11 best nikon camera for portrait photography

Nikon is a well-known brand in the world of photography, and they offer a range of digital cameras suitable for portrait photography. While specific models may change over time, here are some general features and considerations when choosing a Nikon camera for portrait photography:

  1. Sensor Size: Nikon cameras come with various sensor sizes, including APS-C and full-frame sensors. Full-frame sensors are generally preferred for portrait photography because they can provide a shallower depth of field and better low-light performance, resulting in beautiful background blur (bokeh) and sharp subject focus.

  2. Megapixels: A higher megapixel count can provide more detail in portrait photos, but it's not the only factor to consider. A camera with around 20-24 megapixels is typically sufficient for high-quality portraits.

  3. Lens Compatibility: Nikon offers a wide range of compatible lenses for their cameras. For portraits, you might want to consider prime lenses with wide apertures (e.g., f/1.4, f/1.8) as they allow for excellent subject separation and background blur.Popular choices include the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 and Nikon 85mm f/1.8 lenses.

  4. Autofocus System: Look for a camera with a reliable and fast autofocus system, especially one that can lock onto and track subjects' faces and eyes. Nikon often includes advanced autofocus technology in their cameras.

  5. Image Processing and Quality: Nikon cameras typically produce high-quality images with accurate colors. Features like Nikon's EXPEED image processor contribute to image quality.

  6. ISO Performance: Good low-light performance is essential for indoor or low-light portrait photography. Nikon cameras often offer a wide ISO range and good noise reduction capabilities.

  7. Articulating Screen: Some Nikon cameras have articulating screens that can be useful for composing shots from different angles, including low or high angles for unique portraits.

  8. Viewfinder and Live View: A clear and accurate viewfinder can help you compose your portraits effectively. Additionally, Nikon cameras often have Live View mode with features like face detection for shooting portraits through the LCD screen.

  9. Built-in Flash: Some Nikon cameras come with built-in flashes, which can be handy for fill-in flash in portrait photography, especially in challenging lighting conditions.

  10. Customization Options: Nikon cameras typically offer a range of customization options, allowing you to fine-tune settings to your liking.

  11. Wireless Connectivity: Many modern Nikon cameras come with built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for easy transfer of photos to your smartphone or tablet, which can be convenient for sharing portraits on social media or with clients.

When selecting a Nikon camera for portrait photography, consider your specific needs, budget, and the types of portraits you plan to capture. It's also a good idea to visit a camera store to test different models in person to see which one feels most comfortable and suits your style.

User questions & answers

Question: My digital camera has a delay between pushing the shutter button and the photo actually being snapped. What is the response time of this camera
Answer: Yes
Question: does it come with lens cover
Answer: If you are vloging no because the screen doesn’t flip back for you to see yourself and if you want good sound no because no audio port but it’s good otherwise
Question: Is this camera good in low light situations
Answer: It's fine for nature, sunsets and landscapes. It's not good for sports, because it only shoots 3 frames per second doesn't have the best lens for sports. It would do OK for sports outside in full sun, but you might want to get the kit that has the 70-300mm lens. It will do badly at indoor sports events.
Question: Can you take close up macro shots with this camera
Answer: yes it comes with both

User questions & answers

Question: Will autofocus work on the D750 with my older Nikon 80-400mm lens
Answer: The first lens I have on my d750 was the older 80-400mm and it works fine. The D750 (and all FX dslrs) has both body motor and use the af-s lens motor
Question: How comfortable is this camera for a woman with small hands
Answer: I have small hands and I love it. I did have to get used to buttons being in different places from my other camera. Nikon d5100. The d750 is an awesome camera. It is lightweight too.
Question: Can you use DX lenses in DX mode with this camera? Thanks
Answer: Yes, DX lenses can be used on FX cameras, but that would be a total waste of money buying a camera like this, because your DX lenses cannot use all of the full frame sensor, which is the reason to buy Nikon cameras D610 and above to begin with. You would be much better off getting a D7100, a DX camera for over $1k less.
Question: Is the 24-120 kit lens a good choice for this camera, or is the 24-70 a much better choice for mostly landscapes? Is the 24-70 noticeably sharper
Answer: For me this is about aperture the F-24 to 70 is a 2.8 aperture lens the 24 to 120 is an F-4 if you plan on shooting in low light with out having to extend you ISO to noise range the 2.8 24 to 70 will work bast but if you have a budget and plan on using strobes or Speed lights than in may not matter. there many factor that you can come up with but it's also mainly what you perfer. Good Luck

