10 best vhf antennas
VHF antennas, or Very High Frequency antennas, are a type of radio communication antenna designed to operate within the VHF frequency range, which typically spans from 30 MHz to 300 MHz. These antennas are commonly used in various applications, including marine electronics, car and vehicle electronics, and other communication systems. Here are some key points about VHF antennas:
Frequency Range: VHF antennas operate within the VHF frequency band, which is known for its ability to transmit and receive signals over relatively long distances compared to UHF (Ultra High Frequency) and other higher-frequency bands. VHF frequencies are commonly used for two-way radio communication.
Marine Antennas: In the context of marine electronics, VHF antennas are often used for communication between vessels, marinas, and coastguards. They are crucial for safety at sea, as they enable communication for emergencies, weather updates, and navigation.
Car and Vehicle Electronics: VHF antennas are also utilized in car and vehicle electronics, primarily for communication purposes. They are commonly found on public safety vehicles, such as police cars and ambulances, as well as on commercial vehicles like trucks and buses. VHF radios in vehicles are used for communication with dispatch centers and other vehicles.
Antenna Types: VHF antennas come in various designs, including whip antennas, fiberglass antennas, and yagi antennas. The choice of antenna type depends on the specific application and requirements, such as the desired range and directionality of the signal.
Installation: Proper installation of VHF antennas is crucial for optimal performance. They need to be mounted at the correct height and location to ensure unobstructed line-of-sight communication. On boats, for example, marine VHF antennas are often mounted on the mast or other high points.
Coaxial Cable: VHF antennas are connected to the radio or communication equipment through coaxial cables. The quality and length of the coaxial cable can impact signal strength and clarity, so it's important to choose the appropriate cable for your setup.
Regulations: The use of VHF frequencies is regulated by government authorities to prevent interference and ensure efficient communication. Users are typically required to obtain a license or permit for VHF radios, especially in marine and certain vehicle applications.
Emergency Communication: VHF radios and antennas play a critical role in emergency situations, allowing for rapid communication with authorities or nearby vessels. They are equipped with dedicated emergency channels to facilitate distress calls.
In summary, VHF antennas are essential components of communication systems in various domains, including marine and vehicle electronics. They enable reliable, long-range communication and are particularly vital for safety and emergency situations. Proper installation and adherence to regulations are important factors in ensuring the effectiveness of VHF antennas.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work with a uniden um380bk |
Answer: | Yes it will. |
Question: | Does it work as FM antenna with the combination adapter |
Answer: | Yes you can buy a splitter for your FM reception needs |
Question: | why does this antenna require a battery |
Answer: | It does not require a battery. The description is wrong. |
Question: | Can this antenna be used on a gmrs radio |
Answer: | I am amateur radio operator N8VJM. I use antennas like this one and its "Big Brother" the 8' (co-phase) version. They tune up well enough to be used on 2 m (144-148 MHz Amateur Radio Band) a-well-as on 70 cm (420–450 MHz Amateur Radio Band). I run up to 50 watts without damaging the finals in my transceivers and more power with external amplifiers. GMRS and FRS have many channels at power levels of 5 w and lower, but some are as high as 50 w. Don't be fooled by thinking that SWR readings are an accurate measure of how useful an antenna and transmission line system are. The gain you achieve with a 46" antenna (in this case) should far outweigh the losses of the mismatch (as shown by higher-than-normal SWR) versus a 6.3" plain whip intended for GMRS/FRS use. I don't gamble, but I would be willing to bet money that people in-the-know (experienced radio operators, techs, and engineers) are using similar antennas successfully. The seller cannot recommend that you try using this antenna OOB (out-of-band) because they would then be liable if it didn't work well for you or damaged your equipment. You might even try a split ferrite bead about 6 or 7 inches down the coax from the antenna. It should serve to lower your SWR to protect your finals and may even improve performance. Bottom line, this is a $40-something antenna. I think you can probably shell out that much for an experiment. Worse case scenario, sell it on eBay for just about what you paid for it (if it doesn't work well for you). |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this directly replace my broken 5206 C |
Answer: | This will work with almost any VHF Marine Radio. You will need to know how to follow directions when shortening cable, if necessary, or attaching the terminal fitting. Should be no problem instructions available. |
Question: | Is the PL-259 connector attached, or separate (solder or crimp?) to allow for easy cable routing |
Answer: | Separate. Why would you want the connector attached? That would require a huge hole to pass-through. The instructions are clear and installing the connector is easy.BTW, I have a 23' runabout and the 8 ft mast is overkill, the 4' would have been just fine. |
