Answer:	USB 3.0 by its very nature is backward compatible with USB 2.0. I have had no trouble so far with either type of external hard drive plugged in to the USB 3.0 ports. However, I haven't actually clocked how fast each is transferring data files. One thing I did find out: This card is not supposed to be compatible with Ubuntu 14.04, but I've gotten devices to work just fine so long as they are plugged directly into the USB ports on the card itself, not the connector that plugs into USB ports at the front of the computer. They might be running at USB 2.0 speeds and compatibility in Ubuntu, I don't know for sure.
