12 best radio scanner antennas
Radio scanner antennas are specialized antennas designed to receive a wide range of radio frequencies, allowing users to monitor various signals, including those from public safety agencies, aviation, marine, amateur radio, and more. These antennas are essential components for radio enthusiasts, emergency services personnel, and hobbyists interested in monitoring radio communications.
Here are some key points about radio scanner antennas:
Frequency Range: Radio scanner antennas are designed to cover a broad frequency spectrum. They are often specified by their frequency range in megahertz (MHz) or gigahertz (GHz). Some antennas are designed for specific frequency bands, while others are capable of receiving a wide range of frequencies.
Design and Construction: These antennas come in various designs, including whip antennas, discone antennas, yagi antennas, and ground-plane antennas. The choice of design depends on the specific frequencies the user wants to monitor and the surrounding environment.
Gain: The gain of an antenna refers to its ability to focus energy in a specific direction. Higher gain antennas can receive weaker signals and are typically used when trying to pull in signals from a distance.
Directionality: Some scanner antennas are designed to be omnidirectional, meaning they receive signals from all directions equally. Others are directional, meaning they are optimized to receive signals from a specific direction. Directional antennas are often used for long-distance reception.
Mounting Options: Scanner antennas can be mounted in various ways. They can be installed on a mast, mounted on a roof, attached to a vehicle, or placed indoors. The choice of mounting depends on factors such as location, intended use, and available space.
Weather Resistance: Depending on the installation location, it's important to consider the weather resistance of the antenna. Outdoor antennas should be designed to withstand exposure to the elements.
Coaxial Cable: The type and length of coaxial cable used to connect the antenna to the scanner can impact signal quality. High-quality, low-loss coaxial cable is typically recommended for optimal performance.
Grounding: Proper grounding of the antenna is crucial for safety and performance. It helps protect against lightning strikes and can improve reception.
Interference and Noise: Radio scanner enthusiasts often use filters and other accessories to reduce interference and noise from nearby electronic devices.
Regulations and Licensing: It's important to be aware of local regulations and licensing requirements when using scanner antennas, especially for certain frequencies and applications.
In summary, radio scanner antennas are specialized antennas designed to receive a wide range of radio frequencies for monitoring purposes. They come in various designs and configurations to suit different needs and environments. Proper selection, installation, and maintenance of the antenna are crucial for optimal performance and safety.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work https://www.amazon.com/channel-master-antenna-steel-cm-1805/dp/b000sonaj6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=utf8&qid=1547360230&sr=8-4&keywords=channel+ma |
Answer: | 1 3/8" (35mm) maximum mast diameter |
Question: | Would this work on a 2 meter ham radio |
Answer: | I don't have mine up yet, but it says it will. Antenna Frequency Range is 25-1300 MHz. 2 meter band operates 144-148 MHz. |
Question: | How does this differ from the Tram 1410? I know the 1411 has a whip but what does that get you? Better transmit or additional frequencies |
Answer: | Hi Gadget,They are both wide-band HF-VHF-UHF receive antennas. They are full broadband for receive only (like for a scanner) and are both optimized for Amateur Radio bands for transmitting. For transmitting, the 1410 is limited to VHF & UHF frequencies at 200W max. The 1411 will transmit on all three bands with 300W max on HF and 200W max on VHF & UHF; this one has tuned radials and an additional vertical whip for HF. Here's a link to look at: http://www.theantennafarm.com/catalog/antennas-191/base-antennas-193/discone-scanner-base-antennas-256/BTW: Tram is an aftermarket knockoff of Diamond Discone Antennas (as well as other manufacturers). They work, but the quality is much less than Diamond. |
Question: | Can you use 1-1/4" conduit as a mast or does the end need to be tapered |
Answer: | 1 1/4" emt conduit was a hair too big to fit into mine. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this need to be grounded |
Answer: | I have a very difficult time opening and closing the one I have at my house and the one at my daughter's house. Especially if I'm carrying a child and trying to do it one-handed. Many times I'll get it open, walk through, but then have to set the baby down in order to use both hands to close it. |
Question: | Please tell me is this antenna suitable for narrow banded frequencies |
Answer: | You can, but it is not stable, you will need to stabilize it somehow. We put the ends of the gate between heavy furniture and the wall which helps, but it is much more stable when used as the pen. The instructions say not to use it as a long barrier. |
Question: | can this antenna be tuned to CB |
Answer: | Yes, there is a little button on the outside of the gate that you push up or down to open or lock the latch on top. |
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | I bought 2 extensions and 2 of the superyards for a total of 16 panels combined. I have almost completely enclosed my open concept living room with this setup. I'm actually looking to buy another set of these to completely enclose the room and give my kids an entire room to play in. The thing to keep in mind is that the panels act as either a male or female component on the end. This means that you can theoretically chain any number of them together as long as you arrange them properly (i.e. have some with the doors opening inward with others having the doors opening outward. The real limiting factor is stability. With chaining so many together, you either need to shape the panels into corners like a star to gain structural integrity or do what I did and use my sectional and other soft furniture as a support structure so it won't fall over. Overall, it's a pretty great product. Only complaint is the doors are easy to push through if they throw their whole body into it. I buried the doors behind my furniture so the kids don't have access to them and we just step over the walls to get in and out. Not ideal, but works well. I have a 1 year old and soon-to-be 3 year old and it contains both well with my setup. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it work on a radio shack pro 97 handheld? scanner |
Answer: | As long as your scanner has a bnc type connecter it will work! If not, you will need an adapter! |
Question: | Does this work with 27 MHz Handheld cb |
Answer: | No, it could work on 50 to 225 MHz on a transmitter side, but it won't work on the UHF transceiver after I've tried to tune that antenna on my antenna analyzer. But it will work good on 20 to 1300 MHz on a receiver, or a scanner, or a shortwave receiver pick up on WWV on 10 MHz and 15 MHz with a strong signal condition, or shortwave broadcast radio stations with a strong signal condition, and those local AM broadcast radio stations with a strong signal. |
Question: | Will this work on a midland |
Answer: | Midland 75-822 is a CB radio. For Americans that's 4w AM around 27 to 28mhz. That's in the advertised range, but you'd want to be careful to tune it (and then never change the length!) before use to avoid burning out the radio. |
Question: | How far can it reach on a bc75xlt |
Answer: | I don't understand your question. Are you asking about how long the antenna is or how much it will improve the performance of the radio? If it's the range of the radio, it will do better on VHF high band than the standard rubber antenna if the rod is extended to about 18". It's generally not a matter of range but improving the signal strength and readability of existing weak signals. If the station you want is in the VHF low band (30-50 MHz) or CB (27 MHz), this antenna will make a substantial improvement over a standard rubber antenna. Range is dependent on too many factors to make a definite statement about improvement but, in most cases, you can expect a 25-30% improvement in range. A consideration with a small handheld like the BC75XLT is that this antenna is quite heavy because it has so many sections. It's likely the radio would easily topple over while sitting on a flat surface. It's about four feet long fully extended. |
