10 best metal surge protectors
A metal surge protector, also known as a metal surge suppressor or metal surge strip, is a type of electrical device designed to protect electronic equipment and devices from voltage spikes, power surges, and transient electrical disturbances. Here is what you need to know about metal surge protectors:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a surge protector is to safeguard sensitive electronic equipment and devices from sudden voltage spikes and surges. These spikes can result from lightning strikes, power outages, or fluctuations in the electrical grid.
Construction: A metal surge protector is built with a durable metal casing, which provides not only physical protection but also helps dissipate excess heat generated during surge events. The metal housing enhances the device's durability and longevity.
Surge Protection Components: Inside the metal surge protector, there are surge protection components such as metal oxide varistors (MOVs) or gas discharge tubes. These components divert excess voltage away from connected devices and ground it safely.
Outlets: Metal surge protectors come with multiple power outlets, allowing you to plug in several electronic devices simultaneously. The number of outlets can vary, with some models offering as few as four and others providing ten or more.
Cord Length: They typically feature a power cord of varying length to provide flexibility in positioning the surge protector within your workspace.
Surge Rating: Surge protectors are rated for their surge energy handling capacity, often measured in joules. A higher joule rating indicates better protection against larger surges.
Clamping Voltage: The clamping voltage is the voltage level at which the surge protector begins to divert excess energy. Lower clamping voltages offer better protection.
Response Time: Surge protectors have a response time, which is the time it takes for them to react to a surge. Faster response times are more effective at protecting connected devices.
Indicator Lights: Many surge protectors have indicator lights to show whether they are functioning correctly or if the surge protection components need replacement.
Mounting Options: Some metal surge protectors come with mounting holes or brackets, allowing you to securely attach them to walls or under desks for convenient placement.
Usage: Surge protectors are commonly used to safeguard sensitive electronics such as computers, televisions, audio equipment, gaming consoles, and more. They are essential for preventing damage to these devices and data loss.
Replacement: Surge protectors are not a one-time investment. Over time, the surge protection components can wear out due to repeated surges. It's essential to replace surge protectors periodically to ensure continued protection.
In summary, a metal surge protector is an essential accessory to protect your valuable electronic equipment from voltage spikes and power surges. Its metal casing provides durability and heat dissipation capabilities, while the internal components divert excess energy away from your devices, preventing potential damage. When choosing a surge protector, consider factors such as its surge rating, clamping voltage, response time, and the number of outlets to ensure it meets your specific needs.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it be safe to use as daisy chain |
Answer: | Surge suppressors aren't good to daisy chain but if the extensions are just simple power strips with no interrupting suppressor, and you know the current load will be lower than 15A (even under heaviest load), then it's safe. |
Question: | Are all 12 outlets surge protected? Trying to figure out if the 4 green ones are different, or just a design choice |
Answer: | The only difference is that the green ones offer wider spacing. For my money these are fine surge protectors, I have one at each of the computer workplaces in my home and one in my guestroom. The one in my office is protecting a dell workstation that would cost about $3000 to replace, plus two monitors, my high res printer, etc etc. I think you can gather my opinion as to the quality of this unit. |
Question: | Is the power strip plastic casing or metal casing? i have one of axtra 12 outlet metal casing power strip. i want to get this one for my kitchen |
Answer: | This power strip is plastic casing. I prefer AXTRA 12 outlet metal housing power strip surge protector for your kitchenware. |
Question: | What is the difference between this power strip compares to axtra 12 outlet metal power strip |
Answer: | Axtra is a 450 joule surge protector, which I would not use ever to protect anything. So one of them is a surge protector, the other is a joke. At 4320 joules the amazon basics offers some real protection and longevity. Also the amount of joules of energy protection is directly correlated to longevity (surge protectors do not last forever. Astra is spamming with this question, and If I cared enough, I would look into the bona-fides of those who are recommending it here. at 50% higher price with about 10% of the energy protection the Axtra is not in the same league and I would never have it in my home. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Did this have an led light that indicates is working properly |
Answer: | Tripp Lite makes "isolation transformers" such as the IS250. The isolation transformer product will help with ground loops and other hums that come from bad electricity and other devices on the same circuit. The confusing part is that Tripp Lite has named the Isobar surge protector misleadingly. The Isobar doesn't isolate anything. It's a surge protector with a little bit of EMI/RF filtering, nothing more. Look into the IS250 or IS500 for actual isolation. |
Question: | What is the length of the 12 outlet model, including the mounting tabs |
Answer: | Using the "compare" feature on the Tripp Lite site, the "Intended Application" for the Isoblok2 is "Home/Office; Computer Networks" and the Ultrablok is "Home/Office; Travel." The ISO is listed as 4" high, the Ultra at 5" which is the shipping in-the-box size. Both are 4". There is no mention in the Web data or the product PDFs of Ultra's "isolated filter banks" for the Iso. Several emails back and forth with Tripp Lite to ascertain the FUNCTIONAL differences between the two were futile, they just cited the verbiage from their product pages. While there are probably differences between the two, apparently to Tripp Lite wants you to know... It's the paint. |
Question: | Two questions. 1) are the wallmount plates at either end removeable? 2) is there a model just like this that also has a few usb 2 ports |
