Answer:	On flat or mostly even ground, you don't. If you want to do any kind of panning you will need to hold it.
Question:	How does this compare to the carbon fiber version
Answer:	I have used this monopod for years through multiple NFL and MLB seasons with a Canon EOS 1D body and a 400mm 2.8 lens, the older heavier model, not the newer lighter ones. I have had mine since 2014 and it has only been this year that I have started to wear our the rubber foot.
Question:	Several reviewers mentioned that you can't pan with one hand using a handle. But since it is a monopod, can I twist the whole tripod around to pan
Answer:	There is a rubber foot on the monopod, but if you turn the foot clockwise a metal spike is exposed for rough terrain. Counterclockwise and the spike is hidden, but the rubber foot does not screw off.
Question:	What is the length closed
Answer:	Yes, get the Manfrotto 234RC Monopod Head Quick Release. Hard to put in words how handy it is with monopod. I have a fancy ballhead but they are near useless on monopod. The 234RC is fairly cheap, allows on and off camera pretty fast and tilts the way you need it. Remember the monopod can also be tilted as needed along with the 234RC and often you can brace yourself against a wall or tree, etc. Ballheads of monopods are useless because the monopod is always moving in two or three axis except when you hold steady for a shot.
Question:	Do I need to secure the camera with one hand all the time
Answer:	61" from the mounting plate to the foot (spike not extended). I used it recently as a walking staff on a a tough hike with 2000 vertical feet of elevation change over very rough terrain. It functioned perfectly as a staff and a monopod. Bullet proof ,IMHO.
