12 best vhf radio antennas

VHF (Very High Frequency) radio antennas are specialized antennas designed for transmitting and receiving radio signals in the VHF frequency range, typically covering a range from 30 MHz to 300 MHz. These antennas are commonly used in various applications, including two-way radios, marine communication, aviation, public safety, and broadcasting. Here's what you need to know about VHF radio antennas:

  1. Frequency Range: VHF radio antennas are optimized to operate within the VHF frequency band, which is known for its relatively long wavelength and efficient propagation characteristics. This frequency range allows for reliable communication over moderate distances.

  2. Types of VHF Antennas:

    • Dipole Antennas: These are simple and commonly used VHF antennas, consisting of a straight, rod-like structure. Dipole antennas can be vertical or horizontal and are often used for FM radio and TV broadcasting.
    • Yagi-Uda Antennas: Yagi-Uda antennas are directional antennas with multiple elements, including a driven element and several parasitic elements. They offer high gain and are used for long-range communication.
    • Collinear Antennas: Collinear antennas consist of multiple vertically stacked dipole elements and are known for their omnidirectional radiation pattern. They are often used in marine and aviation communication.
    • Whip Antennas: Whip antennas are flexible, rod-like antennas commonly found on handheld VHF radios. They are compact and portable.
  3. Application Areas:

    • Marine Communication: VHF antennas are widely used in maritime applications for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication. They are crucial for safety and navigation.
    • Aviation Communication: Aircraft use VHF radios and antennas for air traffic control communication and inter-aircraft communication.
    • Public Safety: Law enforcement, firefighters, and other emergency services often rely on VHF radios and antennas for reliable communication during emergencies.
    • Two-Way Radios: VHF two-way radios with attached antennas are used in various industries for communication among team members.
  4. Antenna Placement: The performance of a VHF radio antenna is influenced by its placement and surroundings. Antennas should ideally be mounted as high as possible and away from obstructions to maximize their range.

  5. Gain and Radiation Pattern: Different VHF antennas have varying levels of gain and radiation patterns.Directional antennas offer higher gain but are more focused, while omnidirectional antennas have a 360-degree radiation pattern.

  6. Coaxial Cable: To connect VHF antennas to radio equipment, coaxial cables are commonly used. The choice of cable type and length can impact signal quality.

  7. Weather Resistance: VHF antennas, especially those used in outdoor or marine applications, are often designed to be weather-resistant to withstand exposure to the elements.

In summary, VHF radio antennas are essential components for communication in various fields, including marine, aviation, public safety, and more. They come in different types and are chosen based on specific needs and requirements, such as directional or omnidirectional coverage and gain. Proper installation and maintenance are crucial to ensure reliable VHF communication.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with a uniden um380bk
Answer: Yes it will.
Question: Does it work as FM antenna with the combination adapter
Answer: Yes you can buy a splitter for your FM reception needs
Question: why does this antenna require a battery
Answer: It does not require a battery. The description is wrong.
Question: Can this antenna be used on a gmrs radio
Answer: I am amateur radio operator N8VJM. I use antennas like this one and its "Big Brother" the 8' (co-phase) version. They tune up well enough to be used on 2 m (144-148 MHz Amateur Radio Band) a-well-as on 70 cm (420–450 MHz Amateur Radio Band). I run up to 50 watts without damaging the finals in my transceivers and more power with external amplifiers. GMRS and FRS have many channels at power levels of 5 w and lower, but some are as high as 50 w. Don't be fooled by thinking that SWR readings are an accurate measure of how useful an antenna and transmission line system are. The gain you achieve with a 46" antenna (in this case) should far outweigh the losses of the mismatch (as shown by higher-than-normal SWR) versus a 6.3" plain whip intended for GMRS/FRS use. I don't gamble, but I would be willing to bet money that people in-the-know (experienced radio operators, techs, and engineers) are using similar antennas successfully. The seller cannot recommend that you try using this antenna OOB (out-of-band) because they would then be liable if it didn't work well for you or damaged your equipment. You might even try a split ferrite bead about 6 or 7 inches down the coax from the antenna. It should serve to lower your SWR to protect your finals and may even improve performance. Bottom line, this is a $40-something antenna. I think you can probably shell out that much for an experiment. Worse case scenario, sell it on eBay for just about what you paid for it (if it doesn't work well for you).

