12 best line conditioner surges
Line conditioners are devices used to improve the quality of electrical power supplied to electronic equipment by regulating voltage, reducing noise, and protecting against surges and spikes. Here's some information about line conditioners and surges:
Line Conditioners: Line conditioners, also known as power line conditioners or voltage regulators, are designed to ensure that the electrical power supplied to sensitive electronic equipment remains within acceptable voltage and frequency ranges. They serve several purposes:
Voltage Regulation: Line conditioners maintain a consistent voltage level, preventing overvoltage (surges) and undervoltage (sags or brownouts) from reaching connected devices.
Noise Reduction: They filter out electrical noise and interference, such as electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency interference (RFI), which can degrade the performance of sensitive electronics.
Surge Protection: Line conditioners often include surge protection features to guard against voltage spikes or surges that can result from lightning strikes or other electrical disturbances.
Surges and Spikes: Electrical surges and spikes are sudden, short-duration increases in voltage that can damage or disrupt electronic equipment. These surges can be caused by various factors, including lightning strikes, power grid issues, or switching operations on the electrical system. Surges can lead to:
Component Damage: Excessive voltage can damage electronic components, including circuit boards, power supplies, and microprocessors.
Data Loss: Surges can corrupt or erase data stored on electronic devices, including computers and storage devices.
Equipment Failure: Sudden voltage spikes can cause equipment to malfunction or fail completely.
Protection: Line conditioners typically include surge protection mechanisms, such as surge suppression circuits or surge arrestors, to safeguard connected equipment from voltage surges and spikes. These mechanisms divert excess voltage away from the equipment and into a grounding path.
Usage: Line conditioners are commonly used in settings where stable and clean power is critical, such as data centers, medical facilities, industrial environments, and for protecting sensitive home electronics like computers and home theaters.
Types: There are various types of line conditioners available, ranging from simple voltage regulators to more advanced models with additional features like automatic voltage regulation (AVR), battery backup (UPS), and isolation transformers.
In summary, line conditioners play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and longevity of electronic equipment by stabilizing voltage, reducing noise, and providing surge protection. They are essential for environments where power quality is a concern, helping to prevent damage and downtime caused by electrical surges and fluctuations.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this eliminate torroidal transformer hum in an audio amp that may be caused by dc in the line? If not, what |
Answer: | No. The LCnn00 will only condition VOLTAGE level (increase/decrease) over a nominal level. To reduce line NOISE you should look for the "Isolation Transformer-Based Power Conditioner - Superior line noise reduction and spike suppression" models (IS250 as an example). Be sure to get the capacity required for your needs. |
Question: | I'm trying to find a good AVR for room heaters (portable ceramic & quartz). Would this work or just shutdown (like the OptiUPS |
Answer: | David, This is not a true AVR in my opinion, it is a step voltage device that boosts the power by way of transformers that are dependent on the voltage it's getting from the wall. I had a customer with intermittently low voltage and it does not regulate to steady voltage. You can't expect this device to provide constant voltage if your drawing higher than expected amps on the circuit. If your UPS is shutting down, your probably pulling to much power for that device and a AVR will not resolve that. You didn't mention what your total wattage draw was or what the amp rating on the circuit your using or if you have a low voltage condition and all of these things figure in to your situation. I ended up getting a true AVR (low AC voltage to DC to Stable AC again at a constant 120 volts) Triplight I think it was and all that really does is provide constant, clean 120 volts AC. So don't know if this is really what you need. |
Question: | Will it smooth out square waves |
Answer: | The LC1800 is designed to provide surge protection and provide a steady 120 vac power to connected equipment. It is not designed to smooth out square waves. We have other products in our offering however that may be a better fit for your application. For additional information please reach out to our presales applications team at 773-869-1773 or [email protected] |
Question: | will this work with 3500 watt portable generator |
Answer: | Yes, it will work as the wattage size of the generator does not matter. You are just limited by the amount of wattage you plug into the Tripp Lite unit. For the LC1200 you should not exceed 1200 watts. Just add up the wattage of each item you plug into it and keep it under 1200 watts. If your item only displays amps then take that number and multiply it by the voltage which is 120v. Ohms law, amps x voltage = watts. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the let through rating on this surge protector |
Answer: | Electrical Rating: 15A, 1800 Watt; Voltage protection rating L-N 400V, L-G 400V, N-G 400V. Type 3 SPD. I like it because of the extra long cord! |
Question: | Anyone know what amount of current will pop the breaker on this? I assume 15 amps can't seem to confirm that |
Answer: | I have tested it with a 600 Watts Oster Blender and a Bosch driller at the same time, because I had to cut the power plug, for use a Neutrik NAC3FC-HC PowerCon, and it doesn't pop, or be hot, It is made to be reliable so it was made like a main power strip, I also connect it a 1600w vacuum cleaner and not a problem |
Question: | What are it's electronic specs (i.e. clamping voltage, energy dissipation, and response time)? I'm looking for something for musical equipment |
Answer: | Clamping Voltage = 400V. Surge Rating = 540 joules. Response Time = n/a. (Strangely, the response time is not available on the product website. I don't know if it means that it's a problem.) I would look elsewhere. There are a lot of other surge protectors that sell for less and provide better protection. It has a normal clamping voltage but its surge rating is low. So, it's going to stop working much earlier than other surge protectors. And, it's not like this really smooths out the line noise as it filters out only 20db (which is much lower than other devices). Frankly, I don't know why people would buy this, especially at this price ($30) and why it has a high rating. I guess the unit looks sturdy and looks like a heavy duty piece of equipment but it really isn't. The company is tricking you. |
