: Has anyone folund a similar replacement for windows medias center to record programs
Answer: Old question, but I'll answer anyway. When I could no longer run Windows Media Center, I could only find one product that offered the same functionality as WMC, specifically the ability to have a movies only guide. And that product is J River Media Center. It is as good as or better than WMC, although it take more effort to configure it for some functionality. And it records into the TS format, which can be played on practically any media play, such as Roku, Fire TV, Shield, or any of the inexpensive Android boxes. It's not free, but it's not really that expensive.
