14 best balanced audio cables
Balanced audio cables are a type of audio cable commonly used in professional audio setups to transmit audio signals while minimizing interference and noise. They are often used in recording studios, live sound reinforcement systems, and other professional audio applications. Here are some key characteristics and information about balanced audio cables:
Purpose: Balanced audio cables are designed to transmit audio signals over long distances without degrading the quality of the signal. They are particularly useful in environments where interference and noise can be a problem.
Balanced vs. Unbalanced: The primary difference between balanced and unbalanced audio cables is how they handle interference.Balanced cables use a three-conductor configuration, typically with XLR or TRS connectors, while unbalanced cables use a two-conductor configuration with connectors like RCA or TS.
Three Conductors: Balanced cables have three conductors - positive, negative, and ground. The positive and negative conductors carry identical audio signals but with opposite polarity, which helps cancel out interference when the signals are recombined at the destination.
Interference Rejection: Interference, such as electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency interference (RFI), affects both the positive and negative conductors equally. When the signals are combined, the interference cancels out, resulting in a cleaner audio signal.
Common Connectors: Balanced audio cables often use XLR connectors for microphones and TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) connectors for other audio equipment like mixers, amplifiers, and professional audio interfaces.
Applications: Balanced audio cables are commonly used in professional audio setups, including connecting microphones to audio mixers, linking audio interfaces to studio monitors, and connecting musical instruments to amplifiers or DI boxes.
Cable Types: Balanced audio cables come in various cable types, including twisted-pair cables with shielded or braided shielding to further reduce interference. The choice of cable type depends on the specific application and environmental factors.
Impedance Matching: It's essential to match the impedance of the cable with the equipment it's connected to for optimal signal transfer and to prevent signal loss.
Cable Length: Balanced cables can transmit audio signals over longer distances compared to unbalanced cables without significant signal degradation, making them suitable for professional audio setups where long cable runs are common.
Cost: Balanced audio cables tend to be more expensive than their unbalanced counterparts due to the additional conductors and shielding used in their construction.
In summary, balanced audio cables are a crucial component in professional audio setups, designed to provide clean and interference-free transmission of audio signals over long distances. They are commonly used in studios, live sound systems, and other professional audio applications to ensure high-quality audio reproduction.

User questions & answers
Question: | what percent is the shielding on this cable? A picture would be nice if possible |
Answer: | The shielding is 100% coverage!! No way to send a picture to this response!! Very good cable! I own a sound company and make my own cables, I’m doing approx 5 gigs a week and now that I’m making my own cables my cable problem has dropped 99%!! I bought in the passed year 4 rolls of this cable! |
Question: | Can i use this to make 1/8 inch cables |
Answer: | *Sigh* This is bulk cable. You must solder your desired end on the cable (TRS or XLR). I suppose you could solder on an 1/8" (3.5mm) TRS end, but I've never seen those for sale. |
Question: | what is the outer jacket outside diameter |
Answer: | I measured 3/16 inch, manufacture in produced description states 6 mm |
Question: | Surprised that this is not among the questions: What is the shield (foil, braided, twisted, etc |
Answer: | There is a copper braided connector for the ground connections. I've used GLS Audio microphone cable in a professional studio and stage applications for fifteen years. I've never had a single failure or issue. The cable is supple and contains oxygen-free copper. I have no Earthly idea what the other respondent was talking about regarding a shield and being susceptible to noise. That's hogwash. Wire it correctly for balanced applications and this cable is dead quiet. And it's a heck of a lot easier to work with than star-quad. My only concern was shipping weight as GLS Audio was based in California. However, they would have an annual sale where I would buy five 300' spools and get discounted ground shipping. I highly recommend this cable. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I'm wondering if these can compare to Monster brand cables because the price is really good but I am a little skeptical |
Answer: | These are thick cables i was impressed when i got them |
Question: | Does the cable have 3 wires for ground, positive and negative terminated at the 3-pin |
Answer: | Yes. This is what is known as a balanced cable. As such, it has a ground conductor and two additional conductors that carry the signal. Hence, three wires total. This is standard for professional, low impedance microphones; and interconnections between pro audio equipment such as mixers and power amplifier's. BTW, these are very good, especially considering the price. |
Question: | Why are they called microphone cables? Can I use them for pre-amp to power amp balanced audio interconnects |
Answer: | These are XLR cables. Maybe they called them that because it the one of the most common uses for this type of cable. Either way - They will work to make a balanced connection between 2 pieces of equipment with balanced xlr in/out connections. I use mine to connect a pre amp to an Interface. |
Question: | This is the price for two cables |
Answer: | Yes. 2 cables. Used them this past weekend. Sturdy. Worked fine. |

