Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G Full-frame Large-aperture Ultra-wide Angle G Lens

This ultra-wide 20mm prime G Lens offers outstanding corner-to-corner sharpness with a fast F1.8 max. aperture, making it ideal for a wide variety of scenarios like landscape, street, starry-nights and environmental portraits. Furthermore, the XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear focus motorstrack focus flawlessly. The features and lightweight design make this lens ideal for videographers and vloggers as well.

Advanced Optical Performance

A state-of-the-art optical design with two AA (advanced aspherical) elements and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements accurately reproduces point light sources with high contrast and an absolute minimum of sagittal flare for crisp, clear images of challenging subjects such as night scenes and starry skies. The Nano AR coating suppresses reflections, flare and ghosting, while the fluorine coating on the front lens element repels water, oil, and other contaminantsfor sharp, clear images.

Beautiful, natural - looking bokeh

The deep, beautiful bokeh available with a max. F1.8 aperture is enhanced by a 9-blade circular aperture mechanism and precise control of spherical aberration characteristics that influence the defocused background quality. The FE 20mm F1.8 G lens delivers the type of smooth, natural-looking bokeh that discerning users have come to expect from a G Lens.

Two A A ( Advanced Aspherical) lens element

The 20mm F1.8G lens employs two precision AA (Advanced Aspherical) elements to maximize resolution and effectively compensates for field curvature and astigmatism that can be problematic in wide-angle lenses, achieving high corner-to-corner resolution even with the narrow depth-of-field produced at the lens’s maximum F1.8 aperture.

Three ED glass elements

Three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements significantly reducing flare and ghostingby taking axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration(due to differences in magnification)out of the picture. Resolution and bokeh is maximized while leaving precisely rendered edges with no fringing or unnatural colorationright out to the image edges.

F1. 8 max aperture

The F1.8max aperture maintains exposure and depth of field, allowing you to isolate your subject from the foreground and background with amazing light gathering capabilities when shooting wide open. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the areasout of the focal plane appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background is enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens.

XD Linear Motors for fast, precise, quiet focusing

The FE 20mm F1.8 G lens incorporates a precision internal focus mechanismconsisting of two XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors that easily keep up with the high-speed capabilities of today’s most advanced camera bodies, taking advantage of their full autofocus speed, precision, and tracking potential to capture the most dynamic subjects. New control algorithms make it possible to drive the lens’s focus group smoothly and without delays for responsive, silent, low-vibration and continuous autofocusin both still and video modes.

Nano AR coating suppresses reflections, flare and ghosting

Flare and ghosting are often hard to avoid when shooting landscapes or outdoor scenes in strong sunlight with a wide-angle lens. Sony’s original Nano AR Coating technology effectively suppresses internal reflections so that high-contrast, clear images can be captured even in difficult light.

Compact, lightweight design

This lens weighs just 0.82lb. (373g) and measures in at only 2.89” x 3.33“ (73.5 x 84.7 mm). It’s small size and light weight enhance mobility when used with compact E-mount Full-frame or APS-C bodies and make up a well-balanced system that is ideal for use on gimbals or accessory grips.

30mm equivalent on APS-C bodies

The FE 20mm F1.8 G lens is highly recommended for APS-C as well as full-frame users.Itbalances well on smaller APS-C format bodies, providing a very useful wide-angle focal length of 30mm (full-frame format equivalent). 30mm is great for taking snapshots around town, shooting scenery while hiking or mountain climbing, and much more.

Aperture ring with switchable click stops

In addition to providing the fast, hands-on response required for still and moviemaking applications, the FE 20mm F1.8 G lens’saperture ring includes a switch that turns its click stops on or off: ON for tactile feedback when shooting stills, or OFF for silent control when shooting movies. The combination of quiet XD Linear Motors and the quiet operation available when the click stops are off is not only great for smooth, seamless aperture control when shooting movies, but also for shooting theater, concerts, and events where noise must be minimized.

Customizable multi-function focus hold button

The focus hold button not only performs its primary function to lock focus when recomposing but can be customized via the camera body menu settings to a number of other functions depending on your needs. In addition to Focus Hold, these custom functions include: Eye AF, AF On, Aperture Preview, Shot Result Preview or Bright Monitoring.

Instant auto/manual focus selection

Instantly and quickly switch between auto and manual focus via an AF/MF switch on the side of the lens. This makes operation faster and easier as you let the camera and lens focus for you or decide to take control and manually focus on the precise point you choose.

