User questions & answers

Question: can this scope be used as a spotting scope for bird watching
Answer: Excellent for bird-watching. At 20x, it's fine. At 40x (long distance) you may want a strudier tripod, and because it's daylight, you can look through the smaller 42mm hole (take off the little cap) in the dust cap and that will improve the sharpness at high power. If you want a better spotting scope, simply buy a fancy wide-angle/high-performance 1.25 eyepiece (super-plossl, etc), around 15 mm focal length.
Question: You say that any tripod that I use for photography should work. Does that mean that I can screw my tripod head into the telescope
Answer: Yes. As others have said, the tripod that comes with the telescope is reallllly flimsy. There are a couple of screw holes on the bottom of the telescope. I was able to attache the telescope to my other tripod using the detachable head on the tripod.
Question: I'm a real beginner/plan to purchase this for my son so we can both explore the night sky, etc. Is it really easy to setup?/How long will it take
Answer: The scope is really good for beginners and it is easy to set up. As others have said the the included tripod is small for portability and not very stable. If used fully "retracted" on the hood of a car for example, it's OK. I've used it with a Celestron 7.5MM eyepiece and a 2x barlow lens and it can still resolve the rings of Saturn on a clear night. It's not designed for that kind of magnification but for an inexpensive scope with simple lenses I was impressed. I wouldn't recommend trying that though until you have some practice on focus, finding objects in the sky, and purchasing a heavy duty camera tripod. You must remember even with the highest power eyepieces, which you only want to consider using for viewing planets, objects are really small which is due to it's 400mm focal length. Overall it's WAY better than spending 40-50 dollars on a cheap toy at the local discount store. Another good option comparable to this is the Orion 76mm Fun Scope. It's really only for table top use but it's easy to swivel up/down left/right. It is a reflector though and images don't appear as crisp in my opinion. You'll find out that half the quality of a telescope is how good the tripod or mounting set up is. For the price you can't go wrong with this scope. I own several telescopes from computer driven to large reflectors and still grab this for quick views of Orions belt, Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon, and star clusters like the double cluster and the Pleiades. Just to add to an already long answer, I added an inexpensive laser object finder (similar to the Celestron Star Finder) instead of the mostly useless viewfinder. It makes it ten times easier to point the scope at objects you're trying to look at and it doesn't take much modifications to get it screwed to the scope tube or stuck on with foam tape. Your son will thank you!
Question: can i see with my left eye
Answer: Only if you look at objects on the left....use right eye for objects on the right side....if its straight above you , you can use both eyes.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a good telescope for astrophotography (nebula, star clusters, galaxies?) Can I attach a Canon EOS 60D to this using a T mount
Answer: Not with a camera that heavy the mount and counter weight couldn't take the load. To do any good deep sky images you need to put the motor drive on it and its also would handle that heavy of a camera. This telescope can see many deep sky object I have seen M81 (Bode's Galaxy) in Ursa Major. You can put on a Celestron Motor Drive and a Orion 52175 Star Shoot Solar System Color Imaging Camera IV and take great pictures. Happy watching!
Question: I am planning to travel with this. What would be total weight and dimension of this in a packed box along with tripod and all accessories
Answer: This is not a scope I would think that would travel well. First off it is a Jones-Bird Reflector design which means it is difficult and somewhat time consuming to collimate. Travel would just complicate that more. The box is fairly large as well - As far as weight 30.9 x 16.9 x 8.5 inches ; 17 pounds assembled - 30 pounds packaged. You would be better off with a small refractor type scope for travel or a small maksutov-cassegrain around 90mm or so.
Question: What will i see with this
Answer: There are two types of telescopes and each has its own purpose. If you are just interested in viewing the moon and the other 5 inner planets, buy a good refractor telescope. This type magnifies an image thru lenses. Great for viewing planets (or other daytime scenic viewing/bird watching, etc), and are more forgiving in high light-pollution areas, such as cities. But they basically are useless for viewing other night sky objects. If you are interested in viewing star clusters, galaxies, nebulae, etc, buy a good reflector scope with as wide an aperture as you can afford. Be sure you have a very dark sky available. If you live in or near a mid to large city, you can forget about using it at home. The light pollution precludes any acceptable viewing. These types use mirrors to collect light from a distance object and then projects it into the eyepiece. The larger the mirror (and thus, more expensive), the farther and clearer you will gather light from and be able to view distant objects. These are not very good at viewing the closer planets in any detail and tend to wash them out from eye overexposure. (Which is why so many here say that you will not see the planets in color. They are using reflector scopes to view planets. But even a cheap refractor scope will show you the true colors of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn easily.) of course, they do make telescopes that incorporate the best of both types, but they are quite expensive.
Question: What will I be able to see through these
Answer: I am a novice user who started using this telescope Early Summer 2017. I was able to observe Jupiter and Saturn with some practice and patience. Luckily they were easy to find in the night sky and followed behind the path of the moon. I could make out the colored bands if Jupiter and could see the rings of Saturn with this telescope. It was blurry but still exhilarating!! I can’t wait until next Summer when I can view Mars!