User questions & answers

Question: Will this directly replace my broken 5206 C
Answer: This will work with almost any VHF Marine Radio. You will need to know how to follow directions when shortening cable, if necessary, or attaching the terminal fitting. Should be no problem instructions available.
Question: Is the PL-259 connector attached, or separate (solder or crimp?) to allow for easy cable routing
Answer: Separate. Why would you want the connector attached? That would require a huge hole to pass-through. The instructions are clear and installing the connector is easy.BTW, I have a 23' runabout and the 8 ft mast is overkill, the 4' would have been just fine.
Question: Can I get a mount that doesn't have the swivel .i mean just fixed straight up ,on a flat surface
Answer: Yes. The antenna doesn't come with the mount. It is a standard attachment, so it should attach to most antenna mounts. Here is one on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Style-Marine-Mount-Antenna-Radar/dp/B000S5VBG4/ref=sr_1_2?s=boating-water-sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1404392614&sr=1-2&keywords=marine+antenna+mount
Question: Is this antenna telescoping? It looks like it is, but just cannot tell for sure
Answer: No it is one piece. It is just a horrible picture that makes it look like it is telescoping. It is smooth and straight. I get great reception with it.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the retractable version good or bad? There's a lot of mixed reviews
Answer: The antenna I receuved was not a retractable, the one I have works superbly! The non retractable one is very limber, it will stand straight up and down but it's not so stiff that you it won't flex quite a bit. I feel any retractable antenna would diminish the value of using an antenna like this one. If you need a short antenna, then buy a short antenna, they are cheap and I have multiple antennas for multiple situations. If I'm working a festival with base station close, I run a short rubber duck, if I'm mobile/driving and will be far from a repeater or using simplex. I use this. I would recommend you buy a non retractable.
Question: Is it safe to transmit with the antenna fully retracted? Can it harm the radio
Answer: NO! The equation for an antenna length is: 2808/frequency=length in inches As stated by the Mfg: "When you are only receiving and not transmitting you can conveniently retract the antenna down to only 4 inches." So the only frequency that has a SWR of 1:1 is around 700 Mhz. If you increase the length up to about 6.3" than you could Tx at: 440 Mhz but that's it. You need to increase the length up to 12.7" for 220 Mhz. You need to increase all the way to the 16" mark for 175 Mhz. But that's not going to get you under the 3:1 SWR you will need for 2M at 146 Mhz. For that you need to get to a length of 19.2". So for all practical purposes this antenna is not suitable for Ham radio TX. Or even the MARS applications at the 150's Mhz range.
Question: is their a better antenna than this one
Answer: As a whip? Not really. Other types; then yes. A Nelson Slim Jim is my favorite. String it up a tree 10' high and i can hit a repeater 60 miles away on 8W with a 5-9 (thats perfect) come back. With this 771 whip, i can hit a repeater 30 miles away with same results... But think of it as I live in florida and the higher the antenna, the better (less trees and buildings interfering). A beam antenna will concentrate signals one direction. My 3 el handi is what i use to pick up AMSAT chatter. So the word "best" is purely up to the task. I have this antenna on my UV-5RTP unless im backpacking or tracking. Compared to all whips, this one is my favorite. Get it.
Question: Amazon says it has a max power of 10w but Baofeng has it at 5w. which is correct
Answer: BOTH ARE CORRECT. The BaoFeng radio puts out 5 watts maximum. This antenna is capable of handling up to 10 watts maximum. Your BaoFeng radio will still be transmitting at 5 watts, but if you ever chose to connect this antenna to some other radio that produced up to a 10 watt signal, it would still work. Any higher and you would fry the radio.

Extend the Range of Your Communication

Most Nagoya antennas will increase your radio's transmitting gain compared to their factory antenna.

In most cases: the longer the antenna is the better the antenna is capable of boosting weak frequencies and receiving difficult to hear stations. Shorter antennas offer more portability and convenience, while longer antennas generally perform better.