Natural, linear manual focus response

Linear Response MF (manual focus) ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control is feels immediate and precise in both still and movie modes.

Dust and moisture resistant1 for robust reliability

The dust and moisture resistance1 design make this lens appropriate for heavy-duty outdoor use, especially when combined with a camera that employs weather resistant measures.

Close-up, wide-angle shooting

Get a unique perspective through close-up, wide angle shooting. The combination of high close-up capability of just 7.5” (0.19m) with a max. magnification of 0.2x (when used in AF mode), and 7” (0.18m) with a max. magnification 0.22x (when focused manually)and wide-angle characteristic produces unique expression with dramatic perspectives and beautiful background bokeh. This versatility makes it ideal to get close-up shots of your subject and an excellent choice for gimbal/grip mounting, whether shooting selfies or other subjects.

Sony FE 35mm F1.4 GM Full-Frame Large-Aperture Wide Angle G Master Lens

Sony

Product description

The 35mm F1.4 GM features a superior optical design, including two XA (Extreme Aspherical) elements and an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element that deliver outstanding corner-to-corner resolution, even wide open. The 11-blade circular F1.4 aperture mechanism creates beautiful bokeh that is a hallmark of the G Master series. Fast focusing is attained through the XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear focus drive system. This lens sports class-leading size and weight, providing great handling and mobility.

  • Compact wide prime lens w/ stunning G Master bokeh and resolution
  • F1.4 max aperture for extraordinary brightness and depth of field
  • Two (XA) Extreme Aspheric elements for stunning resolution
  • ED (Extra-low dispersion) glass element reduce chromatic aberration
  • Nano AR coating II suppresses reflections, flare and ghosting

Product features

Advanced Optical Performance

Using Sony’s most advanced optical design and manufacturing technology, it delivers extraordinary resolution and gorgeous bokeh with precision focus performance. Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements, an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element and Nano AR coating II all contribute to high-contrast, high-resolution results with corner-to-corner sharpness and dramatically reduce chromatic aberration, flea and ghosting.

F1.4 max aperture

The F1.4 max aperture provides extraordinary brightness and depth of field, allowing you to isolate your subject from the foreground and background with amazing light gathering capabilities when shooting wide open. The unique combination of wide F1.4 aperture with 11 circular aperture blades and two XA (extreme aspherical) lens elements deliver on the G Master promise of ultra-sharp in focus areas of your image with beautiful soft defocused bokeh. The fast F1.4 aperture is not only good for shallow depth of field, but ideal for situations that require more advanced light gathering capabilities like indoor, night and astral photography, making this lens perfect for any occasion.

Two XA (Extreme Aspherical) lens element

The FE 35mm F1.4 GM incorporates two extremely precise XA (extreme aspherical) elements - manufactured to 0.01-micron surface precision - in an innovative optical design that achieves stunning G Master resolution throughout the image area, while delivering smooth, creamy bokeh in out-of-focus areas. Two XA elements compensate for coma, field curvature, and astigmatism, that can be problems with wide-angle large-aperture optics. These elements also enable closer focusing distance and contribute to the compact and lightweight design.

Beautiful, natural-looking bokeh

While the two XA elements effectively suppress onion ring bokeh, the 11-blade circular aperture maximizes the beauty of this large-aperture prime-lens, contributing to impressive images in which the subject stands out against a smoothly defocused foreground and background, as well as perfectly round points of defocused light. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides that create unappealing, polygonal-shaped defocused points of light. This lens overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.

An ED glass element to reduce flare

An ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element significantly reducing flare and ghosting by taking axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration (due to differences in magnification) out of the picture. Resolution and bokeh is maximized while leaving precisely rendered edges with no fringing or unnatural coloration right out to the image edges.

Close-ups with stunning bokeh

The two XA lens elements plus innovative mechanical, optical and control technology achieve a minimum focusing distance of just 10.6” (27cm / 25cm when focusing manually) with a maximum magnification of 0.23x (0.26x when focusing manually), making it possible to shoot impressive close-ups with smooth, creamy background bokeh. The combination of F1.4 maximum aperture and the flexibility to choose your shooting distance affords plenty of control for stills as well as movies. This compact 35mm lens can deliver spectacular images with an extremely wide variety of subjects.