User questions & answers

Question: I'm a beginner in telescope and i have a telescope thats a 137EQ. This one here is 70EQ. What does the EQ mean
Answer: No. I returned the one I bought. I couldn’t see 5.56 hole at less than 100 yards
Question: Which eyepiece(s) are you using to view planets? I am trying to view Jupiter and Venus, but all I see are bright blurry circles? Thanks
Answer: The “frame” is more “platform” and it is best described as black. The frame they are referring to is the adjustable base that lifts the mattress. The fabric that covers the frame is black with black/very dark charcoal gray trim. The plastic legs of the frame are also black. As far as I know, there is no white option.
Question: I want to buy this telescope as a gift. I also plan to buy the camera to go with it. what other accessories should I get? Is there a computer disk etc
Answer: There are two on each side, on the side frame rail, under the head of the bead. No they cannot be moved.
Question: what eyepieces doe it come with
Answer: I did, but I purchased a Casa Blanc Bed Bridge Twin to King Mattress Converter Kit - Memory Foam Gap filler.

Amazon.com Celestron’s computerized NexStar 130 SLT adds affordable "Go-To" technology to a compact Newtonian reflector telescope. By using mirrors instead of lenses, the Newtonian optics of the NexStar 130 SLT produce an image nearly five times brighter than the NexStar 60 SLT refractor telescope. The package includes everything except the batteries, and features easy no-tool setup, two good eyepieces, and even includes a student version of "The Sky" planetarium software.

The Newtonian design of the NexStar 130 SLT is optimized to produce bright images over a wide field of view. When I use an optional 32mm Plossl eyepiece, the famous Double Cluster in Perseus looks like a display of celestial fireworks with streamers of stars trailing across the 2 degree field of view. The standard equipment 25mm eyepiece magnifies the image about 26 times, with a wide field of view just right for viewing deep space objects like star clusters or the Orion Nebula.

Celestron NexStar 130
The included 9mm eyepiece (72x magnification) offers great views of the Lunar disk and globular star clusters like M13. And when I add a 2x Barlow lens to the 9mm eyepiece for a total magnification of 144x, I can easily see cloud bands on the planet Jupiter and pick up detail in Saturn’s rings.

The NexStar 130 SLT also features Celestron’s patented SkyAlign technology. With SkyAlign I don't need a star chart or a compass to align the telescope, I just enter the date and time then point the telescope at three bright stars. SkyAlign tells me the star names, and allows the telescope to find over 4,000 stars, planets, and galaxies by just pushing a button. The accurate tracking makes it easy to get high power views of the planets, and allowed me to take some great pictures using a Celestron NexImage webcam. I also like the "Two-Star align" and "Solar System align" modes because I can often get the NexStar system up and running while older scopes are still waiting for their alignment stars to appear in he twilight.

