Celestron - SkyMaster Giant 15x70 Binoculars - Top Rated Astronomy Binoculars - Binoculars for Stargazing and Long Distance Viewing - Includes Tripod Adapter and Case

Celestron

Based on 5 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Celestron’s SkyMaster series of large aperture binoculars are a phenomenal value for high performance binoculars ideal for astronomical viewing or for terrestrial (land) use - especially over long distances. Each SkyMaster model features high quality BaK-4 prisms and multi-coated optics for enhanced contrast. Celestron has designed and engineered the larger SkyMaster models to meet the special demands of extended astronomical or terrestrial viewing sessions.

Binoculars come in a wide range of shapes and sizes these days, and an even wider range of prices. It's easy to spend less than $100 or more than $500 for what may appear to be, at least outwardly, comparable models. While they may look the same, they are probably quite different on the inside.

Recently, the binocular market has seen a flood of giant binoculars at prices that were unheard of just a few years ago. In general, giant binoculars are defined as those that magnify the view 10 times or more and have 70-mm or larger front (objective) lenses. It used to be that the least expensive giant binoculars cost in excess of $150, even $200. All that changed not long ago, when the bottom fell out of the price cellar. Now, several companies import giant binoculars that sell for half that, or less.

Celestron's 15x70 SkyMaster binoculars are one of the leaders in the low-price giant binocular arena. They certainly sound good on paper. The SkyMasters include multicoated optics and BaK-4 internal prisms, two features that promise brighter, better images, and key points to look for when judging a pair of binoculars. They also come with an adapter for attaching them to a photo tripod, which is a must to use them to their fullest, and a soft carrying case. But just because they are cheap doesn't always mean they are worth the price. Would it be better to save up for a more expensive pair?

To find the answer, I had an opportunity recently to judge the SkyMasters against a pair of Fujinon 16x70 FMT-SX binoculars , one of the finest pairs of giant binoculars sold today. Like the SkyMasters, the Fujinons feature BaK-4 prisms, but also have fully multicoated optics. As a general rule, superior coatings mean superior image sharpness and contrast. But then, that should be expected, given that the Fujinons cost many times more than the Celestrons.

While the Fujinons were clearly the better performer, the Celestron SkyMasters held up admirably. Image brightness, quality, and contrast were all remarkable considering their bargain price. Although images were a little soft across the outer 25% of the Celestron's field, the overall view was impressive nonetheless.

Some inexpensive binoculars have very sloppy focusing, causing the eyepieces to tilt and shift. Not so with the SkyMasters. I found that their center-focusing mechanism worked smoothly, with no apparently backlash or wobble. Eye relief (the distance you hold your eyes away from the eyepieces to see the full field) is stated to be 18 mm, a good distance for higher power binoculars and an important consideration if you must wear glasses when viewing. The SkyMasters are also light enough to support by hand for short periods of time, although buyers would be well advised to mount them on a sturdy photo tripod.

The bottom line is, if you are considering a pair of giant binoculars, whether for bird watching, stargazing, or another recreational use, and have a limited budget, Celestron's giant 15x70 SkyMasters represent an excellent value. --Phil Harrington, author of Star Ware and Star Watch

Pros:

  • Exceptional value for the price
  • Light enough to support by hand
  • BaK-4 prisms
  • Multicoated optics
Cons:
  • Outer 25% of the field is soft and a little blurry
  • Requires a tripod to use for extended periods

User questions & answers

Question: how does the tripod adpater hook on? I got it today but im confused how that part hooks on? and then to the tripod
Answer: Hi, in the middle of the skymaster, there is one circled logo of Celestron cap. Please remove by unscrew this. You can able to hook the tripod. Thanks.
Question: why do so many people prefer these over the 20x80 and 25x
Answer: 15x is at the upper limit of what can be hand held. Higher powers would need a tripod to be steady enough. Even at 15x some people would need a tripod or something to lean against. Lower powers give wider fields of view and brighter images. Large binoculars such as 80mm are heavy and need a tripod regardless of magnification. If you want both bright images and high powers look into larger binoculars such as 80 or 100mm.
Question: can one side be adjusted seperately for my vision? I have decent vision in left eye and poor vision in right eye. thanks
Answer: Yes, first use the center adjustment to get it focused correctly for the left eye...now close your left eye and look only thru your right eye and adjust the right eyepiece until it comes into focus. Now you should be able to see clearly with both eyes!
Question: I wondering why so many people have said these work better than their telescopes? If these are 15x and a cheap tele is 100x why are these so great
Answer: The principal feature of a telescope is not magnification, but light gathering power. These 70mm binoculars gather about as much light as a 100mm telescope. But since you are using both eyes, the view will appear better. But even in my case, with a 13" diameter mirror in my scope, before I look for anything my binoculars are out checking out the field of view and much of the time even showing me what my telescope will be looking at. Binoculars force you to learn the sky and not be dependent on any coordinate system. They show you larger objects like the double cluster in Perseus, the Pleiades and Hyades star clusters in Taurus, the Beehive cluster in Cancer and even the Andromeda Galaxy better than you can in a telescope because you simply get to see the object in context. There are some large, face-on galaxies like M-33 and M-101, which are easier to spot in these binoculars than they are in a 10" telescope. Without the context of the black sky behind the object there is no contrast and you can't see it.Even with a large telescope, you'll spend most of your time observing at under 100 power. Selling telescopes by magnification is just taking advantage of newbies because you can obtain any magnification with any telescope depending on what eyepiece you use. The question is "will you be able to see anything?"