XD Linear Motors for fast, precise, quiet focusing

The FE 35mm F1.4 G Master lens incorporates a precision internal focus mechanism consisting of two XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors that easily keep up with the high-speed capabilities of today’s most advanced camera bodies, taking advantage of their full autofocus speed, precision, and tracking potential to capture the most dynamic subjects. New control algorithms make it possible to drive the lens’s focus group smoothly and without delays for responsive, silent, precise and continuous autofocus in both still and video modes.

New Nano AR Coating II enhances clarity

A new Nano AR Coating II has been developed that can be evenly applied to large lens elements or highly curved element surfaces to suppress internal reflections and minimize flare and ghosting for clear, crisp imagery. Despite the lens's wide angle of view, Nano AR Coating II maintains high clarity and contrast throughout the entire image, even in difficult light.

Compact, lightweight design

This lens weighs just 1.155lb. (524g) and measures in at only 2.99” x 3.78“(76 x 96 mm). It’s small size and light weight enhance mobility when used with compact E-mount Full-frame or APS-C bodies and make up a well-balanced system that is ideal for use on gimbals or accessory grips.

52.5mm equivalent on APS-C bodies

The FE 35mm F1.4 G Master lens is highly recommended for APS-C as well as full-frame users. It balances well on smaller APS-C format bodies, providing a very useful focal length of 52.5mm (full-frame format equivalent). 52.5mm is great for taking snapshots around town, shooting scenery while hiking or mountain climbing, and much more.

Aperture ring with switchable click stops

In addition to providing the fast, hands-on response required for still and moviemaking applications, the FE 35mm F1.4 G Master lens’s aperture ring includes a switch that turns its click stops on or off: ON for tactile feedback when shooting stills, or OFF for silent control when shooting movies.

The dust and moisture resistant design make this lens appropriate for heavy-duty outdoor use, especially when combined with a camera that employs weather resistant measures.

Ideal for movie making

The FE 35mm F1.4 G Master lens has clear advantages for moviemaking. With an wide 35mm angle of view on full frame bodies and 52.5mm on APS-C bodies or Super 35mm cameras, two XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motors for fast, precise autofocus and tracking, a bright F1.4 maximum aperture for beautifully defocused background bokeh, excellent close-up performance and a class leading compact and lightweight design, this lens is ideal for all types of content creators. In addition to the small size and light weight, its internal focus design makes it convenient for use on compact gimbals or grips for vlogging and other applications.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this made or manufactured in Japan
Answer: I do not know if it is made in Japan...but, I think that does not matter. It is an excellent lens.Hope that this helps.
Question: Is the lens compatible with the Sony mirrorless a
Answer: Yes it is
Question: Could someone help me compare this lens to Sony 35mm f/1.8 please? http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SEL35F18-35mm-Prime-Fixed/dp/B0096W1P5W/ref=pd_sim_p_
Answer: I have both. They are quite similar in character, actually (except for focal length obviously). The 35 is more evenly sharp across the frame, whereas the 50 emphasizes the center, but is sharper in the center than the 35. They're both very sharp by f/4, and have similar chromatic performance (notably the longitudinal aberrations are very visible on both below f/4 on both). The 35 focuses a bit faster, especially in low light. I think the magnification at minimum focus is also very similar (.16x or so). The 35 is more compact. The 50 can blur backgrounds more, so it's better for that look, whereas the 35 must be focused somewhat closer to achieve the same background blur, so it's less useful if that's your thing. The hood on the 35 isn't as effective as that of the 50, but it's more compact. The focus rings are similar in feel. The 35 is a bit more prone to lens flare. Overall I prefer the 35 because it's a more versatile focal length, but they are both great lenses. I'd pick the 50 if I were mainly doing portraits, and the 35 if you want a walk around lens with great sharpness and low light ability.
Question: Is the lens comes with food
Answer: My didnt come with food. I was a little disappointent. My last lens came with a cheeseburger and fries.... :(

User questions & answers

Question: Does it work with the a7ll? Does it shoot full frame? Does it require an adapter
Answer: Yes, BUT on an APS-C camera like the Sony A6000, this lens will function as a 36mm-158mm zoom because this lens is designed for a full-frame sensor. There are many articles you can read about this crop/multiplication factor.
Question: What is the recommended tripod for this lens with a Sony a
Answer: I have tried both and have found that the Sony has a much sharper image than the Canon. I bought the Sony A7R III and the Sony 24-105 partly because I was not happy with the Cannon sharpness.
Question: Will this lens work with 1.4x teleconverter
Answer: The Sony 24-105 f./4 lens uses a 77mm filter.
Question: does it work with sony alpha 6600 ? and what size of filter and cap it needs
Answer: They are the same model and spec. The only change is the country of origin. It was China before, now the (SEL24105G/2) is made in Thailand.

