Answer:	I don't think it is? But you could always apply a waterproof spray which will only protect the upper of the boot. It may still leak-water thru the goodyear welting on the soles.

Answer:	No they are not shiny or I would have sent them back. The bottom of the boot is painted metallic silver. I have thought of taking them and having them professionally polished black

Answer:	For me these're really easy get on and off. The shaft is not too tall and just a perfect width. You can always use the top strap to assist with pulling them on. I own two pairs of FRYE Engineer boots and just love them-super comfy boots!

Answer:	No, I don’t think it would cover if you attempt black polish over the silver. You’re best bet is to buy the black leather. I bought both and I am thrilled. Good luck!