Question: | Is this a surge protector or just a power strip? Not used to buying something without a Joules rating. Help! Need for my whole TV setup |
Answer: | It provides 540 Joules protection as well as EMI and RFI protection.. Furman is one of the best names in power conditioning for MUSICAL equipment. That should definitely be considered. I’ve used this brand for decades with zero problems. I’m currently using an M8lx conditioner and one of these branching off of it for added protection of a Gibson guitar/Marshall amp setup with numerous add-on equipment (pedals/PA amps etc.) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the unit balance the power within particular ranges? For example, would it add voltage during Brownouts? If not recommendations welcome |
Answer: | I think you need to look at high quality UPS especially one that can rectify voltage/current or go to battery for outage. I bought a CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS System recently and it's working flawlessly. Although for high-end audio you may want a Furman P-1800 PFR as power regulator. I actually use both in series and place my high-end audio equipment behind the P-1800 PFR. |
Question: | Will this take the 60 cycle hum out of my home tube amp |
Answer: | Hum has nothing to do with surge suppression. You either have an un-screened signal cable or a ground loop. Try connecting ALL equipment to the SAME outlet. |
Question: | Does this need to be plugged directly into the wall outlet, or can it be plugged into a strip? Can I connect a strip to this unit safely |
Answer: | The warranty is void if the unit is plugged into anything but an outlet. The warranty language does not seem to address plugging strips INTO the unit. See also Dan J's response, above. |
Question: | The prior unit (ac-215) said that its surge protection was "non-sacrificial." this one does not say that. is it |
Answer: | The AC-215A manual says: "Traditional surge suppression circuits sacrifice themselves when exposed to multiple transient voltage spikes, requiring the dismantling of your system and repair of your surge suppressor. Not so with Furman’s SMP. Damaging transient voltages are safely absorbed, clamped, and dissipated. Your connected equipment is protected, while your Furman protects itself!" |

Question: | Are the rack ears removable |
Answer: | Try it on the feed to the lights, and buy ferrite beads and install them between the led lights. And install ferrite beads on the power cord as close to the stereo as possible. Search Amazon for "ferrite beads snap on" for examples. It's all trial and error. |
Question: | How long is the power cord |
Answer: | I tried putting it on the feed to the stereo, didn’t work. Next I will try putting it on the feed to the LED light. |
Question: | Are the feet on the bottom removable |
Answer: | I know it sounds odd, but these are designed for the second hot on a US 240v split single phase to be hooked to the neutral input/output...If you look at the schematic both legs are filtered the same so the emi filter doesn't distinguish between hot and neutral in this case...These will also work with either 120v US or 240v EU on one leg with a neutral on the other... |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the power cable a flat plug |
Answer: | Mine is the same sort of flat, angled 3 prong plug that H. Gajjar, Scott C. and Christian Moreland have. |
Question: | Anyone using this for high end headphone amps and dacs? Thoughts |
Answer: | I am using this with a system of individual components: amp, preamp, CD player, tuner, turntable, DAC, and wifi receiver. I've had it about two years and it works flawlessly, but what I like best is that it sequences start-up and shut down so I always get everything in the order that protects the equipment. Plus it does offer spike protection. I'm not sure what you mean by high end, but my system cost ~$10000 without adding speakers. In short, I'd buy the G5BLK again. |
Question: | Is this a good unit to protect home theaters, flat panel tv 80"? Does it condition and protect surges |
Answer: | I purchased this unit for my home theater system and, yes, it will protect connected equipment against power spikes/surges up to 3400 joules of energy and also provides filtering/isolation to reduce audio/video noise. 3 of the 9 outlets are always on, which is ideal for connecting networking devices like cable modems, wireless routers and network switches. The other 6 outlets can be turned on and off using the main power switch on the front. We turn ours off at night to reduce "vampire" power draw when the home theater components are not being used. When the power button is pushed the outlets are automatically powered on (or off) in sequence to reduce power spikes cause by in-rush currents when multiple devices turn on or off at the same time. Note that you need to hold the power button a couple of seconds for it to turn off, so an accidental quick push doesn't do it. It also has a convenient outlet on the front. It's a bit expensive, but worth it to protect your even more expensive home theater equipment. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Does this come with the rack mounts - they are not pictured |
Answer: | Yes, it comes with rack mount brackets, and feet. You can see a picture of the rack attachment brackets on the APC web site at http://www.apc.com/shop/us/en/products/APC-AV-15-Amp-G-Type-Rack-Power-Filter-120V/P-G5BLK. The product installation manual is also available at the same site and also shows the brackets. I bought this unit a few years ago and just checked the original box, since I didn't use them, and the were not there, but the box does say they are included. So, my confidence is high that brackets are included. |

Voltage Regulation
Regulates the output voltage on Banks 1-4 to 120 VAC ± 5 VAC. This is accomplished through two boost stages and one buck stage of voltage regulation. In Boost Stage 1 the voltage is boosted in the 109-119V range, while Boost Stage 2 boosts the voltage in the 100-109V range. The Buck Stage acts to reduce voltage in the 125-136V range. LiFT Technology EMI/RFI Noise Filtration : Your audio/video components are constantly being bombarded by electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) through their AC power source. This contaminated power can affect audio/video equipment and will degrade the overall performance of your entire system. Common symptoms of contaminated power include loss of picture detail, dull colors, pops, hisses, hums and visual artifacts.
