| Answer: | John, Not sure how small a pouch you have in mind. It is not as light a fabric as a light windbreaker, but could most likely be rolled or stuffed into 12 inch sack. | Answer: | It depends. If you are going to be sitting in the woods for 10 days, in reasonable temperatures, it will keep you dry. If you will be hiking, carrying any weight in any weather, it will probably not keep you dry. As far as the fabric, it is extremely lightweight, and has kept me dry in heavy rain, but if I was moving around, going up switchbacks with 50 lbs....nothing is going to keep you dry. I thru-hiked the AT back in 1989, and carried a very expensive gore tex Marmot 'all weahter' jacket. It did not keep me dry, in fact, the gore tex didn't really hold up to pack straps, and normal wear very well. Do not get me wrong, gore tex is wonderful stuff, in the right application, but one of them is not a jacket. Had this fabric been available, I would have been drier, but be realistic, dry from rain, isn't really dry. There were times in those 168 days, that if it was warm, I actually preferred to be wet from rain, over wet from sweat (and after many days in the woods, it actually helped on the comfort scale).The REASON I have the opinion on this jacket (and BTW, the full side zip pants are absolutely the best too) is THE ONE to buy, is because:1) The fabric is essentially waterproof2) It's durable3) It's lightweight (read that as cooler than most heavier stuff)4) Pit zips are a wonderful invention.Hope this helps. |
