Answer:	There’s a little white piece of paper on top of the battery when you screw the top off. When you remove it and screw the top back on so that the spring touches the battery, the light will come on. To turn it off, unscrew it a little until it turns off. Answer:	Yes, both outside covers a blank, but they are still an attractive brass finish. Further more the inside of the lid is recessed and blank, and could hold a picture if you want it as a gift.
Question:	Where do i put the engraved information for the order
Answer:	This compass is a functional magnetic compass. It can be used for hiking but it is larger in size and does not have an adjustable bezel. For normal hiking use I would suggest the Stanley London Solid Brass Wilderness Scouting Compass ASIN: B008DKB2H4 or the custom engraved version ASIN: B01BIEKWIG.