Answer: | Mine was made in USA bought way back in 1993 when the factory was in Chicago. Now they are just Chicago based manufacturing in China. |
Question: | Is it possible to rotate the mounting tabs 90 degrees |
Answer: | This question comes up a lot. Many older homes were built at a time when only two wires were used (i.e., no safety ground). In an ideal world, the home would be totally rewired with 3-prong safety outlets installed, but this is not practical, besides which the 2-prong outlets were grand-fathered into the existing electrical codes. What does happen often is that someone takes out 1 or more 2-prong outlets in a home, and installs 3-prong outlets without the "safety ground". Doing this is okay so long as there is a label on the outlet stating "No Safety Ground" or "No Ground", but again many people leave out the label. People replace the outlets to avoid using numerous 3-prong to 3-prong adapters, or to avoid removing the "safety ground" plug on electrical cords.Modern surge protectors like this Tripp Lite place protection elements in parallel across all 3-prongs of an outlet, that is the L-N (Line to Neutral), L-G (Line to Safety Ground), and N-G (Neutral to Safety Ground). The idea is that when the voltage is sufficiently high enough, the protection element (aka the MOV) turns on and directs the surge to whatever it is connected to. Without a "safety ground" wire, the L-G and N-G MOV's end up conducting the surge to the Ground, but since there is nowhere for the surge to go to, it ends up going back into whatever is plugged into the surge protector (this only hastens the demise of the equipment plugged into the surge protector.MOV’s are not bi-directional, that is they only conduct current in one direction. So ½ of the surge energy on the HOT wire gets diverted to the NEUTRAL wire and the other ½ of the surge gets diverted to the Safety Ground and from there back into the electronics plugged into a surge protector. Some surge protectors have the ability to divert surges in both directions but its unknown if this model has that capability. For those units that can conduct in both directions, most of the surge energy would end up dumped onto the NEUTRAL, with some entering the electronics on the HOT & GROUND wires. If you have a 2-wire system, you’re better off with a L-N only surge protector or an alternate technology (see below)Now here’s the problem that affects all MOV based surge protectors: Can the surge, at surge frequencies, make its way all the way back to the mains electrical panel? Let me explain why it cannot by way of an example:Consider a hand over a body of water (i.e. in a bathtub or swimming pool). If you lower the hand slowly so that it breaks the surface of the water you can continue to push the hand under water with relative ease, but if you raise the same hand up and this time slam it as hard as you can, it’s like the hand does a “belly flop” and you’ll find the hand meets with great resistance as it tries to go under the water. This is how it is for electricity and surges. At 60 Hz, electricity has an easy enough time (path) to make its way all the way back to the mains electrical panel, however at surge frequencies it encounters great resistance (if the wiring were point to point it would not be so difficult, but we all know that in a typical household there are at least 4 90-degree bends in the electrical wiring and surges just don’t like sharp 90 degree bends. The only thing the manufacture guarantees is that the surge will be diverted from the HOT to the SAFETY GROUND or the HOT to the NEUTRAL at the place where the plug connects to the outlet. No manufacture can guarantee the surge makes its way all the way back to the mains electrical panel because everyone’s house wiring is different. This is another reason that many surge protectors receive such high reviews. People are only testing the 60 Hz return path, not the return path of the surge itself. The joke is on the consumer. So without a Safety Ground, the MOV's will wear faster and the electronics and/or appliance plugged into the surge protector will get a little more of the surge energy. It may not damage the electronics/appliance immediately but over time will do damage, even with a Safety Ground, this "parallel" technology will cause partial damage that over time will result in a shorter lifespan of whatever is plugged into the protector. Some companies make L-N only MOV based protectors and while a step in the right direction the issue of whether the surge can still make its way back to the mains electrical panel exist. Ironically these MOV based surge protectors cost more money than do those that require a Safety Ground.Lastly, there is a technology called Series Mode that places the protection element in series with the electrical path and slows the surge down in real time, stores the surge energy in capacitor banks and safely bleeds it onto the Neutral wire a few volts at a time, thus totally eliminating the surge, not just diverting it and hoping for the best. On a 120 VAC line, it begins to work at 121.4 VAC. It's not cheap, i.e., can cost from $159-$175 for a 2-outlet 7.5 Amp/ 15 Amp model but it often comes with a 10 year warranty and 10 year connected equipment warranty. While you can't daisy chain MOV based surge protectors for compliance (safety) issues you can plug an MOV based surge protector or UPS into a SERIES MODE surge eliminator to expand the available number of outlets. Brands to look for include Zero Surge, Brickwall and SurgeX (sold here on Amazon). Since Series Mode do not rely on ground, it's perfectly safe to plug one in the wall and then your electronics/appliances into the Series Mode.I would not advise using an MOV based surge protector at all especially if you have no Safety Ground in your home. I would recommend using a Series Mode filter since the Series Mode does not require the use of a Safety Ground, nor will it contaminate the GROUND which is used as a zero volt reference by electronics (including those found within appliances). If you are looking for an inexpensive Series Mode filter, look at the auctions on the popular auction site. A seller is selling both 2-outlet 7.5 Amp and 2-outlet 8 Amp units for $100 each or best offer. This is far more amperage than most people need for computers or home theaters. On a good day, I can only get about 4-5 amps out of my home theater and still be safely seated in the room w/o damaging my ears. If you need to, you can secure the COAX and TELCO lines where they come into the house. |
