9 best external antenna for police scanner
An external antenna for a police scanner is a crucial accessory that can significantly enhance the reception and performance of your scanner radio. Police scanners, also known as police radios or scanner radios, are used by hobbyists, radio enthusiasts, and emergency service monitors to tune in to various public safety and emergency services, including police, fire, EMS, and other radio transmissions. Here's what you need to know about external antennas for police scanners:
Enhanced Reception: An external antenna can improve the reception quality and range of your police scanner. It allows you to receive signals from a greater distance and with better clarity, which is especially important for monitoring emergency services.
Types of External Antennas:
- Base Station Antennas: These are designed for fixed locations, such as your home or office. Base station antennas are usually larger and more powerful, providing extended coverage.
- Mobile Antennas: Mobile antennas are suitable for use in vehicles, allowing you to receive signals while on the go. They come in various designs, including magnetic mount, roof mount, and trunk lip mount antennas.
Antenna Placement: Proper placement of the external antenna is essential for optimal performance. It should be installed as high as possible and in a location free from obstructions. For mobile antennas, placing them on the roof or trunk of your vehicle is common.
Frequency Range: Consider the frequency range that your police scanner covers when selecting an external antenna. Make sure the antenna is designed to cover the specific frequency bands you intend to monitor.
Gain: Antennas may have gain ratings that determine how effectively they can capture and transmit signals. Higher gain antennas can capture weaker signals, but they may also be more directional.
Cable and Connectors: The quality of the coaxial cable used to connect the antenna to the scanner is important. Use high-quality, low-loss cables to minimize signal degradation. Ensure the connectors are compatible with your scanner and antenna.
Lightning Protection: If you are installing an external antenna for your base station scanner, consider using lightning protection devices to safeguard your equipment from lightning strikes.
Regulations and Permits: Some locations may have regulations or require permits for installing external antennas, especially for base stations. It's important to check local regulations and obtain any necessary permits before installation.
Installation: The installation of an external antenna may require some technical expertise. Many users choose to have their antennas professionally installed, especially for base station setups.
By investing in an external antenna for your police scanner, you can significantly enhance your ability to monitor public safety and emergency services, ensuring you don't miss important updates during critical situations. Proper installation and maintenance of the antenna are essential to ensure it performs optimally and lasts for an extended period.

User questions & answers
Question: | does this pick up apco p25 phase II |
Answer: | Of course it does! Even a bedspring used as an anttenna will pick up rf signals. I think your question is, how well does it do on the upper bands and yes it does well. I just drove from Phoenix to Rocky Point, MX & I am empressed with performance attached to my BCD436HP scanner. Picked up much along the way and had solid 800mhz past Ajo & performance on military aircraft on Barry Goldwater Range was all the way 70 miles south of the border. |
Question: | work with a cb |
Answer: | You might be able to listen to 11 meters but I would not try to talk on it. Also it doesn't have a pl 259 connection |
Question: | will this antenna hook up to my bingfu hand held |
Answer: | Only if you have a bnc connector. I'm pretty sure it's set up for receiving at any rate. |
Question: | Can the cable be made longer by adding another length of cable to it |
Answer: | Yes that is exactly what I did when I put the antenna on my roof. |

Question: | Will this work https://www.amazon.com/channel-master-antenna-steel-cm-1805/dp/b000sonaj6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=utf8&qid=1547360230&sr=8-4&keywords=channel+ma |
Answer: | 1 3/8" (35mm) maximum mast diameter |
Question: | Would this work on a 2 meter ham radio |
Answer: | I don't have mine up yet, but it says it will. Antenna Frequency Range is 25-1300 MHz. 2 meter band operates 144-148 MHz. |
Question: | How does this differ from the Tram 1410? I know the 1411 has a whip but what does that get you? Better transmit or additional frequencies |
Answer: | Hi Gadget,They are both wide-band HF-VHF-UHF receive antennas. They are full broadband for receive only (like for a scanner) and are both optimized for Amateur Radio bands for transmitting. For transmitting, the 1410 is limited to VHF & UHF frequencies at 200W max. The 1411 will transmit on all three bands with 300W max on HF and 200W max on VHF & UHF; this one has tuned radials and an additional vertical whip for HF. Here's a link to look at: http://www.theantennafarm.com/catalog/antennas-191/base-antennas-193/discone-scanner-base-antennas-256/BTW: Tram is an aftermarket knockoff of Diamond Discone Antennas (as well as other manufacturers). They work, but the quality is much less than Diamond. |
Question: | Can you use 1-1/4" conduit as a mast or does the end need to be tapered |
Answer: | 1 1/4" emt conduit was a hair too big to fit into mine. |