Reflector telescopes offer more light gathering power per dollar than any other design, but that value is balanced by the fact that the mirrors may need to be aligned or "collimated" occasionally. Using Celestron’s Collimation Eyepiece

Celestron NexStar 130
I had no trouble fine tuning the optical alignment, and I was rewarded with sharp views of Lunar craters even when I pushed the magnification up to the theoretical limit of 300x. The other drawback of a computerized telescope, of course, is battery consumption. An optional PowerTank battery is a handy way to power the NexStar 130 SLT, and I like to keep the tripod legs short and observe while seated because this gives me a solid and comfortable view. --Jeff Phillips

User questions & answers

Question: Has Celestron fixed the problem of needing to reset the clock each time the telescope is turned off yet? RonR
Answer: Greetings, The secret to Mars is a good selection of color filters and knowing what you are looking at for landmarks! It IS possible to view some planetary detail with the 127 Mak on Mars when it is close to Earth, as it will be this 2018 season. With proper (red/orange filters) the polar caps and major landmarks like Syrtis Major, Hellas, etc., can be observed. But you MUST do your homework first as to what side of mars is being displayed, and knowing your landmarks on the planet by studying Martian maps. A well-trained eye is vital. Steve Franks
Question: What do you consider must have accessories for this scope? I have the moon filter
Answer: The AstroMaster 80AZS is a refractor telescope design. Its Focal Ratio is f/5, and its Focal Length is 400mm (15.74").
Question: Hi, I have been able to see Mars today but could not get any details. How can I focus more? I have all the kits with me
Answer: This was purchased as a gift for a friend so I have not personally used it.
Question: Please share what details can be seen of Saturn and Jupiter. Can the red spot, bands and rings be clearly resolved
Answer: A longer 90mm scope is better for planets and moon, and needs a beefier mount with slo-mo controls. A shorter scope can use the same mount as the 70mm, has a wider field of view which is good for star clusters and nebulae - dimmer objects. There are many more star clusters than there are planets. Both are good for the sun, the 80 is better for comets.

User questions & answers

Question: Refractor with a primary mirror? ? ? What is the f ratio or focal length
Answer: Yes, I believe it will be excellent choice for a starter.
Question: How is the chromatic aberration on this telescope? Have any pictures of dso’s been taken with it
Answer: Have you tried CameraFi? Available on Google Play and many customers like that app.
Question: Would you recoomend the 80 (shorter scopr) or 90 (longer scope) for a first telescope
Answer: No. You need the Windows camera.
Question: Would you recoomend the 80 (shorter scopr) or 90 (longer scope) for a first telescope
Answer: With the scope at maximum height a quarter in focus will occupy the screen top to bottom. The scope can be placed to the side and the stand raised (increasing the focal point) so that larger items will be fully visible. However, longer focal distance decreases magnification of the image. True detail is best at close focal lengths. Hope that helps!

You can also observe deep-sky objects that include galaxies, nebulae, and even binary star systems.
Question: Through this telescope can you see most of the planets
Answer: Not sure what you mean by affecting the telescope. You will need to focus as you normally do in normal operations.
Question: Where is this telescope made
Answer: Yes, the tripod is included
Question: Can you see Mars Jupiter and Saturn
Answer: On a clear night with little light pollution when the andromeda constellation is in the sky, you can see the andromeda galaxy which is approximately 2 million light years away (11700000000000000000 miles away).

Celestron’s Astromaster 90AZ refractor telescope is a good choice for anyone who wants a dual purpose telescope. With more than double the light gathering power of 60mm starter scopes, it’s a great introduction to astronomy and it can double as a long range spotting scope. Bigger and more impressive than it looks in pictures, the Astromaster 90AZ is an adult size telescope that stands nearly five feet high and weighs about 20 pounds. With it’s fully illustrated quick set up guide, the telescope is easy to assemble, and the package includes an erect image prism, high and low power eyepieces, and astronomy software for your PC.

