12 best automatic watches
Automatic watches, also known as self-winding watches, are a type of wristwatch that operates without a battery and instead relies on the movement of the wearer's wrist to power the watch. They are a subset of mechanical watches and are popular among watch enthusiasts for their craftsmanship, heritage, and engineering.
Here are key features and aspects of automatic watches:
Mechanical Movement: Automatic watches use a mechanical movement, comprising gears, springs, and a balance wheel, to keep time. This movement is powered by the movement of the wearer's wrist.
Rotor: An automatic watch has a small semi-circular weight called a rotor, which moves with the motion of the wrist. As the wearer moves, the rotor spins and winds the mainspring, storing energy to power the watch.
Mainspring: The mainspring is a coiled wire of special metal that stores the energy from the rotor's movement. As the mainspring unwinds, it powers the gears and hands of the watch.
Power Reserve: The power reserve of an automatic watch is the duration it can operate without being worn.Common power reserves range from 24 to 48 hours, though some high-end automatic watches can have longer reserves.
Manual Winding: While automatic watches are primarily self-winding through wrist movement, they can also be manually wound using the crown. This is especially useful if the watch hasn't been worn for a while and needs to be started.
Accuracy: Automatic watches can be highly accurate, especially in high-quality movements. However, they may require occasional adjustment to maintain accuracy.
Maintenance: Automatic watches require regular maintenance to ensure they function correctly over time. This includes cleaning, oiling, and potential repairs by a skilled watchmaker.
Craftsmanship: Automatic watches are often highly valued for their craftsmanship, intricate designs, and attention to detail. Many watch enthusiasts appreciate the artistry involved in creating a precise and reliable mechanical movement.
Perpetual Motion: If worn regularly, an automatic watch will remain in motion and keep accurate time indefinitely without needing a battery replacement, unlike quartz watches.
Automatic watches are a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, appealing to individuals who appreciate both the elegance of mechanical watches and the convenience of self-winding mechanisms.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this made in Japan |
Answer: | The movement is a "Made in Japan" movement. Most Orient watches are not fully made in Japan (they own factories across Asia and the Pacific islands). Retailers inside Japan do offer a "Made in Japan" version, but most of the suppliers on Amazon are "Japan Movement" watches. There is zero difference in the actual quality of watch. ("Made in Japan" labeling just means the shift supervisors were Japanese; the factory itself does not need to be in Japan according to the country's labeling laws.) |
Question: | Does one need to be careful setting the day & date? I’ve heard that if done improperly, it can damage an automatic watch |
Answer: | Hello. You must not change and adjust the date between 22:00 and 1:00. Between this time the machine is working to change day and date and if you change you can damage your watch. |
Question: | How good are the lumes on this watch |
Answer: | Very good lume. I am very happy with the watch. |
Question: | How tgis mako iii comoares to mako ii? Are they no different |
Answer: | Very Different. The markers are different. The movement is improved. The crystal is sapphire. The Kamasu is a definite upgrade from the MAKO II |

With a bold design, this Invicta chronograph has a poised and calm ambience that’s sure to have you looking twice.
Classic styling and high performance add up to an outstanding sport watch for your land or sea adventures. This automatic watch, from Invicta's Pro Diver series, places a large round stainless steel case on a robust triple link steel bracelet. The black dial is designed for quick and easy read-off, even in low light conditions. It offers three-hand function with Tritnite-coated luminous hands and hour markers and a magnified date display at the three o'clock mark. The dial is capped with a resilient mineral crystal and framed by a black unidirectional rotating steel bezel with coin edge detailing. This watch is driven by Japanese automatic movement, which is visible through the see-through skeleton case back. It is rated water resistant to a full 660 feet (200 meters).
Automatic Watches
Automatic watches do not operate on batteries. Automatic watches are made up of about 130 or more parts that work together to tell time. Automatic movements mark the passage of time by a series of gear mechanisms, and are wound by the movement of your wrist as you wear it. The gear train then transmits the power to the escapement, which distributes the impulses, turning the balance wheel. The balance wheel is the time regulating organ of a mechanical watch, which vibrates on a spiral hairspring. Lengthening or shortening the balance spring makes the balance wheel go faster or slower to advance or retard the watch. The travel of the balance wheel from one extreme to the other and back again is called oscillation. When this type of watch is removed from your wrist, the movement winds down in 10 to 72 hours, depending on the size of its winding reserve Lastly, automatic movements come in different types, including movements that are Swiss-made, Japanese-made, and more.
Also referred to as self-winding, watches with automatic movements utilize kinetic energy, the swinging of your arm, to provide energy to an oscillating rotor to keep the watch ticking. They're considered more satisfying to watch collectors (horologists) because of the engineering artistry that goes into the hundreds of parts that make up the movement. If you do not wear an automatic watch consistently (for about 8 to 12 hours a day), you can keep the watch powered with a watch winder (a great gift for collectors).
Screw Down Crowns: Many Invicta watches are equipped with a screw down crown to help prevent water infiltration. This is most common on our Diver models. In order to adjust the date and/or time on such a watch, you must first unscrew the crown before you can gently pull it out to its first or second click stop position. To do this, simply rotate the crown counterclockwise until it springs open. When you have finished setting the watch, the crown must then be pushed in and screwed back in tightly. Not doing so will cancel the water resistance of the watch and will void all warranties from the manufacturer. Overall, this process should not require a lot of effort or force.
Pro Diver Collection

