14 best cd discs

CD discs, or Compact Discs, are optical storage media commonly used for storing digital data, including audio, video, software, and other types of files. There are different types of CD discs, including CD-R (Compact Disc-Recordable), CD-RW (Compact Disc-ReWritable), and various formats for audio and data storage. Here's an overview of CD discs:

  1. CD-R Discs (Compact Disc-Recordable): CD-R discs are write-once, recordable CDs. They have a pre-formed spiral track and a dye layer that can be altered by a CD burner's laser to record data.Once data is recorded on a CD-R, it cannot be erased or modified. CD-R discs are commonly used for burning music albums, data backups, and software distribution.

  2. CD-RW Discs (Compact Disc-ReWritable): CD-RW discs are rewritable CDs, allowing you to write and rewrite data multiple times. They use a phase-change alloy layer that can be changed back and forth between a crystalline state and an amorphous state using a CD burner's laser. CD-RW discs are suitable for temporary data storage and can be erased and rewritten many times.

  3. Audio CDs: These are standard CDs that typically contain audio tracks in the Red Book format. Audio CDs can be played on CD players, car stereos, and most computer CD/DVD drives. They use a standard CD format for music.

  4. Data CDs: Data CDs are used for storing various types of digital data, such as documents, photos, videos, and software. They can be created using CD-R or CD-RW discs and are compatible with most computers and DVD/CD drives.

  5. CD-ROM: CD-ROM (Compact Disc-Read-Only Memory) discs are pressed CDs manufactured with data or software already written to them during the production process. These discs are read-only, and their data cannot be altered or erased. They are commonly used for distributing software, games, and multimedia content.

  6. Capacity: Standard CD discs have a storage capacity of 700 MB (megabytes) or 80 minutes of audio. There are also high-capacity variants like the 800 MB CD-R and CD-RW discs, but these may not be compatible with all CD players.

  7. Storage and Handling: CD discs should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Fingerprints and scratches can affect their readability, so it's essential to handle them carefully and use proper storage cases or sleeves.

  8. Compatibility: CD discs have been widely used for decades and are compatible with a wide range of devices, including CD players, DVD players, CD-ROM drives, and CD/DVD burners. However, it's important to note that older formats like CD audio may not be playable on newer devices that lack CD players.

CD discs have been a popular medium for data storage and entertainment for many years, although they have faced competition from digital downloads and streaming services in recent times. Nevertheless, they remain a valuable archival and distribution option for various types of content.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the country of origin regarding the manufacturer of these discs
Answer: The discs are made in Taiwan by CMC Magnetics, who has made them for many years and now owns the brand.
Question: Can you put essays on it
Answer: You can write data files onto the disc (i.e. doc or text files) as well as any computer files or record music but not both
Question: Will the music burned on these play on an ordinary cd player/changer
Answer: Yes, I have not had any problems playing cd music or mp3 music disc burned onto these disc. My DVD/CD burner burns these disc at 40X with never a failure.
Question: Is it erasable? I mean, can overwrite what I have previously recorded? If the answer is yes, will it affect the quality of the second recording
Answer: This is an old question with old answers. YES you can edit your content (at least on Windows 10). When you first insert the CD into your drive, you will be prompted to either use it as a USB or CD. If you select USB you can edit (add/modify/delete) files. As a test, I saved an MP4 file and a text file then deleted the text file. No problem. I also added a text file then modified its' contents and resaved the text file (same file name). No problem. The other bonus is that the MP4 was read and played off of this disk. Just like I would expect (as if it was on a USB stick). There should be no degradation in performance, but all media (hard disks, solid state (drives, memory, USB) have write limits. You can only write to a disk so many times.

Question: Is this really a pack of 50 for under $10? Just making sure because there is such a big price difference between 1 and 2 packs of CD's

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a difference /compatibitity issue between a CD.R written by a standalone cd writer and a computer / Windows media writter
Answer: CDRs are good in computers only. They can be recorded and played back there. They will not be accepted for recording by a component CD writer. For that, a CDR- Audio disc, commonly marked 'music' is needed. These will play back anywhere while the computer generated homemade discs will often skip periodically on car units, boom boxes, and various model guitar trainers. Professionally mastered and duplicated CDRs should be good anywhere.
Question: Will these discs record in my Magnavox 765 recorder
Answer: I'd guess these aren't likely to work on an older Philips/Magnavox recorder. Maybe some of the ones available in 2014 would have; they were then sourced from Ritek, but since late 2016 or so they have been made by CMC Magnetics, who also make discs branded as Memorex, Imation, Verbatim and others. The trouble seems more due the physical layout of the disc than to the type of dye used.
Question: will cd r's record & play back on a 2013 teac cd recorder
Answer: I'm using a 2008 TEAC CDRW880 hooked up to an Onkyo stereo reciever.. I've been using CD-R Music in the Maxell, TDK and Memorex brands and have never had any recording issues. The CD has to be a CD-R "MUSIC". A regular CD-R can't be used except on a computer to save pictures & video.
Question: is this digital audio recordable
Answer: Yes, these are the discs necessary for separate CD recorders not for computers. Dub then finalize and listen on any CD player

