12 best computer surge protectors

A computer surge protector, also known as a surge suppressor or surge protector strip, is a device designed to protect electronic equipment, including computers and other sensitive electronics, from voltage spikes and power surges. Here's what you need to know about computer surge protectors:

  1. Voltage Spikes and Surges: Voltage spikes and power surges are sudden, short-duration increases in electrical voltage that can occur due to various reasons, such as lightning strikes, power grid fluctuations, or switching on and off high-power appliances. These voltage anomalies can damage electronic devices, including computers, by overwhelming their power supplies and components.

  2. Protection Mechanism: Surge protectors work by diverting excess voltage away from connected devices and routing it to the ground. They use components like Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) or Gas Discharge Tubes (GDTs) to absorb and dissipate the excess energy.

  3. Outlets: Surge protectors typically have multiple outlets, allowing you to plug in several devices simultaneously. Some surge protectors also include USB charging ports for powering and protecting mobile devices.

  4. Joule Rating: The effectiveness of a surge protector is often measured by its joule rating. A higher joule rating indicates that the surge protector can absorb and dissipate more energy before it becomes less effective or needs replacement. It's advisable to choose surge protectors with higher joule ratings for better protection.

  5. Clamping Voltage: The clamping voltage is the voltage at which the surge protector begins to divert excess energy. Lower clamping voltages provide better protection, as they respond more quickly to surges.

  6. Response Time: Surge protectors also have response times, which indicate how quickly they can react to and divert excess voltage. Faster response times are preferable for optimal protection.

  7. Indicator Lights: Many surge protectors come with indicator lights to show if they are functioning correctly. They may have a "protected" light to indicate that your devices are safe, and some also have a "faulty" or "replace" light to let you know when the surge protector needs replacement.

  8. Warranty: Some surge protectors come with a connected equipment warranty, which means the manufacturer will cover the cost of repairing or replacing damaged devices if the surge protector fails to protect them. Check the warranty terms before purchasing.

  9. Compatibility: Ensure that the surge protector is compatible with your specific needs, including the number and types of devices you plan to connect. Some surge protectors are designed for home theater systems, while others are suitable for office setups.

  10. Daisy Chaining: It's generally not recommended to daisy chain surge protectors, as it can affect their effectiveness. Instead, use a single surge protector with enough outlets for your devices.

In summary, a computer surge protector is a vital accessory for safeguarding your electronic equipment from voltage spikes and power surges. Choosing the right surge protector with a suitable joule rating, clamping voltage, and response time can help protect your valuable electronics and prolong their lifespan.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this Surge Protector have a Built in Circuit Breaker
Answer: Ours is a regular 120v. outlet plug. Surge protector with heavy duty cord for use with various small appliance including electronic ones, computers, printers, etc. with a telephone outlet.
Question: Does this wall mount unit have a screw to keep it securely plugged in
Answer: I just received this product, and the plug is a flat, slightly angled to the right, but not rotating. Disappointing as I had come to really enjoy the rotating plug heads, but at least the slightly askew plug doesn't interfere with others. I have enough rotating head plugs, that if I do have a space problem I can swap them out. Even though this is apparently a variation, the design is exactly what you're seeing here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QPW9J2
Question: What is the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) rating of this product? Is it listed as a transient voltage surge suppressor
Answer: Hi. This unit has 330V clamping voltage.
Question: How does the $300,000 dollar warranty work
Answer: It plugs in flush to the outlet, rather than sticking out like most plugs. With the ground prong on the bottom, the cord drops down at about a 45 degree angle. The plug is a circle w/a diameter of about 1 3/8". It's about 3/4" thick.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the clamping voltage of BE112234-08? Official Belkins website says 330V but amazon's description says 500V
Answer: Reading off of the item in my hand its Stamped "Voltage Protection rating L-N 400V, L-G 500V, N-G 500V Type 3 SPDMy model number on mine says BE11230-08 so there may have been a change.
Question: What is the amp rating on the USB plugs
Answer: 2 amps. But if you plug in two devices it will divide to 1 amp each.
Question: Does it have an on-off switch
Answer: Yes! Near the power cord, there is an on off switch.
Question: I had a lightning strike last night and this popped and made a loud noise and then burning wire smell. Is this normal (how they die)? Fire hazard
Answer: If you have experienced a lighting strike, the MOVs (metal oxide varistors) that dissipate the energy have been stressed. They may not handle the next strike very well and damage the important equipment you plug into this. It is best to purchase a new one so that it will work properly for the next lighting strike. If this is a common occurrence at your home, you should look into lighting arrestors and better ground for your electrical connection to the power grid. I would not trust the protection light (Green) if you are smelling any sort of burnt wire smell. The likelihood of a fire hazard is increased - if wire insulation has melted due to heat from the lighting strike. If I remember correctly, MOVs usually fail to an open state but I would not bet on it without testing. It is cheap insurance to throw this out and replace it with new.

