13 best radio scanners
Radio scanners are electronic devices designed to receive and listen to a wide range of radio frequencies, including those used by law enforcement, emergency services, aviation, marine, amateur radio operators, and more. These devices are often used by hobbyists, radio enthusiasts, and professionals who need to monitor or scan various radio bands for communication and information gathering. Here are some key points about radio scanners:
Frequency Coverage: Radio scanners typically cover a broad spectrum of radio frequencies. They can tune into VHF (Very High Frequency), UHF (Ultra High Frequency), and sometimes even HF (High Frequency) bands. The frequency range a scanner can cover depends on its design and capabilities.
Channels and Memory: Many modern scanners come equipped with programmable memory channels. Users can store frequently monitored frequencies and quickly access them. This feature allows users to organize and scan through specific channels efficiently.
Modes: Scanners can receive various modulation modes, including AM (Amplitude Modulation), FM (Frequency Modulation), NFM (Narrowband FM), P25, and more.Different modes are used for different types of communication systems, such as analog voice or digital transmissions.
Search and Scan: Scanners offer both search and scan modes. In search mode, they can sweep through a range of frequencies to identify active channels. Scan mode allows users to monitor preprogrammed channels or stored frequencies for activity.
Advanced Features: Some high-end scanners include advanced features like trunking and digital decoding. Trunking allows users to monitor complex radio systems used by public safety agencies and businesses. Digital decoding enables the reception of encrypted or digital communication, which is becoming more common in many radio networks.
Antennas: Antennas play a crucial role in a scanner's performance. Users often upgrade or customize their antennas to improve reception. Directional antennas can help focus on a specific signal source.
Legal Considerations: It's essential to be aware of the legalities of using radio scanners in your region. Some jurisdictions have restrictions on the use of scanners, especially if they can receive certain frequencies like police or emergency services. Always adhere to local laws and regulations.
Applications: Radio scanners have various applications, including hobbyist listening, monitoring public safety and emergency services, staying informed about weather conditions, and supporting amateur radio operations.
Programming: Many scanners can be programmed using computer software, which simplifies the process of adding and organizing frequencies.
In conclusion, radio scanners are versatile devices used for monitoring and receiving a wide range of radio frequencies. They are commonly used by hobbyists, enthusiasts, and professionals to stay informed, participate in amateur radio activities, or simply explore the world of radio communication. It's important to use them responsibly and within the legal framework of your jurisdiction.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this scanner work for a “multi-agency radio communications project 25 phase 1 trunked” system |
Answer: | I live seven miles from a SMALL town, live in a house with a metal roof and it works great. |
Question: | is this a digital scanner |
Answer: | See the answer from Ron below. I have the same questions. Make sure the scanner isn't defective. If it will not accept any programming at all, assuming you're doing it correctly, you may want to return it. I have this particular scanner and I found it easy to program, but I'm familiar with scanners so it was easy for me. There are some good videos online; google for "How to program the BC365CRS scanner" and you'll probably get some helpful videos. Sometimes these videos are better than the instructions that came with the scanner. If you know someone who is familiar with scanners, get their help in programming, using the scanner instructions. Proper programming requires following the instructions correctly and to the letter, which can sometimes be confusing. Not all scanner instructions are clear/understandable, especially if you're not familiar with scanners. |
Question: | can it scan |
Answer: | This is powered off of an included ac adaptor and can also take backup batteries |
Question: | What is the rear external antenna connector |
Answer: | We had to program the frequencies ourselves. Also we returned this item because we did not realize it was a basic analog scanner. It will not pick up digital or trunked systems. Most police/fire/state troopers have gone to digital and/or trunked systems. You might want to check your area first before purchasing. We learned the hard way! |

User questions & answers
Question: | will it pickup viper |
Answer: | Yes, This Radio will receive unencrypted calls from the NC Viper system. |
Question: | Will this work with the new Des Moines Ia sytem |
Answer: | Not well. Des Moines is on the Iowa Statewide Interoperable Communications System (ISICS) which uses many simulcast sites. If you’re in range of two towers broadcasting the same frequency you will have issues. The SDS100 and 200 are the only current Uniden scanners to handle simulcast well. |
Question: | Is this model preprogamed |
Answer: | This uniden BCD996P2 Digital scanner is not preprogrammed, you have to program it your self, Note: it takes a little while to program ,but it can be done, I would recommend theses scanners that are already preprogrammed simply by entering your zip code and they are the Whistler WS1095 digital scanner - Uniden Home Patrol 2 scanner and the Uniden BCD 536HP. I Hope you find this answer helpful. Copsfan |
Question: | Can this 996P2 radio use the Uniden BC-GPSK Serial GPS Receiver for Scanner and Marine Products to get GPS input |
Answer: | I have the 996P2 with this GPS set but what is missing with Uniden is a Bios update as on MENU look into the GPS and on the current BIOS there is NO RANGE. I live in Raynham,Bristol, Massachusetts and why do I get , in my car a frequency of a city over 20 miles . I want to set the GPS only to 5 miles. You have to pressure Paul from Uniden to update the Bios that you may see in looking for Bios for the 996P2 |