Question: What are the lens’ limitations on an NEX
Answer: The SEL200600G is fully compatible with the Sony NEX7
Question: What camera bag do you use to carry/transport this lens? Is the bag spacious enough and have enough padding to protect contents of the bag? Thx
Answer: Ape case makes a nice, large lens bag. Look for the yellow interior. It only has room for the lens and camera though. No accessories. I personally bought a Tenba bag. It fits the lens and camera easily but also has a zippered storage area for flash, batteries, cards, filters. I can't remember where I bought it. It is a little bigger than a lens case but you can put everything you need in it and it is compact. 1 When the NEX series, ILCE-3000/3500, ILCE-5000/5100, ILCE-7/7R/7S, is attached, the autofocus function is limited.

Internal zoom mechanism

An internal zoom mechanism means that the length of the

lens remains constant while zooming, maintaining ideal

balance for stable shooting. Since the lens zoom mechanism is internal, it also has a high resistance to dust and moisture unlike other super telephoto lenses that are typically prone to drawing dust and moisture into the lens. The internal zoom offers quick zoom operation with light zoom ring torque and is ideal in difficult outdoor conditions.

11 - blade circular aperture

An 11-blade circular aperture mechanism adds to the beauty of the bokeh produced by the SEL200600G lens, making it possible to use the narrow depth of field available at super-telephoto focal lengths to produce striking images with deep, creamy G Lens bokeh.

ED glass reduces flare and ghosting

ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements take axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration caused by differences in magnification, out of the picture. The 200-600mm G Super telephoto zoom lens incorporates one five ED glass elements to maximize resolution and bokeh, while leaving precisely rendered edges with no fringing or unnatural coloration.

User questions & answers

Question: has anyone used this lens on a a5100? reacently saw someone selling on CL for 180 bucks. is it worth it
Answer: I used this lens on an A6000 camera. It is a small, light weight lens and physically works well on the A5000-A6000 series. If you mostly care about sharpness at the center of the image, this lens is fine; however the edges of the image are soft at all apertures. I ended up selling the FE 28-70mm lens and buying the E 18-105mm lens, which is bigger and heavier but also optically better.
Question: Does this lens fit Sony a
Answer: yes it will fit the 6100 and any cameras that use Sony "E" mount lenses, including all Sony Nex series, a6000 series and a7 and a9 series (i.e. many different aps-c and full frame cameras)
Question: What is the difference, (other than $165), between this lens and the exact same thing listed just below it
Answer: I can't see what you're looking at so I can only guess. One is if it new or used I would go with used just like I did with this lens. It works great and lenses tend to last forever if their treated right. Not like a camera that has a click count with sensors that could go bad. The other thing I could guess you mean is the difference between the Zeiss 24-70 and this Sony 28-70.the Zeiss a better lens with better coating, a constant aperture, and slightly wider field of view. But if you're buying it for the a7s where a constant aperture isn't as important you may not notice a difference. Hope this helps
Question: I have a a7r. should i spend the extra $$ and get a sel2470z instead
Answer: I have had both lenses and the 24-70 ZA is the best choice. Color is a lot sweeter and the sharpness is substantially better considering the A7r is made for resolution quality is the best Ive seen. The Zeiss lens has gone down in price and if you need a zoom its worth paying the extra money. I think bad reviews for the Zeiss 24-70 are based on other bad reviews and not on the actual experience and longer time shooting with it. If you want a sharper lens get a prime. Otherwise don't go by reviews and rent the lens and shoot the hell out of the lens and have a true opinion. I happen to shoot several thousand exposures on min and can only blame myself for bad shot, not the lens. The new 28 lens is a great lens for the price and better than most zooms out there if you just want an all round prime you can crop to your heart's delight with all those A7r pixels.