Stylishly classic, internal workings are forged with variations of either Swiss chronograph or 21-jewel automatic movements and willingly navigate in depths up to 300 meters. User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a self help on removing two or three links? I have the tools |
Answer: | Search "Invicta Link Removal" on You Tube. There are many videos, some are better than others. Pay attention to the direction of the arrows on the bracelet links. |
Question: | What is the difference between invicta 8926ob pro diver and invicta 17044 pro diver, the second is cheaper, what are other differences |
Answer: | They are pretty much the same watch and both have an Automatic Seiko movement (NH35A). The only difference I have found is the 8926OB face is more similar to the Rolex Submariner, with tabs instead of dots at the 3, 6 and 9 positions. Also, the loupe over the date window is slightly more powerful on the 8926OB, making it easier to read the date. I have both watches and prefer the 8926OB! |
Question: | Can enough links be removed to accommodate a 6.5" (approx.) wrist |
Answer: | Yes. I have a 6.25" wrist, and had to remove all but one link. So for a 6.5" wrist, removing all but 2 should be fine. The respondent above who said the links are graduated in size is mistaken. All the _removable_ links are the same size. |
Question: | What is the difference between 8926OB and 17044 ? Which is the better one |
Answer: | The 8926OB has straight indicese at 6 and 9 while the 17044 has round ones. The band width on the 8926 is 20mm while 18mm on the 17044. The case thickness on the 8926 is 11mm while 14mm on the 17044.17044 is a newer model (jan 2014) and the 8926OB is 2006 (with a new version in 2011). Also, the 17044 lists a "stopwatch" as a special feature. |

This is an automatic mechanical watch. Automatic watches do not operate on batteries; instead, they are powered automatically by the movement of the wearer’s arm. If the main spring in your automatic watch is not wound sufficiently, timekeeping may become less accurate. In order to maintain accuracy, wear the watch for 8 hours or more per day, or manually wind the main spring by turning the crown. When not in use, automatic watches may be kept charged with an automatic watch winder – a watch storage unit which may be purchased separately.

About Invicta
Latin for "invincible," Invicta was founded in La Chaux-de-fonds, Switzerland in 1837 by Raphael Picard, who believed that fine Swiss timepieces could be offered at modest prices. For more than a century, the company has created distinctive manual and automatic-winding pieces. In 1991, descendants of the Picard family reaffirmed the company's founding principle, and the invigorated Invicta has been growing ever since with one of the most widely diverse collections of precise Swiss timepieces on the market.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a new watch in the box |
Answer: | box papers etc... |
Question: | is the band solid? have the tmi nh35 mov |
Answer: | The Grand Diver has the NH35 movement. Waterproof to 300M. Mine runs at -5sec./day. I'm very pleased with this watch. |
Question: | Has anyone swapped the band out for something else like a Nato Strap? How easy was it to remove the band to replace it |
Answer: | Changing bands is fairly straight forward. I purchased the spring pin changing tool that makes the job a breeze. After removing the OEM steel band, I re-inserted the spring pins. Now changing ZULU or NATO bands takes about 10 secs. As easy as re-lacing your shoes. |
Question: | Gotta love amazon descriptions. description says swiss, yet on features says japanese and then country or origin china. what is it |
Answer: | This watch like most low cost watches today are made in China. The Swiss brand Invicta, dates back from 1837 and was bought a few years back, by a US watch maker in Florida. Some Invictas are made in Swiss and it will say at the bottom face of the watch. This watch in my opinion is built and assembled in China but that does not change a thing about the quality of this watch, which I happened to own. However, the engine is a Japanese Seiko new model nh35 24 jewels engine which makes that watch, a very desirable model. The big downside its the weight about 208grms. The heavy SS band is not screwed together but pinned. I would advise like I did, to replace asap the SS band with a robust quality rubber strap or NATO, because the SS band may break after a while. The watch is now only 138grms. For that kind of money, how can you go wrong... |