User questions & answers
Question: | will this work with numark mixtrack pro 2 microphone input |
Answer: | It should work. Your product says to connect a standard dynamic mic and they use a 3 conductor cable like the one you are looking at. The cable converts the XLR from the mic to TRS for the mic jack. (tip ring sleeve). |
Question: | I got a general question. If I am getting a direct box... does it matter if the cables are balanced or unbalanced |
Answer: | The idea behind a direct box is to take an unbalanced signal (cable) in and to put out a balanced signal (cable). |
Question: | I’m looking to connect my mackie mixing board to my focusrite 6i6 audio interface then the focusrite to my speakers. will these cables work for that |
Answer: | These cables will certainly work to patch the Mackie to the focusrite. Since I know nothing about your speakers I can't say for sure about that patch. Personally I use a 1/4" TRS to a split RCA cable to feed my little Presonus monitors and a TRS split to 1/4" feed the amp that drives my big old Altec monitors. I no longer do live or remote work but I used to and - in many years of using GLS cables- I have not had a failure of their products. These days I use a Mackie 1604 VLZ 3 feeding a Focusrite 18i8 that I supplement ( when needed) with an A.R.T. opto 8 . |
Question: | Will these work with dual acoustic drum triggers |
Answer: | Yes |

User questions & answers
Question: | these cables lookshorter than 6 feet on the picture |
Answer: | The cables I received were 6 feet. |
Question: | These look like stereo but doesnt say in the description. Are they stereo |
Answer: | These are a three contact (Balanced) cable. It's the same configuration you'd see for a 1/4" stereo plug, so if you're connecting a 1/4" stereo unit, yes, this will work, but the intention is for a balanced mono signal connection. |
Question: | Are these sold individually? I only need a dark blue/ purple one. I ordered the 6 pack but I need additional length on that color |
Answer: | I don't believe you can by individual cables. The standard packaging is the 6-color rainbow in a sealed bag. Maybe if you contact GLS Audio directly they could help you. I've been in your situation and just "bit the bullet" and bought a second 6-pack. I always seem to find a use for the "extras." |
Question: | I got a general question. Do all TRS cable serve as balanced mono? Are there TRS cables that send an unbalanced mono signal |
Answer: | http://tweakheadz.com/all-about-cables/ The TRS "Tip-ring-sleeve" cable (2-conductor plus ground) This is a cable for balanced signals just like XLR, it just has different connectors. *Note that TRS cables are typically used for mono, not stereo, signals in most studio gear. The exception being the headphone jack. The TS "Tip-sleeve" cable (2 conductor "phone jack") This cable is for unbalanced signals. These cables should be kept as short as possible. Keep them under 12 feet and away from power transformers (wall warts) or they may pick up dreaded hum and ruin your audio signal. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Don't laugh. i'm 68. how many of these to connect a marantz av8802a with a mm8077? thank you |
Answer: | Looks like the MM8077 have only 7 connections. Therefore, only 7 patch cables? Don't forget the length of each cable. |
Question: | are these (6) one foot cables that equal 6 feet or (6) six foot cables that add up to 36 feet |
Answer: | These are a quantity of 6 cables and each cable is 6 feet in length for a total of 36 feet. |
Question: | Can i connect these cable from my mixer output into my speaker monitors |
Answer: | Do you have XLR outputs on your mixer AND XLR inputs on your speakers? Is either, not both, mixer or speakers powered? Powered monitors or mixers means they include a power amplifier which is necessary to drive speakers, or headphones for that matter. I'm guessing if you're asking this question you have a lot to learn about hooking this stuff up. It's pretty basic. Figure out whether or not you've got a power amplifier in one unit or the other. If not then you're going to have to get one of those. Look at the output jacks on the mixer. Look at the input connections on the speaker (or power amp if needed). The connectors have a good chance of being different from each other. In that case you'll need an adapter cable that fits on both ends. Might be able to find one somewhere or you might have to fashion you own. Good Luck. |
Question: | does it fits for iphone |
Answer: | No these cables will Not fit an Iphone. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it possible that this mic cable can make a mic sound bassier? I bought this cable and my voice recordings sound really deep and im not sure if its |
Answer: | I don't think so. This is a quality cable that produces transparent microphone audio signals and frequencies. It is possible that your old cable may be affecting your microphone equalization. That said, make sure that your microphone and mixer/ mike preamplifier impedance and audio signal phasing are correct across your entire system. |
Question: | Is this a aes/ebu cable |
Answer: | No, it's not. It's a standard XLR cable, as it is 16AWG, its heavy for its length and has been very durable. |
Question: | The female connector broke after about 10 uses. Is there anyway to purchase a new head for the connector |
Answer: | Yes you can fix any XLR this way but you do need a to solder the 3 wires back on. Amazon sells both female and male XLR connectors. |
Question: | Is the 16awg on thew whole cable or on each pin in the cable? There are 3 pins in an XLR cable |
Answer: | I haven't taken this apart, but it's been my experience in the past that 16 gage means each wire. Love this company. Quality products for low prices. This works great for me. |