Product features

50.1MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor w/ integral memory

The innovative full-frame Exmor RS image sensor delivers an overwhelming combination of resolution and speed with 50.1 effective megapixels* in a stacked CMOS architecture with integral memory. The sensor’s stacked structure and advanced A/D (analogue to digital) conversion provides significant improvements over the α9 II, allowing a huge amount of data to be read from the pixel area at high speed, then temporarily store it in the chip’s integrated memory so that high-speed processing can proceed without delays. Despite the large volume of data produced by the sensor’s 50.1 million pixels (approx. twice the pixel count of the α9 II), the Alpha 1 can shoot continuous bursts at up to 30 frames per second*(1.5x the speed of the α9 II) while offering fast, precise phase-detection AF

Continuous Shooting up to 30fps* with 120 AF/AE calculations per sec.

The Alpha 1 captures moments that would otherwise be lost thanks to its high-speed readout from the 50.1-megapixel* image sensor, making it possible to shoot up to 30 full-frame images per second*, using the electronic shutter, with full AF (autofocus) and AE (auto exposure) tracking up to an astonishing 120 calculations per second*, with AE response latency as low as 0.033 second*, even with sudden changes in brightness. A large buffer memory and increased overall system speed allow up to approximately 165 JPEG images* or 155 compressed RAW images* to be captured in one continuous 30 fps burst and at 20 frames per second, users can shoot up to 238 full-frame compressed RAW images or 400 full-frame JPEG images. This can be a huge confidence-booster when timing is critical for sports, wildlife, and other moving subjects.

8x more powerful, next generation BIONZ XR image processing engine

The Alpha 1 incorporates the next generation BIONZ XR image processing engine which performs 8x faster processing compared to the BIONZ X processing engine. found on previous models. The BIONZ XR handles all of AF, image recognition, image quality adjustments, development, and more in real time, minimizing processing latency while markedly boosting still image and movie processing power. Furthermore, user interface, network, and file management processing are distributed so that fast, stress-free control response is maintained regardless of real-time processing load.

Selectable continuous shooting speeds with electronic shutter

The Alpha 1 offers a range of selectable continuous shooting speeds: 20, 15, 10, or 5 fps assignable to the Hi, Mid, and Lo drive modes. Continuous shooting is fixed at 30 fps in the Hi+ mode. This makes it easier to set a continuous shooting speed that best suits the subject and shooting environment, while an expanded range of speed and compression combinations offers new flexibility. A continuous shooting speed of 15 fps coupled with the “M: 21M JPEG + Compressed RAW” recording mode, for example, will allow more than 1000 still images to be shot in one burst* in APS-C mode.

* Number may change according to shooting conditions and the memory card used.

World’s first* 240 fps refresh rate, 9.44M* dot 0.64” QXGA OLED EVF

Complimenting the camera’s ability to capture images at an unprecedented speed, the Alpha 1 viewfinder features the world’s first* 240 fps refresh rate, for a super-smooth display. The viewfinder does not black out when an exposure is made to offer an uninterrupted view and allow for seamless framing and tracking, even during continuous shooting. The 9.44 million-dot (approx.), 0.64 type Quad-XGA high-definition OLED display and refined optics deliver the highest resolution in its class . It also offers 0.90x viewfinder magnification, a 41° diagonal FOV, and a 25mm-high eyepoint for clear, low distortion viewing from corner to corner.

*As of the January 2021 product announcement, Sony survey of full-frame interchangeable-lens digital still cameras.

Blackout-free* shooting up to 30fps from fast sensor readout speed

Viewfinder blackout occurs in conventional DSLRs when the mirror flips up to expose an image. Since the Alpha 1 viewfinder does not black out when an exposure is made, the user has an uninterrupted view of the subject and scene that allows smooth, seamless framing and tracking even during high-speed continuous shooting, ensuring that fleeting moments can be captured with confidence. Blackout-free* shooting is a game-changer for shooting sports where rapid and erratically moving subjects must be captured, and even for portraits where fleeting expressions can make a huge difference. The Alpha 1 offers a viewing experience that is close to viewing with the naked eye.

*Using electronic shutter. Display updating will be slower at low shutter speeds.

World’s first* anti-flicker mechanical and electronic shutter

In addition to anti-flicker shooting with mechanical shutter, the Alpha 1 is the World’s first* camera to boast ant-flicker with electronic shutter thanks to the high-speed readout from the stacked Exmor RS image sensor. This makes blackout-free shooting, up to 120 AF/AE tracking calculations per second, up to 30 fps continuous shooting, silent shooting, and other advantages of the electronic shutter available without flicker issues when shooting under fluorescent or other flicker-prone types of artificial light. Anti-flicker shooting is also available with the mechanical shutter at up to 10 fps (“Hi+” setting) with full AF/AE tracking.

