13 best police scanner antennas
Police scanner antennas are specialized radio antennas designed to enhance the reception capabilities of police scanners, also known as police radio scanners or simply scanners. These antennas are used by hobbyists, radio enthusiasts, emergency services personnel, and law enforcement agencies to receive and monitor radio communications, including police, fire, emergency services, and other public safety frequencies. Here's what you need to know about police scanner antennas:
Enhanced Reception: Police scanner antennas are designed to improve the reception of radio signals in the VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) bands, which are commonly used by public safety agencies.
Types:
- Base Station Antennas: These are typically larger antennas designed for stationary use at a fixed location, such as a home or office. They are mounted on rooftops or poles to maximize signal reception.
- Mobile Antennas: Mobile scanner antennas are smaller and more compact, making them suitable for use in vehicles. They can be magnetically or permanently mounted on a vehicle's roof, trunk, or another location.
- Portable Antennas: Portable scanner antennas are designed for handheld or portable scanners. They are compact and can be connected to the scanner via a coaxial cable.
Antenna Gain: Police scanner antennas are often described in terms of gain, which measures their ability to focus on signals from a particular direction. Higher gain antennas can improve reception over longer distances but may have a narrower beam width.
Frequency Range: Ensure that the scanner antenna you choose covers the frequency range of the signals you want to monitor. Public safety agencies operate in various frequency bands, so select an antenna that matches your needs.
Connector Type: Scanner antennas typically have coaxial connectors, such as BNC or SMA, that need to be compatible with your scanner's antenna input.
Mounting Options: Consider where and how you plan to mount the antenna.Base station antennas may require mounting brackets or poles, while mobile antennas often have magnetic mounts or other mounting options suitable for vehicles.
Weather Resistance: For outdoor antennas, it's essential to choose models that are weather-resistant or designed for outdoor use to withstand environmental conditions.
Coaxial Cable: The quality and length of the coaxial cable connecting the antenna to the scanner can affect signal reception. High-quality, low-loss coaxial cable is recommended for optimal performance.
Scanner Location: The effectiveness of your police scanner antenna also depends on its placement. For best results, position the antenna in a location with a clear line of sight to the transmitting towers.
Legal Considerations: Be aware of local laws and regulations regarding the use of police scanners and antennas, as some jurisdictions may have restrictions on their use.
In summary, police scanner antennas are essential accessories for radio enthusiasts and individuals interested in monitoring public safety communications. The choice of antenna type and features should align with your specific scanning needs and the environment in which you intend to use it. A well-chosen scanner antenna can significantly improve your ability to receive clear and reliable radio transmissions from law enforcement and emergency services.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it work on a radio shack pro 97 handheld? scanner |
Answer: | As long as your scanner has a bnc type connecter it will work! If not, you will need an adapter! |
Question: | Does this work with 27 MHz Handheld cb |
Answer: | No, it could work on 50 to 225 MHz on a transmitter side, but it won't work on the UHF transceiver after I've tried to tune that antenna on my antenna analyzer. But it will work good on 20 to 1300 MHz on a receiver, or a scanner, or a shortwave receiver pick up on WWV on 10 MHz and 15 MHz with a strong signal condition, or shortwave broadcast radio stations with a strong signal condition, and those local AM broadcast radio stations with a strong signal. |
Question: | Will this work on a midland |
Answer: | Midland 75-822 is a CB radio. For Americans that's 4w AM around 27 to 28mhz. That's in the advertised range, but you'd want to be careful to tune it (and then never change the length!) before use to avoid burning out the radio. |
Question: | How far can it reach on a bc75xlt |
Answer: | I don't understand your question. Are you asking about how long the antenna is or how much it will improve the performance of the radio? If it's the range of the radio, it will do better on VHF high band than the standard rubber antenna if the rod is extended to about 18". It's generally not a matter of range but improving the signal strength and readability of existing weak signals. If the station you want is in the VHF low band (30-50 MHz) or CB (27 MHz), this antenna will make a substantial improvement over a standard rubber antenna. Range is dependent on too many factors to make a definite statement about improvement but, in most cases, you can expect a 25-30% improvement in range. A consideration with a small handheld like the BC75XLT is that this antenna is quite heavy because it has so many sections. It's likely the radio would easily topple over while sitting on a flat surface. It's about four feet long fully extended. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does this pick up apco p25 phase II |
Answer: | Of course it does! Even a bedspring used as an anttenna will pick up rf signals. I think your question is, how well does it do on the upper bands and yes it does well. I just drove from Phoenix to Rocky Point, MX & I am empressed with performance attached to my BCD436HP scanner. Picked up much along the way and had solid 800mhz past Ajo & performance on military aircraft on Barry Goldwater Range was all the way 70 miles south of the border. |
Question: | work with a cb |
Answer: | You might be able to listen to 11 meters but I would not try to talk on it. Also it doesn't have a pl 259 connection |
Question: | will this antenna hook up to my bingfu hand held |
Answer: | Only if you have a bnc connector. I'm pretty sure it's set up for receiving at any rate. |
Question: | Can the cable be made longer by adding another length of cable to it |
Answer: | Yes that is exactly what I did when I put the antenna on my roof. |

Answer: | 1 3/8" (35mm) maximum mast diameter |
Question: | Would this work on a 2 meter ham radio |
Answer: | I don't have mine up yet, but it says it will. Antenna Frequency Range is 25-1300 MHz. 2 meter band operates 144-148 MHz. |
Question: | How does this differ from the Tram 1410? I know the 1411 has a whip but what does that get you? Better transmit or additional frequencies |
Answer: | Hi Gadget,They are both wide-band HF-VHF-UHF receive antennas. They are full broadband for receive only (like for a scanner) and are both optimized for Amateur Radio bands for transmitting. For transmitting, the 1410 is limited to VHF & UHF frequencies at 200W max. The 1411 will transmit on all three bands with 300W max on HF and 200W max on VHF & UHF; this one has tuned radials and an additional vertical whip for HF. Here's a link to look at: http://www.theantennafarm.com/catalog/antennas-191/base-antennas-193/discone-scanner-base-antennas-256/BTW: Tram is an aftermarket knockoff of Diamond Discone Antennas (as well as other manufacturers). They work, but the quality is much less than Diamond. |
Question: | Can you use 1-1/4" conduit as a mast or does the end need to be tapered |
Answer: | 1 1/4" emt conduit was a hair too big to fit into mine. |
