4 best wide angle lenses
Wide-angle lenses are a type of camera lens commonly used in photography to capture a broader field of view compared to standard or telephoto lenses. They are popular for a variety of photographic applications, including landscape photography, architectural photography, and street photography, among others. Here are some key characteristics and information about wide-angle lenses:
Focal Length: Wide-angle lenses typically have a shorter focal length, typically between 14mm to 35mm for full-frame cameras. This shorter focal length allows them to capture a wider perspective.
Field of View: Wide-angle lenses have a wide field of view, which means they can capture more of the scene in a single frame. This is advantageous for shooting expansive landscapes or fitting in a large group of people in a single shot.
Distortion: Wide-angle lenses can exhibit distortion, particularly at the edges of the frame. This distortion can manifest as barrel distortion (where straight lines appear curved outward) or pincushion distortion (where straight lines appear curved inward). However, modern wide-angle lenses often come with built-in corrections to minimize this distortion.
Perspective: Wide-angle lenses can exaggerate the sense of depth in a photo. Objects close to the lens appear larger, while those farther away seem smaller. This effect can be creatively used for dramatic and impactful compositions.
Low Light Performance: Some wide-angle lenses have wider apertures (e.g., f/2.8 or wider), making them suitable for low-light conditions and achieving a shallow depth of field.
Use Cases: Wide-angle lenses are commonly used for various photography genres:
- Landscape Photography: Wide angles are excellent for capturing sweeping landscapes with dramatic skies and foreground elements.
- Architectural Photography: These lenses help photographers capture entire buildings or interiors without the need for extensive cropping.
- Street Photography: Wide-angle lenses can be used to immerse viewers in the environment and capture candid moments in crowded urban settings.
- Astrophotography: Some wide-angle lenses are favored by astrophotographers for capturing the night sky, including stars, the Milky Way, and other celestial objects.
Zoom vs. Prime: Wide-angle lenses are available in both zoom and prime (fixed focal length) varieties. Zoom lenses offer versatility, allowing you to change the composition without changing the lens. Prime lenses often have wider apertures and may provide better image quality.
Lens Distortion Correction: Many modern cameras and post-processing software can automatically correct distortion caused by wide-angle lenses, helping to produce more accurate and visually pleasing images.
In summary, wide-angle lenses are a valuable tool in a photographer's kit, allowing them to capture expansive scenes and create dynamic compositions. While they come with certain challenges like distortion, they offer unique creative possibilities and are essential for specific photography genres.

Less compromises are involved when a lens can be designed for optimal performance for a specific focal length.
They don't have to overcome all of the additional problems encountered with the extra glass and mechanics required to zoom.
With their typically faster (wider) maximum apertures and fewer lens elements, primes can also gather and pass through more light.
As a result, even in poor lighting conditions, you can generally get better quality images and videos.
Additionally, due to their smaller size and weight, they are perfect for travel, and stealthy street shooting.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use this lens for landscape photography? I have canon 80d |
Answer: | I use it for landscape as well as everything else. It has become my go to lens. |
Question: | Does this fit the Canon 90D? It keep's saying "cannot confirm fit |
Answer: | Yes, it fit. It is an EF lens and all EF and EF-s lenses will fit on your 90D. |
Question: | Does it work with canon xsi |
Answer: | Yes. All Canon EF lenses work with the Xsi. |
Question: | Loved mkii then switched to sony a7ii. thinking of coming back to canon. if shooting raw and correct distortion/vignetting in post, reason to get iii |
Answer: | (Answer assumes you will be using a Full Frame camera) The III is an incremental upgrade over the II. It has better overall sharpness edge to edge, at all levels of zoom and aperture. It is 2000 USD though, and to be honest, unless you have a specific need to shoot F2.8 on a angle as wide as this, is a bit excessive. If you still have your MkII, then that money would be better spent on lenses you don't already have that can add more depth to your bag. Some good ones that come to mind in that price range are as follows... EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS II USM - Probably the best zoom lens Canon makes, and is good for a wide variety of uses. Portraits, low light action, low light anything, nature, it's jsut so good. EF 85mm F1.2L II USM - Canon's hotly desired lens for portraits, but often passed over for it's price. I only put it here as you seem to be ok with spending 2000 on a lens. If you want to do a lot of portraits, consider it. EF 24-70mm F2.8L II USM - Would be a better choice for low light action, since it has much less distortion, and is good for general use. Also, the latest Tamron G2 version is pretty impressive for 1200. Any combo of 1000 dollar lenses or less - 2000 dollars is a lot to drop on a lens, especially one that I think is not fully utilized most the time. The F2.8 aperture is the main reason this lens is 2 grand. And that is really only useful for fast action in low light (not at all common for wide angles), or for astrophotography (and there are less expensive lenses that work as well or better). If this is going to be used mostly for landscapes and other common wide shots, then you aren't even going to shoot at F2.8 most the time. Why not go for the F4 IS version instead, for half the price? Another very sharp lens (rivals the III), and I personally think it is the best wide angle in Canon's lineup for full frame cameras. |