Product features
Display Synchronization
An exciting, new feature on the UV‑5X3 takes full advantage of the LCD's dual line display. In the past the dual display allowed you to monitor two different frequencies at once. Unfortunately, for user's that only wanted to monitor a single channel, the secondary line was of no use... until the UV‑5X3!
The UV‑5X3 allows users, who want to display the most information at once, to synchronize the display. This allows the LCD to show both the channel's frequency and channel name simultaneously. Display synchronization allows the user to maximize the available information seen at a glance!
Modify the Scanning List
A brand new menu allows for one of the biggest conveniences while scanning: Modifying the Scanning List!
Before the UV‑5X3, you couldn't manage the channel scan list without a computer. The brand new menu in the UV‑5X3 allows you to easily add and remove channels from the scanning list. Have a nuicanse channel that you want removed from the scan list? You no longer need to go home to a computer to remove it: A simple menu allows you modify your channel scan list without a computer
Channel Mode Modifications
The UV‑5X3 comes out of the rut that all other UV‑5 series radios are stuck in. The UV‑5X3, built with the amateur radio operator in mind, allows channel modifications on-the-fly.
Previously and on other current UV‑5 models, you were forced to delete a channel and then recreate it from scratch if you wanted to alter any settings.
The UV‑5X3 allows common edits to the channels: Such as adding, changing, or removing the privacy tones (CTCSS & DCS); or changing the power level. You no longer have to delete and recreate the channel over simple channel modifications.
Scan a Frequency Range
Scanning in frequency mode, just became practical! Exclusively on the BTECH UV‑5X3: You are able to scan through a specific frequency range.
Scanning frequencies before the UV‑5X3 required the user to scan the full frequency band they were using. This was not practical if you only wanted to watch for activity on a particular section of the band (such as only 222-225MHz in the above pictured example). The UV‑5X3 will scan at the frequency step you select in menu, which allows you to scan by increments from 2.5 to 50KHz. You can now scan through a fine tuned portion of the receiving band without having to wait and scan the whole band!

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work with 900 mhz |
Answer: | Hey Drakkenfyre barring any manufacturing anomalies the UV-5R accessories, including batteries and the BL-5L, should be compatible with the 5x3. Essentially they are the same radio outside, just different electronics/firmware inside. If you are unlucky to get one of the bad batteries visit the Miklor.com web site for all information about the radio, and this http://kj4ajp.mambm.com/BL5L/ for repairing the battery to make it fit. Hope this helps. |
Question: | We cannot pick anything up. All static. Occasionally fire department. What's the problem |
Answer: | This radio uses all the battery options and accessories that fit the UV-5R or the BF-F8HP. So yes. You can use both the AAA and the AA battery eliminators as well as the extended batteries.Hope this helps. |
Question: | Can I pick up police frequencies with this? I live in a high crime and would like to listen in to the chatter for pure entertainment purposes |
Answer: | All radio transmitters and some other emitters must have FCC certification. Commercial and public service require Part 90 certification. Other services like FRS and GMRS fall under other parts of the rules. As part of the certification process the FCC issues an FCC ID number for each design of transmitter. I have used the FCC ID to determine the frequency range and modulation type of radios before by doing a Google search of the number. There is also a search page on the FCC site. The only radio service exempt from these regulations is Amateur Radio. Ham radio operators are directly responsible for their emissions and have demonstrated sufficient knowledge of the rules and electronics by passing an exam. Most of the Chinese radios are therefore marketed to Ham radio operators since most do not have any FCC certification. They are also not legal to use on commercial, FRS and GMRS frequencies unless they have the FCC certification number or a sticker with the numbers on them. The UV-5X3 is a perfect example. The sticker under the battery affixed to the radio calls it an Amateur radio and there is no reference to FCC certification or ID. There are some of the UV-5R radios that have a part 90 certification sticker on them but they are mostly the older models like the UV-5RV2+. If programmed correctly so the end user can not operate the radio on frequencies they are not authorized to use they can be used for commercial and public service. They are not certified and are not legal to use for FRS and GMRS even with the part 90 certification. |
Question: | DO YOU NEED AN OUTSIDE ANTENA |
Answer: | We have a 100watt repeater (before 2013) for local / regional and achieve 200 miles every day, and a few long haul repeaters that are 1.5KW to backhaul between other repeaters and their base stations. We could use VoIP between repeaters, we are just blessed to have a mountaintop that we use, and just expanded as another liscense holder gave up their space, so we have another relay tower. For security I won't say where, but you likely have used it without knowing. So listen to everyone here and join your regional and national clubs. They fund 30-40-% of our operations. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this sds200 better than a radio shack pro-197 in shiawassee mi |
Answer: | No. This one is analog you would need digital |
Question: | Will the scanner pic up |
Answer: | Sounds like an antenna problem. Make sure the built-in antenna is securely connected. Also try an external antenna if that doesn't work. |
Question: | Does this come with the telescoping antenna |
Answer: | In 2018, most likely NO. This is an analog scanner. Most police and rescue are using digital systems these days. This isn't the fault of the scanner; you need to buy a digital scanner to hear police and rescue traffic in your area. This is the case in most of the USA in 2018. |
Question: | Does this scanner have a playback function? Sometimes I miss the calls and would like to play back a call |
Answer: | NO you do not need an "OUTSIDE" Antenna! In fact some may even DAMAGE your scanner! One Addition might be a Long Telescoping Antenna with a BNC Connection available on AMAZON that does in fact HELP your reception without damaging your scanner. Don't plan on "RUNNING AROUND" though when it is Connected and extended!! At this writing they go for $9.99 for 2. "Baosity 2pcs 7 Sections Telescopic Antennas w/BNC Connector for Portable Radio Scanner" I've used one on my RADIO SHACK Scanners for quite awhile! Happy Scanning!! |