Refractors are known for their crisp, high contrast views of the Moon and planets and the Astromaster 90 delivers sharp views right out of the box. The low power 20mm eyepiece (50X magnification) nicely frames the moon, while the high power 10mm eyepiece (100X magnification) delivers a crisp close up image full of detail. The sharp Achromatic optics of the Astromaster 90AZ show me memorable views night after night. On a moonless night I like the way the 20mm eyepiece frames the ghostly glow of the Orion Nebula. Zooming in with the 10mm eyepiece, I can easily pick out all four stars of the Orion Nebula’s embedded quadruple star the Trapezium.

The AstroMaster 90 AZ also features a newly designed Alt-Azimuth mount and tripod. The tripod comes fully assembled, and the telescope simply clamps into a standard dovetail. This new tripod seems reasonably solid, I had no trouble focusing on the Moon and stars even with the high power eyepiece. An Alt-azimuth mount, of course, is best used at low to medium powers because it does not track the motion of the stars. As soon as you get the Moon centered in the eyepiece, it starts drifting toward the edge-this is caused by rotation of the Earth. Celestial objects will stay in the low power field of view for three or four minutes, but with a high power eyepiece they may disappear in a minute or less.

Celestron’s AstroMaster 90 AZ is one entry level telescope that offers great views during the daytime as well as at night. The sharp optics produce a right side up image, the mount is easy to use, and the included planetarium software helps you find planets in the night sky. --Jeff Phillips

Pros:

  • Crisp clear views both day and night
  • Rugged refractor design
  • Quick and easy no-tool set up
  • Erect image prism and two eyepieces included
Cons:
  • Alt-Azimuth mount doesn’t track stars and planets
  • Star pointer not so easy to use

  • POWERFUL REFRACTOR TELESCOPE: The Celestron AstroMaster 90AZ Refractor telescope is a powerful and user-friendly refractor telescope. It features fully-coated glass optics, a sturdy and lightweight frame, two eyepieces, a StarPointer red dot finderscope and an adjustable tripod.
  • HIGH-QUALITY 90MM OPTICS: The heart of the system is a fully-coated 90mm primary mirror. The AstroMaster mount features a panning handle that allows you to make precision adjustments to view celestial and terrestrial objects.

Whether you’re an amateur astronomer or becoming more comfortable with using a telescope, you’ll love the technology and user-friendly features packed into Celestron’s PowerSeeker refractor telescope. Our PowerSeeker Series telescopes for astronomy beginners have been designed with a combination of value, quality, power, and user-friendly features. Tom Johnson founded Celestron in 1960 after building a telescope to share the night sky with his sons. Since then, Celestron has established itself as the world’s #1 telescope brand. Celestron telescopes are used by scientists in world-class research observatories and even aboard the International Space Station.

Celestron's value priced PowerSeeker 70AZ is an affordable entry level telescope with some nice extras like a correct image prism and "The Sky" astronomy software included. The package also includes an Alt-Azimuth mount with adjustable aluminum tripod, high and low power eyepieces, a 3X barlow lens, and a 5 power cross hair finder scope.

The PowerSeeker 70AZ comes disassembled in a compact box, but the fully illustrated quick set-up guide makes it easy to assemble. Go ahead and try it out in the daytime, that's the best time to align the finder scope while looking at a distant tree or telephone pole.

The optics of the PowerSeeker 70AZ are surprisingly good, especially when I use the low power 20mm eyepiece. The correct image prism and the 20mm eyepiece give me a magnification of 35X, so backyard birds seem five times closer than with my seven power binoculars. The PowerSeeker 70 can be upgraded with standard 1.25 inch telescope eyepieces. A 25mm plossl eyepiece for example gives a true field of view of almost 2 degrees for delightful views of star clusters like the Pleiades, while a 6mm eyepiece provides a magnification of 117X, just right to see the rings of Saturn or the cloud bands on Jupiter. The included 4mm eyepiece (175X magnification) might be too much power: I can see Saturn's rings but at 175X it's not easy to focus and it's not easy to keep planets centered in the field of view.