Verbatim DVD-R 4.7GB 16x AZO Recordable Media Disc - 50 Disc Spindle

Verbatim

Based on 9 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Verbatim DVD-R offer 4.7GB or 120 Minutes of write-once storage capacity, superior recording quality, and compatibility with 1X to 16X DVD-R writers, allowing users to record a complete 4.7GB/120Min disc in approximately 5 minutes. Recognized as the choice of professional users, Verbatim DVD-R offers the optimal AZO recording dye, which provides the highest level of read/write performance, reliability, and archival life. Verbatim 16X DVD-R media is compatible with hardware from most leading drive manufacturers. Backed by Verbatim's Limited Lifetime Warranty.

From the Manufacturer

The Verbatim AZO recording layer gives our DVD media the competitive advantage-the patented coating delivers protection that lasts generations and provides ultimate resistance to UV light damage. That's why Verbatim's been recognized as the No. 1 Optical Brand in the World*--we consistently provide optical media of the highest quality and compatibility. When drive manufacturers test their products for maximum performance, they use Verbatim--so why wouldn't you?

Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM), Verbatim's parent company in Japan, brings extensive technological research and development to the table. Core technologies, like the AZO recording layer give Verbatim an offering like no other optical manufacturer. This unique and ultra-stable layer strongly resists UV light, withstands high laser and rotation speeds on newer drives and ensures compatibility with current DVD standards.

Verbatim's AZO recording layer not only withstands the extremely high laser and rotation speeds of newer drives, it also maximizes their performance. Verbatim paid particular attention to the durability and light fastness of AZO; tests show that it is more stable than most recording dyes and the least affected by ultraviolet light.

AZO also offers high sensitivity for reliable high-speed recording and high reflectivity to eliminate read errors. The thinness of the recording layer is also critical. The thinner the layer, the higher the sensitivity and power margin; therefore, the better the DVD works for high-speed recording.

What does all this mean for you? Verbatim AZO technology translates into optical products that cost just a little more but are worth the slight difference. They are products you want-offering reliability, high read and write performance, high-quality photos and sound and superior archival protection that lasts.

User questions & answers

Question: Do these Dvd's each have their separate case
Answer: Absolutley not. It's just as it looks in the picture. That is, it's in a stack in one container. Jewel cases are so expensive. No DVDs or CDs that come in quantity that I know of come in individual cases.
Question: What do the letters -R, +R, -RW and +RW mean
Answer: As I understand it The only difference between Dvd-R and Dvd+R Is the how the laser burns the data DVD-RW Means you can burn and erase multiple times
Question: Can I write information on the disc directly or do I need or do I lables
Answer: I've written on my discs with a regular Sharpe for many years (over 20) and even the oldest discs are fine. No problem at all. I have about 3,000 discs made over the last two decades and have never found a single problem with any of them so I would say, go ahead and just a Sharpie.
Question: What is the Version number of this disk? Verbatim 4.7 gb 16 x speed
Answer: For the price, it is the best you can buy. I try to get Verbatim DVD-R because on my HP desktop computer and the video software I use, it is the best. I does not matter the version number of this disk. What matters is that it is 4.7 Gb with a speed of 16. You will be able to record movies, photographs, music and much more. When formatted, you get about 4.1 Gb which is about 30 minutes of HD.

User questions & answers

Question: does it work with cd game roms and isos such as sega cd or ps1 games
Answer: Not sure about games. I used mine for back up of pictures and music.
Question: Does anyone know if i can I burn a powerpoint presentation onto a CD-RW? Or do I need a different kind of disc
Answer: You should be able to burn any type of file onto a CD-RW, as long as the file size doesn't surpass the CD size (700 MB). Honestly I feel like it would be easier to just save your .ppt to a USB thumb drive, but if all you have available is a CD-RW, then go for it. :)
Question: what is the difference between cd-r and cd-rw discs? which 1 do I need to if I want to burn photos, then add more without erasing 1st set of photos
Answer: CD-RW would be your best choice because those are rewritable. With the CD-R, you can only burn files onto the disc once. CD-RW allows you to burn files, and then add more later. However, if two files share the same name, one will overwrite the other, so be sure every file has a different name. You can also erase the entire disc multiple times, though eventually the disc will wear out.
Question: Sorry, not technology savvy. Can these be used to record music files multiple times on one disc
Answer: WMA and MP3s can be recorded on these discs multiple times. But, if you close or finalize your session then no additional files can be added at a later session. Once these discs are finalized then they have to be erased in order to use them again.

