Answer:	I have an otterbox symmetry I believe. It's a really thin case and it works just fine. You just have to zoom in a little bit on your phone then focus with the scope. I also use the attachment that comes with it on my binoculars and even rifle scope. It works great.

Answer:	What kind of zoom does your phone have: digital or optical? If your smartphone camera's 8x magnification is from digital zoom, then you can multiply that by the 12x optical magnification of this spotting scope to get a total magnification of 96x. If your smartphone's 8x magnification is from optical zoom, with an actual zoom lens that sticks out from the camera, then you wouldn't be able to use it with the spotting scope's adapter bracket due to physical limitations of space. You'd have to handhold your phone in front of the scope's eyepiece to give the zoom lens room to move. Even then, I'm not sure how well the camera's optics would work with the scope's optics at full zoom.
