10 best leather conditioners
Leather conditioners are products used to maintain and preserve leather items, such as shoes, bags, belts, jackets, and furniture. These conditioners play a vital role in keeping leather soft, supple, and looking its best over time. Here's what you need to know about leather conditioners:
Purpose: Leather conditioners are designed to moisturize and nourish leather, preventing it from drying out, cracking, and becoming stiff. They restore the natural oils in leather that can be lost due to exposure to sunlight, heat, and moisture.
Types of Leather Conditioners: There are different types of leather conditioners available, including creams, lotions, oils, and sprays. Each type has its specific application method and is suitable for different leather items.
Ingredients: Leather conditioners typically contain natural oils, waxes, and emollients that penetrate the leather to provide moisture and flexibility. Common ingredients include beeswax, lanolin, mink oil, neatsfoot oil, and jojoba oil.
Application: To use a leather conditioner, clean the leather item first to remove dirt and grime. Then, apply the conditioner evenly using a soft cloth or sponge. Allow it to be absorbed into the leather, and wipe off any excess. Follow the product's instructions for best results.
Frequency: How often you should condition leather items depends on their use and exposure. For frequently used items like shoes and bags, conditioning every few months is often recommended. Items exposed to harsh conditions or outdoor elements may need more frequent conditioning.
Protection: In addition to conditioning, leather protectants or waterproofing sprays can be applied to create a barrier against moisture and stains. These products can be especially useful for leather items used in wet or rugged environments.
Color Restoration: Some leather conditioners are designed to restore color and shine to faded or worn leather. These products may contain dyes or pigments that help rejuvenate the appearance of the leather.
Compatibility: It's essential to choose a leather conditioner that is compatible with the type of leather you are treating. Different leather types, such as full-grain, top-grain, and suede, may require different products.
Storage: Store leather items in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use. Proper storage helps prevent leather from deteriorating and reduces the need for frequent conditioning.
Maintenance Routine: Regularly cleaning, conditioning, and protecting leather items as part of a maintenance routine can significantly extend their lifespan and keep them looking their best.
Leather conditioners are valuable tools for anyone who owns leather goods.By using these products correctly and consistently, you can extend the life of your leather items and keep them looking and feeling like new.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use it on tan leather? will it darken the leather? thanks |
Answer: | I used it on my Volvo's tan leather seats and didn't notice any darkening. |
Question: | Can these pads be machine washed AND dryed |
Answer: | Hello Fernando,Thanks for messaging! These pads can indeed be machine washed and dried. They will probably last a bit longer if washed by hand, however. I like to clean mine under the sink with a bit of mild soap. Shouldn't take very long - just enough to spot them up. Let me know if you have any other questions! Cheers! |
Question: | Does this work on designer leather handbags |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Description for this product says to not use on genuine leather. Is that a typo |
Answer: | Hey Paul,Not a typo. "Genuine leather" is a little bit of a misnomer, as it is a subtype of many different kinds of leather that are genuine animal hide. "Genuine leather" is what happens when the upper layers of leather - the top grain and the full grain - have been sanded down to create a softer, more delicate hide. In fact, this type of leather is used to make suede and nubuck. Unfortunately, "genuine leather's" delicate and porous qualities mean it will need different kinds of treatment than regular leather (suede care products are best), and as such, we don't recommend Healing Balm for genuine leather. Often times leather will be described as "genuine leather" without really explaining what that means, so we've found it helpful to our customers to let them know ahead of time.Hope this answers your question! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone used this on nuluxe material?? Not a real leather but used in some Lexus vehicles |
Answer: | Lexol should treat nuluxe just fine. It can treat vinyl with no problem, so I personally do not think there will be a problem with nuluxe. One thing I do know, is that the Lexol will make your nuluxe smell like it's expensive leather. If not, you've only wasted $10-12.00. No big deal. But personally, I think you'll be happy. |
Question: | Does it help with cracks |
Answer: | Not sure what you mean by "help." I've not used this product on cracked leather, but I have used a leather conditioner on boots that show some cracks. The cracks won't go away, but they won't get worse because the conditioner moisturizes the leather. |
Question: | Has anyone tried it on beige leather for cars |
Answer: | Yes I use it on my cars with beige leather. I can say it works great, it’s the only brand I buy. |
Question: | Can I use it on black calfskin leather bag |
Answer: | Thank you for contacting Energizer. It is always advisable to do a spot test before using it on the bag. For any further assistance please contact us at [email protected]. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it supposed to be very runny like water? Opened the container and a bunch spilled on the floor |
Answer: | Mine never did, but the first jar I received seemed 'old' and smelled 'off' so I returned that one and exchanged for another. The second one was fine and worked exceptionally well, but I suppose if you live in a very warm climate, it could liquify. Mine was a soft paste and worked well. Looked just like the picture on the website. Also, it could be the result of how and how long it was stored by Amazon's fulfillment center and how it was transported to your residence if you live in a very warm climate (as we did when we were in Phoenix, AZ - always had to be careful of when we ordered certain items.) |