User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone personalized with a full cd size sticker label
Answer: I have purchased tens of thousands of CDRs and labels over the past few years, for my business (recording/producing workshops at conventions), and have always used peel-off stick-on labels on regular CDRs just like this one. I have purchased this particular item ONLY ONE TIME a few months ago (about a thousand of them) to produce some CDs for a presenter to sell. These were THE VERY WORST ONES I have ever purchased...I had a ONE IN FIVE FAILURE RATE in my duplicators. I purchased them as they were the cheapest on Amazon...I will NEVER do it again. You would be way better off buying Verbatim or any other brand than these...all of them (except ones with a white print-on surface) will handle a stick-on label.
Question: Is the back side holographic? I need those ones and not the blue ones
Answer: I am not sure what you mean by Holographic, but it is definitely not the blue one. It is more about silver/greenish.
Question: Can these discs be used with audio CD burners
Answer: No. These discs are not compatible with Digital Audio recorder.
Question: What color is the back side? I need silver ones and it does not shows if it that or blue
Answer: These are white on the top and the normal silver on the recording side.

User questions & answers

Question: Do these work well in a philips cd-785 recorder? are they compatible with hp & dell computer dvd/cd drives
Answer: The latest batches failed OPC on both of my Philips CDR 765s and a CDR 870, and were rejected on a JVC XL-R5000 before it even tried running OPC. I have had batches of these that worked on the Philips recorders, but most do not. Later Philips machines might have a better chance, but I also got failures in a CDR 778.
Question: can I copy pictures on these disk
Answer: They are intended for stand-alone CD audio recorders, but should work on most computers, where they can be used for the same purposes as a data CD-R, including copying pictures. Note that the maximum rated burn speed is 40X, while most data CD-Rs are rated 48X or 52X.
Question: What is the color of the recording (bottom) surface? Silver, or something else? Looking for blue
Answer: The recording bottom is silver!
Question: Whats the difference between music cds and data cds
Answer: Music blank CDs are exclusively for recording music type programs and can be used on a Computer or Home Recording device . Data CDs are exclusively used on Computers. Music CDs are distinguished by the "Compact Disc" logo and "Recordable" on the discs; Data CDs are distinguished by the "Compact Disc" logo ONLY . This is the best way to tell them apart, unless the manufacturer adds some more detailed info on the packaging ; the major makers usually do , but some others don't .

Why Verbatim

Verbatim has been trusted for over 50 years to provide reliable and affordable data storage products and is the leading brand of optical media sold today.

Verbatim prides itself on producing optical media compatible with more drive manufacturers than any other brand in the world, giving our customers better disc burns at rated drive speeds.

Backup v. Archive

The difference between backing-up your data and archiving your data is subtle, but important. Backing-up data is usually done on a daily or weekly basis, to account for any edits or additions you have made. Archiving is a more permanent solution – ideally, you archive data a few times a year and it remains safe for years to come.

Optical media is the ideal media for archiving. It is durable enough to last for years and takes up less physical storage space. The random access file retrieval makes finding data faster and easier. And with better backwards compatibility, data stored on optical media can be accessed for many years to come.

Government/Official Agencies

  • Find specific records quickly and easily
  • Read-only discs prevent data from being altered or stolen

User questions & answers

Question: What color are the backs of these discs? Like the side you would not write on/label. Thanks
Answer: I would say that the side the laser burns is lavender, almost identical to the color you see on the product label bottom half.
Question: What is the difference between "Branded" and not
Answer: Verbatim does not actually manufacture their own discs. They also use 2 different manufacturers that I am aware of. The superior quality Verbatim AZO discs, are manufactured by Mitsubishi, which should be the product on this page. The Verbatim DataLifePlus/DataLife Series are a lower quality product, manufactured by CMC Magnetics. Neither type of disc are actually manufactured by Verbatim themselves. This is a very common practice among most CD/DVD/BD recordable disc brands.
Question: Verbatim life series dvds are reported to be lower quality and less reliable. i don't want life series. are these life series dvds
Answer: I don't remember them having "Life Series" on the label, so I doubt it, but in any case, I used them ALL without one problem ~ THEY WERE FLAWLESS!
Question: Are these DVD's rewritable? They have the "RW" on the case but the description says "write once
Answer: No they are not rewriteable. In this case the RW signifies read-write. That means you can read from them and write to them. This item is marked DVD+R. If they are marked DVD+RW they would be rewriteable. They have to have the RW behind the disc description. Ex. CD-RW, CD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+RW would signify all rewriteable disc's.
