6 best shotgun microphones with shock mounts

Shotgun microphones with shock mounts are essential tools in the field of professional audio and video recording. They are commonly used in various settings, including film production, television broadcasting, live sound reinforcement, and more. Here's what you need to know about shotgun microphones and their associated shock mounts:

  1. Shotgun Microphones:

    • Directionality: Shotgun microphones are highly directional, which means they capture sound primarily from the direction they are pointed. This makes them ideal for isolating and capturing specific sounds while minimizing background noise.
    • Long and Narrow Design: These microphones have a long, narrow tube-like structure, which helps in achieving their directional pickup pattern. The interference tube design plays a crucial role in their performance.
  2. Applications:

    • Film and Video Production: Shotgun microphones are commonly used in filmmaking and video production to capture high-quality audio for dialogue and ambient sound. They can be mounted on boom poles or directly on the camera.
    • Broadcasting: In television and radio broadcasting, shotgun microphones are used for live reporting, interviews, and news coverage to capture clear and focused audio even in noisy environments.
    • Field Recording: Sound engineers and nature documentarians use shotgun microphones to record sounds in the field, such as wildlife noises or natural environments.
  3. Shock Mounts:

    • Purpose: Shock mounts are accessories designed to isolate the shotgun microphone from vibrations and handling noise. They prevent vibrations from reaching the microphone diaphragm, ensuring cleaner audio recordings.
    • Design: Shock mounts typically consist of a suspension system that holds the microphone in place while providing some level of elasticity to absorb shocks and vibrations. This can include rubber bands, elastic cords, or other dampening materials.
    • Compatibility: Shock mounts are often designed to fit specific shotgun microphones, ensuring a secure and snug fit. Some shock mounts are universal and can accommodate a range of microphones.
  4. Accessories:

    • Windshields and Blimps: To further improve audio quality, shotgun microphones are often used with windshields and blimps. These accessories help reduce wind noise when recording outdoors and protect the microphone from environmental elements.
    • Extension Cables: Depending on the setup, extension cables may be required to connect the shotgun microphone to the recording equipment, especially when using boom poles.
  5. Polar Patterns: Shotgun microphones typically have a supercardioid or hypercardioid polar pattern. This ensures that they capture sound from a narrow frontal area while rejecting sound from the sides and rear.

  6. Price Range: The cost of shotgun microphones with shock mounts can vary widely, with professional-grade models often being more expensive due to their superior audio quality and durability.

In summary, shotgun microphones with shock mounts are indispensable tools in the world of professional audio and video recording.Their highly directional pickup patterns and shock-absorbing mounts enable them to capture high-quality audio in various challenging environments, making them a valuable asset for professionals in the industry.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you plug this into a MacBook pro and use it for zoom exercise sessions where the exerciser is a few feet away
Answer: Perhaps, but I'm not a Mac user so can't be sure. I suspect you will find cheaper options since quality is not the issue for Zoom. Any little shotgun mic mounted on your camera is probably enough for you. This is a great mic and probably more than you need.
Question: Can this microphone package be used for computer online meeting and on dslr camera? if yes, are cables included? what cables would be needed
Answer: Yes an you’d need some things for all of those scenarios. You can plug the microphone into your sale camera provided the camera has an XLR port on it. But the microphone requires phantom power as well, so your camera will also need to be able to provide phantom power. Most cameras don’t have an XLR port or phantom power so I wouldn’t recommend trying this method. The easiest way to do it would be to buy an audio interface like a Scarlett 2i2. The interface plugs into your computer and the microphone would plug into the Scarlett 2i2 or whichever audio interface you choose. The audio interface also provides phantom power. In more clear words, the mic plugs into the audio interface, the audio interface plugs into your computer, and then your mic is hooked up to your computer to use in zoom calls, FaceTime, or whatever you want to use. Just make sure in the video calling app you have your audio input set as the audio interface. Hope that helped!
Question: What distances do these microphones cover? Do they work at 6 or more feet away from the performer, singer? I'm curious
Answer: I’ve shot at about 7 feet away and had to boost the levels in post. But I’m using the zcam e2 which has a great preamp. Would say anything past 6 feet is moving into the danger zone (Tom cruise). With our gh4 4 foot and the audio was still useable. Never pushed it passed that though. Hope this helps.
Question: I own this mic and cant screw it open to replace the battery (its stuck) - any advice
Answer: Lefty loosy, righty tighty