*As of the January 2021 product announcement, Sony survey of full-frame interchangeable-lens digital still cameras.

Anti-Distortion Shutter

Even with its high-resolution 50.1 effective megapixel1 image sensor, the Alpha 1 reduces rolling shutter by approximately 1.5x19 compared to the α9 II when shooting stills*1 using electronic shutter. Fast sensor readout and the powerful BIONZ XR processing engine all work together to achieve extremely high processing speeds. Additionally, the Alpha 1 also pushes beyond mechanical device limitations with a maximum shutter speed of 1/32000 sec. This extended shutter speed range provides new exposure flexibility and makes ND filters unnecessary in a wider range of lighting and shooting environments.

*1 Slight distortion may be noticeable in some shooting situations.

Dual drive mechanical shutter for up to 1/400 sec. flash sync

With significant advances in mechanical as well as electronic shutter performance, the Alpha 1 boasts the world’s fastest* flash sync speed of 1/400 sec. in Full-frame and 1/500 sec. in APS-C mode with mechanical shutter. It incorporates a carbon fiber shutter curtain that is both durable and lightweight along with a newly developed dual-driven shutter system utilizing spring and electromagnetic drive actuator for faster shutter response. Flash can be added to bring out extra dimensionality in the subject. A faster flash sync. speed takes advantage of the higher flash output vs. using HSS ( using high-speed sync.) for images with wide open aperture in bright situations can also be used to match exposure to a bright background while flash is used to illuminate a moving subject.

*As of the January 2021 product announcement, Sony survey of full-frame interchangeable-lens digital still cameras.

Silent, vibration free electronic shutter w/ all-in-one Silent Mode

The electronic shutter in the Alpha 1 has several advantages, including the ability to shoot completely silently and without any vibration that can occur with a mechanical shutter. Silent shutter is ideal when shooting sports or events in a quiet environment, while being vibration-free minimizes the likelihood of vibration-induced blur, further contributing to superior resolution and image quality. Since the electronic shutter has no moving components, it is much more durable than any mechanical counterpart. A convenient All-in-one Silent Mode setting in the menu makes it possible to set all parameters related to silent operation in one quick step, allowing faster setup when shooting concerts, theater, or in other situations where absolute silence is required.

Incredible autofocus w/ 759 phase detection AF points*, 92% coverage

The Alpha 1 incorporates Sony’s highly acclaimed Fast Hybrid AF in all modes for both still and movie shooting. The Exmor RS sensor and powerful BIONZ XR processing engine make it possible to provide a high-density array of 759 selectable phase-detection AF points for high-speed autofocus tracking capability with the precision of 425-point contrast-detection AF to quickly lock onto subjects that move erratically or change speed suddenly and track them with tenacious reliability across 92% (approx.) of the imaging area.

*759 AF measurement points for still images. The number of points used varies according to the shooting mode.

Real-time AF tracking, Real-time Eye-AF (humans, animals, birds)

Sony’s advanced Real-time Eye AF improves detection performance by 30% over the previous systemi, thanks to the powerful BIONZ XR image processing engine. It ensures accurate, reliable detection, even when the subject’s face looks away. In addition to improved Real-time Eye AF for humans and animals*, the Alpha 1 employs high-level subject recognition technology to provide Real-time Eye AF for birds*, a first in Alpha series cameras. Optimized algorithms ensure that tracking is maintained even if a sitting bird suddenly takes flight, or the framing suddenly changes

*Still image for humans, animals, and birds. Eye-AF for animals and birds not available in movie mode.

**Accurate focus may not be achieved with certain subjects in certain situations.

AI-based Real-time AF Tracking

AI-based Real-time Tracking with a 30% improvement in subject detection performance thanks to the new BIONZ XR processing engine and a new subject recognition algorithm uses color, pattern (brightness), distance (depth), face and eye information to process spatial information in real time at high speed. The focus area will seamlessly change between face and eye to object tracking according to the condition of the subject. Tracking [On] and Tracking [Off] can be assigned to custom buttons which are useful to activate AF tracking when needed or temporarily= turn tracking off in situations where tracking is difficult or when the tracking frame might switch to the wrong subject.