User questions & answers

Question: How long is the queue of backorders on Nov 21-- what is the estimated wait time and/or now shipping camera to those who ordered how long ago
Answer: Can’t see why it won’t it’s the same puck that just about every other one use
Question: when wil D850 be available
Answer: What I've noticed with GPS connection is that parking garages block the signals. The vehicle/devices need a clean connection to the satellites.
Question: Is this the US model
Answer: It looks as though it will work on any Dashcam with the 3.5 mm GPS labeled jack on it. :)
Question: Does anyone have experience with this camera and the 28-300 Nikkor lens
Answer: After I connect the Aukey dash cam with the GPS plug in, the date and time in the video was incorrect in the first day. But starting the second day, the date and time on my LCD screen as well as the video were correct. Date and time are supposed to be automatically adjusted when you have the GPS plugged in. I had sent an email to Aukey customer service when I had the issues on day one and according to Aukey customer service, date and time should automatically adjust with the GPS plugged in. My unit has accurate date and time now.

D850: Extreme Resolution Meets Extreme Speed

When Nikon introduced the D800 and D800E, it set a new benchmark for DSLR image quality and super high resolution photography that approached medium format. Now, five years later, Nikon proudly introduces the next evolution in high resolution DSLRs, a camera that allows photographers to capture fast action in 45.7 megapixels of brilliant resolution. With remarkable advancements across the board—sensor design, autofocus, dynamic range, sensitivity, Speedlight control, battery life, shutter and mirror drive mechanisms, Silent Photography in Live-View mode, focus shift capability and more—this is quite possibly the most impressive, well-rounded DSLR yet.

Nikon's First Back-side Illuminated (BSI) Full-Frame Sensor

At the heart of the D850 is a Nikon designed sensor like none before it—a back-side illuminated (BSI) FX-format full-frame CMOS image sensor with 45.7 megapixels and no optical low-pass filter. A marvel of ingenuity, it achieves extraordinary image quality, enhanced light gathering efficiency, faster data readout and truer color. And with such a dense array of pixels, there's virtually no risk of moire.

Faster, Richer, Sharper Processing

Faster than EXPEED 4, EXPEED 5 quickly processes all 45.7 megapixels of data for lower noise, wider dynamic range, subtle tonal and textural details, high-speed continuous shooting at approx. 9 fps1 and full-frame 4K UHD movie recording.

Sensitive to Every Little Detail

The lower the ISO, the greater the dynamic range. Like the D810 before it, the D850 has the lowest base ISO of any DSLR or mirrorless camera2—ISO 64 (expandable down to ISO 32).

Do Not Disturb

When silence is golden—shooting golf, press conferences, weddings and more—turn on Silent Photography in Live View and capture without sound or mechanical vibration. In Mode 1, shoot for up to 6 FPS continuous at 45.7 MP. In Mode 2, shoot approx. 8.6-megapixel pictures in DX image area at approx. 30 FPS for up to 3 seconds.

Tilt and Touch

The tilting touchscreen LCD screen makes it easy to get the shot, even from high or low angles. Use Touch AF, Touch Shutter control and navigate menus, playback and more as if you were using a smartphone. Zoom in during Live View shooting and use the new Pinpoint AF to put focus right where you want it.

Autofocus that Keeps Up

The D850 uses the same field-proven ultra-accurate AF system as the flagship D5. With 153 focus points, 99 cross-type sensors and a dedicated AF processor, the D850 delivers all of its 45.7 MP performance with NIKKOR lenses. Shoot in low light to -4 EV. Capturing the most elusive subjects will feel like second nature with the D850.