User questions & answers

Question: Are these to heavy to use on a boat? To check out other boats or view things that may help with navigation or hazards. Spotting moorings ECt
Answer: Perfect for maritime use. As a retired Navy officer used to using binocs from the bridge of a ship these do the job. I use them on my 19 foot fishing boat and have tied on a light weight float to them in the even a grandson drops them overboard
Question: I know NOTHING about binoculars. I am looking for a decent pair for my husband who would be using them for police surveillance. Are these suitable
Answer: No. Too powerful. Any magnification over 10x reduces the field of view seriously. Your husband will have a hard time finding the objects he wants to view, and, when they move suddenly, as in any kind of action, it will be hard to keep the binoculars on target. A pair of inexpensive (
Question: Tripods for 25x70. Do I use the small Barska adapter or the screw on the bottom of binocs? What type tripod? If known, what's the exact name
Answer: TRIPOD: Recommended tripod must take at least 4 lbs and upwards, I'd recommend this tripod; http://www.amazon.com/66-inch-Heavy-Duty-Tripod-Bag/dp/B00EVC9PQI/ADAPTER: The adapter included with the binoculars will work but to me its a bit too flimsy. I'll recommend http://www.amazon.com/Barska-AF10546-BARSKA-Binocular-Adaptor/dp/B000BYH8EQ/SCREW HOLES: The screw holes on the binoculars is located between the two outer objective lens and is covered with a cap which has the Celestron logo. Just unscrew the cap and you'll see the 1/4 inch hole where you'll attach the tripod adapter. The tripod adapter will now be attached to the tripod plate with 1/4 inch 20 screw, then you attach the tripod plate to the tripod and you can now enjoy your viewing.
Question: I'm looking for some that would be good for plane spotting at low & high altitudes. Would these work
Answer: That is one of the primary reason I bought the 25x70's. I also have the 15x70's but for plane observation the 25's get you closer. At 35,000 feet (as a reviewer said before) you can see the printing on the plane on a clear crisp day. At night, and this is amazing to me, you can see the windows of the plane with the light coming out of them. If the planes are lower, the views are even more spectacular. NOW, you WILL need a TRIPOD with a VIDEO HEAD to help you keep the binoculars steady and to track the plane. I also recommend the Planefinder App so you know what is flying over you and what is approaching your area. I spend hours looking at the flight traffic over my house and these 25x70's are perfect and totally add to my enjoyment of looking at high altitude aircraft.

Product description

SkyMaster Pro binoculars are the ideal choice for amateur astronomers or anyone that observes at great distances. Compared to lower-priced large aperture binoculars, SkyMaster Pro uses superior optics, coatings, internal parts and housing materials. With large objective lenses, BaK-4 prisms and fully multi-coated optics utilizing Celestron’s proprietary XLT coating technology, the view through a SkyMaster Pro is second to none at this price point. Massive Objective Lenses - The 80 mm objective lenses have tremendous light gathering capabilities, delivering superior low light performance, even in the dimmest conditions. Choose SkyMaster Pro for use at dusk, dawn and nighttime astronomical viewing. Fully Multi-Coated Optics and BaK-4 Prisms - Every air-to-glass surface is multi-coated with Celestron’s proprietary XLT coating technology. These coatings coupled with BaK-4 prisms increase light transmission through the optical path and deliver crisp, high contrast images with outstanding resolution. Built in Tripod Adapter and RSR “Reflex Sight Ready” Rail - The built in tripod adapter of the SkyMaster Pro 20x80 not only allows the binocular to be attached to a tripod for added stability but it also acts as a balance rail by sliding along the center support rod. A red-dot finder can also be attached to the center support rod utilizing the removable rail. When properly aligned with the binocular, the red-dot finder will allow objects to be brought into view quickly. Lightweight, Waterproof Construction - The polycarbonate and aluminum housing allows the binocular to be lighter weight without sacrificing its durability. The housing with protective rubber armor is extremely rugged and durable with the ability to handle tough use. The fully waterproof housing for use in all weather conditions provides peace of mind when unexpected weather rolls in. The housing is also filled with dry nitrogen gas to prevent the internal lenses from fogging when moving between extreme temperatures or when using the binocular in damp conditions. Enhanced Magnification - Bring distant objects into view with 20x magnification—great for observing celestial objects in greater detail, searching for wildlife in the brush or viewing a distant object on the horizon.