4K with full sensor readout, no pixel binning, and 5.8K oversampling

User questions & answers

Question: How does this compare to the G master counter-part? I've heard conflicting things
Answer: It comes with a lens cap, soft draw-string case, and a high-quality petal-style hood. Very nice. BTW, best lens I've ever owned...by far.
Question: Is this the sony 85mm f1.8 fe lens as shown in the picture
Answer: This is a prime 55mm lens it doesn't zoom. It is a fixed focal length. It is 55mm on the full farm A7 & A7R and the equivalent of approximately an 82mm on an APS-C sensor camera.
Question: Why there are 2 models? If they are the same lens, why one is currently unavailable and the other is in stock
Answer: It says on box "made in Thailand". This is my second Zeiss. I still own the SEL24F18, both are built to extremely high standard, no flex at all. The only sub par component of the older Zeiss was the petal hood that fell apart in less than a year, I had to superglue it back together. The older lens has seen hell and still going strong after 3 years of heavy use. I tell you all this cos I was worried too, but when you see the images you get from the lens, wow! Also, unlike the other E mount Zeiss, I have not read about a single bad copy of the lens. Hope this helps
Question: Is this a legitimate lens
Answer: In general, don't use the clear UV filter with this lens. It will degrade the image quality. If you care so little about the image quality, you should not get this lens. Get the SEL50F18F and save hundreds of dollars. If you must use an UV filter, do not use the cheap Tiffen UV filter offered in a bundle. Use a Heliopan, or a Zeiss, or at the very least a B&W.
Question: what is in the box? does it come with lens hood
Answer: This will FIT on any e-mount camera, a6000, a6300, a5100, NEX, and ALL of the A7 (full frame) variants. BUT on an A7 it will either shoot in APS-C mode (using the same size area on the full frame sensor as an APS-C camera (a5xxx/a6xxx/NEX) and produce a lower resolution than the normal photo on the full-frame setting. You can shoot on the full-frame sensor setting on an A7(r/ii etc.) but you will see vignetting.
Question: How far does this lens zoom. I saw 14x but is that correct
Answer: Hi E40, Due to the crop factor, it will be multiplied to 1.5x. The angle of view of the 10-18mm lens will be equivalent to 15-27mm if mounted on your camera. -Anthony
Question: Where was the lense assembled? Japan or Thailand
Answer: Ignore the replies from G.Dudgeon, S.Erickson, and E.Daniels. The ILCE-3000 is an E-mount camera body, so yes, this lens will work perfectly with it because it is E-mount. And it is a great lens.
Question: Beginner question, is it best to use a clear filter to protect this lens or will it affect the quality at all
Answer: Assuming that you're using one of the NEX cameras, I don't think there's a 12mm prime available without using an adapter. That aside, 10-18mm would be more flexible than a fixed lens, and for landscapes, f/4 should be plenty fast. The 10-18 is a nice lens. Hope this helps. Dave
Question: Does this lens work with Sony a7? Is it for APS C format hence on Sony a7 there is a crop factor
Answer: Hello. Lenses with f/2.8 let in more light compared to an f/4 lens so shutter speeds can be set faster as well as ISO values set lower for the same exposure. Also, the f/2.8 lens will have more bokeh when shot at the widest aperture compared to f/4.
Question: What does "The angle of view will be narrower down to that of APS-C size" mean? This is on the A6000 lens compat page
Answer: This F2.8 lense is better. Lower fstop and good in low light. No distortion.
Question: Can I use this len in my Sony Alpha 3000 (ILCE3000)?, I want to buy it but if this doesnt work on my camera i dont waste my money
Answer: At 16mm there is no fisheye, I sometimes shoot group photos at 16mm. But at 35mm it’s a wide angle shot which has the fish eye look. This lens is an amazing lens with lots of versatility.
Question: Would this be a better choice for landscape than the 12mm Zeiss prime
Answer: If you have to ask that question, you probably shouldn't be looking into getting a $2100 dollar lens. Get a kit lens. 24-105 or 24-70

User questions & answers

Question: There is a firmware update for the sony a6300 and a6500 that provides support for this lens. will the a6000 work with this lens with no update (yet
Answer: yes, firmware version 1.05 provides support for the 18-135mm lens.
Question: Can you use it on a Sony a7lll
Answer: Yes, it is a compatible lens. Please be advised however that this is an aps-c lens will not cover the entire full frame sensor of the ILCE7M3.
Question: Does this lens increase in length when zoomed
Answer: Yes, unlike the internal zoom and focused SELP18105, the SEL18135 extends when zoomed out.
Question: Why would I’ll take this over the const f4 18-105? It’s the same size, almost the same focal and with non constant aperture
Answer: I have the 18-105 and it is a great lens for what it is. The zoom is slow, which is fine for video since the zoom frames may be edited out. But the power zoom is too slow for shooting action, and doing it manually isn't that fast either. I've held the 18-135 with an a6300 and it is a nice size for a walk-around lens, and it compacts nicely. But the quality will be lower than the 18-105.