Focus in Near Darkness

Autofocus down to -4 EV lets you capture in low-light situations. Suddenly, fast NIKKOR primes and zooms can handle even lower light than before.

Locked-on Subject Tracking

Nikon's exclusive AF engine uses parallel processing with a sequence control microcomputer to realize high AF performance for fast-moving subjects even during high-speed shooting.

Keeps up with the Action

With up to 7 FPS at 45.7 MP, the D850 can capture the decisive frame of a bride walking down the aisle or a fashion model's fluid pose. For nailing the shot at a high-speed race or of A-listers on the red carpet, try using the optional MB-D18 battery pack and shoot full resolution up to 9 FPS.

A Multimedia Powerhouse

Multimedia content creators rejoice. You are now free to record 16:9 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160) in full frame glory using the total width and resolution of the D850's back-side illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor. Take advantage of the large sensor size for clean output at high ISO and for shooting with zero crop factor with any full-frame NIKKOR lenses4, including wide and ultra-wide angle lenses.

Quickly Confirm Focus

Confirm your manual focus with Focus Peaking. Select high, medium or low sensitivity and red, yellow, blue or white highlights. Operates in manual focus mode with AF or compatible manual NIKKOR lenses.

Light it Up

When combined with the optional WR-A10/R10 transceiver (requires firmware version 3.0 or later), the D850 can control and wirelessly fire radio controlled SB-5000 Speedlights from another room, around corners or outdoors in bright sunlight.

4K Time-Lapse in Camera

Create entire 4K UHD time-lapse sequences right in the camera—an exclusive to Nikon DSLRs. Use Silent Live View Mode to bypass the mechanical shutter and mirror movement, saving thousands of shutter cycles and improving the D850's already outstanding battery performance.

8K Time-Lapse Using Interval Timer

Render jaw-dropping 8K time-lapse movies by shooting sequences of up to 9,999 full-size stills, again using Silent Live View Mode. Using the D850's Interval Timer Mode allows you to capture over 8K-size images with exquisite detail for time-lapse movie6 creation. And with no shutter vibration, your sequences will be tack-sharp.

Your Images. The World. Connected.

Transfer your images to a compatible smartphone or tablet instantly using Nikon's SnapBridge app. The app maintains a constant connection with the D850 via Bluetooth Low Energy for seamless transfers, sharing your favorite shots and even controlling the D850 for remote shooting.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i connect this camera to my computer with a usb
Answer: I have just purchased two of these (Elph 180). The first thing I noticed is that Canon has not improved the access door (battery/ sd card slot) in the many years since I had my first point& shoot Canon. (I have a canon rebel too - different story) The reason I am telling you this is that I urge you to buy a cable to download your shots, and clear the SD card from your camera. Every time you open and shut this little door, the weaker it becomes. Eventually you will be forced to tape the door shut to use the camera. I did this for years because I loved the camera. Finally I just got tired of it and bought the rebel. If the only time you have to open the door is to charge the battery, you will extend the usable life of the door HUGELY. As with most technology today, it's longevity depends on its weakest point. One of the two I purchased is for a 12 yr. old - I bought cables for both of us. My opinion: It's worth it because Canon still makes the best lenses.
Question: Does this have an automatic shutoff If I forget to turn it off
Answer: I don`t think so. But you`ll know if it`s on. When it`s on, the lens moves way out. When it`s off, it retracts, so the camera is flat. It would be very hard to forget to turn the camera off, or forget you left it on.
Question: Do you have to remove the battery from the camera in order to charge it
Answer: Does this camera come with a charger? It says it comes with a rechargeable battery but it isn’t saying anything about a charger. And from looking at other people’s comments I’m thinking it doesn’t come with a charger. So if not then what are you suppose to do cause it’s not regular batteries it’s the rectangle flat battery
Question: I notice the usb cable has to be purchased separately. does this camera require any special type of usb cable
Answer: The camera uses sd memory, so you dont need usb cable if your computer has a sd slot
Question: what kind of stand/tripod can you use this camera
Answer: Standard equipment will work with this camera , 1/4 inch tripod
Question: Is the camera suitable for professional use
Answer: Hello, it is not recommended for professional use. This is for entry-level users
Question: The camera is fixed focus it
Answer: Fixed focus, adjustment of focus is not supported. We recommend shooting at one meter away.
Question: Does the camera come with 2 batteries and a micro sd card
Answer: yes