  • Large 80 mm objective lenses for excellent light gathering in low light conditions or for astronomical observing
  • Detachable RSR rail for attaching an optional red dot finderscope
  • Rubber armored for improved ergonomics and protection from every day use in the field
  • Waterproof and nitrogen purged for use in all weather conditions

User questions & answers

Question: I'd like to make sure i'll be able to look at the sun before i buy these binos. any tailor-made sun filters for this model? if not,any suggestions?tks
Answer: You’ll have to search for any purpose made filters. Lacking those, if you have a solar filter for a telescope, mine for an 8” Celestron C8, you can create a homemade mount to hold that filter in front if the binos.
Question: Why are there no pockets on the carrying case? No place to put the extra eyecups, lens cloth, or red dot rail
Answer: I often wonder why not all dresses have pockets either. Probably the same reason airlines stopped serving meals.
Question: what is the difference between the 20 x 80 Celestron binoculars and the 20 x 80 "Pro" binoculars
Answer: Waterproof and nitrogen purged for use in all weather conditions and can accommodate a red dot finder scope. Celestron apparently had quality control problems with this product. I returned the first order due to color aberration.
Question: Can we zoom
Answer: No

Product description

Not all binoculars are created equal, especially when they are expected to perform well in low light conditions. Observations during twilight and at night require larger optics to collect as much light as possible, but big lenses alone are not enough to ensure a superior viewing experience. It also takes quality glass and rugged construction to keep your binoculars safe and working well for years to come. Celestron’s large-aperture Echelon series binoculars were designed for use in low light conditions. Whether you are long-range glassing across a field or valley, or gazing at the splendors of the Milky Way, a pair of Celestron Echelon binoculars will get the job done. With an exit pupil of 3.5 mm, these binoculars deliver an amazing amount of light allowing you to see the most detail possible. The Echelon 20x70 model offers the highest magnification in the Echelon Series. Choose this model for picking out small subjects at the longest distances, or for high-magnification viewing of celestial objects. Superb Optical Quality - Celestron Echelon binoculars sport high quality 70 mm objective lenses made in Japan. Superior BaK-4 prisms were chosen for maximum contrast and sharpness, and all air-to-glass surfaces are multi-coated with Celestron’s proprietary XLT optical coatings—the same high transmission coatings used on our observatory-grade telescopes to increase contrast and resolution. Assembled in the USA - Celestron Echelon binoculars are manufactured using quality Japanese optics and are assembled by hand by skilled technicians in Southern California. Quality Construction - Each Echelon binocular housing is made of aluminum alloy, to keep them strong yet lightweight, an important factor when considering a big binocular purchase. Durable rubber armor covers the aluminum housing for a slip-free grip and protection against the occasional bump or ding. These binoculars are fully waterproof and are nitrogen-purged to seal the optics against fog, dew, and other forms of moisture. This means you can use your Echelon binocular in damp conditions without having to pack up and call it a day when unexpected weather makes an appearance. Includes Waterproof Hard Case - Echelon binoculars come with a high quality waterproof hard case for ultimate protection against dust, moisture, and rough handling. A molded foam insert cradles the binoculars perfectly, keeping them safe and sound no matter where your journeys take you! Individual Focus - Echelon binoculars use an individual eye focus system, enabling you to rotate each eyepiece to set the proper focus for your right and left eye. Once set, you should be able to use your binoculars at a moment’s notice and focus sharply at infinity, the normal distance desired for long-range observations. Should you wish to share your binocular with others, it is fast and simple to adjust the focus for their vision requirements. Extended Eye Relief - The Celestron 20x70 Echelon Binoculars have 19.5 mm of eye relief, making them comfortable for all users, whether they wear eyeglasses or not. The rubber eyecups position your eyes at the perfect distance from the optics for a full field of view. Tripod Adaptable - Echelon binoculars are easily attached to a photographic tripod for extended observing sessions. A binocular tripod adapter (sold separately) is used to make the connection between the binoculars and a standard tripod, and is especially helpful for vibration-free observations of the night sky.