The Alt-Azimuth mount included with the PowerSeeker 70AZ is lighter and easier to use than an Equatorial mount, but it does not track stars and planets. As soon as you get the Moon centered in the eyepiece it starts drifting toward the edge, this is caused by rotation of the Earth. The Moon may stay in the low power eyepiece for two or three minutes, but with the high power 4mm eyepiece (175X magnification) a star will disappear in only twenty or thirty seconds.

Celestron's PowerSeeker 70AZ is a real value because it has very good achromatic optics in a package that's light, portable and affordable. The drawback is that it has a lot of plastic parts, including the finder scope and the 3X barlow. For a more rugged alternative, take a look at Celestron‘s AstroMaster 70 AZ which comes with better eyepieces and includes a sturdier Alt-Azimuth mount. --Jeff Phillips

Pros:

  • Very good optics
  • Correct image prism
  • Easy no tool set-up
  • Light, portable, and affordable
Cons:
  • Light weight tripod
  • Does not track stars and planets
  • Plastic finder and barlow lens

Product description

If you’re in search of a computerized telescope with the same star locating technology found on our more advanced telescopes at a price that fits your family’s budget, you’ll love the Celestron 114LCM with all glass optics. This computerized Newtonian telescope and its GoTo mount has been designed to automatically locate thousands of celestial objects with a simple push of a button on your NexStar+ hand control. Our proprietary SkyAlign alignment procedure is simple to use, so you’re ready to explore the universe in minutes. The process starts by centering any three bright objects in your telescope’s eyepiece. From there, your LCM can calculate its position and orient itself to the night sky. The 114LCM is built with a lightweight computerized mount that makes this telescope compact, portable, and the perfect companion for star parties, camping trips, and impromptu backyard observing sessions. When the Sky Tour button is pressed, the LCM will populate a list of the best celestial objects visible at that moment in the night sky. The Celestron LCM telescope for adults comes with an adjustable aluminum tripod, two high-quality eyepieces (25mm and 9mm), and a StarPointer red dot finderscope. To enhance your experience under the stars, download Celestron’s free SkyPortal app. Listen to hundreds of audio descriptions of the most popular objects on your iOS or Android device while you observe them with your LCM telescope. User questions & answers

Question: If the battery gets discharged, the telescope still can be used
Answer: Yes Uranus and Neptune can be seen with the naked eye at a dark sky site. The computer will point the telescope to these objects but you will need about 150x magnification to see them as tiny disks.
Question: I feel so dumb I've had such a hard time figuring this telescope out I haven't been able to see anything with it is there any help out there
Answer: This package comes with a 20mm and a 4mm eyepiece. The 20mm is somewhat useful, but the 4mm is frustrating to use due to poor quality, short eye relief, and overly-high magnification. I would replace them with a couple of halfway decent Plössl eyepieces in the 10mm to 32mm range. Celestron's Omni line aren't terribly expensive and offer good views for the money. Other good choices in Plössl eyepieces are those in Orion's Sirius series and Meade's Super Plössls, though they are a little more expensive, generally. But, this scope's objective lens is excellent for the money and warrants the purchase of at least a couple of decent eyepieces.
Question: Is there an accessory available to connect a camera
Answer: I own this particular scope and I've seen each of the planets that I have actively searched for. Through it to this point, I've seen Mercury (although it was in a crescent phase when I saw it, so there wasn't much to it). I have seen Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn (which was my first sight through a telescope - absolutely stunning) and I believe I even caught Neptune - although it was difficult to tell as the conditions of the night in particular were not good. I have not attempted to find Uranus.I've been pleased with this purchased as an introduction to amateur astronomy - the price point and it's performance have been a good mix. I've seen the Andromeda Galaxy (although keep in mind you won't see a Hubble-esque view) and several different nebula. Double stars are easily visible. Seeing Jupiter in good conditions is excellent too - you can make out the stripes if you're lucky and you can very easily spot it's four Galilean moons.
Question: can you see uranus
Answer: The PowerSeeker 80EQ is manufactured in China to Celestron’s specifications.