User questions & answers

Question: I have a dx nikkor 18-300mm lens. will it work in the z50 using which adapter
Answer: I have not used this lens but have used a 28-300 Tamron with the adapter.
Question: If I'm unhappy with the camera, can I return it
Answer: Yes if returned inside the window Amazon gives you in your orders panel.
Question: Can you manually adjust all 3 exposure values (iso, aperture, shutter speed) individually
Answer: Yes, works the same as the DSLR
Question: I am a consumer taking pictures both inside and on trips. used to a d5100 with nikkor 18-200mm. will i need to flip back and forth lenses
Answer: Nah, you can use an ftz adaptor. But I think you should get the two lens kit, like I did. With the 16-50 it is so small and agile, I just love it. My landscapes and architecture shots have made me shake my head and chuckle with delight a few times now. The 50-250 lens is small enough that it fits in the front zipper pocket of my old very small camera bag. I had the d70s with big ol lenses, and had to lug around a backpack/camera bag. Now I just grab my shoulderbag and go. I could bury the whole bag with both lenses, spare battery, spare card, cleaning tools, etc into a carry-on bag...with plenty o room to spare! The range of 16-250 on the crop sensor is outrageous, and the image quality is such that I haven't really wished I could adapt a regular lens. BIF are a challenge, though I have captured some osprey and eagles fighting that stunned me...they look photoshoppped against a vivid blue sky. Anyway, you don't need a big 18-200, unless it's super fast. The kit is so small. So capable. So sexy. I haven't sold my other lenses yet, and may still adapt a very wide angle fast lens for astro stuff, but all my other stuff is just collecting dust in the closet. Very happy I bought my z50. Cheap and more-than-good-enough for the creative consumer's needs, the point-and-shoot soccer dad, and even the pro photographer (my friend who is a pro videographer begged me to let him enlarge anf frame my eagle osprey combat shot...it's just that good.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the base option with the 18-55mm come with a camera strap
Answer: I bought mine with a different lens option (I highly recommend the 35-140mm lens), bu I'm pretty sure every new D5600 legally imported by Nikon comes with a strap. And it's a wonderful camera -- you'll love it.
Question: I’m stuck between getting the canon eos rebel t6i and this camera. what are the differences between the two? which brand would be better to buy
Answer: It depends on what you're going to use the camera for. Both are outstanding cameras. I find canon seems to take better action shots, sports, in motion type things... the Nikon is a great all around camera. It will still take good action photos don't get me wrong, just canon is tops when it comes to that. The Nikon box lense that comes with the 5600 is great.
Question: Does this include a rechargable battery
Answer: This listing is shipped and sold directly by Amazon. As Amazon is one of Nikon's authorized resellers in the USA, the camera will contain an EN-EL14a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery and a Nikon MH-24 Quick Charger included.
Question: I have seen some articles and reviews that say SnapBridge has its issues and feels incomplete. Is the camera set up to do updates to fix this
Answer: Both the camera's firmware and the Snapbridge app can be updated by the user. We currently - as of 2/2/2017 - have an issue with some camera's communicating, using Snapbridge, with users of iOS version 10.2 or later. We are working to identify the issue and will issue the necessary update when the issue has been fixed.

Enhanced video features

Record cinema-quality Full HD footage with photo-like sharpness, vibrant color and crystal clear stereo sound. Pair the D5600 with an AF-P lens, which uses a stepping motor for smooth, near-silent autofocus, to ensure maximum audio fidelity. Create amazing time-lapse movies right in the camera.
