12 best surge suppressor for rv
A surge suppressor for an RV, also known as an RV surge protector, is a crucial accessory designed to protect the electrical systems and appliances in your recreational vehicle (RV) from power surges and voltage spikes. These devices are particularly important for RV owners because they can encounter varying power quality and electrical environments at campgrounds and RV parks. Here's what you need to know about surge suppressors for RVs:
Surge Protection: The primary function of an RV surge suppressor is to detect and mitigate power surges and voltage spikes. These electrical anomalies can result from lightning strikes, faulty wiring, or fluctuations in the campground's power supply. A surge suppressor safeguards your RV's electrical system by diverting excess voltage safely to the ground.
Types of RV Surge Suppressors:
Portable Surge Protectors: These are external devices that you plug into the RV's power source before connecting your RV's power cord. They are convenient and versatile, allowing you to use them with different RVs. Portable surge protectors come in various amperage ratings to match your RV's electrical system.
Hardwired Surge Protectors: Hardwired surge protectors are permanently installed within the RV's electrical system. While installation can be more complex, they offer a more integrated and permanent solution. They typically have an external display panel for monitoring power conditions.
Protection Features:
Surge Indicator Lights: Many surge protectors come equipped with indicator lights that display the status of the electrical power supply. They can signal when the power is safe or when a surge or fault is detected.
Automatic Shutoff: Some advanced surge suppressors have an automatic shutoff feature. If a dangerous power surge occurs, the surge protector will disconnect power to your RV to prevent damage.
Diagnostic Features: Higher-end models may provide diagnostic information about the quality of the campground's power supply, such as voltage levels and wiring issues.
Compatibility: Ensure that the surge suppressor you choose is compatible with your RV's electrical system, including the correct amperage rating. Some models are designed for 30-amp systems, while others are suitable for 50-amp systems.
Weather Resistance: Since RVs are often exposed to outdoor elements, it's a good idea to select a surge suppressor that is weather-resistant or designed for outdoor use.
Warranty and Durability: Consider the warranty offered by the manufacturer and the durability of the surge protector. A longer warranty period can provide peace of mind, and a well-built unit will withstand the rigors of RV travel.
Installation: Installation methods may vary depending on whether you choose a portable or hardwired surge protector. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully or seek professional installation if necessary.
In summary, an RV surge suppressor is an important investment to protect your RV's electrical system and appliances from potentially damaging power surges. It helps ensure a safe and reliable electrical supply while you're on the road or at a campground. Select a surge suppressor that matches your RV's electrical specifications and offers the features and durability you need for worry-free RVing.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does anyone have this, and wish they bought hard-wired? Contemplating both versions. Like the simplicity this offers |
Answer: | I'm torn: I like the portability, but will probably go for hard-wired. Each plug-in connection offers the potential for a high-resistance connection in case of dirt/corrosion on the plug blades. And it's one less thing to have to set up and worry about. |
Question: | Can i use this product in conjunction of the hughes 50 amp 12,000 watt low voltage boosting transformer |
Answer: | Yes - absolutely. Our EMS should be placed in line after the transformer. It would be Pedestal Power > Booster > EMS > RV. Any other questions, let us know. |
Question: | What exactly does this do, other than act as a big power surge protector for the whole RV |
Answer: | it also protects from over- and under-voltage that can damage air conditioners and appliances. I was at a campground several years ago and discovered that my voltage was around 105v. I got to looking around and discovered that my power was provided by a daisy chain of 5 extension cords! Luckily there was no damage, but I immediately bought a Progressive energy management system. Last summer it saved my rig from an undervoltage problem at a campground in Utah when temperatures were 110+, and every A/C in the CG was blasting away. Highly recommended. |
Question: | If i purchase this, what would be the solution to using my honda eu2000i to power my camper |
Answer: | Honestly using that generator you don't even need this. This generator is not capable of surging enough watts to cause harm to the camper, and you are the only one using this power. What you need this for is when you are plugged in to shore power that is shared by others. |
Product features
Separate Portable Surge Module & Pedestal Tester
The new portable surge protector kits include 2 separate parts, a power pedestal tester and surge module. The power pedestal tester allows you to test the quality of the power before connecting your RV. The surge module can simply be left connected to your cordset so you don't have to worry about leaving it behind. All surge modules are sacrificial items intended to protect the vehicle's electrical system. By having the surge module separate you can still use the pedestal tester and replace the surge module when the indicator light signals the surge protection has been depleted.
