Try adding real food supplements to his/her diet salmon/salmon oil is good but I understand it's pricey and needs to be refrigerated if you don't to use salmon oil or even if you do. I love to incorporate coconut oil into my dogs diet. The health benefits are fantastic including improved cognitive function, helping the absorption of nutrients, it's antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal. all this on top of the fact that it's great for the skin and coat. it can be used topically to help heal dry itchy skin or add a bit (up to 1 tbsp per 30 lbs once a day, you don't have to use it that often some is better than none) to their food. Most dogs love the taste, mine lick it right off the spoon ;), Note: all the properties I just talked about apply to unrefined coconut oil, refined will still work for the coat but not as well and doesn't have the health benefits I just mentioned. Also go for foods high in omega 3s.Finally I'll end with a break down of the ingredients list Brewers Rice, a by-product of the brewering industry commonly known as broken or chipped rice usually from the floor sweepings, Chicken Meal, depending on quality ranges from poor to excellent. I can make an educated guess that this is low quality which is commonly the product of culled (not going to give you a description as to what that means because it's graphic but you can look it up) spent laying hens and male chicks, Whole Grain Sorghum, a cheap non nutritious grain used as a filler, Cracked Pearled Barley, a cheap form of barley common in livestock feed, Pea Protein, don't be fooled into thinking this is healthy. It is a cheap alternative to far superior animal protein and is extremely high in starch, Pork Fat, one of the cheaper animal fat sources overall I would call it okay but by no means ideal. Most likely used for flavor enhancement, Soybean Oil, soy is a harmful ingredient that is sadly common in many dog foods becuase it is cheap. This is most likly added for skin and coat but their are far better oils to use, Chicken Liver Flavor, I frown upon any added flavoring. This is simply here to get your dog to eat the food. It doesn't say where the flavor comes from, Dried Beet Pulp, added for cheap fiber. I don't care for it but it's unlikely to cause any harm, Lactic Acid, Potassium Chloride, Iodized Salt, Flaxseed, can be used to improve the skin and coat as they do contain omega 3s but very low on the list so it's unlikely to get the benefit, L-Lysine, a synthic form of an essential amino acid added because there wasn't enough meat or quality meat. Choline Chloride, vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of Vitamin C), Niacin Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Biotin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite, not as good as natural selenium yeast beware of recall for concentrations too high on this ingredient,), Taurine, see comments for L-lysine, Oat Fiber, added of course for fiber, nothing really wrong with the ingredient. Although in this food it is most likely low quality, Mixed Tocopherols for freshness, Natural Flavors, see chicken liver flavor comment, Beta-Carotene, Apples, Broccoli, Carrots, Cranberries, Green Peas. Last five ingredients added for advertising purposes this way they can legally claim their food contains fruits and veggies but as the last five ingredients you can bet they are next to non existent in this food.Bottom line there's a possibility that you could see a little improvement in the coat but it really is not a healthy food, low quality and not enough animal protein. I would opt for the foods I listed above instead.I hope this was helpful to anyone reading.