User questions & answers

Question: Will it be safe to use as daisy chain
Answer: The only difference is that the green ones offer wider spacing. For my money these are fine surge protectors, I have one at each of the computer workplaces in my home and one in my guestroom. The one in my office is protecting a dell workstation that would cost about $3000 to replace, plus two monitors, my high res printer, etc etc. I think you can gather my opinion as to the quality of this unit.
Question: Are all 12 outlets surge protected? Trying to figure out if the 4 green ones are different, or just a design choice
Answer: This power strip is plastic casing. I prefer AXTRA 12 outlet metal housing power strip surge protector for your kitchenware.
Question: Is the power strip plastic casing or metal casing? i have one of axtra 12 outlet metal casing power strip. i want to get this one for my kitchen
Answer: Axtra is a 450 joule surge protector, which I would not use ever to protect anything. So one of them is a surge protector, the other is a joke. At 4320 joules the amazon basics offers some real protection and longevity. Also the amount of joules of energy protection is directly correlated to longevity (surge protectors do not last forever. Astra is spamming with this question, and If I cared enough, I would look into the bona-fides of those who are recommending it here. at 50% higher price with about 10% of the energy protection the Axtra is not in the same league and I would never have it in my home.
Question: What is the difference between this power strip compares to axtra 12 outlet metal power strip
Answer: I don’t think so. You probably will need a converter to correspond to uk. Usually when u travel to Europe you do need a converter to use the electricity .

User questions & answers

Question: Does this have voltage regulation
Answer: This is one of those "yes and no" answers. The battery side converts unreliable wall current to stable battery current. So yes, on the battery side the voltage is somewhat "regulated". On the surge-only side (no battery) it acts as a standard surge protector, meaning it doesn't keep the voltage stable, but hopefully prevents critical spikes that could damage your product. Ideally if lightning were to hit your system it would melt the battery before it hit your computer. On the surge side, it would arc and fry everything from the surge protectors to the wall outlet to whatever is connected to it. So vitals on the battery side: computer, router, printer, monitor. Non-vitals on the surge side: desk lamp, telephone charger, desk fan, taser for the kids. ; )
Question: How long is the battery good for before it needs to be replaced
Answer: I have at least 10 UPS devices in my house right now, and another 4 spare trickle-charged SLA batteries sitting ready as replacements. I wouldn't expect ANY Sealed Lead Acid battery to be good for more than about 36 months. It's similar to your car battery -- if you let it run down, it will lower its capacity dramatically. At some point, you will *think* it's OK, but then when you need it most, it will simply not work well. Don't wait until you actually need the UPS to work.
Question: Is it easy to replace the battery when the time comes
Answer: I opened mine up to look at it (450w unit). The battery door is held in place with one small screw to stop it coming open by accident & he battery looks like a totally standard 9Ah 12V SLA that you can probably buy right here on Amazon when you need to.
Question: How long will this power a security camera system & modem? i need something that will keep my camera dvr going when the power is out
Answer: Your question can be answered better if you would say how much current your appliances draw. That will determine how long the battery will keep going before it goes dead. But, a UPS supply is the wrong device for your application. A UPS is intended to keep your computer from crashing when the AC power blacks out. The idea is for you to have enough backup power to save your data and turn your computer off. Or in some locations where the AC is pretty reliable but the power gets interrupted for just-a-second every day or two, a UPS will keep your computer from getting messed up from those intermittent interruptions. If you're concerned about your power going out for long periods of time, you need something more like a gas-powered generator. If you don't have more than a couple of low-power appliances to keep running, then a small bank of batteries -- but lots more batteries than a computer UPS -- would do the trick. It's more than I know, but there are switches which will switch your camera from the main AC to your battery backup bank. Your battery backup bank would include a "power inverter," which takes 12 volts and converts it to 115 VAC. A contractor involved in solar panel installation would consider installing backup power for your camera to be a "small, easy job."

Question: can i use this to turn my tv on/off
Answer: This outdoor smart plug supports appliance within 15A/1800W. Please check if the rated power of the connected appliances exceeds it. Also, please note that the maximum load for both sockets at once is 15A. Do not plug two 15A appliances into the outlet at the same time. Question: How many joules
Answer: Yes. I use it for that same purpose. According to Current, commands are transmitted to and stored in the unit. This of course is necessary for your desired use as once the network power is turned off you cannot access the plug from a remote location. But since commands are stored in the unit is can restart itself. Understand that you will have to issue two separate command routines to the unit. One to turn it off and a second to tur it one. Those to commands would be set to a specific clock time and because of that must be at least one minute apart. Just to be certain I usually set ours for a two minute restart. Your mileage may vary.
Question: Does the energy monitoring monitor each port individually or the whole power strip
Answer: Through the Currant App, you will be able to see how much energy the appliance uses on an hourly basis, as well as the total length of time it is on during a given day. You can also switch to a monthly or yearly view to see trends over longer periods of time. We do not have IFTTT integration or data exports available yet, but it is something we will consider for the future.

Answer: The output of the USB ports is 5V-3.1A, three ports share the total output ( 2.4A max per port ).
Question: What's the max wattage
Answer: this surge protector has a 900 joule rating.

