11 best stabilizer binoculars

Stabilizer binoculars, also known as image-stabilized binoculars, are a type of binoculars that incorporate stabilization technology to minimize image shake and provide a steady view, especially when viewing distant or moving objects. These binoculars are commonly used in a variety of fields, including wildlife observation, marine activities, and astronomy, where a stable and clear view is crucial.

Here are some key features and benefits of stabilizer binoculars:

  1. Image Stabilization: The primary feature of stabilizer binoculars is their built-in stabilization technology. This technology often involves gyroscopic or electronic systems that detect and compensate for hand tremors and vibrations, resulting in a steady image.

  2. Improved Viewing Experience: Stabilizer binoculars offer a significantly improved viewing experience, especially when using higher magnification binoculars. They make it easier to follow moving subjects or maintain a stable view of distant objects, reducing eye strain and enhancing clarity.

  3. Versatility: These binoculars are versatile and can be used for a wide range of activities such as birdwatching, boating, hunting, and sports events. They are also popular among astronomers for stargazing.

  4. Magnification Options: Stabilizer binoculars come in various magnification options, so you can choose the right model based on your specific needs. Common magnifications include 8x, 10x, and 12x.

  5. Durability: Many stabilizer binoculars are built to withstand harsh outdoor conditions. They are often water-resistant or waterproof, making them suitable for marine and wet environments.

  6. Battery-Powered: The stabilization technology requires power, so these binoculars typically use batteries. Users should ensure they have an adequate power source when using them for extended periods.

  7. Price Range: Stabilizer binoculars can vary significantly in price, depending on their brand, features, and image quality. High-end models tend to offer more advanced stabilization and optics, while budget-friendly options may have simpler stabilization systems.

Overall, stabilizer binoculars are a valuable tool for anyone who requires a steady and clear view of distant subjects. They offer improved image stability and can greatly enhance the overall viewing experience, making them a popular choice for outdoor enthusiasts and professionals alike.

Canon 18x50 Image Stabilization All-Weather Binoculars w/Case, Neck Strap & Batteries

Canon

Based on 224 reviews Check latest price

Product description

High-Power, Large Binoculars Perfect for Star Gazing or When You Cant Get Close Enough. (Featuring an Image Stabilizer and All-Weather design). With its wide 50mm objective lenses and high magnification, these rugged, all-weather Canon Image Stabilizer binoculars are destined to set a new and higher benchmark for image brightness, clarity and ergonomic design. Filter size: 58 mm, Closest Focusing Distance: 19.7 feet, Exit Pupil Diameter: 2.8mm, Eye Relief: 15mm.

Canon's 18x50 IS binoculars incorporate an optical image stabilizer for shake-free viewing and minimal eye fatigue. This technology was first developed for Canon video camcorders and is now available in many of Canon's binoculars. The system employs a Vari-Angle Prism, dual transparent plates, independent vertical and horizontal sensors, and a dedicated microprocessor to continuously adjust the prism to maintain a steady image.

The 18x50 IS binoculars feature a water-resistant, shock-resistant rubber coating for a nonslip grip and better durability. If you get caught in the rain and still want to view, you don't have to worry about the optics fogging up. These binoculars deliver high magnification and wide-field viewing. Controls for focusing and image stabilization are centrally located and accessible by both hands. These binoculars provide long eye relief for extra comfort.

Image Stabilization and More

With any high magnification binoculars, most users will experience frustrating image shake. Unless fixed to a tripod, image shake can render high magnification binoculars useless. Canon's IS technology is remarkably effective at eliminating this problem and is widely used by the television industry with Canon's professional broadcast quality video recording equipment. A special VAP (Vari-Angle Prism) corrective IS system sits between the objective lens group and the porro prism on each side of the binoculars. Within thousandths of a second of the binoculars being moved from their optical axis by vibrations, a detection system activates the IS mechanism. The VAP shape alters to refract or 'bend' the light path by precisely the right amount, thus fully compensating for the vibration. It is this essentially immediate response that effectively suppresses image shake.

Super Spectra Coating

A number of optical factors affect the brightness of an image, including the amount of incidental light that is reflected by the lens. An uncoated lens will refelect away as much as 8% of the incidentail light, significantly dimming the image. Canon's Super Spectra Coating prevents that reflection.

What do the numbers mean?

15x50? 8x25? The two numbers used to describe any pair of binoculars are their magnification — 8x, 12x, 15x and so on — and the diameter of their objective lenses — 25mm, 36mm, 50mm, and so on. The larger the first number is, the larger the object will appear to be in the objective lens. For instance, if you use a 10x lens and look at an object that is 100 yards away, it appears to be the same size as an object located just 10 yards away. The second number, the size of the objective lens, is important because the larger the objective lens, the more light it can admit for brighter, more detailed images, and the better suited they will be for lowlight situations.

  • 18x magnification
  • Built-in optical image stabilization uses 2 AA batteries
  • Wide, extra-bright field of view

User questions & answers

Question: Do they come with a case and a strap
Answer: Yes they came with a case and a strap. Strangely they only come with two lens caps leaving two lens uncapped.
Question: Do the Binoculars come with batteries
Answer: 12x36 come with AA batteries. You do not have to use rechargeable. Any AA battery will work
Question: Has anyone used these on a 24 foot boat in moderate conditions
Answer: Yes and no. I've used them on an 18 foot boat in various conditions. They won't stop the up and down of the boat. So they won't "level" out everything. They will stop or level out your unsteadiness, to a degree. Let me put it to you this way; They won't be like you are on the hard, but they will be better than anything else.
Question: What can I do about the outside getting sticky and turns my hands black? Thank you
Answer: No, Deet and oils from your hands is not the problem. Both my Cannon binoculars have the sticky, gooey problem and I only used them with clean hands and have always stored them in a cool place. It happens when the polymer crosslinks break apart, a very well know process. There is no cure and oxygen if the main culprit. Why Cannon doesn't use a better shell for the binoculars is something beyond me. Cannon is a dishonest company. I have spent $1600 on the two binoculars and feel like this company has ripped me off since they have know of the problem for years! They still deny its a problem!!!

User questions & answers

Question: Does it come with a case or a strap
Answer: It does not have a tripod screw, so basically, no. You would have to find a clamp head for your tripod that could hold onto the binoculars.
Question: Is this waterproof
Answer: Yes. Two straps: One for the soft carrying case, which adjusts from about 14 to 26 inches, and one for the binoculars, which adults from about 10 to 15 inches.
Question: Do these come with a front lens cover
Answer: It weighs 1 lb. 14 5/8 oz. with strap and lens covers. I put lens covers on the objective end to protect it; Televue Ethos fit well with a round of blue painters tape on the inside. There have been reports of problems with the older models if stored vertically, so I store them horizontally. There is a lot of CA(blue fringing) if not in perfect focus and spot on eye width adjustment, but quite OK if these are very accurate. You still need a reasonably steady hand but if you do this they are almost equal to having them on a tripod. Amazing really. Takes 2 AA batteries, preferably lithium(best Energizer Ultimate). These work best in the cold and last longest. Expensive but well worth it IMO.
Question: what is the pupil to pupil measurement
Answer: Contact CANON USA. They are at phone #800-OK-CANON.