Question: | Can I use this on my leather teddy |
Answer: | Real leather loves our Beeswax! Whether a favorite bear or garment, your teddy will be softer and smoother with just one application. |
Question: | Bought a very exspensive pair of dark exoctic python leather boots for my son and want to protect & condition would you recom this or another product |
Answer: | I love this stuff. I have used it on my leather couch and on a vintage Chanel purse. It works better than anything else I previously tried. I would definitely try it on leather boots. |
Question: | What are the ingredients |
Answer: | Animal oils and beeswax |
- Leather conditioner cream with real beeswax and plant oils designed to melt when spread on by hand
- Condition, restore dried and sun faded leather furniture and leather auto interiors
- Heavy Duty Leather Preservative is Made in the USA
User questions & answers
Question: | how's this stuff for fine dress shoes |
Answer: | Black or very dark brown dress shoes that you choose to wear in the rain. Otherwise find a good leather conditioner that is known to not darken leather. There are more than one on the market that are not supposed to. I have some very light leather and Bick 4 has not darkened them. Let's also has a product that is not supposed to darken too. Always test an in conspicuous area, especially if you own a fine dress shoe. Many years ago I learned the hard way |
Question: | Has anyone used this on leather auto seats? I used it on my boots and loved it, but I do not want to change the color of my MIata seats |
Answer: | Many happy customers have used both the Heavy Duty LP & the Leather Oil successfully on their auto leather. To read a review from a customer who restores the upholstery in classic cars, visit the product page for Heavy Duty LP at our own website, Obenaufs. |
Question: | Would I benefit from using this or the leather conditioner on a NEW motorcycle vest? I don't plan on riding in the rain |
Answer: | I believe leather conditioner keeps the leather soft and supple. The Obenauf's is a leather preservative and it's purpose is to protect the leather from various environmental elements that can damage the leather. It will work great for your leather vest because when you wear it when you ride, it is exposed to the air, the road grime, the pollution, the sun etc. |
Question: | wolverine |
Answer: | A wolverine was a teenager from Colorado who fought against Soviet paratroopers who invaded the United States during WW3 in the 1980’s. A member of the resistance fighters the Wolverines. Patrick Swayze was their leader. |

The Only Natural Industrial Strength Leather Protection
Heavy Duty LP provides a natural barrier against destructive substances and reinforces leather fibers against scuffing. Due to the Beeswax/Propolis Suspension Formula, a little goes a long way. It waterproofs naturally, while still allowing the leather to breathe. With regular application, people are getting years of wear out of their leather boots!
Leather Care, Conditioning, and Reproofing
Not just for boots, Obenauf’s leather preservative (lp), is widely used to condition leather saddle bags, chaps, tack, holsters, sheathes, baseball gloves, as well as motorcycle and auto leather. More than a leather conditioner, use Heavy Duty LP as a wax waterproofing. Apply with a low heat blow dryer to reproof your cotton oilskin dusters and hats. The natural ingredients of LP can also be applied to protect unfinished, natural wood furniture.
Originally Developed for Firefighters 30 Years Ago
An Idaho Wildland Firefighter developed this unique Beeswax/Propolis Suspension Formula to protect leather against caustic fire retardant chemicals, ash, heat, water, and abrasion. Natural oils are gradually released into the fibers as a long-term lubrication. Heat or continued flexing causes oils to be released faster. Leather gets oiled when and where it needs it most; while on the job!
Recommended Application
At room temperature, apply by hand as body temperature helps melt LP into leather. Two applications last longer in wet conditions. For absorption, allow ten minutes or up to one hour between treatments. On smooth leather, buff off excess with a clean cloth. On nubuck, use a soft bristled brush. One ounce should provide one application to a pair of tall boots. Apply every 6 to 8 weeks or as needed.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are there any negative implications with using this on vented seats that have perforations for air flow |
Answer: | I am not sure about that. I would think not. However, you can contact the manufacturer directly and they will provide a definitive answer. |
Question: | how do i clean perferated leather seats |
Answer: | This is more conditioner than cleaner. So do not expect super cleaning power. It will remove some dirt though. Either spray on the seat from around one foot and wipe with a rag or spay on a rag and wipe the seat. I would not use microfiber cause it absorbs the stuff quicker than leather. If after one application you see that leather absorbed everything you can repeat the process onece again. If the material does not absorb then it is vynil and not leather. |
Question: | Is this one better at conditioning than the cleaning and conditioning combo- G |
Answer: | It’s better |
Question: | Has anyone tried using this on leather shoes or boots |
Answer: | Sorry, I've only used it on my motorcycle seat. On that it has worked great. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this have any kind of odor |
Answer: | Not particularly; real mink oil has a strong odor, but this isn't real mink oil - it's mostly TALLOW instead. |
Question: | My car's leather seats are constantly exposed to dry and hot conditions. Would mink oil be appropriate to use on them |
Answer: | If they aren't suede, then mink oil would be fine to use on them. That precludes this product, though, since it isn't real mink oil - it's tallow. |
Question: | what is the Genus, species and country of origin of the mink |
Answer: | The species is bovine (as in Bessy the Hereford); this product is TALLOW with only a small portion of mink oil added to justify the word "mink" on the label. |
Question: | Is this squozen from fresh live minks |
Answer: | No. Live minks don't work well in treating your dead cow products. I recommend enjoying fried mink nuggets with your steak. |
