I ended up returning the pad to Amazon, since the cost of the replacement gamepad, paying to send in the Wii U to determine if the issue was with the console, and then paying to have it fixed (if that was the issue) would be about equal in cost to just buying a new Wii U. So i bought a new Wii U. Definitely was far from an ideal experience.