All-in-one Portable Surge & Testing
The tried and true all-in-one surge protectors are portable devices that have both surge protection and pedestal testing in one unit. Simply plug the device into the power pedestal to check the quality of your power and then plug in your cordset. You can continue to monitor the quality of power while your RV is connected and surge protected.
Hardwired Protection
The hardwired surge protectors provide the highest level of electrical and surge protection available. They will be hardwired between your vehicle's AC inlet and the electrical panel to protect all AC devices on board. By hard-wiring the surge protection into the vehicle you never run the risk of leaving your surge protector behind and have the peace of mind knowing your protected every time you plug in.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work with a 30 amp to 50 amp adapter |
Answer: | It will “work” but not the way it is suppose to. You need a 50 for a 50 and a 30 for a 30 to be safe. |
Question: | Why do I need blue tooth monitoring |
Answer: | Can this be used to monitor monthly power usage? Can the usage only be seen when in the app? Does it keep ongoing track or only for so many days? |
Question: | What’s an “autoformer”? If it’s an elision of “automatic transformer,” how is yours different than a non-automatic transformer |
Answer: | Automatic step up transformer. It runs in line between your coach and park pedestal. It converts excess amperage to volts if need be. Volts drop amps go up. Simply converting one side to the other so your voltage is always more sufficient. It also has a built in replaceable surge protector. |
Question: | How long is the cord |
Answer: | Cord is about a foot on each end plus the box and plugs |

User questions & answers
Question: | How big is the locking ring opening? Not sure whether to buy 5/16 or 3/8 cable lock |
Answer: | The opening diameter is 11/16" or just a hair under 3/4". Any chain or cable that is less that this will be just fine. |
Question: | The photos shows plug and play but the description says hard wire ? Which is this unit |
Answer: | I wouldn't call it "Plug & Play". The unit has a male plug at one end and a female at the other. It's definitely not "Hard Wired". |
Question: | Can the EPO function be bypass |
Answer: | The EPO function is standard as well as automatic and cannot be disabled. |
Question: | If the unit shuts down due to a power issue, how does it reset once the issue is resolved |
Answer: | The unit is constantly monitoring the incoming power. If a detected fault is resolved or fixed then the unit will go into the 90 second delayed restart. The only faults or issues that require a manual reset (unplug and plug back in or flip the breaker, or reset via the app) is over current and open neutral from the coach's side. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the technology research 34590 universal lock work with the surge guard 44260 entry level portable surge protector - 30 amp |
Answer: | From their website: "The Universal Lock Hasp will only work with #81277 (Mfr. #34830), #81278 (Mfr. #34850), #73993 (Mfr. #44260), #73995 (Mfr. #44270) and #74402 (Mfr. #44750) Surge Guard products only." Based upon this, it will work. |
Question: | How do these in the $80 price range differ from those in the $200 to $300 price range |
Answer: | Those more expensive units are not just surge protectors. They are monitors that will cut power to your RV not only in a surge situation, but in a low voltage, brown out situation. Low voltage will ruin certain delicate circuitry. This will cut off the low voltage, wait (usually 2 mins.), then turn the power back on. If you can afford it, this higher priced monitor is the way to go. |
Question: | will it work with a 20a GFI outlet |
Answer: | You would need an adapter 20 amp to 30 amp. Does any campground only have 20 amp plugs? Probably not. All have at least a 30 amp plug. |
Question: | IS IT MADE IN USA |
Answer: | Does the USA still make things? I thought we just traded stocks and sold Chinese things to each other on websites. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Outside weather how is it protected also recommended lock up security suggestions |
Answer: | The Power dogs are weatherproof, water resistant and are not waterproof. This means the unit will do okay as long as you do not immerse under water. You can always lock the power dogs to the shore power post with the bicycle lock using the plugin holes on the input plug. |
Question: | Will this surge auto restore power.once it trips power. And will it restore the a/c |