Sony 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS APS-C E-mount Zoom Lens

With a versatile 18-135mm (27-202.5mm / 35mm equivalent) range, Optical SteadyShot Image stabilization and fast, precise, quiet AF, this compact and lightweight zoom for APS-C E-mount cameras produces excellent corner-to-corner sharpness and beautiful defocused bokeh to a variety of still and movie applications.

7.5x high magnification zoom

A versatile 7.5x high magnification zoom APS-C lens featuring an 18-135mm / 27-202.5mm (35mm equivalent) focal length, F3.5-5.6 aperture range and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization can cover a broad spectrum of subjects and situations, including scenery, portraits, nature, and general day-to-day photography.

Advanced Aspherical optical design

An aspherical element helps suppress aberrations, achieving impressively high resolution, sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and ultra-wide angles while reducing the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight.

ED (Extra low Dispersion)

Two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements control chromatic aberration for excellent sharpness from image center to periphery. ED glass elements correct for axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration, which affect resolution and bokeh, while leaving precisely rendered edges with no fringing or unnatural coloration.

7-blade Circular Aperture

When changing your aperture to defocus the background, light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background is enhanced with the 7-blade circular aperture used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing, polygonal-shaped, defocused points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.

Optical Image Stabilization

Optical SteadyShot image stabilization keeps your image stable even when your hands aren’t. By compensating for the minor hand motions that can cause blurring and distortion, Optical SteadyShot ensures brilliant photographic results – even at high magnification.

Fast, precise, quiet AF

An advanced linear motor powers the lens’s AF system, with outstanding, precise and quiet operation that is ideally suited for movies, as well as stills. Easily achieve accurate focus, even with moving subjects.

Class-leading close-up performance

Class-leading close-up performance with a minimum focusing distance of 1.48 ft. and 0.29x maximum magnification is ideal for portraits, telephoto, macro, and more.

Instant auto/manual focus selection

Instantly switch between auto and manual focus via an AF/MF switch on the side of the lens. This makes operation faster and easier as you let the camera and lens focus for you; or, decide to take control and manually focus on the precise point you chose.

User questions & answers

Question: Why buy this when the iPhone 11 Pro Max seems has the same focal lengths, wider aperture
Answer: I guess it depends on what you’re doing with your images. If you’re displaying them on the web use your iPhone. If you’re making prints of any significant size I’d go with the lens. The lens is fabulous, very sharp and great focal length.
Question: Will this work with a sony a99 ii
Answer: Since this lens is an "e" mount and the Sony a99 is an "a" mount, you will need to have an adapter for it to work. Be sure to check to be sure the functionality is the same when using the adapter...as that's a lot of $ to pay for a lens if it doesn't. It is a fabulous lens though (for my Sony a7r ii).
Question: Will it work with A
Answer: While it is true this is a full frame lens that in no way means it would not be a great lens on the a6000. The most important feature of this lens is the 2.8 aperture and that does not change on a crop sensor camera like yours! The larger aperture will still would allow it to focus faster and perform better in low light situations as well as allow for better bokah. Glass is more important than the body. The a6000 has a great sensor and image quality to start with and the lens would be awesome on it. The only "issue" is its not as wide as it would be on an A7 so think of its field of view as being a 36-105 instead of a 24-70. Not quite as good for landscape. Good glass will stay with your as you upgrade your bodies so the investment is totally worth it as long as you stay within the E-Mount system
Question: As a landscape photographer who usually shoots in f/11-f/22, is this sony 24-70 f2.8 lens really much better than the zeiss 24-70 f
Answer: no. at those apertures the difference will be minimal. if you pixel peep you may notice better detail and less distortion in the corners, but that's about it, but not enough to make or break the photo. or justify the price. the G master is also MASSIVE. mounting it on an A7R II will make your set up just as big and heavy as a Canon 5DM4 + 24-70 f/2.8 IIthe only reason i would carry a G Master is if would shoot at 2.8