  • Enjoy low light observing with these large aperture 70 millimeter binoculars.  Their 3.5 millimeter exit pupil allows you to see amazing detail, even in the shadows.  Also great for astronomy
  • Fully waterproof for protection against the elements and nitrogen-purged to prevent internal fogging
  • Hand assembled in the USA from high quality Japanese optics, using Celestron’s proprietary XLT coating technology for superior optical performance
  • Includes a durable, waterproof hard case for protection
  • Tripod adaptable for long observing sessions or when you want to share the view with others

User questions & answers

Question: As far as performance, how does celestron nature dx 10x50 compare to the celestron granite "ed" 10x50 model
Answer: The physics of light need to be considered. The camera is not a light emitter, so only reflection is relevant. Light reflects off at an angle equal to the angle at which the light hits the red surface. So with an object to be photographed close to the lens, if the light (sun) is shining from behind the photographer, there will be no reflection since the photographer is blocking the sunlight. If the sun is shining from the side of the photographer, the angle of reflection will glance that light off to the side (opposite the sun) of the object to be photographed. In order to have the low angle of reflection off the red surface that could hit the object to be photographed and appear in the image, the sun would have to be almost directly hitting the red camera surface from almost directly in front of the camera , and where the object to be photographed would seem to be mostly blocking the sun in a macro type of image capture. I'm struggling to see how this happens, but I do understand black as a color that absorbs light.
Question: Does it come with lens caps
Answer: Yes. Good idea using solar through a USB port.
Question: How good is the eye relief of the 10x42 and the 10x50 (I wear glasses)? What is the best model for bird/wildlife watching
Answer: 1. press the OK key in the middle of the 4 way keypad to bring up the quick menu.2. arrow up or down to get to the file format setting (it should be right under aspect ratio 4:33. arrow left or right to select RAW, LF+RAW, LN+RAW etc. RAW will just produce a RAW file, LF+RAW will produce both a jpeg (Large Fine) and a RAW each time you take a picture.Good luck, I hope that helps.Sean
Question: Has anybody ever used a Nikon 7548 Monarch 7 and if so how does the Celestron 71370 compare in performance
Answer: Unfortunately, a battery charger is a separate item. If you want to recharge the battery we must use the camera to house the battery. Is my understanding

User questions & answers

Question: How would I go about using a tripod with these? What items would I need to get
Answer: These are only 7x binoculars. You won't need a tripod until you get into higher magnifications. 7x50 used to be good standard binoculars for decades, because it offered enough magnification while still being able to easily hand-hold them steadily. At 10x it starts to get more difficult to keep them steady. 50mm lenses in them are just large enough to make images bright & sharp enough to see clear even in shady areas, shadows, & star gazing.
Question: Can the focus be adjusted for near-sightedness
Answer: Yes, it can be adjusted on the right eye piece to compensate for near sightedness. Helps me a lot since I have astigmatism in my right eye.
Question: What are the farthest objects in the night sky that one could see with this specific pair of binoculars? Can you see any planets
Answer: Well technically one can see the great Andromeda galaxy (M31) with relative ease and good resolution in the night sky. The galaxy is about 2.5 million light years from earth (15 million-trillion miles), which is pretty far away Other objects that can be well studied with these binoculars include the Orion Nebula (1600 light years away), the craters on the moon, the pleadies star cluster (425 light years away), and much more. One can study planets using these binoculars too. With these, one can make out the 4 largest moons of Jupiter, and the elliptical shape of Saturn and its rings. I've also used these to locate the distant planets Neptune and Uranus I'm the sky. Ultimately the quality of viewing will depend on dark-sky conditions (light pollution, etc)These are good binoculars for their price.
Question: Will these be good for hunting
Answer: Hey, I am completely, 100%, AGAINST hunting! Make that 2000X against it. But, for the love of Peat- leave the (may I assume you are a man?) alone. He asked a simple, genuine question, and you 3 jump on the man, ridicule him and make him a target ( no pun intended), for your sanctimonious vitriol on him. I hate the NRA, hunting, etc. but you know nothing about him and you judge him. Yea! Such BIG BOYS, hiding behind a screen, judging someone you haver met. But I would PROMISE you this, if an asteroid hit 1/2 the earth and we were scavengening for food, starving , I am going to be glad to be around the person who knows how to hunt food for my children. You don't have to agree with someone's principles, but it doesn't give you the right to be cruel. Shame on you!

User questions & answers

Question: Can you suggest an appropriate monopod? Thanks
Answer: The binoculars have hinge between each side which can be adjusted for eye spacing. A fit depends on whether your 6 year old has eyes spaced far enough apart to meet the limited range of adjustment. My guess is that a child with glasses would be within the range of adjustment.
Question: what is the shortest focus distance
Answer: All screws and bolts are not tightened. Tighten up all screws on both .
Question: Are these suitable for bird watching? Specificaly birds of prey
Answer: I had the problem also, double images. My daughter that’s a birder, mastered the things immediately. For me they are heavy and need to be on a tripod. I know that’s not much help, but practice seem to help
Question: Would I be able to see the rings of Saturn with the binocs
Answer: I don’t understand this question, but it seems:rather important. Can we get a clear answer?
