Answer:	It’s a hollow space on the top. Although there is no shelf space on the top, this is a very well made item. I enjoy it very much and it does carry lots of earrings. Good luck!

Answer:	That depends upon their width. There are 6 rows with 16 slots on each row so that would be 8 pairs per row totaling 48 pairs. Some customers have no problem putting 2 earrings in one slot to increase the capacity while other customers have really wide flange back earrings that need a slot space between earrings. No 2 earring collections are the same, but I hope this helps answer your question.