  • 3dB gain
  • 1"-14 threaded mount

User questions & answers

Question: what is the length of the cable
Answer: I just unpacked my Shakespeare 5104 (4 foot) antenna. The cable measured exactly 15 ft. 8 inches from the base of the antenna.
Question: What is the range of the antenna
Answer: The range of this antenna is the full vhf marine band...156-158 MHz. Plus marine wx. 162 MHz.
Question: Please list the maximum receiving distance of this antenna
Answer: Your transmit and receive ranges will vary according to the height above the water that you mount your antenna, and the height of the receiving antenna. VHF is line of sight transmit & receive, so for boat to boat probably about 3-5 miles unless one of the boats has a very tall antenna, then it would be further.
Question: Can I mount this antenna to my mast
Answer: Earl, I would buy the TRAM 1600-HC 35 antenna or similar model. The 5104 screws on to a base that may be difficult to mount on a mast.

Question: I plan to use this antenna with a rtl-sdr for ais tracking; has anybody done that
Answer: It should work. Not for RTL-SDR but people have used this with dAISy AIS receiver. See: https://irondaleirregulars.com/2016/08/05/constructing-an-ais-receiver-with-a-raspberry-pi-3/
Question: How do i get the PL259 into the mast on my sailboat without leaving a .75" hole allowing water to run inside the mast and the hole cutting the cable
Answer: You can use a split-gland liquid-tight cordgrip for the antenna cable to seal the hole in the mast, or you can put a connector on after running the cable. In the second case, you'll still need to seal around the cable or use a rubber grommet to protect the cable and seal the opening.
Question: Does this antenna come with the co-ax cable
Answer: As I remember...Yes...works great too...
Question: How long is the cable? Can it be trimmed to length
Answer: 15ft RG58A/U coaxial cable with PL-259 / no

User questions & answers

Question: How many channels does it get
Answer: Plugging one end into the pc and one into a microphone should work.
Question: Is there an advantage to using short range if you're within 35 miles over long range
Answer: I can't say , since I haven't purchased many 1/8" cables, but I felt the set I bought were heavier gauge than the ones I have purchased, and better than I expected for the price.
Question: What if my tv doesn't have a Ant/in or cable in port
Answer: Sugar and spice and everything nice.
Question: Does this work well in Venice FL area
Answer: Your lifeproof case should come with an adapter that has threads on the male aux end that allows it to screw up into the case and connect properly. So you just have to plug this cable into the female end of that adapter just like you would your headphones and it would work. If you do not have the adapter however I would say the cable end would not fit all the way into your phone unless you took it out of the case. If this link shows up, this is the adapter I am talking about. A similar adapter should come with your lifeproof case when you buy it. http://www.amazon.com/Vastar-Replacement-LifeProof-Headphone-Connector/dp/B00XSP4C3U?ie=UTF8&keywords=lifeproof%20adapter&psc=1&qid=1460761474&ref_=sr_1_2&sr=8-2-spons

User questions & answers

Question: does this antenna come with coxial cable
Answer: Yes. The antenna comes with 15' of white RG58 coax cable.
Question: What type of mount comes with it, i have a pontoon and I'm looking to mount it on a side rail or bimini top rail
Answer: It is rail mount capable
Question: Does this work for am/fm boat stereo receiver
Answer: No, this antenna is designed to work in 156.650-157.425MHz range.
Question: What's the length of this antenna? I read 36 inches on product details
Answer: It can't be 6dB gain, that's not possible in 36 inch height, sorry :(. The reason is that at 36 inches it's just at 1/2 wavelength, and that makes it equal to a dipole, which is 2.14dB gain (over full spherical isotropic). But, at 36 inches tall it's a nice size to be able to put in locations that 8ft antennas won't fit, like maybe higher up thus getting it's 2.14dB gain up higher above the water. Actually, this antenna placed about 6ft above the water will work better than an 8ft antenna with a base closer to the water. Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with a 40 channel CB radio as well? How many watts is it equivalent to
Answer: Definitely not -- CB is 27MHz, and this antenna is for much higher frequencies. Don't use for CB.
Question: Does this antenna require a ground plane
Answer: Not just a Good DC Ground, It needs a Ground Plane which will be lop-sided with most signal occuring toward the metal parts of the vehicle. Mos every ant SYSTEM need 2 parts---the antennas whip or radiator in the radome PLUS the ground plane as the other half. There ARE special MARINE TYPE antennas for boats, corvettes, Mobile Brand Street sweepers, etc.
Question: Is this a magnet antenna
Answer: No! This must be screwed into a Magnet NMO Mounting. (3 5/8") Magnet. This is ok for Receiving on your 2 meter radio but not good for TX. 5 SWR on the meter.
Question: Does this antenna require a ground plane