Automatic Over and Under Voltage Protection (AVM)
Panamax's patent pending power monitoring circuitry constantly monitors the AC line voltage for unsafe voltage conditions such as momentary spikes or prolonged over-voltages and under-voltages (brownouts). These unsafe conditions pose a very dangerous threat to all electronic equipment within the home. If the MAX 5400-PM senses an unsafe power condition, it will automatically disconnect your equipment from the power to protect equipment from damage.Once the voltage returns to a safe level, the M5400-PM will automatically reconnect the power. When subjected to a 6,000V (open circuit voltage) / 500A (short circuit current) surge, the M5400-PM limits its voltage output to less than 330V peak, UL's best rating. If the magnitude of the surge is greater than the capacity of the surge protection components, the M5400-PM's Protect or Disconnect Circuitry will disconnect your equipment in order to protect it. The M5400-PM will need to be repaired or replaced by Panamax if this occurs within the product’s 3 year warranty.
Five Isolated Outlet Banks
The M5400-PM is designed to provide noise isolation between the outlet banks so that any noise created by A/V components plugged into the M5400-PM cannot contaminate the power going to equipment plugged into the other outlet banks of the M5400-PM.
Sequential Startup/Shutdown
Complex audio/video systems may be susceptible to voltage transients generated internally at start-up/shutdown if all of the equipment is powered on or off at the same time. This can cause speaker "thumps" which are not only annoying but can also damage the speakers and/or trip product circuit breakers. The M5400-PM is designed to eliminate these transients by providing a "start-up" delay for the High-Current outlets and a "shutdown" delay for the Switched Outlet Banks. This minimizes in-rush current issues by allowing the components plugged into the Switched Outlet Banks to power-up and stabilize before any amplifiers and powered sub-woofers are turned on. This sequence is reversed during shutdown. The amplifiers and powered subwoofers turn off, their power supplies drain, and then the equipment plugged into the Switched Outlet Banks are turned off.
USB Charger, LAN, and Gaming Ports
The M5400-PM features a front panel convenience charger for mp3 players, cell phones, video game controllers, and other small electronics. (NOTE: Some devices may not be compatible with this USB charger.) Add to this an easy-to-access LAN port pass-thru from the rear panel to the front panel for online gaming and a convenience outlet located on the front panel, perfect for gaming systems and other electronics.

Product featuresProtect Sensitive Electronics from Brownouts & Power SurgesTripp Lite's LCR2400 Line Conditioner keep your equipment working through brownouts without using emergency power such as UPS systems and auxiliary generators. It automatically adjusts under- and overvoltages to provide safe, computer-grade AC power meeting ANSI C84.1 specifications. Additionally, because printers have a high current draw and a tendency to cause localized brownouts, Hewlett-Packard recommends the use of a line conditioner with their laser printers. Surges, spikes and EMI/RFI line noise wear down sensitive circuitry and can cause premature aging or total failure of your equipment. It features the widest voltage correction range of any comparable units. Using multiple levels of voltage correction, the LC2400 automatically adjust under- and overvoltages to keep you working through brownouts and prolonged overvoltage conditions. The LC2400 also protects your valuable equipment with built-in premium surge suppression. Versatile Protection for Sensitive ElectronicsThe LCR2400 provides comprehensive protection and performance enhancement for computers, A/V components and all electronics in a 3U rackmount format. It features built-in automatic voltage regulation to protect sensitive equipment from the harmful effects of brownouts and overvoltages, plus a 1440-joule surge suppression rating to protect against catastrophic surge damage. The LCR2400 also filters out disruptive line noise that can cause performance problems and corrupt or erase data. Exclusive Isobar isolated filter bank technology prevents mutual interference between connected components. With its 2400-watt output rating and fourteen outlets, the LCR2400 provides ample capacity for multiple items of connected equipment. Advanced Automatic Voltage RegulationTo protect connected equipment from the harmful effects of voltage fluctuations, the LCR2400 features built-in Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) with three levels of voltage stabilization to provide a targeted response to overvoltages, undervoltages and severe brownouts. The LCR2400 can correct brownouts as low as 87V and overvoltages up to 140V back to safe, nominal 120V power. AVR protection prevents equipment damage, data loss and power-related performance problems.