Question: | Can I get a mount that doesn't have the swivel .i mean just fixed straight up ,on a flat surface |
Answer: | Yes. The antenna doesn't come with the mount. It is a standard attachment, so it should attach to most antenna mounts. Here is one on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Style-Marine-Mount-Antenna-Radar/dp/B000S5VBG4/ref=sr_1_2?s=boating-water-sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1404392614&sr=1-2&keywords=marine+antenna+mount |
Question: | Is this antenna telescoping? It looks like it is, but just cannot tell for sure |
Answer: | No it is one piece. It is just a horrible picture that makes it look like it is telescoping. It is smooth and straight. I get great reception with it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Stations are NE and SE of me. Don't want to mess with a rotator. Could I mount two in an attic, 1 each facing NE and SE and combine signal |
Answer: | I did it, 60 mile away from two "hubs" couple station not in directional signal. Rotation will bring them in. usualy leave one spot get both areas 50+ channels |
Question: | Is this a multi-directional antenna or will I have to go adjust the angle on it if I want to pick up channels from 360 degrees around me |
Answer: | Based on what I was taught in electronic communications class and the appearance of this antenna, UHF has a reflector and VHF has a single dipole. I would expect about a 45 degree beam width UHF and a figure eight pattern for VHF. If I am right, you will have to adjust it for 360 degrees. I have never seen a 360 degree TV antenna except a short range vertical rod on a portable. |
Question: | Do you need a pre amplifier with this antenna |
Answer: | No sir. We live 28 miles E/SE from Atlanta Ga. and get 25 channels with all the sub-channels along with them. I am using a Winegard LNA-200 along with a Yagi style Winegard antenna only because of the 130-foot coax cable length from the antenna to our OTA tuner down in our basement media room. Every 15 to 20 feet of coax run you use you get a drop of 1DB of antenna signal. Check this our:Size, Compatibility & Features Dimensions: 6″ x 4″ x 4.8″ TwinAmp Technology™ separately amplifies VHF and UHF signals 10x more power handling Bandpass filters remove interfering RF signals Installs on any outdoor non-amplified TV antenna Maximum Gain (typical): 18 dB Noise Figure (typical): 1dB Power: +5V at 130mA |
Question: | Is anyone able to provide feedback on how this antenna works in a mountainous region 40 miles from transmitters |
Answer: | I'm using this antenna in a remote, hilly, wooded area 49 miles from the main towers where they say reception is impossible. Most locals have huge big towers for their antennas. This is a retreat cabin and not our main home. We would have been happy to get one or two stations. We get about a dozen. We are thrilled with this antenna. We have friends with a similar setup and they bought the antenna on our recommendation. Same results and they're thrilled. Note: We both tried a preamp of the correct size for the antenna and it made the reception bad. Works fine for us without a preamp and as-is right out of the box. Of course, we both are only running 50' of cable with no splitters so if you're running 100' or more of cable and trying to feed 2-3 tv's, you would probably benefit from a preamp.Anyway, that's our experience. Yours may vary but worth a try. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the length of the cable |
Answer: | I just unpacked my Shakespeare 5104 (4 foot) antenna. The cable measured exactly 15 ft. 8 inches from the base of the antenna. |
Question: | What is the range of the antenna |
Answer: | The range of this antenna is the full vhf marine band...156-158 MHz. Plus marine wx. 162 MHz. |
Question: | Please list the maximum receiving distance of this antenna |
Answer: | Your transmit and receive ranges will vary according to the height above the water that you mount your antenna, and the height of the receiving antenna. VHF is line of sight transmit & receive, so for boat to boat probably about 3-5 miles unless one of the boats has a very tall antenna, then it would be further. |
Question: | Can I mount this antenna to my mast |
Answer: | Earl, I would buy the TRAM 1600-HC 35 antenna or similar model. The 5104 screws on to a base that may be difficult to mount on a mast. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the retractable version good or bad? There's a lot of mixed reviews |
Answer: | The antenna I receuved was not a retractable, the one I have works superbly! The non retractable one is very limber, it will stand straight up and down but it's not so stiff that you it won't flex quite a bit. I feel any retractable antenna would diminish the value of using an antenna like this one. If you need a short antenna, then buy a short antenna, they are cheap and I have multiple antennas for multiple situations. If I'm working a festival with base station close, I run a short rubber duck, if I'm mobile/driving and will be far from a repeater or using simplex. I use this. I would recommend you buy a non retractable. |
Question: | Is it safe to transmit with the antenna fully retracted? Can it harm the radio |
