13 best compound microscopys
Compound microscopy refers to a type of optical microscopy that utilizes multiple lenses to magnify and observe small objects or specimens. It is a fundamental tool in various scientific fields, including biology, medicine, materials science, and more. Compound microscopes consist of several key components:
Objective Lens: The primary lens closest to the specimen, responsible for magnifying the object. Compound microscopes typically have several objective lenses with different magnification levels, allowing users to switch between them for various levels of detail.
Eyepiece (Ocular Lens): The lens closest to the observer's eye, which further magnifies the image produced by the objective lens. It typically provides a 10x magnification.
Illumination Source: A light source, often located beneath the specimen, used to illuminate it.In modern compound microscopes, this is usually provided by LED bulbs.
Condenser: An optical component that focuses and directs the light onto the specimen, ensuring even illumination.
Stage: A platform where the specimen is placed for observation. It often includes mechanical controls for precise movement of the specimen.
Coarse and Fine Focus Knobs: These knobs allow users to adjust the focus of the microscope. The coarse focus knob makes significant adjustments, while the fine focus knob enables finer adjustments for sharp imaging.
Compound microscopes can be monocular (single eyepiece) or binocular (two eyepieces for stereoscopic viewing). Binocular microscopes are more comfortable for extended use as they reduce eye strain.
To use a compound microscope:
- Place the specimen on the stage and secure it in place using stage clips if necessary.
- Select the lowest magnification objective lens and start with the coarse focus knob to bring the specimen into rough focus.
- Use the fine focus knob for fine adjustments until the specimen is in sharp focus.
- If needed, switch to higher magnification objective lenses for more detail.
Compound microscopes are capable of magnifying specimens to hundreds or even thousands of times their actual size, allowing scientists and researchers to study minute details of biological samples, cells, tissues, and other materials. They are essential tools in various scientific research, medical diagnostics, and educational settings.
In addition to traditional compound microscopes, there are also specialized types like fluorescence microscopes, phase-contrast microscopes, and confocal microscopes, each designed for specific applications and imaging techniques.

User questions & answers
Question: | What are some tricks to getting the 25x to focus and be as sharp at the 10x eyepieces? Can you only use the 25x for the 100x with oil |
Answer: | It really isn’t that useful to use the 25x ocular lenses, the 10x work fine, but using the 25 x reduces the field of view so much that unless you are looking at something and need a small area magnified I suggest you don’t need them. You can use it with the 100x but it won’t work well because it goes above the reducing power of the lens. Pretty much 100 x 10 is the top end of good resolution. |
Question: | Ex i want question about sending date,,if you want sending this microscope to all over the united state,s for us,,how much it long time aboutly |
Answer: | I don't think it took more than a week to arrive |
Question: | Does this have a top light? That lights up things from the top not just from below |
Answer: | Actually I don't think it does have a top light. All of the magnification is up on top and the light is in the base. There are other items you can buy to attach to this scope however like an external viewer for example or to take photographs or a slide. It is a really great scope....as good as the ones I used in college! |
Question: | Is this microscope strong enough to identify and differentiate between species of mold |
Answer: | This is a pretty inexpensive microscope and the optics, while offering up to 2000 x magnification, are not great. Considering Galileo used optics he made himself I would say if you employ ingenuity and creativity you will be able to differentiate mold species. I've seen some amazing things with my microscope. The 2000 magnification uses the oil immersion technique for clarity. |

Question: | Is there anything to prevent a glass slide from being damaged by someone moving the eyepiece too far towards the stage |
Answer: | The stage cannot move up beyond a fixed point. The longest objective lens is the 40X lens; it is the only objective lens that can touch a glass slide when the stage is moved up. Moving the stage up too far, the user will find that the glass slide will touch the 40X lens. However the tip of the 40X lens does retract 3 mm, minimizing the possibility of damage to the glass slide. I have not broken a glass slide yet with the SW200DL. |
Question: | How to replace batteries in my microscope how to open battery compartment |
Answer: | Dear Lisa, Thank you for your question. First, you need to unscrew the battery case lid from the bottom of the unit with the allen wrench comes with the package. Then you will see a “Right Arrow” mark on the cover of the battery case, push the cover to the right and the case can be opened. Please kindly let us know if any questions. All the best Annie |

Product Description
Created for middle and high school-aged students as well as hobbyists looking for an upgrade, the Swift SW200DL monocular compound microscope packs a powerful punch in a solid frame. With its multi-purpose dual illumination system, the SW200DL is a portable microscope built to take you from at-home experiments to science fairs and beyond!
The SW200DL features the optics, sturdy metal body, carrying handle, and cordless capability of our SW200 model, upgraded with a two-in-one-illumination system for our strongest, most versatile compound monocular microscope to date! One LED bulb provides cool, dimmable transmitted light from below the stage for transparent slide specimens. An additional built-in light on the arm converts the microscope to a stereo setting by offering illumination from above for solid objects at low magnifications. Magnification levels range from 40-1000X. Three aberration-correcting glass DIN objective lenses (4X, 10X, and 40X) paired with two wide-field glass eyepieces (10X and 25X) offer sharp images without edge blur. The monocular head is fixed at an ergonomic 45 degree angle to prevent neck-strain and fully rotates to enable sharing between multiple users, ideal for classroom or one-on-one instruction. Precision coaxial focusing knobs on both sides of the metal arm allow you to make minute adjustments easily. Clips on the plain stage fully secure slides.
What Can You See with It? Magnify both transparent slide specimens and the surfaces of solid, opaque objects with the SW200DL's dual illumination system. Look at cell structures, onion skin cross-section, pollen, human hair, leaves, and more!

Product features
The Swift SW350B is a workhorse of a compound binocular microscope, providing incredibly sharp magnification and ergonomic usability.
Features a Siedentopf binocular head that rotates 360 degrees for easy shared use and allows for quick adjustments to the eyepieces for different interpupillary distances without losing focus. The swiveling head can also lock in any position for additional stability. Ocular tubes are tilted at an ergonomic 30 degrees to reduce neck and eye strain. The microscope comes with two interchangeable widefield 10X and 25X glass ocular eyepieces, which pair with the four achromatic DIN objectives -- 4X, 10X, 40X(Spring), and 100X(Spring, Oil) -- in the rotating nosepiece to provide 6 magnification levels between 40X and 2500X. Coarse and fine focusing dials on both sides of the metal arm make fluid and exact precision adjustments.
For specimen viewing, an LED bulb beneath the stage transmits light up through an industry-standard Abbe condenser with 1.25 aperture and an iris diaphragm. Manually move the condenser closer to or farther from the stage to adjust brightness and evenness of light as well as image contrast. A metal slide holder locks specimens into place for viewing on the sizeable double-layered mechanical stage. An x-y translational control knob moves the stage and the slide holder left-to-right and front-to-back, eliminating the need to re-clip slides in order to view the entire specimen.
The SW350B has a compact but solid body that is nonetheless easily portable with the built-in arm handle.
What can you see with it? Compound microscopes offer detailed, cellular-level views of transparent or dyed specimens prepared and mounted on a slide. (For magnifying solid objects, use a stereo microscope.)