Answer: The electrical rating for this surge protector is 125V, 15A and 1875W. Don't exceed the max power when use the electric devices.
Question: How is the apc power strip compare to axtra 8-outlet metal power strip
Answer: You should be able to, as long as you don't exceed 1800 watts (That is assuming you have a max load on your outlet of 15Amps at 120 Volts). It will let you know when you are starting to overload it. But I'm guessing with your PC, Router, Printer, you are going to be using less than 300 watts easily. So you should be fine. User questions & answers

Question: weird Q: a recent outage trapped elder lady in her power recliner. can this be used
Answer: We have a dual electric recliner sofa. After being temporarily "trapped" during an power outage, we purchased the APC UPS, 600VA BE600M1 APC UPS Battery Backup system. This week we had a 3 day outage, and the UPS worked like a champ. A must have for anybody with electric recliner chair or sofa.
Question: How long will it power my system while the power is off
Answer: I had my desktop computer, 2 monitors, and my modem/router combo plugged into the ups battery power. It lasted less than 20 minutes when the power went out, and there was no additional warning when the battery was about to shut off. It just had this intermittent double beep for about 15- 20 minutes, then bang, everything off. Pretty disappointed. I guess you get what you pay for.
Question: How often does the battery need to be replaced
Answer: I have had APC batteries last 7-8 years, the shortest was 13 months (12-month warranty, figures!). I have bought replacement batteries from other vendors, don't last at all. I had a beautiful APOC SUA1500, Batteries Plus sold me 2 x SLA batteries duct taped together (yes, literally) and they were NOT made for a backup power suppl;y as they stated, leaked, corroded the entire inside of my very expensive unit! I certainly regret that decision! Batteries Plus said they had the APC batteries, but when I got to the store they did not, ordering them, would take a long time, so I tried their option - will NEVER shop at Batteries Plus again! Just yesterday I had one APC battery die. Bought new unit Dec 17, 2017, today is March 31, 2020. Just over 3 years, their average. No complaints.
Question: Does it have ethernet ports
Answer: No, and generally you'll want to avoid surge protectors or UPS's with built in surge protectors that have multiple ports (i.e. coaxial, Ethernet, phone) since these devices turn on at different voltage levels. So once a surge comes in on the LINE (HOT) side of the AC outlet and the voltage has reached a certain level, the surge will be directed to both the NEUTRAL and the SAFETY GROUND, but as soon as that happens, some of the surge makes it's way into the COAX, ETHERNET, and PHONE ports and if you have something plugged into those ports then it goes into the devices. A recent study (see: http://incompliancemag.com/article/lightning-surge-damage-to-ethernet-and-pots-ports-connected-to-inside-wiring/) confirms this. The best place to secure PHONE, and COAX connections is where they enter the house and where they can have a short (less than 10 foot connection to a buried GROUND ROD). If you secure phone & coax at the service entrance and protect your electronics with Type 3 Surge Protectors you won't need to secure the Ethernet connections. Also, it's not a good idea to rely on the Surge Protector inside a UPS as those have a higher clamping voltage generally in the 650-800 Volt range and that means until the voltage reaches 800 volts, your electronics is getting zapped. You can't plug a UPS with an MOV surge protector into an existing MOV based surge protector for compliance (safety) issues, but you can plug a UPS with an MOV surge protector or an MOV surge protector into a Series Mode filter since the filter does not rely on sacrificial MOV's. The Series Mode filter starts to work at 121.4 VAC on a 120 VAC line and it totally eliminates the surge instead of diverting it and hoping the surge can make it's way back through your house wiring to the buried ground rod from the main electrical panel.

User questions & answers

Question: If there was a surge and computer/monitors connected to surge protector were ruined, would they replace it
Answer: The TLP825 has an output rating of 1800 Watts, 15 Amp resettable circuit breaker, and a maximum surge of 84,000 Amps. For more information about our warranty, and finding a surge suppressor that fits your needs, please reach out our Chicago-based Presales Applications Team at 773-869-1773 (M-F 8AM-6PM Central) or [email protected].
Question: What are the dimensions
Answer: i have black out before but the power came back without any action. so there's another question does work during the black out? if the protection circuits didn't disable the power during the surge. it will work as normal. i guess i gotta wait until lighting hit my house to find out.
Question: Does it cut off power when it can no longer protect devices? Will it work in a covered patio with an outdoor TV
Answer: As of January 2021, the Tripp Lite website lists 150 volts rms as the clamping voltage for the TLP808B surge protector
Question: does it have a underwriters laboratories (UL) certification
Answer: Short answer: Yes, but not recommended for people without basic electrical knowledge.Long answer: Yes, it is safe as long as every extension cord connected in the line is rated for the amount of amps you are trying to pull through the cords. You run into fire hazards when you exceed the amperage rating of any extension cord in the line. For example, you connect this product to a light duty extension cord rated at 13 amps which is connected to an outlet on a 20 amp circuit. You decide to connect devices to this product which pull a total of 18 amps. The breaker in your house won't trip because the amps drawn didn't exceed 20 amps, but the cheap light duty extension cord with no over-current protection starts to heat up, melt, and/or catch on fire. The reason most people tell the common person they can't connect multiple power strips together, is because most people won't do the necessary calculation to do it in a safe manner.
