| Answer: | In a way it does. You have to remember that with high end cameras, everything you want to achieve is done through manual settings and through the use of lenses. I have not gotten the full hang of it yet, but if you buy a lenses with a low F stop, you can produce the "portrait" mode effect. I recently purchased a 25 mm lense with an F stop that can go to f2, this produces a great effect to blur out the background, but keep the subject in focus. You also have to understand the lenses, again, I am still an amateur at best, and just bumbling with settings, but I am learning as I have had a lot of friends ask me to do some boudoir shoots for them. The stock lens that comes in this kit can produce a slightly blurred background, but it wont achieve the same effect as the software modified camera phones. Remember though, what you produce with this camera, or others like it, will give you greater pixel depth to allow for larger printed pictures without the pixelated (dot look) camera phone images will produce. You can achieve some of the same effects with the right kind of software, in post processing. |

I only use mine for family photos, etc, and outings, but I may invest in another lens for close and father shots. I have a hummingbird nest on my patio, and I find the basic lens doesn't quite do the job of catching the tiny egg and details, and for distance it only goes so far. |

| Answer: | Some people consider the D3400 a better camera than the D3500 due to the elimination of the "Function" button on the front of the camera that was accessible with the photographer's left hand that allows the ISO setting to be changer with the right thumb wheel while looking through the viewfinder. Also the IR remote shutter control was eliminated. I believe from what I read that all this was done to reduce the size (the body is the same as the D5600) and weight of the camera, improve battery life, and reduce manufacturing cost. Nikon does have a free app for your smart phone, SnapBridge App, that allows your smart phone to act as a remote shutter control and can automatically send your pictures (reduced resolution) to your smart phone. So to answer your question - I don't believe the the D3500 is an upgrade or a downgrade to the D3400 just the next in their line of "Beginner" DSLR Cameras. |
