I'm also 34 waist and the XL is too big, the chaps fall off so I will need to add an additional hole to tighten it more (when I get a chance). My thighs are smaller (about 23") and they are the reason why I bought an XL. At first I had ordered an L and it felt a little tight... so I exchanged it for the XL. I now think I should have stayed with the "L". So for you, I think because of your thighs you will need the XL. And what you can do if they fall off is add another hole to the belt part, which is what I'm going to do with mine.