Answer: | NO! The equation for an antenna length is: 2808/frequency=length in inches As stated by the Mfg: "When you are only receiving and not transmitting you can conveniently retract the antenna down to only 4 inches." So the only frequency that has a SWR of 1:1 is around 700 Mhz. If you increase the length up to about 6.3" than you could Tx at: 440 Mhz but that's it. You need to increase the length up to 12.7" for 220 Mhz. You need to increase all the way to the 16" mark for 175 Mhz. But that's not going to get you under the 3:1 SWR you will need for 2M at 146 Mhz. For that you need to get to a length of 19.2". So for all practical purposes this antenna is not suitable for Ham radio TX. Or even the MARS applications at the 150's Mhz range. |
Question: | is their a better antenna than this one |
Answer: | As a whip? Not really. Other types; then yes. A Nelson Slim Jim is my favorite. String it up a tree 10' high and i can hit a repeater 60 miles away on 8W with a 5-9 (thats perfect) come back. With this 771 whip, i can hit a repeater 30 miles away with same results... But think of it as I live in florida and the higher the antenna, the better (less trees and buildings interfering). A beam antenna will concentrate signals one direction. My 3 el handi is what i use to pick up AMSAT chatter. So the word "best" is purely up to the task. I have this antenna on my UV-5RTP unless im backpacking or tracking. Compared to all whips, this one is my favorite. Get it. |
Question: | Amazon says it has a max power of 10w but Baofeng has it at 5w. which is correct |
Answer: | BOTH ARE CORRECT. The BaoFeng radio puts out 5 watts maximum. This antenna is capable of handling up to 10 watts maximum. Your BaoFeng radio will still be transmitting at 5 watts, but if you ever chose to connect this antenna to some other radio that produced up to a 10 watt signal, it would still work. Any higher and you would fry the radio. |

Extend the Range of Your Communication
Most Nagoya antennas will increase your radio's transmitting gain compared to their factory antenna.
In most cases: the longer the antenna is the better the antenna is capable of boosting weak frequencies and receiving difficult to hear stations. Shorter antennas offer more portability and convenience, while longer antennas generally perform better.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this antenna be mounted to the Firestick molded fender mount |
Answer: | It does contain Stevia and has a slight Stevia taste. I wouldn’t say it is a strong taste, and I’m very sensitive to the taste of sweeteners. |
Question: | Does the antenna unscrew from base? Be nice if it was removable with out having to remove bracket for boat storage with top down |
Answer: | Yes, this is a very relaxing brew. Enjoy. |
Question: | Does this item come with any length of cable for attaching to the radio |
Answer: | I received 1 box, which had 16 tea box. They shipped Detox, supports liver and kidney per description, not Skin Detox in image. |
Question: | what connector do you need to connect this to coaxial cable |
Answer: | It means there are 3 boxes of 16 tea bags; therefore, there’s a total of 48 tea bags. |
Question: | can i use it for both my vhf and am/fm radio can i split it or do i need separate antennas and will this one work on am/fm |
Answer: | Dear Customer,We sell products on amazon site as single quantity and not in bulk. The price is for one box of 16 tea bags. thank you for bringing this to our attention and we have forwarded this to our IT Personnel for corrective action. Thank you and have a great day.DrVita Customer Service |
Question: | Is the PL-259 already connected or do I have to splice it onto the cable |
Answer: | No sugar at all.! |
Question: | What is the range on this antenna |
Answer: | Yes, caffeine free |
Question: | Does this antenna have the comnector on the bottom. Becuase my mount has the wire intergrated in it. Thanks |
Answer: | It takes one HDMI input, and turns it in to four identical HDMI outputs. It is a rock-solid unit that works flawlessly. If your laptop has an HDMI output for connecting an external screen this should work perfectly. You can have up to four HDMI monitors or TV's all showing exactly what you see on the laptop screen (once you enable the external screen using e.g. Windows display management or the appropriate function key). Or if you "extend" your display, telling the laptop you want to spread your windows across two screens, then what the laptop thinks should be on the second screen will be duplicated on your (up to) four monitors ... the four will all be identical. |

Question: | does this antenna come with coxial cable |
Answer: | Yes. The antenna comes with 15' of white RG58 coax cable. |
Question: | What type of mount comes with it, i have a pontoon and I'm looking to mount it on a side rail or bimini top rail |
Answer: | It is rail mount capable |
Question: | Does this work for am/fm boat stereo receiver |
Answer: | No, this antenna is designed to work in 156.650-157.425MHz range. |
Question: | What's the length of this antenna? I read 36 inches on product details |
Answer: | It can't be 6dB gain, that's not possible in 36 inch height, sorry :(. The reason is that at 36 inches it's just at 1/2 wavelength, and that makes it equal to a dipole, which is 2.14dB gain (over full spherical isotropic). But, at 36 inches tall it's a nice size to be able to put in locations that 8ft antennas won't fit, like maybe higher up thus getting it's 2.14dB gain up higher above the water. Actually, this antenna placed about 6ft above the water will work better than an 8ft antenna with a base closer to the water. Hope this helps. |