Answer: | PWD30 is the basic model and it does not have shut off capabilities. It will protect you against the high voltage spikes but it doesn't trip the power off. Hughes at the moment does not carry the more sophisticated model with the automatic shut off switches. The newer model with the automatic shut off will be released by the beginning of the next year. |
Question: | Is the protector reusable after a event |
Answer: | According to Hughes web site, they have a 'spike module' that is replaceable if it fails due to a 'large spike' (their words). Meaning, the surge protection circuitry is designed to repeatably damp 2400 joules of direct, high voltage events to ground. If (I assume)the surge is higher than 2400 Joules, the 'spike module' may be harmed in grounding it. I don't believe this necessarily means it is guaranteed to protect your camper if the spike exceeds the capacity but it may (my guess) act as a fuse. Not sure but that is my guess based on what I read at their site. |
Question: | Does this protect against high AND low voltage |
Answer: | Jen, The PWD30 does not shut off as the EMS versions do. The PWD30 is an entry-level or simple surge protector. It only surge protects, circuit analyzes, monitors park power, alerts your phone if a problem is imminent, all via Bluetooth. On February First, Hughes will have the only Bluetooth version of a surge protector that shuts off your RV in low or high voltage situations as well. |

Question: | Has over/under voltage protection |
Answer: | It will test for adequate voltage via the led’s when plugged into the pedestal green is ok, red not so it won’t function |
Question: | Seems like a lot of "reviews", how are people happy with this surge protector |
Answer: | I am very happy with this. Beside the surge protection I can verify that the electric box we are plugging into has been properly wired before damage is done to our RV. |
Question: | does the 44280 protect over and under |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Is this a one time use and throw away after an event or does it reset |
Answer: | This is to be used each time you plug in your RV at a campground. It's not ruined after a surge as it's not a breaker. It can be used indefinitely. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this detect low voltage |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Is this a one time use only once there’s a spike it’s done cannot be reset |
Answer: | That answer is incorrect, technically you can't "reset" a surge protector however Hughes Autoformer PWD30 Power WatchDog sold here on Amazon has a Surge / Spike Module so should you get hit by a large spike, simply order a new surge module. No need to order a whole new unit. They claim the modules ate under $30. |
Question: | Does this also have a gfci and if there is a faulty ground will it cut the power |
Answer: | No to both. But a pretty light comes on (which you can see if it is dark outside). |
Question: | Any way of locking protecting it how can I put a lock on it so nobody steals it |
Answer: | Get a good chain and 2 padlocks one must have a big enough opening to put one link of chain and around the wire the other padlock wrap the chain around the pole and lock it to the pole Thank you for the Question you made me think of a good way to secure it |

User questions & answers
Question: | My trailer is 30 amp can I use this |
Answer: | Model 44270 is for the 50Amp requirement. Your 30 Amp trailer would need Model 44260 |
Question: | Does this protect you from both high and low voltage shutdown |
Answer: | No. This unit will protect against high voltage surges, but will not protect against low voltage. Look into Electrical Monitoring System (EMS) surge protectors if you need low voltage shutdown. They are significantly more expensive. |
Question: | Any suggestion on ways to lock this up since it isn't hardwired in |
Answer: | There are hard plastic lockout boxes for plug ends which might make you feel better but they are not that secure to guarantee no theft. You would have to drill a hole out the other end. These are actually safety devices for plugs ends and you would need 2 of them. Granger or electical supply houses sell them. You might just want to cover the plug with some kind of a rag or something just to keep it out of view and it does have three green lights on it that look obvious at night. So a disguise of some sort might be the way to go. Thieves are very smart these days |
Question: | Would this surge protector be sufficient for a 2013 40' bighorn Silverado |
Answer: | Yes it's a 50amp protector and a 2013 bighorn is 50 amp service. I used one all winter in Florida |
