Answer: | I have put 3 of these in RV's, including my own. There is absolutely no difference between an RV electrical system and a house electrical system. For 30A, you only hook up one side. You have the other as a spare then. One install was in a park with known electrical surges. One day a few RV's got hit hard and lost some equipment. The install I did with this blew one side of the surge suppressor and lost only the fan on a very old portable electric heater. A couple months prior to the install, they had a surge and fried the computer that controlled the whole RV. It was one of those touch screen RV's that controlls slides, lighting, etc. The whole part costs $1600 and is not available to purchase since it is "OEM". I am not joking, if it breaks, you either have to buy a new RV or rewire your RV to toggle switches yourself. Sorry, a bit of a sore subject. |

Answer: | In the interest of giving you a reliable answer, I just popped the cover off my breaker panel to measure the length of the wires that are permanently attached to the Ultra Surge, coming out of the conduit nipple molded into its housing. I didn't shorten any of the four conductors when I installed it on the side of my panel, and they are 15-1/4" long... a neutral, ground, and two line wires. Incidentally, I'm impressed with the quality of this unit, and glad I chose it. |

Answer: | I think it depends on your specific AHJ. Installing this SPD inside the loadcenter is not a code violation per se but installing into a loadcenter not designed for integral installation may be seen as voiding the UL listing of the loadcenter since it was not designed specifically for an integral SPD mount (which in effect might be a NFPA 70 violation). I’d error on the side of caution and mount external. Try to get the SPD as close to its OCPD as possible. SPD leads over 12-14” in length drastically effect SPD performance. The difference in resistance between the busbars and those small gauge leads is drastic. I prefer to get the SPD as close to the load side of the loadcenters main breaker I can. |

Answer: | I does have 4 pigtail wires. It does not snap in. 2 pigtails tie to the breaker you choose, one wire to the neutral and one to the ground bar. It is mounted in one of the knockouts on the main breaker panel. If this is installed on an existing breaker panel, you might have to cut an opening in the wall. I recommend paying the few extra bucks for the cover plate. It is a really good looking install. I mounted mine on one of the bottom left side knockouts. If circuits powered from the subpanel extend outside the home, they are susceptible to surges originating from nearby lightning strikes that will back feed into the subpanel possibly damaging equipment. Also, if the subpanel supplies motor driven equipment there are additional considerations. When motors turn off on and on, they create lower energy spikes that could travel and impact other equipment served by the sub panel or back upstream to equipment powered by the main panel. A percentage of subpanel surges will not travel all the way back to the main panel, but will seek earth via equipment powered by the sub-panel. A lower surge capacity device like FS60 would probably be sufficient for the subpanel. |

The PROPER installation would be to take the top two single pole 20 amp breakers and attach it there. You have three wires coming in from the pole(meter) they each carry 120volts EACH. you must protect BOTH SIDES. it's self explanatory once you have the box open 2 big black mains to main breaker and two rows of breakers just attach the supressor to the topmost 20a on the left and the other wire to the right topmost 20a but they must be single leg. The ground goes to your ground bus(with all the bare copper wires) you may have to move some breakers around but that's how it's done. |

Depending on the model you get, you install a new 20,30 or 50 amp 220v breaker and wire it up with nothing else wired to the breaker it gives you surge protection on both phases in your panel that way . If you do not have open breaker slots, by code you should replace the panel. I am not a licensed electrician but the normal DIYer can do it pretty easily. |

Instead, it has a clip that plugs directly to that bar when you install. You cannot plug one of these into the other type. You can tell if you have a plug-on-neutral load center because the ground/neutral bars run the full height of the breaker section of the panel, where the non-plug-on-neutral panels have ground/neutral bars that only go about halfway down the breaker section of the panel. |

Answer: | As long as the green LED is lit your good. It all comes down to what kind of strike it's hit with. Most normal surges on in coming power should be ok. Lighting on the other hand can be a lot of heat, which would be the problem. That's why as long as the LED stays green it's good or turns red it's been exposed to high heat. It has a 3yr warranty and comes highly recommended. For most people it's cheap insurance. They pay up to $7500 I believe if something happens during the 3 yrs. I know people who have had them 10 years and still working. Hope this helps. |

To "clean up" inferior power from your power company, such as high and low line voltage, you can get POWER LINE CONDITIONERS that can regulate power up and down and protect against spikes. You probably wouldn't get a WHOLE HOUSE line conditioner, as it would be HUGE, and very expensive. I would install smaller ones for things that don't like "dirty power" such as a microwave oven. For computers and other such devices, use a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), which contains a battery in the event of a power failure. Be sure to buy a UPS that features AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation). That way your computer is protected against ANYTHING that happens on your power lines. Cheaper UPS units not containing AVR will simply switch to battery if power is too low or too high. This means your battery will run the device for only about 20 minutes to an hour before it fails, EVEN THOUGH YOU ACTUALLY HAVE POWER. UPS's with AVR will never go to battery until you lose power or the voltage goes beyond their capability to regulate voltage.Be sure to identify things that don't need regulation such as light bulbs and fans, and don't use a regulator for those. If your power is really that bad, you should see if the power company can fix it or recommend a solution that they might partially subsidize. |

Answer: | Typically, not much. This protector shunts most of a power surge to ground, so for most things, there is not much more than a flicker. If the surge is too big for the protector, the protector will blow, some circuit breakers will trip, and some devices may be destroyed. I had that happen with a previous, lower rated device when a lightning bolt hit a tree about 10 feet from my garage. |

Answer: | You should put one in each panel. Surge protection works best when used in layers. Just like a car needs both an airbag and a seatbelt, I recommend putting on in each panel. They should be installed as close to the main breaker as possible as you want the "protection" to see the surge before all the other breakers. This model only works with panel that have the neutral bar where the backside of the breakers attach. There is another model with a pigtail if you don't have that. In addition to this, you also should use point-of-use surge strips. Everything helps. If the surge gets past this device, you want a backup system (surge strip) to be there to help you, if needed. I am a master electrician, in case you are wondering how I know this stuff. |

Answer: | As a contractor I thing the ig series offer the most bang for the buck. The panel guard is a lot more money and I question if it provides that much more protection. If you have a lighting strike really close it will destroy whatever you have protecting your house. |
